No, I wasn't joking when I said Howl's Moving Castle was my least favorite Ghibli movie. Different people have different opinions, and my opinion is that it's a beautiful film with a disjointed mess of a plot.
Howl's Moving Castle is a "love it or hate it film" with subjective opinions. Yes the animation is great but has to be connected with a good plot. Animation itself can't be the only reason to watch something with a bad story (would that mean muting the volume) or overpraise something because the technically sound animation makes everything better than it really was. Tales From Earthsea, Pom Poko, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor the Yamadas, Ponyo, Ocean Waves, Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, and From Up on Poppy Hill are also debated upon.
Princess Mononoke is definitely my favorite Miyazaki film as well. I really love Howl's Moving Castle too, though I can see why it might not be high up on your list.
Every year I give it another chance, and every year, I'm still disappointed. That said, I reached a turning point with Castle in the Sky this year--I finally get what's so great about it and I really enjoy it now--so you never know how it'll go this year!
I've was always looking for a overview of a collection from The Castle Of Cagliostro to When Marnie was there. What great masterpieces! To me a more appropriate title is When Studio Ghibli Was There.
Great video. My top five is pretty similar to yours however mine is in a slightly different order. 1. Only yesterday-beautiful and nostalgic. 2. Princess kaguya-wonderful and magical. 3. Kiki's delivery service-charming and heartwarming. 4. Princess Mononoke-mature epic. 5. Grave of the fireflies-tragic, sad but beautiful.
Nice! Yeah, you can see I have Fireflies right up there behind Ocean Waves. That said, my order does change from time to time; I can't remember what it was that it took for Castle in the Sky to finally click with me, but it's definitely not my least favorite anymore!
Michael Burns I haven't seen ocean waves yet I've heard mixed things about it. I also really like howls moving castle I would definitely have it in my top 10. I need to rewatch castle in the sky as I can't remember much about it. My top 4 are set in stone now as I've been rewatching all of my Ghibli movies over the past few weeks. My number 5 could change as I still have a few more to watch over the next week or so.
Javier, I have On Your Mark... in fact, you can see it near the beginning of the video! I'll talk about it a bit in my next vid, whenever I get that uploaded.
+Michael Burns Ah, it's a shame that this particular disc will never be available in a future, or if it is, it'll be at horrible prices, it's sad because the short looks gorgeous in Blu-ray.. I sadly wont be able to get it when I can make the collection. Too expensive.. all of it. Cannot afford.
You should plan to get On Your Mark sometime! in Yahoo! Auctions or webuy I mean it's a pretty nice short and it's the last part you need to complete the catalogue. If you wanna be a completionist!
Loved the video with it's detailed descriptions! You mentioned a custom protective sleeve that you prefer over the retail packaging, so If I may ask, can you share where one can purchase the sleeves? Also are the sleeves limited to only G2 sizes or can fit G1 sizes as well? Thanks!
+RENEGADExSHinObi hey, I have no excuse for not getting back to you on this, other than I just completely forgot! Here are the bags I'm using. I don't know the difference between G1 and G2, but I can tell you these fit regular DVD cases, GameCube cases, Blu-rays, and these Ghibli releases... all except for Nausicaa. www.ebay.com/itm/100-6x8-Clear-Resealable-Bakery-Goodies-Cookie-Poly-Cellophane-Cello-Bags-/321724121036?hash=item4ae8407fcc:g:q7wAAOxy4dNSr2Yt
Hey Micheal I have another annoying question haha! I also have this entire collection and I too don't really like the plastic bags they come in. Where did you get the replace bags to put them in?
Here you go! www.ebay.com/itm/100-6x8-Clear-Resealable-Bakery-Goodies-Cookie-Poly-Cellophane-Cello-Bags-/321724121036?hash=item4ae8407fcc:g:q7wAAOxy4dNSr2Yt
they all have English subtitles and many have English dubs, but it's much cheaper to just get them from your own country, and most are out everywhere now. :)
It's pretty much a wash these days; you can get great transfers in the U.S. via GKIDS, which are basically identical to the Japanese ones. The only exception I can think of off the top of my head is the copy of Nausicaa that comes in the Japanese Miyazaki box set; it's the best version available on Blu-ray, with a unique transfer that fixes some issues on the original release, and it's only available in that set. But yeah, get the GKIDS versions and don't worry about spending stupid money on these, unless you really love the packaging :)
you must be joking. Howl's moving castle was amazing

I found Ponyo worse than Howls.

I don't speak or understand Japanese, so I will get these movies in English
they all have English subtitles and many have English dubs, but it's much cheaper to just get them from your own country, and most are out everywhere now. :)
Is picture quality superior to the western releases?

@@nusilverWould it be worth picking up Kiki on import? As the GKIDS has dubtitles?
Pom Poko is the best
Where can I buy this Japanese collection?
Amazon Japan and several other places ship globally! You can always try eBay, too.
