Seattle police on pace to lose more officers than it gains in 2024

- The Seattle Police Department said Monday that it will lose more officers this year than it gains.
In 2024, the department had 40 departures and only gained 15, and is projecting more separations than hires this year. The revised projection is that there will only be 918 deployable officers by the end of the year, despite an increase in base pay and $30,000 signing bonuses.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has been pushing for the city to accept different testing methods in order to speed up the recruiting procedures. But last week, the Public Safety Civil Service Commission suggested staying the course.

Why are they acting like they don’t know why this is happening? Has nothing to do with pay, bonuses, recruiting space, etc…

The reasons are political and lack of public support and villification by the public. Why go somewhere where you are not wanted?
If you wanna be abcoo go to idaho or aomehere you will be valued and appreciated
The social experiment failed. Time to hold some politicians accountable for their policies.
Isn't this what the citizens of Seattle want?
Yes!
Zombie acc
Pretty clearly it is.
The Majority of people that live in Seattle rent so they have no skin in the game.
Negative. I am born and raised in Seattle and most of the people who live in Seattle now are transplants, bringing in their ideals from other cities. They have no investment in the betterment of Seattle or awareness of the beauty the city had. Its sad to see what the city has become.
City Clowncil is the direct cause, who are among the highest paid in the country 😢
Who also get private security forces on tax payer dollars
Critics would say that if Seattle City Council seats paid, say, $70,000 per year instead of $140,000- then only the wealthy and/or retired would run.

Look who they voted into office so they could wheel and deal and make our addictions flourish with no consequences and no power by the police taken away by the mayors and increasing 3 g of dope you can have treatment has never been brought up as a solution by the politicians.
Who would want to be a cop in Seattle? Crime is legal now. There's an armed guard in our upscale grocery store.😮😮
Don’t know. My brother is trying to get me (with a criminology degree) to become a cop in either Seattle, Portland, or California and I told him that that’s a literal depiction of hell from the Bible. I will NOT become an officer in any western state.
The leaders of those cities are to blame. These clowns are saying it's because of retirements, but fail to mention it was their policies that drove them to retire.
No the idiots who elect the “leaders” of the city are to blame, now they get to reap the benefits of their idiocy
"We all have to do better" -- so says Councilman Saka. And what the heck does that look like???
Saka is a big disappointment to the people in West Seattle.
Welp, sucks to keep voting for bad policies.
Crime just continues getting out of hand each and every day, and officers are just getting fed up with it.
They are getting tired of arresting a person only to see them on the streets a day latter.
Seattle you get everything deserve with lack of police.
hey dummy we never defunded the police not one penny.
Seattle is a zoo.
More like a cesspool
Gov spent the most of budget for illegal immigrate , not safety for people and business ....Should be change to political side ( Rep )
If I were LE and looking for an area to work Phoenix would be the best option. You would not look at losing everything like you could in the Blue States.
Better keep voting democrat! That seems to be working. Seattle is an embarrassing dump!
They want to destroy the entire west coast.
When will they realize not all problems can be fixed with money? The pay isn’t the problem, it’s the lack of respect we show police officers. Regardless of what you do for a profession how would you like it if every move you make at work is examined under a microscope?
Get ready to start protecting yourself...because when seconds count cops minutes away...good
Job voters....
Seattle can have better Police and Staffing increase, When Seattle's Judges are replaced as well as the Laws Rewritten for harsher punishment. No more Catch and Release.
Why do media continue to tell the public(folks who want to steal, destroy, etc.) what our public safety lacks? I know you're supposed to inform but you're also helping the ones who seek to so harm. So you're helping them more!
If they are willing to accept and look past my 1st and only 2017 misdemeanor DUI, I would work for them in a heartbeat unfortunately the standards to apply are unrealistic hence why they are where they are.
Application is up 300%.. Still not enough cops. Lower the standards i guess...
Don't you dare give up woman! Listen you can do this Chief! Come on you got it in you!
Why are the numbers so different between the Mayors office and the media?
THIS IS THEIR PLAN FOLKS! PHASE TWO IS HIRING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS TO ENFORCE THE NEXT PHASE .
Hahahaha. Glad I left that dump 20 years ago.

