To be fair, the quality of those conterfeits has even increased. Got one of them a few days ago (willingly tbh) and the prints are all centered now, the paint in the disc book is on point and the wrap is pretty tight. The only aspects to call it out as a fake is the info page being printed on the back of the box and the discs are still protected by that foil. Facing the fact that the cheapest authentic one I found was at about 500 bucks after taxes and customs, I really can't complain about that counterfeit.
Man, I almost pulled the trigger on one selling on Amazon and this saved me. At this point, this is no longer a complete set anyway since he's coming out of retirement.
Thanks for posting this, I just received a copy from Amazon, but it was exactly like the bootleg copy that you had. I should have been more careful before buying this, I didn't even realize this was a thing, but it was painfully obvious when I got it that it was fake, I just started looking up to see if anyone else had this experience. TONS of people had this experience. Ugh.
There is a much easier way to tell. On the fake the undersides of the disks are a dark colour instead of silver, meaning that they have been burned instead of having been professionally pressed.
I just unwittingly purchased a counterfeit box set on eBay. It looked normal at first from the outside, but then I noticed that the back of the discs were all black where the data was burnt on to them, versus the mirror-image like finish of all of the other Blu-Rays that I own. I also found the fact that the discs were all wrapped in plastic wrap a bit odd. The icing on the cake was when I realized later on that the back of the box said "12-dic collection" and "Hoel's Moving Castle". Oops!
Welp, thank you for this video. Unfortunately, I saw it too late and picked up a bootleg. I think the video is the same quality, and the plastic bag things do a good job keeping it safe, so I guess it wasn’t a total waste.
@UA-cam Is A Punk I have a bootleg and it’s honestly a really well done bootleg, at least the one I got. Like I personally wouldn’t know it was fake if the disc art wasn’t faded. I somehow got lucky and have a legit box just bootlegged discs.
Im surprised noone has mentioned the discs themselves have the burned black back and not a silver shiny pressed back. At least thats what I saw with the dodgy one I was sent
So I bought a bootleg set a few years ago. I don’t regret it because this was before HBO Max offered a price effective way to watch them in HD. Anyways, what’s weird is I actually got a legit box, compared it to a friend that had the a verified real set and the booklet and box were 100 percent legit, but I definitely had bootlegged discs.
Thank you man.. i never heard of this Box and after a minute of research found out that the original price hase been 250$ and now it should be 50$ for a brand new box? .. but now i know, so thanks
Thanks for this. One thing: they're not restricted to Amazon - in my part of the world, anyway. At least two retailers here in New Zealand - Mighty Ape and JB Hifi - offered these. I can't remember the price, but I do remember dividing the price by the number of movies, and realizing there was almost no difference to buying the films individually. The box-set was a little more, if I remember correctly.
the Australasian box set though didn't have them housed in a nice book format; they were all in just individual blu-ray cases which makes it a pretty clumpy box set
Ohhhh..effff! I just realized I bought a fake. Thankfully, I can return it. That's so nasty. Still, my fake looks very well done. Still, not the same as the original, I think.
I know right! It's harder to find a real one than a fake, crazy. I just requested a refund for the other counterfeit that I received. They refunded me almost instantly, and just like in your case they're letting me keep the copy.
That's gotta be the only upside to buying a fake. It seems like 9 times out of 10, if you call them on it, they just let you keep it. Have you done a side by side of the image quality of the movies yet?
The first return is not going so smoothly though. They wanted me to return it, and I'm still waiting for a refund. So far I checked one of the bootlegs, and it looked pretty good. I'm gonna compare them to the real ones when I have time.
I checked all bootlegs and all real ones back to back. They look pretty much identical, must be cause they're all blu-ray. I think some of the real ones looked a little sharper, but I'm not sure. I will have to do a side by side to know for sure. I finally got the refund for the first fake. They waited almost to the last day. Now I'm thinking whether or not to report them cause one of the sellers sold over 70 copies...
Thanks for the vid. Did the same. Ordered one of these on eBay and asked the seller before hand if it was legit. Came in today and instantly tell it was a fake. Put in a return immediately.
Lots of fake Ghibli DVD collections out there being sold by Ebay, Walmart and Amazon. Blatantly fake as there are no real official/genuine counterparts to these collections. And low quality since they cram three movies on single DVD. I am surprised that Ghibli hasn't been able to shut these down.
Thank you so much for making this video, I initially found a thread about bootlegs and then stumbled upon this video, I actually just ordered one yesterday and amazon is saying it's too late to stop it now, but I plan to return it if it ends up being the bootleg version. smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HFFH46W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This is the one I bought, I assumed that since it was backed by the amazon prime logo that it would be safe, guess I'll find out in a day...
I keep finding fake Studio Ghibli Special Edition Collection box sets (supposedly 25 movies on 9 disks) now on Ebay with beautiful art of Totoro with wood-grain effect from supposedly Star Entertainment, in the rare occurrence that you can find a photo of the back cover. I looked up what I think the company is which calls itself, "India's most reputed &Oldest Independent English Film Distribution Company since 1989." (The lack of spaces is taken directly from their website, mind you, and not me forgetting to type them in.) No Ghibli films are listed in their collection currently, and I sincerely doubt they ever did from the quality of the majority films they're currently distributing, if even those are legally being distributed. The fakes also keep calling "Tales of Earthsea" just "Tales of Earth" and contain typos.
Can't find the legit version anywhere so I think I'm just going to get the fake one. The quality of the video is only thing that matters to me and they're the same.
Hi, i notice some listings and bidings on ebay for under $50 (some with stock images and some with images of the product) and after seeing your video, it makes me worried on how to find the real version of the collection. Do you have any tips on how to get the real one online?
I compared real with the bootleg back to back and couldn't tell the difference. If there is a difference, it's barely noticeable. Maybe a side by side comparison would tell, which I plan to do. Another thing that I forgot to mention in the video is that the bootleg discs are blue like BD-R.
my husband ordered me the fake one off amazon unknowingly. $150. too good to be true. 6 of the movies actually work and are good quality, correct menus, etc. but others are either blank with just disney intros, only in japanese audio, or distorted. amazon gave us a full refund. but i still want the real set :(
As someone who isn't experienced in knowing where to search for authentic copies, I'm unsure where too search. Is there anywhere you'd recommend looking? So far the ones I've found all have belly bands visible on the backside or no photo's of the backside.
I'm trying to cancel mine and get a refund at the moment after this. I payed 120$ for it I'm pretty sure it's also a bootleg. Man I was so excited to get this for my gf and that really made me feel bad. Is the quality, menu and interface of the movies identical to the original atleast?
The movies look pretty much identical, same menus and everything. The only thing is that the discs are BD-R. The biggest issue is the box, and the smell.
They are hard to come by, and usually sell for a lot more than the bootlegs. If you do a regular search, and do the research you should find one. Price might put a damper on things though.
Do you think the bootleg is worth buying? I the originals cost upwards of 400 new. Also, can you tell me the name of the ebay seller that sold you the bootleg and allowed a refund?
If you don't care about the authenticity, can handle bad paint smell, and just want to watch/own them, maybe. It is considered piracy, though. Plus the durability of the discs is questionable.
I mean the only thing that matters is playback quality which you don't talk about. Who cares what the box looks like. It's going on a shelf, only to be looked at maybe 5 times a year.
Man dude kick up the energy I felt like you just woke up for this video, and the simplest giveaway for the fake is the belly band is visible all the way around the package while the real one only half of the band is visible on the front while the other half is tucked under the content description paper on the box
Ok that’s understandable I know how much introverts dislike the attention and putting themselves out there. I’m an extrovert so I forget that there are people that think the opposite of what I do, congrats on making the video it will get easier the more you do it just try to make the videos that yourself would enjoy watching and it’ll turn out great.
Your anger and disappointment is palpable
Six years later this is still a valuable video. Thank You! I almost grabbed one from ebay that looks like it must be fake.

