On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

The problems that people seem to have forgotten when asking for a matchup!
1) The A-10 is a Jet so it automatically has a speed and vertical advantage despite not having a modern fighter Thrust to Weight Ratio
2) The A-10's mass advantage and 30mm Avenger cannon means that even if the P-51 gets a shot off on the Hog, The A-10 can tank it, The P-51 cannot do the same in return.
If the A-10 got hit with a nuclear weapon and was vaporized, it would just transcend into a plane made of pure energy, and still kill you.
Um. They have the same top speed. Everything else is right though.

One of the well known problems with the A-10 is it's distinctitive lack of two additional wing mounted GAU-8s.
Otherwise known as reverse.
My dad flew hogs in the Maryland ANG. His buddy flew through powerlines and ripped the canopy and half a wing off and still flew back to base.
Crew chief must have been ecstatic when he saw half a wing off an A10

I almost didn't bother watching this one, but now I'm glad I did. The A-10 is such an awesome aircraft! It may not have been designed to dogfight other aircraft, but can you imagine what it could've done in WWII?

Hey GS, how about a WWII senario to see if a single A-10 could be successful on a mission against the Axis like a wing of B-17s might perform. Just to see what it might have been like if the Allies had the A-10 to go against ground targets, while defending itself against Bf 109s, Fw 190s, and the like.
I think the concept would be cool. But one aircraft would never be able to go up against multiple squadrons of enemy fighters lol.

@@TheNbc27 Maybe so, but using tactics and the more consistant power of the A-10s engines I think he'd have a chance. Remember the Axis aircraft have no radar so they have to find him first.

Shades of D Day.
When I read the thumb nail I thought for sure you were fighting against the A10 and wondered if you would even get a kill. I watched an A10 demolish an enemy position on a hill in Afghanistan after the Canadian battery had been firing on it. We took incoming and the Canadians went into action and I was standing behind a row off hesco barriers separating us from the battery and you could see the vapor trails and watch the impact on the hill. It was awesome. Then all the sudden the guns stopped and two A10s rolled in and the first took a run with some air to ground missiles. However the second one came in with the 30 and the explosive dust plume was a lot larger than the missiles. It was like the gun was exploding the hill side. Flipping awesome. That gun when fired is so distinct. I started my training at Ft. Leonard Wood Missouri and there was a practice ground close where the A10 would do runs and on FTX's you would here the MAH sound of that gun out in the distance. Those things are so Flippin cool.
Efficient too.
Which is why the REMFs with stars want to get rid of them.
And replace them with a platform that carries less than a quarter of the Hogs load and can't fly in lightning storms.

I was actually hoping you'd give Toxic your tail just to see how the A-10 held up to the punishment. Great flying regardless but I'd be curious to see what kind of damage 6 50s could do to the flying tank
Not saying that the P51 would do much damage overall, but an engine's an engine, and control surfaces are moving parts. You put enough rounds into either, you're going to tear something off.
If he hasn't yet I want to see a 47 vs the 10. Grandpa vs grandson. Jug vs Hog.
He did that about a year ago. P-47 won 2 rounds, and the A-10 won 2 rounds. One of his few videos where the outcome was a tie.

The GRs did this dogfight a while back and the A-10 lost each time. That might be where all the comments came from.
It is really quite something how the GRs and GS get often wildly different results from aircraft combat comparisons. The GRs are often sort of proudly light on training, so I tend to trust GS, at least when he’s focused (fighting as underdog typically makes him the most focused).
I saw GM's video first so was expecting similar results. Now i don't know what to think. As usual lol.

A few thoughts. 1) Though I know it's not modeled, I still expected to see a red coating on the inside of the P-51's plexiglass in that first fight. Brutal. 2) The TF34 is a really solid engine and well optimized for low level flight. It has a lot of get up and go below say 18,000 ft. Or at least it does if it behaves like the civilian CF 34. 3) I bet if the P-51 got on your six and peppered both of your engines with AP .50, you would find yourself in the safest best armored glider around.
Engines are still very vulnerable from the front and back, you can armor the nacelles all you want but you can't do anything about the inlet and exhaust. It'd likely only take a few rounds before the engines disassembled themselves.
And with that, GS puts the "ace" in asymmetrical dogfighting. Love that outro, man!

I'm wondering if its your P-51 pilot and whether he was playing to the P-51's strengths in this fight. You aren't the first to try this match-up in DCS, but you are the first to have the A-10 dominating this way.
I watched another channel so this fight recently and the Mustang dominated. Not sure what to think about it.

When you do these types of match ups you should fly both aircraft. That way the aircraft AND the pilot get evaluated evenly.
The damage models have come so far in DCS. Glad to see you still having fun in the warthog, it's an absolute favorite of mine. Had a lot of fun watching this one!

As an A10 Structural maintainer I cringe at the sight of the holes in the wing.

Actually got to see both of these planes fly side by side. It was awesome. In so many ways. Amazing that they could fly formation (given the weight and engine differences) and was actually a bit shocked (at the time) at how much bigger the A10 was next to the p51.
Well now that you've mentioned it in the video.. we want an A-10 vs F-22 dogfight
The A-10 versus Warbirds fights I have seen where the A-10 did not dominate were when the A-10 was laden with the extra weight of munitions.
That F22 killmark on that A-10 is a completely flex. That A-10 pilot will be forever bullying the F22 pilot everytime they met.
The 22 driver hasn't committed seppuku yet? Very dishonorable.