News dude dresses like a Pee Wee Herman impersonator. Long live Pee Wee.
I moved out of Seattle to find out it’s all of Washington as a whole. Small towns smaller cities. Moved out of state and wow felt like pleasantville. Happier and nicer people and when I talk about crime in Washington they say wow that’s like our small pockets of ghettos. Just blows my mind how people in Wa thinks it’s so great or it will eventually get better. Only get worst. As a German that was hired as an engineer I thought sorry U.S my time is limited here but my new home begs to differ. Oh and before you say go back… U.S hired me due to limited in my profession. I’m what U.S use to be get the best.
My 2 police officer friends QUIT, retired early, and MOVED AWAY due to the BLM, “woke” summer 2020 b.s., disrespect from the city, and ridiculous Seattle “Progressive” locals that all hate police. ……They’re VERY HAPPY they left Seattle!!
No they didn't, they quit because cops are finally being held accountable for their criminal actions. In this age of smart phones people are filming cops violating the Constitution and basic citizens rights and more cops than ever are being charged and investigated. That's why your buddies quit the force, it's too hard for police to follow the Constitution and they don't want to be arrested and charged with a crime. The number of cops nationwide dropped after Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd, cops aren't getting away with the nasty shit they'd been pulling for years.
That's why, dude. That's why.
@@avestuartis that the same reason why the Black female police chief Carmen Best quit during the same issues?
No, it was due to lack of support. They let the capitol hill precinct get taken over. ..
@@kevinpankanin6222 I can see that you're not very smart and that you're struggling. Again, a lot of Seattle officers left the force because they don't want to work in an environment where they might actually be held accountable. Learn the difference. This is also why cities (not just Seattle) are struggling to find police recruits. Come on man, be smarter.
Your friend is a violent physcopath, good.
Losing the good officers too - that is going very badly in the failed city of Seattle. Voting matters. No good cops want to work for a toxic city who frees criminals and doesn't backup the Police in fighting crime. Big city failures drive away good police officers as well as tax paying non-criminal residents.
Look at the cities with too few officers. If you live in any one of these cities it’s clear to see why nobody wants to be a cop in any of them.
Remember when they all cut funding
And then kicked out the non vaxxed cops and have not offered them their jobs back...
Then they are so short staffed that they have to do overtime. Which leads to actually increased costs
How is possible that crime is increasing and mayhem seems to be the norm, that Seattle has $30,000 to give out in bonuses?
If you don't have a prosecuting attorney who can and will prosecute and hold criminals with jail time why do you need a police force?
Yeah they are getting huge numbers in applications but mostly from criminals.
It's sad what's happening on the streets and still no treatment is offered to help invention
Yes there is. As well as free housing I'd you get clean. Most of the folks living on the street choose to be. Go and ask them or find the countless videos of interviews. Andrea Suarez is who we need
It will not change until the politics change. Stop worry about Federal issues. Care about your city and state.
VOTE REICHERT!!!
The question should be why are officers leaving.
If Tim eyeman was mayor our Seattle would be great
What happens to the Robocops? We got Robocops since the 80's.

That’s what happens when you’re too picky over candidates who stole candies when they’re 10, meanwhile your chief fiddles around with female officers. Hard to feel bad.
Can I apply as a dispatcher and not cop
Probably bored just walking around since that's all they're all allowed to do.
Live in it Seattle! You voted for it, YOU got it! 😂
The majority of people that live in Seattle rent so they have no skin in the game...they can move at the drop of a hat.
Simple.....politics
Good news for us criminals. Time to go to work.
Here we go KOMO found another crisis
Seattle is in crisis
Go Woke.....Go Broke.....
There are things that we could do that would render police less offensive to the public, like not training them in Israel, ending qualified immunity, making it illegal for police to lie during interrogation... there is a very long list!
How are we working on the projects of the Defund Police movement?
Less cops, less problems overall. Society's problem can't be solved by hiring more cops. This is what media and their conventional authoritative minds who sits on top will tells you. The failure of crime is not having an innovative out-of-box thinker starting with the mayor and the usually inept, city council members. Police chiefs and their officers are only trained by enforcing law, not social issues. And even then, that's questionable.
Exactly, and to go further cops aren't trained very well to begin with in the area of basic law, the Constitution and basic rights of citizens. They violate these things all the time and in the age of smart phones and cameras more and more cops are being caught and charged. There needs to be an overhaul in how officers are trained, nobody wants to be a cop if they're at risk of being charged for a crime they were trained to do to begin with.
Police are a bandage fix to the problems caused by the current system. With that being said, if you remove police it creates a power vacuum that will be quickly filled by gangs and mayhem, which is already happening. You will always have someone to rule over you and tell you what to do.
The reason nobody wants to be a police officer is because more and more cops are being held accountable for their actions. Cops aren't trained very well, most don't even really understand the Constitution and basic rights, the academy doesn't teach them and field training officers also don't train them in the principles of basic rights. Departments spend a lot of time training officers to be aggressive, use defensive tactics and to search for more crimes during basic stops. They aren't trained in basic law nor citizen rights at all. The numbers of police officers dropped after Derek Chauvin was arrested and charged with the murder of George Floyd. So people don't want to be cops because cops aren't well-trained and are finally being held accountable. Train them better and maybe you'll get more recruits.
George Floyd has nothing to do with Seattle
@@kevinpankanin6222 Wrong, he does. A lot of Seattle officers resigned after Chauvin was arrested. They don't like that police are being held accountable. THAT'S what George Floyd has to do with Seattle there, buddy.
Honorable have the same police who patrol our ne-gro Indian neighborhoods just start patrolling all the wealthy surrounding neighborhoods instead. Then all will be ok.
