Sonic 3 Prototype - Unused Bosses

- There are five unused bosses in the Sonic 3 November 3rd prototype that cannot be found in normal gameplay.
1. Knuckles' MGZ2 boss.
2. FBZ2 Laser Boss
3. LBZ2 Laser Boss
4. SOZ Miniboss
5. MVZ Miniboss

good video, but here’s a tip: use white text with a black outline for future videos, the text would be much more readable.
Superman Mario Thanks, I've planned on migrating to a different video editor for this reason.
He can also make the black background slightly transparent if he wants to show more of the screen and it will still be readable.
It's especially useful for videos.
Dark yellow works too
I think the person likes to go with the new styles. I plan to go with the new styles on my video walkthroughs. I wonder if my Video Editor app on my phone can do text with an outline. I might check my Windows Movie Maker app on my computer to see if I can make an outline for my text.
@@ikagura Do you mean dark yellow text or dark yellow outline?
its so weird to see sonic 2 sprites in a sonic 3 level
Same hhhhh
I don't really like the S3 sprites
The weirdest thing here that the color palette in this prototype is the same as the final Sonic 3, but the sprites are still left from Sonic 2.
@@toaddx it actually isn't. Tails still has red parts in his fur. The only things that's the same from Sonic 3 are the shades of gray.
@@shade221 nah it doesn't sonic 3 sprites are great
I like how a prototype exists and people already find interesting stuff like unused bosses.
Even some knuckles bosses are present too like Angel Island Act 1, Hydrocity Act 2 and Marble Garden Act 1
I have seen that pfp in a game and in like 5 other accounts
Because of The Cutting Room Floor, TCRF Gives to everyone unused content to add in-game.
But some bosses are from S3 & K
Correction: Variants, these enemies already appear but the difference is some collisions or... area of appearance?
If I'm not mistaken, I think the golem jumps higher and gets knocked back further too.
Good work on documenting this prototype.
I knew there was something different about the movement. That seems to be the difference.
2:34 Eggman learned to levitate 😶
He learned how to walk through walls as well.
Silver must be behind this mess!
@@SilverSonic1992, yes lol, it's even weirder than levitation😅
nah he used noclip
nah, he just went into spectator mode
I also noticed that the LBZ2 laser boss doesn't have a spike ball orbit the head of the boss, so nothing's stopping you from simply spindashing on top of it.
Yeah, I forgot to point that out. The spike graphics are loaded into VRAM, though.
Interesting. I saw that this prototype also contains some of Knuckles's boss patterns, much like in the final Sonic 3. Does the boss do anything with that?
Indeed it does. The behavior seems to be identical to the final, meaning the bomb scene will play out and the game will soft-lock.
Im Glad you are back (I haven’t been here for a while), plus yeah this prototype is really strange, you probably know there is actually music there before MJ was composing the music, like Carnival Night for example. Also these bosses area bit strange too since they act a bit different than the final release.

"yes i do, cya!"
Pretty cool. Has anyone showcased the bosses from Sonic 2 August proto? TCRF mentions them but has no images or video.
I mean there's 3 unused Bosses in there
-chemical plant (unchanged from Nick Arcade and Wai i think)
- Aquatic Ruin (which is fairly finished)
-Broken Metropolis Zone Boss
@@callmeninaiced I saw all of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 lost levels. Did I see a fake one? I saw one unused boss that matches the Emerald Hill Zone boss, except that it's harder, because there are bones that can hurt you if you land on them. It was in Dust Hill Zone. I hated Dust Hill Zone, and I'm glad that it was removed from the final version.
@Caleb Hopkins
That's from a rom hack. Dust Hill Zone in actual prototypes is nothing more then a different name for Mystic Cave.
@@marx4538 I like to see the real Dust Hill Zone. I wish people would stop making all these fake things up, and then putting in a name that makes it look real.
@@bennel3588 Wouldn't have been an issue for you if you knew how to verfiy using trusted sources such as The Cutting Room Floor or Sonic Retro.
it's interesting to see how so many of these bosses are in a somewhat functional state, expect HE-HO he's built like a jack-o'-lantern doughnut with green sprinkles.
