    Nearly 100% driver fault but seems to me that you were watting out those pedals in what is a very fluid and unpredictable environment. You had 2 road users turning off and into your lane 5 senconds before this but you still doing like 30+kmph. We only cycle that speed in NL when its a clear straight often segregated lane - and that's when we are sporting, not commuting... Too fast for sure.

      The GoPro makes it look faster than it was, maybe 20mph (I have a single speed so don't have much top end). I stopped pedaling soon as I caught the car that pulled out and coasted. If the indicator hadn't had stopped I'd have backed off further, however once it stopped I was just waiting for the car to pull away.

    This is just a fundamental flaw in the concept of separate lanes. There is only ONE left most lane and traditionally that is used for left turns. Breaking that format causes accidents. It should be illegal to pass the last car on the outer lane while approaching an intersection. It just isn't safe. He was signaling (I can't begin to understand the discussion otherwise, he was, and re-activated it imediately) but he should have seen you and obviously shouldn't have driven off. All that is details though. Until cars are self driving or this arrangement is fundamentally changed/restricted, cyclists will keep getting hurt this way. I NEVER pass the last car approaching an intersection without slowing DRASTICALLY. It's just not safe.

    • @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007
      @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007  5 років тому +2

      I had no intention of passing him, you can see that I stopped pedaling as soon as I caught up to the rear of the car and never restart, so I'm slowing the whole time, cruising behind and to the left of the car.
      At the point the indicator stopped, I was expecting the car to pull away (not uncommon for cars to be slow or if junctions then pull away) so continued cruising.
      The driver then indicates again just a few metres from the turning, brakes (which is why I'm now alongside as the driver is on the brakes sooner than me and therefore slows faster) and turns. I haven't timed it but I uspect it's less than a second between the driver indicating and turning. I had nowhere to go. Even then I very nearly stop in time to avoid a collision, one inch shorter and he wouldn't have gone over my wheel.
      The driver activated the indicator, so knew it was off. Knowing that they had indicated last second, and knowing that there's a cycle lane the driver should have checked that it was clear before turning. That's inexcusable, as is driving off without stopping.
      The larger issue is that many people do not consider the cycle lane to be a genuine separate lane of traffic. Whether you indicate or not, if you're crossing a separate lane then you have to check it's clear first.

    • @bigring6424
      @bigring6424 5 років тому

      You did ultimately slow and you did avoid getting too hurt because of it. You didn't stay enough behind him to avoid an $80 risk and that's human nature, and he did fail to look ( or care?). That's what it all is.
      Yes, it may be less than a second between the indication and turn, although I think it's more. The first indication is obscured behind your arm but the camera caught the glow of the indicator just starting to light before it went behind your arm and another as it emerges past your arm. Both of these are easy to miss at full speed. It's also probably less than a second between the indicator cancelling and him re-engaging it. His indications were not the problem here. You could see that there was a second possible turn coming up faster than his ability to even get an advanced cancellation. There's no double-turn signal. But you knew that was a possibility and could allow for it. I'm not saying you were wrong. I'm just saying this kind of thing WILL keep hapening and being right wont prevent it, ever. I'm NEVER for that as an excuse (or rationale) for the driver. It's not. But complaining about what people do or don't consider isn't going to fix it. Many drivers come into the city rarely and might not even have experience with cycle lanes. Turning across a straight-going lane is NOT proper design, but you'd rather not advocate to change that because it means having to file in behind traffic at junctions.
      Of course driving off without stopping is criminal and inexcusable.

    • @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007
      @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007  5 років тому

      Fundamentally it's just an accident, and those will always happen when humans are involved.
      In this case, the driver failed to follow several of the rules of the Highway Code, I was not in beach of any of them. My fault was to make an incorrect assumption of the drivers intentions, a reasonable assumption based on the drivers indication but ultimately the wrong one. Thankfully I was already slow and it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
      That said we can't excuse drivers just because they make not know the roads. The cycle lane was clearly marked, and if you're not used to roads then you take more care, not less. And if you do have a collision you have to stop at the scene. Fortunately this sort of thing is very rare for me and I hope it never happens again.

