In about 71 I went to see Linda Ronstadt, she was opening for some guy named Jackson Brown , who I hadn’t heard of at the time. But I knew the song “Doctor My eye”when he played it.. All these years later, the main thing I remember about the show was Jackson Brown’s slide guitar player, David Lindley !!

I am a child of '82, actually graduated high school that year. Anyhow, I am watching a 'Miami Vice" rerun yesterday and I hear this song 'Mercury Blues' playing in the episode and I was blown away how great that song was and realized after 'googling' song and author, never heard of 'David Lindley'.. Now, just to find out he passed away this month. I feel like I may have missed out on something way back then. Wish I had the time and means to see this 'cat' back in the good Ole 80's!

I am 72 years old and saw him play twice. Once at the Commodore Ballroom for New Years and at the Pacific National exhibition in Vancouver, B. C. Two of the best concerts I ever attended! It’s okay to be old now to have been young then. R.I.P.

One of a kind…the very best kind. Always a refreshing break from everyday musical monotony. A strange and wonderful genius, hero to many lap steel guitarist. Safe to say there’ll never be another. I’ll always miss him…but his musical legacy will brighten my sadness. Loves ya, Mr. Dave!

RIP to the great one. I wish he knew a group of college girlfriends in southern Minnesota rocked out to him in the 80's and continued to be major fans our entire lives. We are all heartbroken and will be playing his music forever with smiles on our faces as we dance, dance, dance.

The King of Polyester in all his finery! So sad that he is no longer with us. What a wonderful musician, a master of virtually any stringed instrument you care to name. I was lucky enough to see him with Jackson Browne at the annual Marquee series of concerts in Cork, Ireland some years ago. He was fantastic. He has been one of my heroes since the 1970s. Those El Rayo X albums ('El Rayo X', 'Win This Record' and 'Very Greasy') are a must for inclusion in any serious music collection. By all accounts, he was a fine human being too! Condolences to his wife Joan and daughters. Gone but never to be forgotten. His legacy is immortal. RIP, Mr. Dave. Thank you for the wonderful music you gave us throughout your career.

Just found out about David's death and am pretty much sobbing through this entire concert. Wow, what a huge part he was of my formative years as a music fanatic. About 4 years ago, I found vinyl copies (Which I had 40 years ago then sold) on eBay of his first 3 records for about $3 bucks each plus postage. I know what I will be doing today!

I've been crying intermittently for 3 days now. I feel blessed to have seen Lindley 4 times with ElRayo-X and in various solo and duet configurations including with Ry Cooder, with Jackson, and with Hani or Wally on percussion. Otis Gibbs posted a poignant remembrance of Lindley on his UA-cam channel; and Henry Kaiser posted some home movies of he and Dave playing with local musicians in Madagascar for what became the World Out of Time recordings (look on the Cuneiform Records channel for the Madagascar videos).

I'm sad to hear that David Lindley passed away a few days ago. I lively remember this Loreley concert of German TV Broadcast "Rockpalast" which I saw live on TV with my best friends. I still own the cassette tape recorded in parallel to the broadcast. Being curious in the beginning, I became a fan of David and followed his musical career. Even today I'm fascinated of his skills in playing string instruments. So happy to have lots of vinyl records and CDs to keep his memory alive.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Dave. May your family be able to remember the good times with you.

    leaned into those blazing loud

I met him once and got to talk to him for a little bit at a gig; I had teenagers with me who were budding musicians and David and Wally gave the kids drumsticks and snare brushes and guitar picks and autograph there T- shirts. The kids were on cloud 9 for weeks afterwards! He let me handle one of his acoustic lap steels (not an original Weissenborn, but a Mexican-made clone) which weighed about as much as a feather.

The instrument is called a Melobar. I was fortunate enough to see David play live a number of times including 4 times with ElRayo-X but he never used the Melobar and always had his double neck Supro lap steel with him. That slide guitar through a Dumble amp from about 8' away as I stood next to the stage is a sound I will never forget!

David Lindley was great. His playing with the legendary 60s band 'Kaleidoscope' was wonderful. 'Kaleidoscope' made 'reasonable' records, but were sensastional live. They were loved by critics in England, and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, who was really influenced by them, far more than most people realize.

