Trains in the Water - CP Trains Plow Through the Flooded Mississippi Waters! - October 2018

- 10/13/2018 - It's high waters on the high iron!
Due to excessive heavy rains the past few weeks, the Mississippi River rose significantly, causing some pretty hefty flooding. Of course, this included the Davenport, Iowa riverfront, and along with it, the Canadian Pacific Davenport Sub. Over 1,000 feet of the mainline was completely submerged.
This didn't stop CP trains from powering through it.
At just more than a walking pace, 3 Canadian Pacific freight trains pushed through the floodwaters, creating an absolutely surreal sight to see. More info below the time-stamps*!
Please enjoy!

*The trains that came through today had to be issued clearance from a track foreman before entering the water. Typically, the foremen would check the depth of the water before each train and then issue clearance along with the special orders for crossing the water. I believe the rule is trains can't cross with head-end power if the water is deeper than 18 inches. As deep as it looks in this video, I guess it wasn't breaking that threshold. Each train was instructed to cross at no more than 3 mph. On top of that, after any engines were completely through and out of the water, they were to stop and Idle in Notch 4 for 10 minutes to heat and dry the traction motors which are AC electrically powered. As dangerous as this maneuver could look to the common eye, rest assured, it was very well coordinated as was done and safely as railroading gets!

True
the only way the motors didnt burn out is because of that plow

keep 'em coming!! nicely done!!
These beautiful machines moved the world forward with such presence and character. It’s really special to see this. My hats off to the amazing camera crew who matched pace flawlessly too. Bravo!
Yep, plowing through versus cautiously going through is enormous. My Dad was an engineer with Erie Lackawanna for 40 years and said during flood conditions, you creep the train through. Otherwise, he said the cars behind the engines can hydroplane and derail. Didn’t think with that much weight it could happen....didn’t ask because Dad knew his stuff...God bless him, he passed away 5 years ago
Your dad was correct, cars directly behind locomotives do not have their full weight imposed onto the rails because of drawbar/coupling tension when the locomotives are exerting power.
The awesome power of water. Don't underestimate it.
Sometimes trains are called "the ship on the ground", because they can transport so many materials at once.
What the hell!! This train goes on the water!!! This is truly "the ship on the ground"!!
Has no one noticed the incredible sounds in this??? The diesel chugging, the cars stretching and shrieking through the water. Just awesome!!!
First time hearing a train I take it
Sitting on the dock of the bay...watching the Trains roll away... Nice footage and very impressive. Great undercarriage cleansing. Thanks for sharing. GOD BLESS the flood victims this season, keep them in our prayers.
i have to admit... i was watching the dogs play more than the train and had to watch a second time...
am i the only one who finds trains and water oddly satisfying?
Nope

Prime example of how the railroad never stops moving. Mad respect to them.
Cars through flood: CRAP NO WAY IM GOING THROUGH THIS
Trains: eh it’s just a little bit of water
Thomas spoke to the other engines "I want to fish." But they all had the same answer, "Engines don't go fishing." "Silly stick in the muds" said Thomas.
They kept commerce rolling. Great job. Also saw on a virtual rail fan comment line in the Midwest how trains were being diverted around the flooded areas.

Boat: I can float on water

I did not know that the CP Rail went through the southern states! I learn something new everyday!!!
This was in Iowa, by Mississippi he meant the Mississippi River
@@Highclearmedia Well now after the KCS merger they do haha
Little story for you . . Back in the mid-80's, in titchy South Wales, I had to travel 15 miles to work in Cardiff, from a small "Valleys" town to get to work. There was a helluva lot of snow, yet hardly any locals made it, as all the roads were clogged up. Luckily, I got there by train, which ploughed its way through the drifts and I was less than 10 minutes late!! I really really love our railways!!
Canadian Pacific presents: "Train on the water boat on the track"
This was one of the first ever videos i watched on UA-cam and got Me into trains.
I love trains this was fun and soothing.
Who else want the train to go at top speed and see the wave it would create even though it will probably power off
Holy crap I didn’t even notice the likes
Idk chance of derailment? Idk much about trains
That'd be fun even though it'd probably derail.
papbob probably not, it’s a straight track with only a foot of water
Could go a little faster, maybe 25
Me
I have worked a few floods like this as a conductor.
Water can damage the traction motors in the locomotive trucks.....so sometimes we shoved a train through the flood to another set of locomotives on the other side.....locomotives stayed high and dry.
AHOY MATEY !! This is Captain AHAB your train engineer speaking.....Ishmael is the train conductor. We are off to sea with this train.....
CP AC44C6M #8021 was brand new at that moment! gorgeus!
I love the sound of metal creaking and straining...and the wheels on the rail...
Freeze the water over and recreate the polar express
2:00 looks like its gonna be the river express😂😂😂😂
Lol
CP really knows how to make a splash!
The thing I noticed is the last train, so clean and new
Extraordinary! That was definitely the most boring experience I have ever had on youtube. This is definitely an award winner in that respect.
The irony is that Canadian Pacific (CP) used to have a division that owned ships.
Wall innb - in the Centennial Year for Canada (1967). Canadian Pacific started rolling out the “Multi-mark Logo” and all the primary coloured rolling stock. They also had a commercial that aired an year or so later that showed all their holdings - CP Rail, CP Ships, CP Transport, CP Air, CP Hotels. It was quite a stirring melody (or at least to me). I’ve tried to locate it on UA-cam but not been successful.
I live in Vancouver, I remember the orange CP Air jets flying in and out! I had no clue CP went as far south as the Mississippi River, very cool :)
Yep! Cp ships! Empress of Canada! Also CP air also named their planes empress of city name. Miss those days CP air was the best. They even had plans for sst travel for the 1990s and beyond!
Yup. RIP Empress of Ireland.
unklebobosaurus man they go all the way to Mexico
Their is the first time I've seen a train have its very first swimming lesson & they deserve a GOLD 🥇 medal award for best swimming competition, since their the only ones there!! 🥇
That was really an incredible video on a train going across submerged rail track. Good catch.