After watching most of ur videos I can say you are a legend good job m8👍👍.
Someone should finish and include these bosses in a rom hack of Sonic 3; possibly even as alternative bosses in Sonic 3 Complete. You could either have the final bosses, or the prototype bosses.
This is probably a idiot question but here i go:
It is possible to load a Sonic 1 savestate in the Sonic 2 (Nickarcade prototype) since it uses a lot of sonic 1 files?
You can load a savestate into any game, errors start when the game tries to call things that aren't the correct value or don't exist, thus causing corruption. The best examples are N64 games, though.
Hm, im sure tetrabit would be facinated by this.
So all in all its the knuckles route/sonic & knuckles bosses. Maybe this proto was just after they separated sonic 3 and sonic & knuckles hence why theres left over content but some parts have already been scraped
This is a tricky question. All evidence we have points to there never being a split, per se. Instead, SEGA appears to have worked on one large S3C prototype and used optional build flags to assemble a smaller 16mbit ROM. This prototype is the 16mbit ROM, although there are leftovers (such as LRZ Act 1) from the 24mbit that was apparently compiled at the same time, and since S3 doesn't fill an entire 16mbit ROM, the a little extra data from S3C seeped in the empty space.
That hey ho almost looks like a prop for a cutscene, hmmm....
I was thinking the same thing! It could be something like Tunnelbot in Marble Garden Zone.
@@SilverSonic1992 I could definitely see them strewn about in the foreground out of reach cutting down trees until one directly blocks your path, causing a face off
Do you think the last boss displayed may have had part of its code removed at this point of development?
The robot from mushroom hill is in sonic and knuckles
@@joaquinfernandez1752 Yes, and as we know, this prototype was around the time when Sonic and Knuckles began to be developed, taking stuff that was supposed to be in Sonic 3, and erasing it in it. But some of the stuff that was to be taken can still be found here, like that boss. It's got barely any function though, so perhaps part of his code was erased, but just enough was left to make it spawn in the game. That's what I'm asking
that is honestly possible as Sonic 3 for some reason is hardcapped to 2MB of size
@@RaposaCadela oh I get it now, they probably just moved it to S&K and the only thing left was the code without the palette
At this point the boss was probably unfinished.
Seeing this, flying battery in Sonic 3 alone, mushroom hill boss remnants in Launch Base etc, makes me think of all those reviews of Sonic and Knuckles criticising it for being too derivative of Sonic 3. *Gee* *it's* *almost* *as* *if* *they* *are* *two* *halves* *of* *the* *same* *game* That of course being common knowledge for anyone with the ability to read wikipedia by the time these reviews rolled around online.
I read that they were planned to be one game, but it all could not fit into one cartridge, so Sonic & Knuckles was made with the plug-in port. If Sonic the Hedgehog 1 was put in the plug-in port, the game becomes Blue Sphere. If Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was put in the plug-in port, the game becomes Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. If Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was put in the plug-in port, it becomes Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and that's the complete version of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I think the full version could fit into one Sega Dreamcast disc.
From what i've seen, most of those reviews were made before the internet was used by a lot of people, and then just published online.
Plus, to play the full S3&K, you still had to pay twice.
@@bennel3588 Definitely would fit on a Dreamcast disc, lol. Sonic Jam for the Saturn has all four games, the three lock-on modes, and an easy mode version of each game with altered maps.
I was dumb for believing that the full version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles could not fit into one single Sega Genesis cartridge, but it actually can, and Sega even mentioned it, and they never planned to make all of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles into one game, because if they did, they would have already done that, and they always were planned to be released as two separate games. Some people gave good enough proof that they were always planned to be two separate games, and I think someone noticed that it would make the sale go high up.
I found this link. It does seem like an interview with Sega about how Sonic 3 became two separate games. Is it phony or real? www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2016/10/10/how-sonic-the-hedgehog-3-became-two-games-sonic-and-knuckles-lock-on-technology.aspx
Are you still working with mushroom valley?
Xebninmaj Sark Yes.
