I kinda feel like he missed the whole point of Only Yesterday. The whole idea is to evoke a sense of nostalgia in that typical ghibli fashion, and all those simple scenes that may seem drawn-out or pointless are precisely what make it so, so good and enjoyable. One of the things that makes ghibli movies so great is their attention to detail and the way they manage to make even the most trivial matter interesting to watch. Never in my life did I think I would feel so much by watching a scene of a little family eating pineapple for 5 minutes, but the animation, the way they spoke and tried to pretend to like it before admitting it sucked, how they thought of explanations like maybe it's because of this or that. How Taeko just forces herself to eat it even though she visibly dislikes it only because it was her who was the most excited. It all felt so, so real and relatable, I could literally see myself and my family right there, even though that exact scene has never happened to us. And this is just one scene that I talk about because it was mentioned in the video, but there are soooo many that I could go on about forever. So yeah, movies don't need to be so heavily plot-driven in order to be good, sometimes it's enough to create that feeling of something tangible and real. Edit: just because I see many replies mentioning this, I never said that "getting" the movie = automatically liking it. There are many movies I understand yet dislike as well. I just said that I felt the video didn't really "get" the point, at least in my opinion, and that it was a little subjective in presenting and rating it. Oh, and I'm also not simply defending the movie because it's my favourite-I love it, but it's not even close to that. Just thought I should clarify this, thank y'all for being civil, have a nice day :)
Well said. Only Yesterday felt like a breath of fresh air to me.. very relaxing and slow-paced compared to your typical crazy action-packed movie that never takes a minute to let its audience pause, reflect, react, or feel anything. It's not an exciting movie, for sure, but I enjoyed it because it was relatable and touching.
Only few will actually appreciate it i think. It depends on how we lived and how the film connects to us. At first, i thought it would be boring and long but it's fine. I especially love the ending. It gave us a beautifully done conclusion.
Even if it’s not plot driven, there’s many movies and shows that have scenes that make us want to watch and feel good, but idk, only yesterday just got me so bored. I loved the scenes when she was a child, but any scene as her as an adult felt somewhat pointless for some reason. I think it’s just hard for most of us to grasp the meaning, and that’s why it’s hard for us to like it even if others do. I wouldn’t call it a terrible movie though by all means, it’s just not for me and when people dislike it, I see exactly why.
Anne Smith the movie isn’t for everyone, only yesterday Is my favorite ghibli movie by far, it describes incredibly well 70s Japanese family and the director transmite pretty well his values and feelings. I can understand why people doesn’t like this o movie and others ghibli works like grave of the fireflies, tales of the princess kaguya they lack of action and are slow paced.
Getting the point doesn't make it not suck. Commit 100% to illustrating a theme and a mood if you gotta, but it's a high risk film-making strategy since if you DON'T successfully hack the emotions of the audience and make them think you're a genius through the power of nostalgia pineapples... all you're left with is unforgivably boring nothingness.
Man. The main character was boring though. He just liked planes, and smoked around his wife who was having breathing troubles. When she dies he has no reaction at all. Hard pass.
It's kinda sad how unpopular "From Up On The Poppy Hill" seems to be. I thought it was simply beautiful, how it portrayed camaraderie, maturity and teamwork between teens.
it was very realistic as well, the kids had feelings for each other and even when they found out they weren't siblings they didn't get together and i feel like in most movies they would but it's nice bc irl most people would not want to be in relationship with someone who might have been yer brother yk
Yess, I love From up on poppy hill, I love the colors and the magic of the clubhouse. I mean, it's so positive considering that it is a "real life" based film, I loved the plot, how everyone got together and worked so hard to save the clubhouse and the details with the flags and everything
I personally LOVED Only Yesterday,it tackled childhood incense with such fluidity. As an asian, seeing how Teako's family was so distant, it really made me think, "Yeah, Japanese nuclear families" It's natural, Jello, natural.
*innocence but yeah Only Yesterday is pretty underrated imo, Way better than Jello described it being I’d give it a 6/10 or 7/10 idk which one, Good but not essential, But you’re probably gonna like it if you watch it It’s definitely better than Pom Pokko lol
Tales from earth sea and mononoke are both good, but earth sea just doesn't make sense no matter how many times you watch it. Mononokes characters are irritatingly dumb. They always make the obvious wrong move. They both good tho.
-Spirited Away -Laputa Castle In The Sky -The Secret World Of Arrietty -Whisper Of The Heart -Kiki's Delivery Service -From Up On Poppy Hill -Princess Mononoke -My Neighbor Totoro -Ponyo
Ponyo! Ponyo! Ponyo fishy in the Sea! tiny little fishy, who could you really be? This movie was my whole childhood! I watched it like 900,000,000 times!
I loved this movie so much when I was really young, recently my entire family watched a movie that made me start to remember something. My memories of the movie were faint but I finally remembered the name. We bought the movie and watched it. I was so happy when I was watching it cause it was a major part of my childhood,I almost cried.
Ponyo was my first Ghibli movie, so it holds a rly special place in my heart as my favorite Ghibli movie. *BUT*.... Spirited away is a great choice for the number one slot. I love that movie a whole lot.
Did he just gave Grave of the fireflies a 7?? one of the greatest ( and the absolute saddest ) war movies ever made That movie is compared to schindler's list,
Completely with you on ‘Princess Mononoke’ - I absolutely loved how that film treated both the side of the forest and the metalworkers in a such a nuanced and multifaceted way. No bad guys; just different folks with different people and things to protect. Just like real life. I must say, I was surprised to see ‘The Red Turtle’ so far down the list. That film shook me in ways I can’t really put into words. I’m not the most stoic, manly man in the world but even so it’s rare for a film to leave me crying for hours on end after watching it, and even rarer for a film to leave me lying awake at night thinking it over. I thought the stroke of genius here was in the simplicity and ambiguity of how the story was told, so you can paint yourself onto the story. It was a film that that I knew from the first time watching it would never, ever leave me; beautiful, and heart-wrenching, and well within my all-time top 10 favorite films.