Um... eww...
@@stevecraig3004 it doesnt only the grain that makes the cereal and that gets cleaned a ton at the factory
I guess it's okay as long as the waters not above the wheel bearings 😮😮
Never seen a train go through water before. Interesting they even went through that mess.
Awesome footage. Everything was under control. Thank you for sharing.
Nobody:

Wow. That thing was really plowing through the water. So exciting. In the meantime, paint is drying somewhere.

This was more of a slow crawl thru the flooded streets, rather than your stated plow through. With a Plow Through...I'm expecting water flying every where, this was more like Grandma is driving the train.
Funny
TRUE!!!
I agree!
It was MISLEADING! :/
Ya...underwhelming

Fantastic video Jacob!!!!
Thanks Joey!!!
Eastern Iowa Rail Productions holy crap dude your profile picture very epic : o
the evil turkey Thanks
Eastern Iowa Rail Productions what is the story behind the pfp shadow is coming up to something but I dont know what it is?? Please help me.
He's pretty much coming up to a tombstone of a Railroad that went into bankruptcy in the mid seventies know as the ROCK and I made a logo similar to The ROCK's logo
Crazy. Here in the UK, they stop the trains if there's 1mm of water on the tracks.
well in america we go all out. we're kinda crazy like that lol
We don’t let a little water stop us over here

Nice video!! I’m impressed at how this was executed
I was curious as to how the train handles a flood and low and behold it's a video of the downtown area of the city I live in haha. Nice!

Nice video! Back in August, there was flooding up near to where I live. Unfortunately, my house wasn't affected by high water!
LOL
absolutely awesome and unprecedented !!
I would like to have seen him drive into that at 60 MPH!
“What do you drive?”
“A RIVER locomotive”
“Don’t you mean a RAILROAD locomotive?”
“NOPE!”
... plz don’t that was cringe.
Awesome video buddy.keep up.I am proud to be a cp employee.thx.
It’s now a troat

Great video. Thank you for sending me your channel. And yes I subscribed since we love trains.
well so much for finding the pennies i put on the track!

i live in rockisland, il. i can't believe to see a video of the quadcities here on youtube. pretty cool.
I'm a Rock Islander too! I believe this was from last year but happened again this year.
When filming a train, always remember to stand clear of its bow wave
Wow, did they plow thought. Spectacular. Shit, I negotiated deeper water on my tricycle when was 5 years old.
Canadian Pacific: WTH WHY IS IT A FLOOD HERE?!?
Canadian Pacific #2: YEAH!