I thought the whole zone(expect for music) was entirely wiped out,how can you restore it
Yeah, it is. The only thing that remains is an object layout and a color palette, both of which are different from the final version.
Donkey Cheese Mushroom Valley holds a color pallete that has slightly brighter colors towards the blue side of the spectrum rather than dark green. The actual map EXISTS, just improperly loaded into glitched tiles from Angel Island Act 1. Same thing with Sandopolis, except there is no confirmed collision nor pallete
Yeah I did some research myself and wow, its be really impressive if the zone were to be somewhat put back in the game
Bruh theres one more thing to the laser boss
He doesnt fly faster until hes offscreen after a hit
That's true.
How do you spawn the bosses and objects?
Debug Cheat i guess
if i do remember the code (on sound-test) is 01-09-09-01-01-02-04
1:31 That boss mabye used in Sonic Mania
Nope its used in sonic 2
Interesting, bosses from S&K and Sonic 3 & Knuckles
The big question, works with the lockon this game, the protos from sonic 2 working with the lockon system
This prototype does not work with S&K because S&K was designed for the final version only.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 can save files, but Sonic & Knuckles cannot save files, but if Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is on top of Sonic & Knuckles, the save files can go through Sonic & Knuckles. How is that possible? Is the save battery from STH3 going through S&K or does S&K have a save battery that activates when STH3 is plugged into the top?
The laser one you should have gone super to hit it. Just a thought
I assume just like in the final you can't destroy it, it takes damage but nothing else happens.
@@jeremyabbott4537 Yeah. There is a similar boss in Sonic 2 where you do have to actually hit it to destroy it.
The S Monitor can only be placed in Hydrocity in this prototype.
first boss is used for knuckles
second is used for flying battery
third is used for knuckles
4th is used for sandopolis
last one is frst boss of s &k
Kind of surprised there is very little real "cut content" in Sonic 3. Nothing on par with the Hidden Palace or other unused zones from Sonic 2. Seems they really got to do everything they wanted to do with it by the time they put out S&K. The only thing interesting that didn't really make it was the drop dash.
There would probably be a lot more unused content and deleted bits if they didn't make use of the extra time they had to essentially add it all to Sonic & Knuckles.
Something to note is that this prototype is very late in development, less than a month before the final build. As such, any "cut-content" would have already been cut. The Sonic 2 pre-beta that was also recently discovered is around the same time frame and almost all of the cut content is already gone.
"The only thing interesting that didn't really make it was the drop dash." You see, this here gets me because I don't think the majority of people realize the development of Sonic 3. It's quite understandable really, as we really don't know much of anything compared to, say, Sonic 2. One of the things that isn't talked about is Sonic 3*D*. Originally, Sonic 3 was developed using the special 3D SVP chip and was going to be the first 3D Sonic game. They spent 6 months on this build, and it was cancelled because the SVP chip wasn't going to be ready for production in time. There's no telling what this build would have contained.
Another interesting thing is the concept art for Sonic 3. Most notably, a picture that depicts Super Sonic fighting a dragon in space. This dragon was mentioned in the S3 JP manual and later materialized itself as Perfect Chaos in Sonic Adventure. The point is, we know almost nothing about Sonic 3's development because it was kept a tight secret.
Is there a link for a hack for these bosses
Not currently, sorry. I'll make something eventually.
@@SilverSonic1992 Yeah it'd be great to have a hack with the bosses, and the restored Lava Reef act 1 & 2 :3
It's the prototype go get it on sonic retro
I like the cut animation of Hey Ho's axe stuck in the tree.
If i know correct if you hit a boss 256 times (except golem) it will die but it makes a badnik sound disappear and gives you 100 score
So, while I was playing this prototype, I found the Hang Mobile Boss in Flying Battery Zone (the one that's grabbing the platform you standing on and trying to defeat you)
Now I understood that he is NOT a hidden boss
He's not unused in this prototype.
Yea... Just at first I thought he wasn't in it
How do I put the bosses on sonic 3 prototype??
Wait...
