Home Arcade Update October 2022: Taking Arcade1UP Marvel Vs Capcom 2 for a ride… to the movies!

I’m really raising the stakes here! Last time I added narration; this time I make an honest to goodness on-screen appearance (and use some licensed music that I will probably have to cut out at some point!) Big news for my home arcade: I had to relocate it! Come check out the new setup, which I've been working on since spring of 2021.

Home Arcade Christmas 2021: ArcadeGameFactory Tempest Marquee, Simpsons, new Donkey Kong High Score

Game room updates for Christmas 2021! A few weeks ago, I sold my Marvel Vs. Capcom cabinet and brought home Arcade1UP’s new Simpsons machine. As you can see, the Hylo-hacked MVSX plays the Marvel/Capcom fighters perfectly, so the only downside is that I’m losing access to Arcade1UP’s online MVC community, which is way more active than the online player base for Simpsons. That said, it’s mostly ...

In the midst of an unusually challenging era, this room has been my sanctuary. My home arcade, which consists largely of 3/4 scale Arcade1UP machines, started in Thanksgiving 2019, why my wife surprised me with TMNT. It’s my second favorite arcade game and was a sort of consolation prize because we couldn’t afford (and didn’t have the space for) a Donkey Kong cabinet. Well, not too long after t...
Arcade1UP Donkey Kong Conversion with ArcadeSD

Presenting my Arcade1UP Donkey Kong conversion! This cabinet started as a clearanced Galaga unit, morphed into a work-in-progress iCade 60-in-1, and then finally evolved into what you see today: a DK-themed multi-game machine built around the excellent ArcadeSD board. I plan to add a coin door to the machine eventually, but for now I’m quite happy with it.

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I set it up in November 2019 (I have an Instagram photo of it from the week before Thanksgiving that year.) If I recall correctly, it actually came out in the summer or fall of 2019. You're right about it being a wave 3 cab! What I remember most about those early days with my first cab is that people were coming over and playing it for a couple of months (it was a Christmas 2019 gift, but my wife let me set it up early since we were having out-of-state Thanksgiving guests)... and then March 2020 hit, and people stopped coming over... for a long time! After that, it ended up just being me playing alone most of the time until my son was old enough.

    Hi Michael, you said your light up marquee upgrade was too bright and you turned the LED lights inside it around. I purchases a new light up marquee and although it is beautiful I do think its too bright. Would you be able to respond with how you made the change to your marquee or make a quick video on it? Thank you for your time!

    • @nusilver
      @nusilver 2 роки тому

      Was it the ArcadeGameFactory marquee? If so, I just removed the screws on the side panels and the marquee so I could get the panel off that hides the insides of the marquee (i.e., the panel with the legal info and serial number on it), then I unslotted the led strip from the bracket it sits in, flipped it around so the leds were facing the backside of the cab, and slotted it back into the bracket. The power cable that goes to the PCB will get pulled a little tight while you're doing this, but it'll be fine once you drop it back into the brackets. The only tricky thing about this is that the sides of the marquee (where the black screws go in) is pretty soft, so I had to make a slight adjustment to get one of the screws back in as the original screw hole (again, on the marquee material, not the side panel) got kind of torn up. I've checked it all around, though; everything is level and the marquee is sitting exactly where I want it. So, no big deal. Hope that's helpful! I don't want to open the cab again for exactly the reasons I just wrote about.

    If your simspons game randomly resets, try replacing the button that is assigned to reset the game. The games on my tempest cab kept resetting. A1up sent me a new board and the same thing was happening. I replaced the 2p button which is assigned to reset the games if you hold it down. Now it works perfectly. It’s a shame that A1up’s customer support didn’t think this was the problem. I’m sure PCBs are more expensive than 1 button!

    Donkey Kong looks great. What did you use for the “fake” t-molding? Pinstripe tape? If so, any tips on using it? Thanks

    • @nusilver
      @nusilver 2 роки тому

      Yes, that's exactly what I used. If I had a router at the time I put this together, I might have used actual t-molding (I installed real t-molding on the CPO), but now that I have a router, I'm a little afraid to mess it up and the pinstriping tape is fine. As far as the application of it: it can be a little tricky. It's easy enough to apply it in a straight line on flat edges and around corners (if it's not straight enough, you can always lift it back off then re-apply), but once you get to the swoop below the control panel and the one on the front of the riser, it tends to pull up on the edges. Most guides will tell you to take it very slow so you don't stretch the tape while applying, but no matter how little you stretch it, it still seems to peel up around those swoops. What ultimately worked to alleviate that issue was to cut a line straight across the tape around the swoops, then lay the tape back down so that you've got an imperceptible gap between what is now two pieces of tape. Would love to see your build if you're putting a Kong together!