Me explaining some reactions to Ghibli films badly: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars TFA meets the Age of Strife from Warhammer 40k. Porco Rosso - You will end this movie with a "wait it just ended?" but then have a craving for anything made out of tomatoes and olive oil and can only listen to Italian music. Princess Mononoke - This is the Zelda game you will never have. Kiki's Delivery Service - You can finally make one of the world's cheapest cosplay second to the "I am Gundam" cosplay from 2007. Grave of the Fireflies - You finally accept that Ghibli is not like the kiddy friendly Disney. The Cat Returns - As a kid, you thought it was cute. As an adult, you may question yourself if you have just initated a fetish for furry transformation. Castle in the Sky - This is literally just Star Wars: A New Hope but...steampunk...I guess? My Neighbour Totoro - In the Japanese audio, you think Mei is adorable. In the English Dub, will you even consider having kids if they would scream alot and have the big brain power of a fruit fly like Disney Mei? Ponyo - Finding Nemo is overrated. Spirited Away - Japanese Acid When Marnie was there - You will never look at your Grandma the same way again. The Tale of Princess Kaguya - a.) You will either think that Kaguya's parents never deserved her and it was completely justified that mah boi Buddha took her or b.) (like me) you completely hate Buddha and his moon posse and will always explain the ending as "Kaguya kidnapped by mufuking Buddha" and you will continue your eternal hate for Buddha until Ghibli decides to do sequels with fanservice. Tales from Earthsea - Gandalf vs ASMR Willem Defoe while Frodo has an existential crisis and facial muscle disability and I guess there are also dragons. Secret World of Arriety - Little Tom Holland has a small people fetish.
Franken Waifu this is great! I honestly never thought of mononoke like that, and I want a Zelda game like that now. I also agree on princess kaguya, I was so pissed when it ended with her being taken away.
Actually, Nausicäa was influenced very much by Dune (the book). The book also inspired Star Wars, so it makes sense that you put the movie there. I love all three (Dune, Star Wars, and Nausicäa, by the way.)
Idk, but I felt like “When Marnie Was There” was more gayish than Ocean Waves. I mean, yeah, Marnie turned out to be Anna’s Grandma, with Anna taking the role of her Grandfather, but still. That rowing scene was absolutely gay.
@@rattatouilletherat the interesting thing about this is you can potentially read the "gay" vibes between Marnie and Anna as parental, such as how Marnie teaches and holds Anna while rowing. For someone unfamiliar it could look like childhood crush, but on rewatch it could look like parental guidance. Them two dancing is another example of how it could look more parental than love depending on how you choose to read it. These scenes are shot in such a way that both interpretations feel valid, or at least I think so. I will say, however, that Ocean Waves feels like an unapologetically gay movie. It's fantastic, especially considering it was likely accidental lol. I definitely feel like this was the more gay movie of the two, but that's just me. I understand why people wouldn't like Ocean Waves, since it's arguably a pretty boring movie, but the subtext is what makes the movie, at least for me. Analysing the gay themes is really interesting.
@@AshuriAikawa Your interpretation is more serious and makes more sense than this initial one I had. I suppose the line between “crush” and maternal figure was blurred in this movie, and to good effect.
I genuinely think it's a brilliant movie, one of my favourites but that is definitely personal, I'd say it's more 'eh' as a piece of filmography - it was more gritty and realistic though in some forms which is why I love it so much!
Surprisingly I loved Only Yesterday. I feel like related to a lot of it. I enjoyed the nostalgic parts as well as the simple easy going parts of her adult life. But I understand how people can be turned off by it. Very interesting to see you view :)
Agreed. I saw it as a story of introspection and self discovery over a specific critique of Japanese modernization like Pom Poko. The story's themes are woven in well between the two time periods and there are certain liberties allowed because of the animation format that you can't do in live action. I personally find it odd that people are put off by "uncanny" moments in film like "talking for eight minutes" when we all do this. I suppose when you're made aware of it, it's a bit jarring to some but we all have mundane moments and there can be growth in that.
Japanese culture. Best friends are way more touchy-feely than Western best friends. That's why they're always clinging to each other. I'm sure the "I love you"s are supposed to come off as familial love.
I personally loved "When Marnie Was There" because it combined a good mixture of character emotion along with an amazing storyline, and I greatly encourage people to watch it if they want that pure ghibli feeling.
Fun fact! Reiko Yoshida (the writer of The Cat Returns) also wrote the manga Tokyo Mew Mew, and got one of the movies she did the screenplay for the stamp of approval from the Dalai Lama.
Whisper Of The Heart is a movie I truly feel is too underrated. It is absolutely without question a slice of life movie, and it is rather slow. But I don't mind that, as the visuals are positively stunning of 90's Japan. The story is very relatable to me, as someone who didn't really get amazing grades, didn't like school, and wanted to do something. The idea of trying your hardest to do what you want to do in life, that it is not easy but hard work, and that you'll suffer on the road to success is a really important one for people with little direction like myself. If anything, I need to rewatch the movie to remember the importance of focus in life, to find direction and create meaning. It's a great story for those who have hobbies or ambitions in things that can get caught in ruts, or for those who know what they want to do but hear all the people saying not to pursue it. To take the leap of faith, but commit to it wholeheartedly in the rough patches. Love the movie. Also loved From Up On Poppy Hill. Howl's Moving Castle is a blast, but read the book after you watch the movie then come back. It both makes the book better for Ghibli's visuals in your mind but also the movie better as you'll understand where the movie wanted to go but didn't. The movie is still a fever dream, and I prefer the book in general. Now excuse me, I'm gonna get ready to Merry Go Round Of Life.
