Excellent observation!
Can't imagine in all these years that didn't occur to me. It's actually more effective to not "over-explain" in movies because in real life there's not always an explanation for something. Consequently, picking-up on a foreshadowing detail subconsciously adds more emotional intensity when the result is a foregone conclusion, moreso than to pick-up on it consciously. Maybe that's why movies today with way too much money and time one their hands and no plot are less effective than a movie like Duel with no time or money and a great plot