The P-51 honestly is NOT nearly as maneuverable as pop culture has led people to think. The laminar flow wing was designed for speed and range, not maneuvering, and didn't generate as much lift as the wing on the Spitfire, or particularly the F4U (which matched the mustang in speed and acceleration).
Now once Leatherneck releases their F4U-1D I'd love to see if it fairs better. The Corsair is much more maneuverable than the Mustang, with a significantly higher rate of roll, and a much better wing for maneuvering
9:00 I have no idea what he did but that was an incredible looking maneuver.
Snap roll. Looked like he pulled a bit too hard while yawing to the left, so his left wing stalled. He got it under control pretty quickly, so it worked out well for him.
Snap roll, kicked the rudder and snapped the stick into his gut. Good maneuver to force the overshoot.

I seem to recall hearing that the main thing people thought when it came to a P51 vs an A10 was about the turn rate in a 2 circle.
P-47 vs P-51 (at high altitude) would be interesting to see. Also worthy to note that in your P-47 vs A-10 video, the P-47 won 2 of those 4 rounds.
Depends on the exact versions, the P-51 should have the advantage up to 25k ft as it's generally the better dogfighter, from there up the Merlin kinda runs out of breath, and the 47s turbo should maintain its power better and give it the advantage.
@@rare_kumiko P-47N vs P-51D is what I was thinking, and yes keep the altitude up high enough that the P-47's turbo comes into play. Both planes have strengths and weaknesses. Be interesting to see how it would play out.

Interesting what you said about "making it interesting". I've been wandering a lot about your insane victory rate in videos. Obviously your an awesome pilot but It'd be cool to see you fly against a superior pilot in a dogfight of equally matched aircraft. Would also be cool if you did some more dogfight vids where you fight in both the featured aircraft in different rounds to see what's plane and what's pilot. It makes me wonder how it will turn out in a A10 VS ME262 match, you've shown us P51 stands almost no chance against 262...
And seeing all these crazy moves makes me feel like P51 is prop version super maneuverability
The 262 only really improves in firepower. It was even LESS maneuverable than the P-51 at low speeds.
262 would be better off doing hit and run passes on the A10. It has a speed advantage, and has a better armament of 4x30mm.
Might manage to scratch the A10s paint job...
262 will have the speed and probably climb rate advantage. A-10 will be more maneuverable. Actually very similar to the P-51 vs Me-262 fight.
I am pretty sure you hit the pilot in that first fight, instant mashed potatoes inside that cockpit... one of those rounds hitting someone must be absolute destruction!

This is what I watch for. Thanks! I'd like to see you run through the best of the WWII fighters and see if you can hand their asses to them as well, or find one that can hand the A10 it's ass. I have seen some dogfights on other channels between German fighters and the A10 that didn't go so well. Their cannon can do a fair bit more damage with one or just a few hits that the .50s. Anyway a series "A10 vs ???." Or maybe a blind merge series where you don't know which WWII era fighter you will face. Finally, I noticed you were flying without other ordnance. How much of an improvement is that?

Funny comment about your "Giving you all she's got, captain" remark - James Doohan who played Scotty on Star Trek (where the line is credited) was in the Canadian artillery in WWII then trained as a pilot to be an airborne artillery spotter. Granted, he never flew the P-51 but still, pretty neat dovetail there!

@@jackson-pl5zg That F-22 kill mark could have had a corresponding dozen A-10s on the F-22 he/she shot down in the exercise. That's why you do exercises - to learn. I does not tell you anything about plane capabilities where the skilled pilots are aware of their opponents strengths/weaknesses
@08:26 you should do 3 rounds in each earcraft. 3 in the A-10 3 in the P-51; that way we can see if it was Pilot skill or the plane
There was another DCS video showing the A-10 being decimated by the P-51. It’s the difference in pilots that tells the story here. Great job.
This actually makes a lot of sense to me. First of all the P-51 was the hot ship boom and zoomer for it's time. The A-10 took design cues from the A-1 Skyraider, you can really see it most in the wing profile. A-1 Skyraider was perfect for loiter and flying dump truck missions... but a Skyraider engaged a MiG-17 in 1966 over Vietnam and scored a gun kill. If a MiG-17 can lose to an A-1 Skyraider it's an easy connect for a P-51 outside it's envelope to lose to an A-10.

You should fly the P-51 against the A10 to show it is not the pilot error!
Seeing how low the A-10 got to the ground on that 3rd kill external shot makes me want to see you do the Final Countdown dogfight (Tomcats v Zeroes).
It was cool seeing 1983 get a shoutout! Those bomb stickers on the side were from a single deployment. Good times!

The P51 ramming the A10 reminded me of the time when i was playing football in 8th grade PE class. A guy who was a foot shorter and about 70lbs lighter than me tried to tackle me and broke his own collar bone in the process while i barely noticed and scored the touchdown.

Round 1 gave me a chuckle, thank you. Giant holes and then the P-51 tail said: "Yo...peace, I'm out, P-51 tail goes pop-pop!"
I spoke too soon, round 2 was even more funny. "He killed himself on me." You just needed to end it with a disgusted "Eww...Gross!" at the end. : )