There's a starman waiting in the sky Man if this video had come out 3 days ago id be with you. But i just saw cagliostro for the first time and fell in love. Still a fantastic movie tho
"Earthsea is in crisis, but the people of the land are so catty and bitter about everything you just don't want them to be saved" that's not Earthsea, that's totally France
I love The Tale of Princess Kaguya. It's so underrated and was even nominated for best animated film but I feel like not a lot of people have seen it. For those who are curious: the movie is based on a legend called 'the tale of the bamboo cutter' and focuses on home as a theme. It's super good and I highly, highly recommend it.
I have read the tale that the movie is based off of, but I haven't watched this movie yet, I was considering it. I haven't watched any anime in a long time so maybe now's a good time
I totally agree there. I always end up having to pirate Ghibli films, but I couldn't find that one. I bought the DVD at Barnes and Noble, and I ended up watching it with my older stepsister. It's one of our favourite films now. The pacing is pretty off putting to some people though.
I loved The Tale of Princess Kaguya! I love the artstyle and the traditional features. What pisses me off the most is- -SPOILER WARNING Do NOT READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SPOILED- the music at the end. Don't get me wrong, the ending is bound to happen. BUT IT IS SUCH A SAD MOMENT FOR THOSE CHARACTERS AND YOU JUST HEAR THE HAPPIEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD WHILE THOSE PARENTS ARE THEIR EYES OUT.
My favourites are definitely whisper of the heart, when marnie was there, and spirited away. A lot of people haven’t seen whisper of the heart and when Marnie was there and I really wish people would appreciate it more
I actually really like "when Marnie was there" it deals with self love struggles due to the fact that Anna learned at a kinda young age that her parents are paid for her (which especially to a young girl like Anna that seems to struggle with accepting her asthma as a part of her) is something that could really affect her mental health. The first time she actually feels unconditional love is when she meets Marnie, of course Anna would try to hold on to that at all costs. And to be honest, Anna not at all talking about the feelings she has about the money her parents get but instead directing her feelings outwards in a sometimes rude way is something every teenager does at one point. The character arc is well written and the overall portrayal of Anna is very realistic.
Grave Of The Fireflies is the only Takahata film I can sit through. I wouldn't argue with watching shorts of My Neighbours The Yamadas separately, but it's not worth being called a film.
I realy liked only yesterday. I especialy remeber the scene with the girls getting theyr period. And I remembered how shameful it was for us girls in school. how we did not talk aboutit loudly and were embarassed when we could not participate swim class and a boy asked why. I had not thought about that for years and the movie pictured it very well, also how it is very different for every girl. And I liked the scene with the pinaple, as the young girl thinks she has to be brave and eats the pinapple yet she clearly suffers while eating it, but she is so ditermened, even the mom says she does not have to eat it. It is something I see in a lot of women and girls: willingly suffering for some cause. I am a person who takes things slow and I was a melancholic shy and quiet child so I could identify with this and liked the slow pace and calmness of the movie. I also liked the smaltalk in the car as it felt quite real and close to what you would talk about with someone you don t know that well. I don t like when every dialogue is set out to mean something important. I like movies about every day life, which often is not very spectacular.
Same here. I'm kind of a sucker for down-to-earth films like this, so this really clicked for me. I've seen better slice-of-life anime films, sure, but this was charming enough.
I think there should be more movies like this, but they should have a warning stating 'this movie is meant to be realistic, not entertaining.' Not to say the movie isn't entertaining(I've never seen it), just that entertainment isn't the point.
Can you do every barbie movie reviewed in 10 words or less. Like ik barbie probably isnt what you want to watch or maybe you haven't seen any before. But barbie movies are so special. They are so beautiful and well made considering its barbie, the stories of most of them are lovely ans they teach morals in such a great way. Just a suggestion because they are much better than they look and i want to know your opinion on them because your great and ye x
Chibi Lydia, I want him to do Barbie too, mainly because I'm genuinely interested to see someone trying to review and rank all of them without having the previous childhood nostalgia.
Omg yesss, I only had 3 of them growing up (swan lake, rapunzel and princess and the pauper) but I’ve watched them at least 20 times each before I got to my “girly things are STUPID” phase, they’re so pure!!
I'm a little embarrassed to admit that as a child my sister and I would sing "I Am A Girl Like You" from The Princess and The Pauper constantly. We would even dance like how Annaliese and Erika did during that song!
Objectivity is more or less non existent when it comes to reviewing movies. Everything you enjoy is based upon your prior experiences, your cultural surroundings, your subjective intiviudakity, etc. People who talk objectively in movies and or music are missing the point, taste in movies is *subjective* . Good video but I felt it needed to talk about that point you made.
Well, we can all recognize that certain movies are masterpiece, or at the least technically well made, because they exhibit certain qualities and in such a way that we can't ignore. Obviously there's personal taste, but it would be pretty absurd to say that Spirited Away is badly animated, or conversely that My Neighbor Totoro has a complex plot. What I want to say its that there's always a degree of objectivity in a well-made review, because movies use a language with which the director expresses its ideas. A set of standard rules that indicates how to narrate a story and how to make a shot look more intense. Those rules can be broken but first it would be useful to know them. There are then various opinions of what consists a good plot or a good scene, but I think it's great that we can discuss about these various parameters and motivate our opinions, so that we can have a more meaningful discussion than "well it's just your taste". Same for music, which is more of my field.
I just rewatched Howl’s moving Castle for like the fifth time and I still pretty much cried when I saw him. He’s just too beautiful and pretty and I’m like SWOON! NOSEBLEED! INSANE FANGIRL! . . Same goes for Haku and the Baron from the Cat returns. Like WHY- . . Expect demonic screeching every time I watch Spirited Away. I’m just like DO THEY EVER MEET AGAIN- WHAT- NO! THAT CAN’T BE IT-
Fun fact: my neighbor Totoro and grave of the fireflies were originally released in theatres as a double feature. They had to swap places after people got too traumatized from gotff to stay for Totoro. Hence the joke about the tour.
