    Finally, a how to video using layman's terms. Everyone else wants to get all technical and make this a thousand times more difficult than it really is. I tried their way and I still had clatter. Tried this way and just kept going thru until they were tight.

      @@lacidrainl5192 I still had issues. I finally realized I needed to ditch the clapped out roller tip rockers that previous owner installed and replace with factory stamped ones. Also put in the new push rods that came with the kit. All is good now. This channel has given me so much more confidence to get in there and tackle stuff I used to shy away from.

    I’ve been watching Derek for years now and went back and watched all the videos he’s posted and honestly he is my favorite Content Creator. No matter what’s going on in the world or in my life anytime I see a video is posted I watch it. I’m not one for wanting to meet those that I enjoy watching because I know they aren’t the same off camera. But It would be an absolute honor to meet Derek. If you see this Derek I am glad to have been apart of your journey and I believe you deserve everything you have and more. You have worked so hard for it. Congratulations on 1.5 Million and many more to come! 🎉🎉

      Brother I feel exactly the same… this dude is a inspiration, I’ve always wanted a son so that I could have a relationship like Derek has with his boys. But I actually just bought a 74 Squarebody k25 camper special with a 383 stroker and a 700R4 and a custom adapted NP205 transfer case on-er and boy I’ll tell you what…. I took her out front of my suburbian household and gave-er a good ol floggin, popped that sucker in two wheel low and roasted the 35” mud terrains and whelp….. I think I collapsed a few lifters and possibly ruined the cam…. She’s a knockin like a good ol Jehovah’s Witness, so I’m watching this here video to get some tech tips cause I’m about to replace all that junk. Thanks to VGG for being the go to! It's worked every time I've done it and it was taught to be by a old school engine builder. Very cool to see it used by someone else, it definitely brings back memories!

      Thanks for helping out the people that want to do this adjustment on their own, I am one of them, do you think it's necessary to do 90 degrees turn to check for clearance like his doing the adjustment or I am fine by just setting it at TDC set zero lash, then proceed with full turns until is zero lash, then add 3/4 turn, i have a 1997 mercury mountaineer 5.0 L, i want to fix my clattering on the valves, the only thing is that I do not want to open the whole thing just the valve covers, how can I spin the pushrods. Trying this method, please help me out, thanks.

    • @toyshopfab
      @toyshopfab 10 місяців тому

      @LuisMartinez-fr9gq you'll have plenty of room to rotate the push rods by just removing the valve covers. From what I've learned both methods have the same outcome, the way I do it just has fewer steps. Now here's the problem, these methods only work if you have fully adjustable rockers and if I remember correctly, factory ford heads of that year have pedal stool style rockers which mean that they are tightened down and torqued to spec, everything is preset from the factory so double check before attempting any adjustment. I suggest buying a service/ repair manual from your local auto parts store. Now here's another suggestion, if it's a lite chatter you can usually quite it down by using a oil stabilizer like Lucas oil stabilizer (I use it in everything new or high milage) just make sure to follow the directions on the bottle. I hope this helps and remember, don't just take one person's word for it, always do your research and good luck with your repairs.

    The easiest SBC adjustment. Been using that method forever. Works every time. Edit- I was always taught to soak the lifters in oil first. I guess some do it dry. Soaking has always worked for me.

    • @Thirdgen83
      @Thirdgen83 4 роки тому +2

      There is no reason whatsoever to soak lifters. Put some assembly lube on them as you're dropping them in. Adjust the pre-load.
      Prime the oil pump before initial start-up.

      @@tavo24vv27 yes.. its worked great for my 5.8L f150 4x4. Except I followed the ford specs on rocker arm torque specs. Which is 22-ftlbs after finding zero lash on top dead center of each cylinder you're lashing valves on. 2 full rotations will allow you to lash each cylinder in firing order one quarter turn at a time.

      Hello my friend thanks for your explanation. I want to ask you if I can do what you did on your ford 5.8L, I have a 1997 mercury mountaineer 5.0L, I have not open the valve covers yet but I know a mechanic told me that I have a clatting on the heads, I want to take the opportunity to do this myself by listening and reading from people like you, do you think my truck goes by torquing like yours or I just need to set zero lash then 3/4 turn to adjust, please help me out my friend, thanks in advance hope you know more than me about my vehicle. To adjust valves.

      @@LuisMartinez-fr9gq you need to research is the 5.0L for that year Mercury is a roller Cam and Roller lifters before anything. If they are roller then yes you can do it the same way Derek from VGG shows you in the video. Knowing the firing order and going cylinder to cylinder by order will save a lot of time and hassle.

    Yeah my dad taught me this in the mid 90's in front of the local general store, a young neighbor kid showed up and had an engine tick in his old 80s c10, dad said it was an easy fix, pulled the valve covers and did it right there in the parking lot, got him to bump it over with the starter

    We do it the same way. I would mention your method is great for dry pushrods and lifters. My method for both lubed and dry is up and down movement to get to zero lash. If they are lubed and you spin them you can actually depress the lifter. Hydraulic is so forgiving though. that's my 2cents. Great vid.