I was fortunate to catch Mr. Dave and El Rayo-X a couple of times. 1st 2 times I saw him he was opening for the Dead at Laguna Seca in '88. He was freaking OUTSTANDING! A perfect opening act for the Dead and since it was a General Admission show so the place was packed as soon as the gates opened. It was great to see all the heads get really into him and the band. Opening for the Dead was a tough gig as the Heads can get a little restless waiting for the main show. Not the case here! He could have played 2 more hours and the crowd would still be clamoring for more. The 2nd day was the same thing but there were probably more people.
The third time was a New Year's Eve gig @ the Kaiser in Oakland. It was Him and El Ray-OX, The Neville Bros, Bonnie Raitt and the headliner Little Feat. The Dead were playing up the road at the Oakland Coliseum which was a hard ticket to get. But all the folks who couldn't get in to the Dead show went to this gig at the Kaiser. Again David and the band crushed it to a very enthusiastic crowd that was very into him.
Sadly those were the only three gigs of his I saw but each one left a huge impression on me. He was sharing the bills with some great bands but his performances practically stole the show each time!! They were an Incredibly talented band who played great, fun music. RIP Mr Dave!

I saw David L & El Rayo X in 1985 and 1986 in eureka, Calif at the Old Town bar & GRill for $5, after a co-worker talked me into going. He had the Reverend Smittie on keyboards and a cuban bass player (I believe), it was beyond amazing. I was sitting on the monitor next to the stage, 2 feet from him and his slide guitar. I swear that at the beginning of the 2nd show, he said "magic little darling", right before he placed a small square of white paper on his tongue. He proceeded to then shred for almost 4 hours on the slide, just going completely off the reservation into the musical territory of legends. I also saw him in the late 80's with ry cooder, it was good but not the same as him with El Rayo X. This video brings back some great memories.

Lindley appeared here in Vancouver at The Town Pump many times to play a night there but his real goal was to visit one of his best friends, legendary Long John Baldry, a resident of the West End. Many times I've gone to hear the show and every time an unusually tall man would be sitting at one of the tables closest to the stage. Sadly, Baldry died some years ago and I don't think Lindley has returned. Some day, perhaps he will.

The "Saz" at 35:03 is actually a bouzouki neck grafted onto the body of a Vox "Bill Wyman" teardrop bass, with earthquake sensors as additional pickups.

The show starts out with distorted sound but gets better at about 6 minutes in. Can't argue with the quality of the playing!

Love Dave. Saw him three times, but only once with the band. Late 80s? At the local Vancouver summer fair, called the PNE. A lovely outside stage with a pond between the bleachers and stage. Setting sun lit the performers, who were all great. Ticket to the fair got you a seat for the show. At some point in the middle of the set, some guy proceeded to climb the high-dive ladder, which was next to the stage. This completely distracted the crowd, but the band couldn't see what was happening because of the stage wings. But they could see that nobody was watching them. After a song Dave asked what was going on. We pointed, and he came out front for a look. By then the local security had pursued the would-be diver up the ladder. Once he reached the top and realized he had no escape, he went for the big jump into the pool below. In spite of a crew of rent-a-cops waiting around the pool, he somehow eluded them and a merry chase ensued until he was finally led away. All that fun and a great show too!

Just as good as musical entertainment gets, from every aspect. Thank you 😅. About the same age as these guys, I think now of Don Mclean’s song American Pie in which he refers to that generation’s “father, son and holy ghost” (1950’s). To me, the 1970’s + characters are Browne, Zevon and Lindley.

I saw him with J.J. Cale at The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, CA (San Diego). One of the best shows EVER & I'm a 49 year old who's seen hundreds of epic concerts.
This was J.J.'s second to his final show at The Belly Up around 2004 or so? Just a guess. I still have the stub.
    Amazing "Minglewood Blues" that night.

      @@lastnamefirst4035 I miss him too.
I used to live in Fallbrook, CA about 30 minutes from his place in Escondido.
In 1993, when I was living in Humboldt, I drove down to see him open for Phish solo at The Greek Theatre. It was fantastic!
I bet Phish was concerned: "How do we follow JJ Cale?"
They would have been right too.
Phish was so dull & boring at that show, lol. I was only into them for about a year around 1992 before I realized they were just too goofy for me. Trampolines, vacumes & D&D nerdy lyrics.
It blew my mind when every head in the world made them instant millionires after Garcia passed?! Most Dead Heads are pretty clueless musiclly. It was more about the circus party tour than anything.
I was bummed I missed the last Grateful Dead run at Berkeley in 1989. What an amazing venue.
Never caught a Frost Amp. show either.
Cal Expo was as good as it got after '89.
I was just a year too young to see so many great '89 GD shows. My first was April 89 @ Irvine when I was 15.
Best venue I ever saw JGB at was a weekend atop Sqaw Valley & Electric on the Eel River, both in 1991.
Overall though, I've seen more phenomenal shows by a wide variety of artists than anyone I know.