    • @bigring6424
      @bigring6424 5 років тому

      @@ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007 The problem is still this traffic configuration. So long as cyclists insist on "separate" lanes and this is our notion of "separate" and they want to be able to avoid filing in behind cars at junctions to save time, or so cars can pass by and obscure vision of cyclists at junctions, then this will keep happening. Cars would never be allowed to turn across other lanes of car traffic moving in the same direction. It isn't safe.

    • @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007
      @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007  5 років тому

      @@bigring6424 I don't insist on separate lanes, and in many places there are none. And I don't need a cycle lane to filter to the front at the lights, the joy of cycles being small and narrow means it's easy to filter irrespective of whether there's a lane or not.
      I also drive my car in London, it's very easy to identify the cycle lane and takes a second to check it's clear before turning across. There's a cycle lane across the end of my road so I turn across it every time I use my car. If there's a cycle coming I wait. It's simple, you just have to look. This driver didn't look, the infrastructure isn't to blame, it's a far simpler concept to grasp than a multi lane roundabout. The real issue here is that some drivers simply don't look for cyclists, and they should.

      Car pulls out ahead, I stop pedalling and coast to see what they would do, expecting the car to pull away up the road, that's confirmed the second the indicator stopped and hence I didn't back off. Driver then flicks it back on and turns in a split second and I can't react in time.
      Don't get me wrong, I could have done better and if I had I wouldn't have had a front wheel squashed. • @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007
      @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007  5 років тому

      I was holding back, you can see from my knees that I stop pedalling as soon as I initially close in on the car.
      When the indicator stopped I thought I knew what the driver was doing, I still don't start pedalling as I'm waiting for the car to pull away up the road. I had no desire to undertake it. The late second indication and turn, just a few meters from the junction didn't give me time or space to avoid it. I was only alongside the car as it braked before I did (as I was reacting to it) so it slowed faster.
      If the car had kept the indicator on I would have braked a lot earlier to hold back, knowing they would turn.
      Indicators auto cancel the second you straighten the wheel. The indicator stayed on longer after the initial pull out meaning that the driver planned to turn again. The driver then cancels that indicator, probably thinking that the road ahead is not the one they want. That's the point I think they are going to carry on. Then at the last minute the driver realises, in fact that is the road they wanted all along and indicates and swings in all in one move, without checking their mirror and blind spot. And that's the accident in a nutshell.
      It's of those things, however if the driver had looked properly (especially knowing they'd made a last minute change of mind), they would have seen a cycle on the inside in the cycle lane and would have waited before turning.

    By every letter of the law the car driver is in the wrong. But this happens ALL the time. You shouldn't put yourself in potential situations like this by just ploughing down the inside of vehicles. A dotted line marking a bike lane gives you no protection whatsoever. Drivers are also allowed to cross that line when turning or avoiding obstructions in their own lane. Something you're taught on a defensive riding/driving course is to expect every car to do this, hang back and give yourself somewhere to go. The letter of the law is no good at all when you've been flattened.

      Cult Watch: *Sorry cyclist but YOU are in the wrong* & *This is why you should pay road tax and have insurance and number plates.* Stop with the victim blaming, and best stop with that level of ignorance. No one in the UK pays road tax, as that is a type of tax that was abolished in 1937. What drivers do pay, however, is a tax that is based on a vehicle's emission (Known as VED\vehicle excise duty). The more emission a vehicle lets out, the more you pay. That is why owners of electrical vehicles pay no tax on their vehicle, just as cyclists pay no tax on their bicycle because their vehicle does not let out any emission.
      You don't need a license or compulsory insurance to ride a bicycle, because riding a bike imposes a very little risk to the public - to other people lives and their properties. Driving does impose a high risk, no matter if you drive a car or a motorcycle, and that is why one needs a license and compulsory insurance to operate such vehicles. That being said, research does show that most cyclists have a license to drive (It is estimated between 80%-90% have it) and many cyclists have insurance on their bicycle (Bicycle insurance is very cheap, and many have it through their home insurance). Did you also know that there are many many motorized vehicles out there without insurance being used on the road? It is said that there are more uninsured drivers on the road than uninsured cyclists. I highly recommend you to read about the license and insurance part for cyclists online, as there are many great articles out there explaining why license or compulsory insurance and registration plates for cyclists is both pointless and harmful against cycling.