I played this marble garden boss in a version of sonic 3 in a games page long time ago (a time when the prototype was not yet leaked)
one thing to note, is that it wasn’t with knuckles, it was with sonic
I remember perfectly that I was trapped in that boss the last time that I played the game in this page
0:28 is a nuckles boss in Sonic 3 and nuckles
Possibly a dumb question about the sandopolis boss in this prototype. The screen appears to completely lock in this prototype, but it does not appear to completely lock in S&K (you can still scroll left and right). Could this be an indication that the area to fight the boss was smaller in previous builds, or is this a default programming/data-thing/feature in the beta?
This is not a dumb question at all! I would have to look into this more.
How did you spawn bosses???
Ngl but the jetpack with launch base graphics looks cool, the graphics replacement should have been in the final
00:43 knuckles type boss

how do you load the game when i press download sonic 3 proto its just 1 file and that file is telling me where do you want to open this file what should i do?
You need to get a Genesis emulator to play the game.
Silver Sonic 1992 could you please send a link for genesis emulator?
I wish i could fight them in this prototype :D
There is a faint sound effect for the Laser miniboss.
Prototype ohh well in S3&K those aren’t unused bosses
I remember that in S&K and 3K that you can force a seemingly unused and unfinished death routine on the laser boss by hitting it enough. Does it do the same thing here?
I'm pretty sure that Flying Battery was going to be a level for sonic 3 alone.
Correct.
They could make another Sonic 3 Delta, a rom hack that is based on this prototype
You were right.
So is the rising platform in the FBZ2 Sub-boss absent with the boss or is it connected with the main boss (or is it just not there in general)?
The platform is there and the hang mobile boss can be fought on it, but it doesn't move. That being said, there was clear intention to make it move as they have the section implemented, it just isn't coded. The sequence would have worked a little differently though--instead of the platform rising, the level section would have moved downwards.
So flying battery boss fight was just wing fortress boss fight?
The boss fight from Sonic 2 is very similar, but had an different concept.
I need more of these videos. 🦊
how come both in Sonic 3 and in Sonic and Knuckles the final boss is a three-part boss
Because in the lock-on game, Death Egg Act 2 has an separate level ID data to load the Death Egg boss room.
How did you spawn the bosses
Wish these bosses didn't go unused they look to be quite interesting
They were eventually used and finalized later on.
@@SilverSonic1992 oh that's nice to know I like how these versions of the sonic 3 bosses are in the prototype of this game
There should be unused bosses from sonic & knuckles
There are two of them.
nice work
4:09 oh thats REALLY UNUSED
Someone should take code from this version of the game and move it to the full version, and vice versa, to see what each version allows. E.g. moving all of the deleted levels data from S&K into this build and adding everything in

It’s the music that catches me. Can anyone get any ‘Michael Jackson’ feel out of any of the music in these ‘prototype’ stages? Given that the man and his team were supposed to have been working on the S3 Music, what, from the start?
There probubly a soundtrack before Jackson
@@daniel_w0085 Yeah, the PC version Sonic & Knuckles Collection had alternate music. The recent discovery of the prototypes proves that this was in fact the original soundtrack before Jackson came in.
Guess what?
I did the first one by a mistake. (But it wasn't the Knuckles's boss.)
In the beginning of the act1, i spin on the ground, then something happened i didn't know totally. İt's like this, i'll try to explain:
Suddenly, i go to left and stuck in the ground. Then i push left, and i reach the end of the level. But i was *UNDER* the level. Than that happened. I tried so hard and defeat the boss.
The first one is now an knuckles boss
launch base zone sounds better in this beta.

6:03 just as it's about to do another row the vid ends xd
The second boss it isn't from Sonic & knuckles? The development of Sonic 3 was divided in two, and maybe they was testing this boss and moved to the another cartridge.
Dude, they were meant to be ONE game, that’s why those bosses are in there.
How did they know it was Hey Ho despite the fact he had his graphics removed?
The sprite mappings still exist.
@@SilverSonic1992 You know... I don't think Hey Ho was originally going to be a boss, especially because of his unfinished behaviour in the prototype.