I was not a fan of Ponyo either. It had some interesting scenes, like when it was raining really hard and they were all separated. Overall, though, it was just really dull and leaned way too heavily on "aww isn't Ponyo just the cutest" which she isn't, and even if she was, it wouldn't be enough to drive the whole film.
Ponyo was the first Ghibli movie I saw that made me think "Maybe I DON'T need to collect all the Ghibli movies after all." It wasn't terrible, it just didn't make me go "wow, I can't wait to watch that again!" like the other movies.
They’re all the best, except for Earwig and the Witch (Earwig isn’t even bad because of the writing, it’s just the animation. CGI and Ghibli do not mix that well… yet.)
I've just re-discovered your channel. It seems you have moved away from these countdowns, which saddens me but man alive I love these videos. I've re-watched them all again tonight and they make me smile all the way through.
Honestly I’d have to say that “Grave of the Fireflies” is my favorite. I watched it with my two friends, and at the end I was bawling my eyes out. I get that it’s children dying for 2 hours, but I really loved the movie and how Setia loved and cared for his little sister. I honestly wouldn’t have cried if I hadn’t compared me and my little sister to them. I just thought “What would I do in this situation? How would I care for my sister? How would we survive?” And I believe that’s what got me the most when I watched the movie.
Grave of the Fireflies made me cry. I wouldn't say it's my fave Ghibli film, and there is a definite shift on tone from Miyazaki's films, but it was a good film I'd watch again. Not as much as Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro or Princess Mononoke etc but every so often when I haven't watched it for a while I'll grab the popcorn and the tissues and go for it.
Same tbh. I think those of us who have younger siblings can relate on a much more personal level about that movie. I cried so freaking much because I could FEEL the emotions and despair of the main character, and I couldn't imagine myself in that situation, it affected me a lot ^^"
Yeah same I have a kid sister (well she's not a kid anymore but there's a 10+ year gap between us) and the film really resonated with me and is probably why I cried half as much as I did at the end.
I felt regret while watching the movie because I know what would happen to them and when it did happen... wow I didnt expect to hit me so hard. I loved the movie and I could relate to the main character much (because I have to take care of 2 siblings and 4 cousins) and
Nate If you love the songs in when marnie was there, I would suggest that you listen to pricilla ahn album just know that I love you. Some of the songs in that album are from when marnie was there.
It wasn't my favorite Studio G movie, but I really enjoyed it. It was long and a bit slow, but it wasn't meant to be fast-paced and full of exciting action. Beautiful movie, I think. :)
Ponyo was the first ghibli movie I watched and it might just be nostalgia talking, but that movie AMAZED me It is mostly responsible for me wanting to work with art these days, it’s just a fucking adorable and astonishingly beautiful movie
My favourites are: - Howl's moving castle - Spirited away - Porco Rosso - Nausicaä - Only yesterday - Princess Mononoke - When Marnie was there - Kiki's delivery service - Tale of princess Kaguya - My neighbour Totoro - Whisper of the heart - Grave of the fireflies - Castle in the sky
@@leannbeltran9833 Some of my favourites have actually changed a little, and I like Kiki a lot more now. I really enjoy the landscapes, Kiki herself and the music. A really good movie.
I have quite the story about "The Cat Returns" movie... Way back from my childhood I remember watching this on tv, but being so young, I never remembered it. A couple months ago, I started getting into Ghibli movies. I watched all of them one by one, the first one being Arrietty. I remember being kind of unsatisfied that that was my first, (dont get me wrong i loved that too, but it lacked impact on me) and watching every other movie. Then i stumbled upon this, the cat returns. The moment I saw the tower in the Kingdom of Cats, I was reminded of everything. How this movie was streamed on television when I was a kid, in the afternoon and drinking juice. And now that I finished this movie, the ending isn't something very spectacular but I cant explain how happy seeing this movie made me. My favorite Ghibli film used to be Howl's, but now I know for sure that it's not. And now I know that after all, Arrietty wasn't my very first Ghibli movie.
When Marnie was there is like... the second best Ghibli movie under Spirited Away IMO. It's honestly so refreshing for a film to tackle subjects as difficult as childhood depression, loneliness and self-loathing and depict them in a way that's both honest and beautiful. As a lonely kid who hated myself as well which in turn caused me to lash out at other people until I learned not to take things for granted it REALLY got to me. I don't exactly disagree with your comment about Anna being a 'bitch' but I don't think that's fair. I mean yeah, I can't see any reason why losing your mother can make you bitter or reserved at all, right? And The Cat Returns is good? Howl's Moving Four Unresolved Sideplots is an 8? I respect your opinion on the majority of films here but, come on now.
@Poison Rationality Remember that girl Anna met early in both versions? The book character is named Sandra. In both versions, Anna calls her a fat pig. However, in the movie, it was in a defensive reaction to the girl making a positive comment on Anna's eyes. She insults Anna in return, but then suggests they just forget about that and enjoy the night, whereas Sandra's treatment of Anna was far worse. Both versions of Anna are awkward and come off as rude because of it, but I understand. If you lose all your family, you probably are scared to get too close to other people, but simultaneously wish you didn't have to be alone.
