Good comparison video. If you want to nerd out more on data, download Room Eq Wizard (free), and if you solder up a couple wires and plugs, you can measure the impedence curve of your cabs, and load boxes, and see exactly why the Suhr sounds so good, and the two notes is not-quite-there with some amps.
    www.roomeqwizard.com/help/help_en-GB/html/impedancemeasurement.html
Randall Aiken also has some good resources on his website about load boxes design.

@@mthao1832 I havent seen any plots of the Captor X but I assume its the same as the normal captor (two notes dont say anything about an 'improved' load from what I've seen.)
Never tried the react ir nor seen anyone plot its impedence response. However on their website they show a picture of an LT Spice plot of a full impedence curve, so hopefully it is accurate to a speaker cab like the Suhr.

I bought a Surh Reactive load a couple months back and couldn't love it more. Both The Suhr and Two Notes have their uses though.
The Suhr sounds extremely clear and detailed, very crisp and defined.
The Two Notes doesn't have as much inherent high end and so it sounds a bit smoother.
I'm the same as you though, I wanted to buy a Fractal Load box as well but after several months of it not being in stock I went with the Suhr. Glad I did.

Saw this vid a while back and was intrigued. Been using the Captor for a while and have been very happy with the results. Recently came across a used Suhr RL and pulled the trigger. Low and behold there certainly is a difference. My preference now is for the Suhr for most of my amps and the Captor for the others. Thank you so much for making this video. Cheers!

I think you nailed the description. The Suhr sounded better in the first two sections that sounded aimed for a greenback sound. Once you started getting heavier, to me, the two notes captor beat it. Not by much, and it's hard to put my finger on, but the Suhr was missing something on the heavies. Great video.

I actually thought the Captor sounded a little closer to the Mesa cab probably due the impedance curve they went after being closer to the Mesa V30 thing but I still preferred the Suhr. It has overall more depth and 3D character to the sound. I can definitely hear the greenback 4x12 thing coming through. Maybe a little more scooped.

  • @jeffblack5316
    @jeffblack5316 2 роки тому

The Suhr has a more realistic dynamic response, the way the low end pumps and moves has way more resemblance to a miced cab which makes a big difference to adding that 3D “depth” that people love to talk about. Very cool shit.

Am using the Suhr with a 20 watt Marshall head into some Two-Notes cab sims, and the results have been nothing short of amazing. Never used the Two-Notes load box, so I can't speak to that, but seeing how the Suhr does exactly what I want it to, and sounds phenomenal in the process, I'd say get the Suhr if you're in the market for one.

I bought the same Suhr RL the day it was released and have used it with my Marshall AFD100 and 5150 and it works great! Wouldn’t trade it for any of the others. But, I absolutely agree if Boss released a less expensive version of their TAE it could be a good contender in the $300-400 price range. It and the Ox are too expensive at their current price points. For more flexibility you could look at the new Suhr RL version that has HP Jack, IR loader and hi/lo cut switches on the front. Perfect! Great video and comparisons 👍

with the surh reactive load I can turn it on on stage, connecting it between the speaker of my vox and the head, being able to set the volume of my vox in some region to hear it on stage and not needing to mike it, passing the signal that the suhr reactive load receive and send to the table, dare you, a live stage show situation without needing to mic my vox. I don't know if you have access to a "Laney Ironheart IRT Studio". It's a 3 channel tube amp that has some kind of built-in loadbox that allows you to track silently WITH poweramp tube coloration. I have never used one but I'm very interested since it's a tube power amp (2x EL84) + loadbox + great preamp on a single package with a decent price. Sounds to me like the perfect solution to use between the AMT preamp pedals that I love (on Laney's FX loop) and an impulse response, but now I wonder if the "internal loadbox" kinda sucks in terms of tone.
Thanks for this video, you're one of the few people tackling this subject.

I went down a rabbit hole with load boxes…I have the Suhr,Fractal X-Load,and Fryette PS2……I also tried the Boss TAE,Two Notes Captor, and UA Ox….The Suhr and Fractal are my favorites, and sound very close….The Two Notes and Ox and Boss leave out the low end inductor,so the curve doesn’t look like a real speaker….The Fractal X-Load is smaller than the Suhr by the way….but it sounds nearly identical..

I don't think Mesa knows how to make a "bad" cab....actually everything they make is ridiculous in its own right, except for maybe the OG Cab Clone...But I've heard that sound great in person as well as on a few videos.
Glenn was HATING on it, but John Petrucci used it very successfuly, mixing it dead center along with a hard panned stereo pair of Boogie 1x12 cabs off stage in an isolation booth mic'd up, and those tones were INSANELY HUGE. I trust his judgement a smidge more than Glenn's and both him and Maddi (his badass tech/sound engineer) were totally happy with the built in Cab Clone on the JP-2C heads.

All these devices are passive. A speaker cab doesn't need external power, and neither do these as they serve the same role as far as the tube amp is concerned. DC or Phantom power is only required when there is an integrated analog cabinet simulator (like the Captor) or an impulse response loader (like the Captor X or Suhr IR).
