Hi! We are Helen and Tim. We quit our jobs in Jan 2023 to travel full-time. We are based in Portland, Oregon, and have been together for over 10+ years and share a love for the great outdoors through hiking, camping, skiing, and more! We grew up in Texas (Helen) and Pennsylvania (Tim).
Our goal is to hike the world one mountain at a time. We love to inspire people to get outdoors no matter if the adventure is big or small. Post-hike, we enjoy the local flavors and foods, and a cold drink (beer for Tim and kombucha for Helen).
There is so much in the world to see, even if it is in our own backyards. We started filming our adventures in the PNW and that has evolved into filming our international travels.

Hi, I have one clarification that might be useful to any future visitors: The driest months in the region you spent most time are May and June. August is actually pretty rainy. July somewhere in the middle. I recommend visiting Norway in June in general, although May is slightly less wet, June is significantly less cold.
A bonus: The more populous European countries often have their school holidays in July, August and sometimes stretching into September, and this inflates the tourist numbers during those months, so by coming early you also beat some of the crowds.

@@HelenandTimTravel August can be rainy but often it is the best time to be high up in the mountains if your are lucky with the weather. Because the snow takes a long time to melt on the highest altitudes so there is less snow in August and still warm weather.

My family lives in Alesund and they always drive me to those places whenever I visit them. I miss Norway

The right to roam applies not only to publicly owned land but also to privately owned land. Most of the land in Norway is privately owned. The law says: Allemannsretten (meaning "everyman's right") is a law that allows everyone to roam free on uncultivated land in Norway. Cultivated land means privately owned land, meadows, pastures, gardens, building plots, and industrial sites. In a practical sense, this means that you are free to responsibly hike, camp and enjoy the fresh air in forests, mountains, and coastal areas, which make up the majority of Norwegian nature.
Norway’s Right to Roam is a free common good and is part of our cultural heritage. It entitles you to make use of uncultivated land, whoever the owner is. Nature is for everyone who exercises caution.

Skåla up is a famous uphill race in Norway.

how would you compare Western Norway vs Lofoten Islands? ..if you were to pick one !! :)
Ohhhh that is a tough choice! Both are very different from each other and very beautiful. We do know that if we return to Norway, we would hands down go to explore Lofoten more. It is more difficult and more expensive to get to and visit, so there are fewer people. Not as many cruise ship ports as in the West Fjords. If this helps, the beauty of Lofoten made Helen cry multiple times 🙃

We had a 9 day rental. Here is the cost breakdown in Norwegian krone for our summer 2023 rental. Prices can change ☺️
Wi-Fi Router (without data): kr95,00
Final cleaning: kr750,00
Unlimited Mileage: kr0,00
Full insurance: kr1.125,00
Outdoor pocket shower: kr200,00
Additional Taxes VAT (25%): kr4.570,00
Total Amount: kr22.850,00 ($2,100 USD total or $233 USD per night) We found it average $250 per night depending on rental company
Additionals for 9 days
Toll passings (452 NOK) and for added camping furniture, unlimited internet data, voltage converter (1227,5 NOK)

Those cameras are not speed cameras. They are for the automatic payment of toll roads
Thanks for watching and the information. Our campervan rental company did let us know after and now we can’t edit out that part out 😆 We did read online there are unmarked cars with speed cameras. Is that true?
@@HelenandTimTravel Yes, I do believe that is true. Once it was required by law that every speed trap should be announced with a sign warning road users about upcoming controls. However, now it is possible to encounter speed traps without any prior warning. But this practice is not as common as in Denmark (where I live). Here, they hide everywhere, ready to fine you thousands for speeding just 4 km/h above the limit
@@looo571 We did notice in some countries they offer warning signs for speed cameras. It was a common practice in Italy. Interesting that it was once required and now it is not. We would love to go to Denmark someday and it's good to know there are speed traps there. Wow, that's a lot of money for a speeding fine!
In Norway fixed/automated cameras still needs to be announced (sign post). There aren't too many of them, and many of them are empty (just the box, no camera inside) - but you never know which one is active and which is not.
Cars with speed cameras are basically unmarked police cars, and there aren't too many of those either. Mostly in the vicinity of big cities.
Heh. Your pronounciation of Norwegian place names is more that decent enough. I notice that English native speakers (like the UK, US) have this tendency of adding extra letters or even syllables when trying to pronounce Scandinavian (and German) words. I dunno where that comes from. Some sort of selective dyslexia perhaps :) "Oh, that's a difficult word. I gotta take a deep breath and get it over with as soon as possible", or something like that ;)
Haha thanks! We definitely have a tendency add syllables and letters. German is also a difficult language linguistically. I just think we don't often use a lot of using different parts our mouth, like the roof of the mouth to speak. This is a funny comment and made us laugh! Hopefully we somewhat passed your test 🙃