Man, I almost pulled the trigger on one selling on Amazon and this saved me. At this point, this is no longer a complete set anyway since he's coming out of retirement.

Ghibli should have made more original ones!
Thanks for this video. You just saved me from buying a fake on Ebay. I guess when deals seem 'too good to be true' they usually are.

This video has saved me a couple of times now.
There's probably more bootleg sets of this than there are of the original print run by this point

Great side by side comparison! Thanks for doing this. I checked ebay and yeah, they seem to be mostly the fakes.

That's crazy how well they make the bootlegs! I'd report them, though I don't know if Ebay will actually do anything.
Thanks for the vid. Did the same. Ordered one of these on eBay and asked the seller before hand if it was legit. Came in today and instantly tell it was a fake. Put in a return immediately.

I just willingly bought a bootleg version for only 20 bucks so I figured for the price why not give it a shot and see how it is
btw thank you so much for this vid!
It's sick & mental, I've tried to find a legit one, but every one available to buy on ebay or everywhere else is a fake. Thanks dude for warning.
Awee i been wanting a real one so bad
You saved me
Dude, your video saved my boyfriend and I. We still can’t’ find a real one but we definitely spotted that fake one we received. Thank you so much!!

Yep, it was a bootleg lol, $130 too, what a shame.

Found the bootleg on wish for €38 thats a steal for a bootleg collection.
Can't find the legit version anywhere so I think I'm just going to get the fake one. The quality of the video is only thing that matters to me and they're the same.
In that case I would recommend getting individual releases. No dubious quality and plenty of extras. Plus you won't be supporting the bootleggers.
@@Turbin100 True. Or I wait it out and hope they re-release the set again, maybe in 4k.
Is the Quality is good ?
Hi,
i notice some listings and bidings on ebay for under $50 (some with stock images and some with images of the product) and after seeing your video, it makes me worried on how to find the real version of the collection.
Do you have any tips on how to get the real one online?
Ask for pictures. If the belly band is visible on the back cover it's a fake.
@@Turbin100 any other tips? Just wondering.
Just curious, can you also tell by the disc contents, like are they all 1080p like the original or is the quality another difference ?

Well fuck, I just bought this
Im looking at ebay and I noticed that different sellers had theirs as the same picture that other sellers had, does that mean its a bootleg
Most likely.
I'm trying to cancel mine and get a refund at the moment after this. I payed 120$ for it I'm pretty sure it's also a bootleg. Man I was so excited to get this for my gf and that really made me feel bad. Is the quality, menu and interface of the movies identical to the original atleast?

@@Turbin100 Thank you! I managed to get a refund atleast I was so worried! It seems like the only legit ones are over 400$ at the moment :(
the blu-ray quality is totally fine. blu-ray quality. you get what you pay for, though. Me personally, I'm totally fine with the box-set :) :)
Could you point me to where you got yours?
eBay. It was a person who had gotten two copies for their birthday. I bought the extra one.
so where do you get the actual copies at?
They are hard to come by, and usually sell for a lot more than the bootlegs. If you do a regular search, and do the research you should find one. Price might put a damper on things though.

No. Ghibli find it hard enough to survive - supporting their bootleggers only helps destroy them.