    It’s your fault, why would you undertake at that speed approaching a left turn with a car on your right without being fully aware, totally your fault, you should be more aware of what might happen when you ride irresponsibly

    • @ryansedgwick-londoncycling9007

      I wasn't undertaking, the car stopped indicating so I was expecting it to pull away. You can see from my knees that I stop pedaling once after it pulls out in front of me. I only end up alongside because the driver brakes suddenly.
      Secondly, how can it be totally my fault when the Highway Code States that, when turning you have to give way to any vehicle using a cycle lane (last bit of the extract below)? The driver did not follow rules 182 or 183 below. Even if I was undertaking (which I wasn't), the driver is still at fault as they are crossing a cycle lane to make the turn and haven't checked the mirror, given sufficient indication or given way.
      182
      Use your mirrors and give a left-turn signal well before you turn left. Do not overtake just before you turn left and watch out for traffic coming up on your left before you make the turn, especially if driving a large vehicle. Cyclists, motorcyclists and other road users in particular may be hidden from your view.
      183
      When turning
      keep as close to the left as is safe and practicable
      give way to any vehicles using a bus lane, cycle lane or tramway from either direction.

    The general common sense of the road says ... if you can stop in time you didn't give the other vehicle enough distance or yourself enough distance! As a motorcyclist, I'm astounded by your approach to riding and putting yourself in positions with no way out. It's call anticipation and reading the road ahead. Hazzard perception in the driving world! .. and you think you have it, but on many occasions show you haven't. You always second guess and assume what the other driver is going to do rather than assess the option of what they MAY do! The more of your videos I watch, the worse my opinion of you and your common sense becomes. That said the car driver should have used their inside mirror to check before turning in, but like motorcycles, a quick glance doesn't always see small frontal area obstacles (at speed) coming up the inside. Ride more for the conditions and environment, not for your own mad rush to get from A to B and ride safely!

      I avoided a more serious incident here, it was minor, just a slightly buckled wheel.
      Very poor driving and indicating, plus the driver leaving the scene of a collision as they likely knew they were in the wrong. I was expecting the car to pull away up the road, an expectation strengthened when the indicator cancelled after the driver pulled out.

      @@simonbaxter8001 I have the same reply because in all my incidents I am following the rules and looking where I’m going. The incidents are caused by the other road user ignoring the rules and not looking.
      A lot of commenters on here are hypocrites, their view is that it’s fine for other road users to ignore the rules, cyclists have to take responsibility for that. Always the cyclists fault.
      My view is that it’s everyone’s responsibility to follow the rules and not cause incidents. Hence I continue to put up videos showing the danger caused when people ignore the rules.
      It’s a very fair point that just because you follow the rules doesn’t make it safe, you have to adjust for incidents happening around you. I do this, and I have very few issues. This video is one of the rare times I misread the situation and got it wrong. Still was minor however and still the cause was this driver not following the rules, not indicating properly, not checking mirrors, not giving way when turning across a cycle lane. Had that driver driven properly this would never have happened.

Soon as I catch the car I stop pedaling and coast, assuming that the driver will accelerate up to 30mph and pull away, as the indicator cancels I think that my assumption is correct and the car will pull away. Then I'm caught out when the driver slows, indicates and turns with very little notice and I can't stop in time.
      20mph on that road is perfectly reasonable, the cars are typically doing 30mph along that stretch. I just got caught out by a bad piece of driving.