Yeah I like marnie, it’s not my favourite but I like it. My order is: 1. Howls moving castle 2. The wind rises 3. spirited away 4. Castle in the sky 5. When Marnie was there
2:12 and 3:47 THANK YOU! *”The Cat Returns”* is my personal favorite Ghibli movie. 💖 It totally deserves more attention. I think it is actually very deep if you stop to analyze it. It's wholesome, charming and honestly the only Ghibli movie that made me cry of pure nostalgia. Such a masterpiece! :’)
only yesterday was such a good movie. it hadn’t had a super exciting storyline but in this case i think it perfect that it hasn’t. i really like how while the story goes on the main character remembers parts of her past and her school days and it’s just so calming and sweet. i get that it might not be everyone’s thing but it sure is a sweet and adorable movie, which i very much love.
Jackson DeStefano I really wanted to like those, but they are the only Ghibli movies that actually bored me, an bored me amazingly, I think is due to the slow pace of takahata, but I have to admit, they are really well made films
Everything you said about Only Yesterday makes me want to see it. Not everything needs to be action oriented and slow philosophical movies are my favorite.
It's a really good movie. It's slow, yes, but it entertained me so much with all the little details in it. Also JelloApocalypse is fundamentally wrong about what this movie is about. It's about the difficulty of finding yourself in a not fitting environment and slowly realizing this fact by remembering your childhood. It not the simple "nature and tradition vs modern society"-story of pom poko and kaguya.
If Princess Mononoke is your favorite movie, then put the thing at #1. Sure, Spirited Away is ‘polished’ but if it’s not your favorite, then it’s not your #1
Fitting since not too long ago I wrote a 10000 word dissertation about Ghibli for my bachelor's degree 😍 + also I noticed that Ponyo had the same font as Nemo
You know what? I liked when Marnie was there. It had a great melancholic tone and took a well needed break from the fantasy themes of all the other movies. It wasn't about telling a grand, epic story, it was about capturing the feeling of loneliness and the escapism when exploring the mansion and imagining Marnie's ghost. The main character is a _teenager_ . She's allowed to be bitter and angsty about stupid things because to _her_ (someone who doesn't understand how the world works) her foster mom was getting compensation because she saw her as a burden. It was a good movie 😤
I'm all on porco rosso, there is something about a pig flying a red Italian plain made out of wood and love triangle I haven't seen any movies about planes, and it's really beautiful and wholesome (Also maybe a role plays that the main character is a straight up copy of my father, but whatever) And the Italian athetic fits so nice and I really love these kind of stories, and everything that includes ghibli's pirates is a hundred times better than everything else. And the music HOLY PIG and the moment then porco drops a joke like "if the pig can't fly, it's just a pig" And the whole pig metaphor is just great (At least i suspect it's a metaphor) Because of that one time he said that the best die, and other time he said that the mysterious cloud was hell, and that he turned into a not so good person after war, and and and, it all speaks to me as a metaphor
This _has_ to be a thing! What are your personal favorites? Mine are Pokémon The Movie 3 (a.k.a. Spell of the Unown) and Pokémon Heroes: Latias and Latios.
1.Pokemon the first movie(you know why) 2.Pokemon spell of the unknown(Dan green voicing Entei? yes please! and when he's trying to get past the Unkowns barrier at the end "MOLLY!" favorite part) 3.Pokemon Volcanion and the mechanical marvel (which was surprising to me cause recent Pokemon movies in the last couple years have only been ok in my opinion) 4.Pokemon the rise of Darkrai(Brock's Croagunk poison jabbed Dialga's Draco meteor single handed fav part) and 5.Pokemon Pikachu's vacation(i know this was a short before the actual movie but im just gonna count it because it was that fun)
Tara Franklin lmaoo did you not watch the movie. I agree it wasn’t really an EVIL queen but it was a wizard queen ending a decade old war after getting asked nicly
@@TheHotpotato-bp7mm Did you? Suliman was the court sorceress, she wasn't a queen and she wasn't asked. She saw Justin returned to his human form and said to herself that it was time to "put an end to this idiotic war".
my favorite is Howl's Moving Castle, it's like a perfect fairy tale. it does feel a bit rushed at the end, but it actually ends with "They lived happily ever after" which seems to be lacking in films these days
Fun fact: WW2 veterans were expecting Saving Private Rian to be a silly war movie, but left movie theaters crushed by how reallistically it portrayed the horrors of war. Grave of the Fireflies is Saving Private Rian's animated counterpart.
I'm sad that Howl's moving castle isn't talked about more. It's one of my favorites, but that's only because I read the book it's based on... Book and movie are almost nothing alike by the way.
Jared Poth there are things I absolutely love about the movie, like billy crystal as calcifer, the humor, the color/cinematography, but it was so confusing, the plot meanders and there are too many superfluous characters. Turnip head didn’t have to be in the film (or at least the human he transformed into) as did the mother and the subplot of finding a new husband and ratting her out to witch what’s her name.
The underlying theme of the film is anti-war, and the Turnip Head thing is to show the pointlessness of war. The war was supposedly started because the prince went missing. So when it was revealed he was the scarecrow, it was like “All that fighting and turmoil we went through had absolutely no point”
Also, I thought the plot was actually quite straight forward... but then again, it is my favourite movie ever and I’ve seen it a million times. Not even looking at it for an essay could destroy my love for it!
It's been ages since I saw it, but I remember being pretty unimpressed. My big takeaway was that it felt like a mashup of themes and ideas which Miyazaki had already explored thoroughly in much better previous films.
It doesn't suck, its just his opinion. He literally discussed the difference between subjective and objective opinion in this same video. I'm glad you enjoyed it, be happy you did!
@@alextoschi2242 But he said he really didn't like Ponyo and it got a 7. He said if he was being subjective than Ponyo would have gotten a 3. How does Marnie have enough problems to be considered a "bad" movie - wasting time and being fairly dull? It certainly wasn't the first time I watched it. Or the third.

Commit 100% to illustrating a theme and a mood if you gotta, but it's a high risk film-making strategy since if you DON'T successfully hack the emotions of the audience and make them think you're a genius through the power of nostalgia pineapples... all you're left with is unforgivably boring nothingness.