      Thanks, man! I've made a couple of tweaks to it since posting this (feels like 15 years ago); swapped the yellow buttons out for orange, and added a coin door decal that looks great (although now that A1UP is starting to put molded coin doors on their cabs, that part's feeling a little less adequate!). If you're considering an ArcadeSD but are taken aback by the price (last time I checked, it was $50 more than when I got it... and it was already expensive then), just know that across the board the emulation is way better than those 60-in-1s you see all over the place. Every game has been great, the interface and customization options are awesome... I love it. I've got six cabs now and while I'm racking up a ton of time on my modded MVSX, this is still my most-played machine. If you do go through with the mod, I hope you'll post a video of the process!

    • @nusilver
      @nusilver 3 роки тому

      Hey Leonard, welcome to the Arcade1UP community! I've got four cabs now and probably won't be adding any more since our game room is the smallest room in our house, but I love going into that room and turning on the machines and hearing that beautiful cacophony of multiple attract modes competing for my attention. I've made just a couple of slight aesthetic tweaks to this cab since I posted this video (a coin-door decal being the main one; you can see it in this photo: twitter.com/snesplay/status/1374398254410960900/photo/1). As far as the process, check out these two threads on Reddit; those will give you a high-level overview of what went into converting my Galaga cab into a Donkey Kong: www.reddit.com/r/Arcade1Up/comments/enlo4o/meet_my_arcade1up_donkey_kong_cabinet/ www.reddit.com/r/Arcade1Up/comments/frxf8c/update_galagadonkey_kong_conversion_complete/ The first thread should be especially helpful in terms of what I used for each part of the exterior. If you see, for example, that I used 1/2" white t-molding, just Google 1/2" white t-molding or search for it on eBay and you'll be able to find some for your project. As I mentioned in that first thread, I started with a 60-in-1 Jamma kit from DIY Retro Arcade (the 60-in-1 is also known as an "iCade"), and my machine was up and running with that kit after just a day or so. Shane from DIY Retro Arcade has a very helpful video tutorial on installing that kit, and you can find that here: ua-cam.com/video/6HIw7MT-ils/v-deo.html I swapped the kit out for the much more expensive ArcadeSD because I wanted as-close-to-perfect-as-possible emulation, and the ArcadeSD is the best out there for the games included on it. Most folks don't need anything more accurate than the 60-in-1 for games like Donkey Kong or Ms. Pac-Man (if you're just playing to play and not going for high scores), although the 60-in-1 does have some issues with a handful of games (a loud whine in Burger Time, for example, and Mario's running sound is wrong in Donkey Kong) and because of that, a lot of people like to build their custom cabs around a Raspberry Pi. I have zero experience with the Pi and can't help you there, but the Arcade1UP subreddit is where I learned everything I needed to turn my cab from a dream to reality. And in general, they're a very friendly group. Hope this is all helpful! If you join the subreddit, you can find me over there as nusilver. Would love to see how your project comes along!

I can say that since I started with DIY Retro Arcade's 60-in-1 kit, the video they have up (about an hour long) should get you most of the way there as far as wiring the JAMMA harness, power, and speaker. There were a few key differences from that point to getting my machine up in its current state though, so I suppose those would need to be addressed. Stay tuned! The only exception I can think of off the top of my head is the copy of Nausicaa that comes in the Japanese Miyazaki box set; it's the best version available on Blu-ray, with a unique transfer that fixes some issues on the original release, and it's only available in that set. Very informative video, thank you. I have Disney's version of the Miyazaki blu ray box, but I've been pretty torn when it comes to getting the Takahata box. So Anne and Gauche both have english subtitles in this release? Meaning that if I bought this box set and then got the Discotek Media blu ray releases of both Horus and Panda Go Panda, then the only Takahata film I that I would have without subtitles for would be Chie, right? Thanks for the help!

    I don't speak or understand Japanese, so I will get these movies in English

      they all have English subtitles and many have English dubs, but it's much cheaper to just get them from your own country, and most are out everywhere now. :)