If standing water was on the tracks of GTA V. Train would be like... hahaha!!! Try me! Train
😍 love the sounds of the metal
Congrats on the views! Greetings from Minnesota
Nice catches!
Very cool footage, kind of surreal!
Trains too, walk on water.
Not really
Walk????
Wow! Looks like it's floating. Great video.
wow that is a lot of water over the tracks, good thing i am not the engineer. I would find it hard not going fast through it. and making a big wave
Same dude same!!!
That's what i call SMOOTH SAILIN'!!!!
Noboby:
Me:I wonder what I will watch on youtube today?
UA-cam recommendations: YOU SHOULD WATCH A TRAIN TURN INTO A BOAT IN WATER!!!
also me: Watches video over and over again because I like trains.
Nice video!
Greeting from Britain! 🇬🇧
Just to hear the cars sloshing in the water was worth watching this.
Why is this so satisfying
Workers: Let us go to work slow train!
The trains: *We don't do that here*
Slow and easy and hope that the flood water doesn’t affect the electrics and the traction motors. Fantastic footage.
I've seen video of Indian ( country ) railways coming to a low spot with water covering the rails over a foot deep and they enter the water at near 30 mph with passenger trains mind you. So long as the D.C. Traction motors are closed up properly it won't harm the motors but if it did as soon as the motors dried out they would be fine.
On the old New Haven Railroad at New London, Ct. is was standard operating procedure every morning for the ground relay to trip out until you opened the bypass switch. An hour later you could close the bypass ground relay switch and after everything was warm and dry no more ground relays. We parked the locomotives 5 to 10 feet from the ocean and fog rolled in every night. Pain in the rear end.
I miss the old days oh yeah, power was Alco S1's to S4's Fairbanks Morse H16-44's and Alco RS-11's as well as Alco FA-1 and FA-2 and EMD GP-9's.
I miss the old days.
Cheers!
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing it !
I have never seen anything like that. I used to be a locomotive mechanic and the manual always said under no circumstances should you operate a locomotive where the water touches the bottom of the traction motors. Looks like they got away with it but terrible idea.
Electric traction motors are cooled by air blown from blowers in the cabin through flexible ducts through the motors. That prevents water ingress.
The trouble comes if the locomotive is turned off. When the air stops blowing the water would get inside the motor.
That’s were a steam engine has an advantage the pistons sit higher than the traction motors
oof flood on a train tracks also cool video! My grandmother showed me this
On the last train they added a helper? Note the signal hut's (bungalows) are five feet above the tracks. They knew this is a flood area.
No no no, those were the over nite hotels for the guys out on fishing trips along the tracks.
not a helper . I believe it's a DPU
They call it DPU which mean it was crew less
very courageous and smart on top of that im guess that this was 3.5 to 4 miles long??
Wow you got some awesome footage! thanks for sharing!
You have nice locomotives there because we in Poland are the same ordinary ones, greetings XD
Glad they didn't have anything happen. I would hate walking thru the water to see what's wrong
Absolute epic
At least the wheels are clean!
Yep lol
Until they rust from the water that is
Great video never seen this before
Camera work. 4 thumbs up
those Canadians are very serious and will go through water
22:23 And it just happens to stop with _this_ car right in front of the camera. That'll be a fun one for parents to explain.
this is so awesome, out of all the damn cars its exactly that one and it just stops perfectly
Gumfart. Easy as that. Say the bad guy who did that has sloppy handwriting, and was trying to spell GumFart.

Does 3 mph qualify as "plowing"?
No but the title qualifies as click bait.
Well sure, you don't really move too fast when you plow through snow or water. You take it slow and let the raw power of the engine move the object in the way rather than letting the momentum do it.
ask your parents as they get older their plowing speed drops!
Fermit The Krog well going fast will be better cuz what if the snow if thick and strong then you need speed but water you can go slow just not to fast cuz heck it may be heavy but to fast it could slip off the rails but what you say is kind of true and kind of not just what I think I don't want to make anyone mad just read don't say anything and it won't turn into a argument 😊
@@jasonodoniel6434 going fast makes sense sometimes with light snow and a non rotary snow plow, but if it's heavy and/or you have a rotary snow plow then it's highly suggested you move slow so you don't damage the blade/blades in the front. Odds are the reason the train is moving slow here isn't because it's trying to move the water, but rather becasue the engineer can't see the tracks or any damage and debris that may be on them.
Amazing video, best regards, +
13:57 did you see the door and the water when the coupler slack jolted the train up a(n) MPH?
next load, any road :)
Meh it’ll be fine lol
lol
American Railfan yeah and I think I might have seen a person inside
When i see this all i think of is a Thomas episoide lol
I am amazed that running a train when the tracks are underwater doesn't somehow destabilize the railbed and cause the gravel to displace and the tracks to slip around a little.
got to keep the track crews busy somehow!!
How are trains able to float on water? Amazing!
They weigh the same as a duck
I remember a few years ago I was on Amtrak to New York. Georgia, south and North Carolina were under flood warnings. Train was delayed almost 24 hours because of the strict 30 mph speed limit. Is that mandated trains go that slow in flood warned counties?
Yesterday, I learned the difference between a train and a boat...I wrote this song before that.
Train on the water, boat on a track
Train on the water, boat on a track
My lady took a train across the Atlantic
I hope it don't sink like the Titanic
I went to the station, caught a boat downtown
I hope it don't fall off the track and I drown
Train on the water, boat on a track
Train on the water, boat on a track

Doesn't it strike anyone odd that older GE locomotives used to be called "U Boats"? This is trying to take that nickname a bit too serious!
Just the Universal Series, like the U30C and U50C to name a couple.
so can this be called a "AC motor" ?

Water: I am the most powerful force on earth
Trains: *insert are you sure about that meme*
22:34 mark, loco showing wheel slip due to wet rails. Engineer probably loved that.
Here in Houston during Harvey a up train did something similar and wasn’t so lucky the water washed the track away and the train was laying on its side
And that's probably why this trains slow to not end up on its side if tracks missing