ok but why is no one talking about The Wind Rises because that movie broke me-
I was literally just thinking this when I saw your comment. The wind rises is my fave Ghibli film out of the ones I've seen.
That movie is SO overlooked that hurts. Not the best ghibli film obviously but that one and the grave of the fireflies are my two fave ghibli films.
@@dekuMusic I actually think The Wind Rises is the best Ghibli film
you need to watch it many times to truly capture all of its meanings so maybe that deters people, but it really is such a good underrated gem

It is definitely a great film. It's a very charming movie
it was very realistic as well, the kids had feelings for each other and even when they found out they weren't siblings they didn't get together and i feel like in most movies they would but it's nice bc irl most people would not want to be in relationship with someone who might have been yer brother yk
Yess, I love From up on poppy hill, I love the colors and the magic of the clubhouse. I mean, it's so positive considering that it is a "real life" based film, I loved the plot, how everyone got together and worked so hard to save the clubhouse and the details with the flags and everything
A lovely movie, I really enjoyed it
Truly underrated.
I personally LOVED Only Yesterday,it tackled childhood incense with such fluidity. As an asian, seeing how Teako's family was so distant, it really made me think, "Yeah, Japanese nuclear families"
It's natural, Jello, natural.
*innocence but yeah Only Yesterday is pretty underrated imo, Way better than Jello described it being
I’d give it a 6/10 or 7/10 idk which one, Good but not essential, But you’re probably gonna like it if you watch it

"No bad guys" *Emperor Hasano intensifies*
xD
Mononoke's my favorite movie ever too dude c':
Me explaining some reactions to Ghibli films badly:
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars TFA meets the Age of Strife from Warhammer 40k.
Spirited Away - Japanese Acid
When Marnie was there - You will never look at your Grandma the same way again.
The Tale of Princess Kaguya - a.) You will either think that Kaguya's parents never deserved her and it was completely justified that mah boi Buddha took her or
b.) (like me) you completely hate Buddha and his moon posse and will always explain the ending as "Kaguya kidnapped by mufuking Buddha" and you will continue your eternal hate for Buddha until Ghibli decides to do sequels with fanservice.
Franken Waifu lmfaoooo this genuinely made me laugh
*This is the kind of stuff I signed up for*
Ahh I love me some good Japanese acid🤣
Actually, Nausicäa was influenced very much by Dune (the book). The book also inspired Star Wars, so it makes sense that you put the movie there. I love all three (Dune, Star Wars, and Nausicäa, by the way.)
Ocean Waves: Your high-school crush is actually your male best friend.

Yeah if it wasn't for that movie I would've never gotten into the studio in the first place. The same goes for when marnie was there.
Its one of my favorite Ghibli movies! Its just refreshing and charming. I love putting it on as a nice background movie while I work.

I personally loved "When Marnie Was There" because it combined a good mixture of character emotion along with an amazing storyline, and I greatly encourage people to watch it if they want that pure ghibli feeling.

You absolute madman. I love it.
Watched it. Think its cool. Not the best.

Every MCU movie reviewed in 10 words or less would be a good one
I actually really like "when Marnie was there"
it deals with self love struggles due to the fact that Anna learned at a kinda young age that her parents are paid for her (which especially to a young girl like Anna that seems to struggle with accepting her asthma as a part of her) is something that could really affect her mental health.
Eh I dunno. The reasoning is so base and nothing and it's made out to be such a big deal it makes it look like an asshole

I can totally relate!^^ I love the movie. And I also remember the period scene the most. xD

For The Cat Returns i expected you to say:Huh here's the fanfiction, since its kinda like a sequel
I-I loved When Marnie was There... D:
Hahn Deathspark me too still do!
Its one of my favorit ghibli movies and just-in-generel movies!!
Same here, you're not alone!
I cried to that movie, AFTER IT was done!
I'm so with you on that! I ADORED when Marnie was There!!! So many feels!!!
Someone else that enjoyed the Cat Returns!!!! I feel like that one is underrated, it’s really cute and fun!
It's my favorite Ghibli film so far.
Only Yesterday is one of my favourite films ❤ I'm sad you don't like it but I guess it's not for everyone 😢
I know, a 2!?
Yeah I definitely love that movie ❤
Its not that he doesn't like it, its that the movie is fucking bad
>Grave of fireflies gets a 7.
-Nani?!?!?!
It is a cheap tear jerker. Deal with it.
makosensei 999 Who pissed in your Cheerios this morning
(scoffs)
Yes, because I eat Cheerios for breakfast. XD
makosensei 999 I think you missed the joke bud.
he said on twitter the bad dub gives it a 7 but the sub is a 9
WHEN MARNIE WAS THERE IS AMAAAAZING DUDE
I just rewatched Howl’s moving Castle for like the fifth time and I still pretty much cried when I saw him. He’s just too beautiful and pretty and I’m like SWOON! NOSEBLEED! INSANE FANGIRL!
.
.
Same goes for Haku and the Baron from the Cat returns. Like WHY-
.
.
Expect demonic screeching every time I watch Spirited Away. I’m just like DO THEY EVER MEET AGAIN- WHAT- NO! THAT CAN’T BE IT-
Wtf
......jiro from the wind rises
......jiro from the wind rises
basically his voice in the english dub is so 🥺🥺🥺
I'm just gonna post another wtf, but thats for the three new replies.
Grave of the Fireflies had me crying for 4 hours straight.
Same
made my mom cry and she isnt invested into animated films
Fun fact: my neighbor Totoro and grave of the fireflies were originally released in theatres as a double feature. They had to swap places after people got too traumatized from gotff to stay for Totoro. Hence the joke about the tour.
You... Don't... Like... Ponyo.... ?
ReeeeeEEEEEE DIFFERENT OPINION unsubbed disliked reported!
JK of course. Great list!
It's one of my least favorites too, like, Ponyo is not a bad movie, but Ghibli has SO MANY BETTER ONES
I adore ponyo so that was a definite #1 on my top 10 anime betrayals.
Ponyo was the first Ghibli movie I saw that made me think "Maybe I DON'T need to collect all the Ghibli movies after all."
It wasn't terrible, it just didn't make me go "wow, I can't wait to watch that again!" like the other movies.
Ponyo was my childhood
When Marnie was there, is one of my favorites🥺
I love when Marnie was there! I think it's such a beautiful film with a gorgeous story.
My favorite Stufio Ghibli movies:
1- When Marnie was there
2- Porco Rosso
3- Spirited Away
4- Kiki’s delivery service
5- Princess Mononoke
When marnie was there is the best!
@Mycroft Lee well it’s not MY favorite but it still kills it 🔥
They’re all the best, except for Earwig and the Witch (Earwig isn’t even bad because of the writing, it’s just the animation. CGI and Ghibli do not mix that well… yet.)
Faves:
3. My Neighbor Totoro
2. Spirited Away
1.PRINCESS MONONOKE
I loved the movie and I could relate to the main character much (because I have to take care of 2 siblings and 4 cousins) and
Elijah Richards tbh it’s the only one i’ve watched and i vaguely remember it
Spirited Away will reign forever!
Anita Hailey damn straight
Anita Hailey hell yeah
I truly didn’t enjoy it at all, watching reviews of it is a weird experience
Yaaass
FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
That rating for "When Marnie Was There" crushed my soul. I've never disagreed with you this much on one of your ratings before lol.
Timmah omg same. Marnie was gorgeous
I'm with you. The ending, particularly paired with the outro song, made me cry.
Marnie was such a beautiful and impactful film, I'm glad somebody agrees with me
Nate If you love the songs in when marnie was there, I would suggest that you listen to pricilla ahn album just know that I love you. Some of the songs in that album are from when marnie was there.
yeah i think he missed the point of the story or certain details of the plot.
I’m shocked. The secret world of Arriety is one of my favorite books/movies.
awwww the little totoro rating sticker has blush and a little smile when he compliments my neighbor totoro
only yesterday is one of my favourites..
It wasn't my favorite Studio G movie, but I really enjoyed it. It was long and a bit slow, but it wasn't meant to be fast-paced and full of exciting action. Beautiful movie, I think. :)
taro Then you have bad taste
Or just different preferences and opinions :)
@@One-eq7bg I like Only Yesterday, but i also like Citizen Kane. So your point is ?
Lamborghini Cars u didn’t understand the meaning of the movie lmao
Ponyo was the first ghibli movie I watched and it might just be nostalgia talking, but that movie AMAZED me
It is mostly responsible for me wanting to work with art these days, it’s just a fucking adorable and astonishingly beautiful movie
Possum sameeee it brought me into ghibili movies it’s probably my second favourite after spirited away
My favourites are:
- Howl's moving castle
- Spirited away
- Porco Rosso
- Nausicaä
- Only yesterday
- Princess Mononoke
- When Marnie was there
- Kiki's delivery service
- Tale of princess Kaguya
- My neighbour Totoro
- Whisper of the heart
- Grave of the fireflies
- Castle in the sky
No one ever says kiki 💀💀
@@leannbeltran9833 love kiki 💓
@@leannbeltran9833 its a great movie but for me a not as fantastical and interesting as say howls moving castle, spirited away and laputa
My favorite is The Wind Rises. Apparently i don’t share that opinion with anyone
The Cat Returns review: AWWWWW! THEY'RE SO CUTE!!!
I haven't seen any comments about his cute doodles, they're so cute!
My *GIRLFRIEND* is my *DEAD GHOST GRANDMA??!*
I think that movie Anna seems like an angel compared to book Anna. She at least tries to be respectful.
Adore the movie. :)
The Cat Returns is unexpectedly good, but not top three. And neither is Pom Poko, holy shit.
I think I need to go watch Marnie now.
My order is:
1. Howls moving castle
2. The wind rises
3. spirited away
4. Castle in the sky
5. When Marnie was there
Porcco Rosso was so good, I watched it so many damn times.
Oh... I likes when marnie was there...
Same! Its a beautiful movie.
Same but I agree with his opinion on Anna she could have been way better in the begining
only yesterday was such a good movie. it hadn’t had a super exciting storyline but in this case i think it perfect that it hasn’t. i really like how while the story goes on the main character remembers parts of her past and her school days and it’s just so calming and sweet. i get that it might not be everyone’s thing but it sure is a sweet and adorable movie, which i very much love.
My two favorite ghibli movies are When Marnie Was There and Only Yesterday..........
Jackson DeStefano I really wanted to like those, but they are the only Ghibli movies that actually bored me, an bored me amazingly, I think is due to the slow pace of takahata, but I have to admit, they are really well made films
I thought Marnie was okay, OY is one of my favourites though
Sorry to break the news, but you may just be a boring person xD
Rip
I guess you just have bad taste then.....
Jk I love varying opinions XD
Everything you said about Only Yesterday makes me want to see it. Not everything needs to be action oriented and slow philosophical movies are my favorite.
Isaiah Gilliland I agree. Though the ending left me a bit confused. Perhaps I'll rewatch it someday.
wut
the ending was perfect i think you need to watch it again
the movie is fantastic and I don't even like 'slice of life' in general because most of it is the lame 'cute girls doing cute girls' variety
I thought it was boring. I guess I'm more of an action person.
If Princess Mononoke is your favorite movie, then put the thing at #1. Sure, Spirited Away is ‘polished’ but if it’s not your favorite, then it’s not your #1
ONLY YESTERDAY WAS AN AESTHETIC MASTERPIECE TAKE IT BACK
The fact that the cat returns is in your top three makes me love you!!!!!!!!
Fitting since not too long ago I wrote a 10000 word dissertation about Ghibli for my bachelor's degree 😍 + also I noticed that Ponyo had the same font as Nemo
Ranuyasha daaaaaaang that’s amazing! How long did that take to do?
Sum Person He did.
ThoughtsOfALeo It took me a couple months 😊 and a half
ThoughtsOfALeo I can send it to you if you have the time and if you are interested
Obligatory *HAM!* comment.
2:32 “You could land a plane on that nose”
IM WHEEZING
same😂
Ponyo is The Little Mermaid but an anime
That's the point
How did I never make the connection
I'm all on porco rosso, there is something about a pig flying a red Italian plain made out of wood and love triangle
I haven't seen any movies about planes, and it's really beautiful and wholesome
(Also maybe a role plays that the main character is a straight up copy of my father, but whatever)
And the Italian athetic fits so nice and I really love these kind of stories, and everything that includes ghibli's pirates is a hundred times better than everything else.
And the music HOLY PIG
and the moment then porco drops a joke like "if the pig can't fly, it's just a pig"
And the whole pig metaphor is just great
(At least i suspect it's a metaphor)
Because of that one time he said that the best die, and other time he said that the mysterious cloud was hell, and that he turned into a not so good person after war, and and and, it all speaks to me as a metaphor
ok im just gonna say it:every pokemon movie reviewed in 10 words or less!
BlacKing500 we need this
This _has_ to be a thing! What are your personal favorites? Mine are Pokémon The Movie 3 (a.k.a. Spell of the Unown) and Pokémon Heroes: Latias and Latios.
1.Pokemon the first movie(you know why)
2.Pokemon spell of the unknown(Dan green voicing Entei? yes please! and when he's trying to get past the Unkowns barrier at the end "MOLLY!" favorite part)
3.Pokemon Volcanion and the mechanical marvel (which was surprising to me cause recent Pokemon movies in the last couple years have only been ok in my opinion)
4.Pokemon the rise of Darkrai(Brock's Croagunk poison jabbed Dialga's Draco meteor single handed fav part)
and 5.Pokemon Pikachu's vacation(i know this was a short before the actual movie but im just gonna count it because it was that fun)
Bria Nonya agreed we must all spread the good word so that JelloApocalypse will one day do it hopefully
Heroes is best, as well as Darkrai and Arceus. I guess Keldeo is ironic enjoyment? Probably nostalgia
Howl's Moving Castle is a fever dream you don't want to end.
And then ends very abruptly
@CrazyMiles what
@CrazyMiles what
All ghiblis films are glorofied fever dreams tbh
@Miles Doyle no
Howl's Moving Castle:
"Evil queen ends decades-old war when asked nicely."
PainCausingSamurai ye but it’s lit
How is this the plot. There was no evil queen, no one was asked, and it wasn't decades old.
Tara Franklin I get your point but she was convinced mostly by howl
I dunno, I quite enjoy Children Slowly Dying for Two Hours. It’s a beautifully tragic film and it does wonders for unclogging my sinuses.
And making oneself feel like a wreck in the next morning
b0n34ip1ant No, I feel fine in the morning. I’m pretty jaded though.
@@MislaidAlbum Oh alright. good for you
MislaidAlbum I thought that was Grave of the Fireflies
MislaidAlbum It’s a brilliant film that tackles a very big overlooked theme in society that people might not have thought about.
I have one phrase to summarize Ghibli films.
"It just works"
It just works
Justin Y. Hello there
Justin Y. Lol yes
Its a good phrase.
Omg go away, your on every fucking video
Leave, your presence perturbs me
my favorite is Howl's Moving Castle, it's like a perfect fairy tale. it does feel a bit rushed at the end, but it actually ends with "They lived happily ever after" which seems to be lacking in films these days
GoddessOfWhim2003 it feels like a fever dream
Yeah, but the plot is completely screwed with.
I agree with youuu uwu
In the Book at the end he does ask her if she wants to live happily ever after jokingly
Watch this. ua-cam.com/video/ug1MfEcBLWs/v-deo.html it explaines why the end isn't rushed
Fun fact: WW2 veterans were expecting Saving Private Rian to be a silly war movie, but left movie theaters crushed by how reallistically it portrayed the horrors of war.
Grave of the Fireflies is Saving Private Rian's animated counterpart.
“Ryan”
Geez...
@@IceIsRick no no, the americans screw up a bunch of names from different languages, they deserve a bit of payback
My big takeaway was that it felt like a mashup of themes and ideas which Miyazaki had already explored thoroughly in much better previous films.
yo i loved that movie and it quickly became my fav ghibli, mostly cause of the characters themselves, so do you think i'd like the book too?
You know Spirited Away is more of a fever dream than Howl’s Moving Castle right?
Edit: It's still a beautiful film though
Agreed
I watched spirited away at 1am and had to watch it again to check that I didn't just dream the whole thing
Yup
I have childhood trauma of the parent-pig transformation
ikr like out of NOWHERE a protagonist turns into a dragon like wtf
My GIRLFRIEND is my DEAD GHOST GRANDMA?! *I choked*

What also sucks is that it got a 4 and it's one of my favorite Ghibli movies. 😭
It doesn't suck, its just his opinion. He literally discussed the difference between subjective and objective opinion in this same video. I'm glad you enjoyed it, be happy you did!
Perfect clickbait title
@@alextoschi2242 But he said he really didn't like Ponyo and it got a 7. He said if he was being subjective than Ponyo would have gotten a 3. How does Marnie have enough problems to be considered a "bad" movie - wasting time and being fairly dull? It certainly wasn't the first time I watched it. Or the third.
