come with me as I show you a little bit of how I shot the Duel Truck with Brad Wike. I fell in love with North Carolina in my short time there. Its people are some of the warmest and best people in the country. I suggest you visit and maybe you'll be lucky enough to meet Brad and see his collection.

One of the scariest moments of the movie Duel, was the scene where Dennis Weaver is in the phone booth at the snakearama place, and you see the truck enter from out of frame and head right towards him. He is in a vulnerable spot in that phone booth with the door closed, and just escapes in the nick of time. Great job Spielberg.
Same location that Spielberg used in his classic 1941 movie. When Belushi landed the plane on the same road with the same Snake Lady. And if you look closely you can see the faint a Spielberg reflection in the phonebooth glass.
Makes you really appreciate the incredible driving skills of the stunt driver(s) who handled her so well in the movie.
Yeah saw it today and it looked incredible how he handled that truck, 80 mph in a truck? That takes some serious balls.
Taking corners fast in a car is one thing, but if im honest, if i drove a truck like that, i would stick to legal speed.
Cary Loftin was the driver, that man is a legend! My god he handled that Peterbilt like a pimp. Next time you see duel watch the end carefully, the front tires of the truck are already going off the cliff when he finally jumps out!!! That’s nerves of steel, nothing but respect for man.
@@sakariaskarlsson634 I live near where duel was filmed, my dream is to have a replica duel truck and haul ass down the same road. I’ll probably scare the shit out of myself in the process... Since I was 3 years old I have wanted to drive that beast. I have always wondered how it felt getting paid to aggressively chase and torment the valiant for 12 days with it. Sounds like 2 weeks of a awesome time.
Argentina. 😘. 💐. 👍
This is not the original 'Duel' truck. Spielberg only had one truck when he filmed the movie, and of course it went over a cliff. However, the TV movie was so popular Universal Studios decided to release it as a theater film, particularly in Europe. In order to do that they had to increase the film length from 75 minutes to 90 minutes, so they built two more trucks and Spielberg spent two days filming additional footage. So if this truck is really a truck from the movie, it is one of those two.
I have thought of that. I knew that according to the extras on the DVD, he sent the actual truck over the cliff, but then he expanded the movie for the theatrical release. Though they didn't say so, the clear implication had to be that they got another, identically looking truck.
I was told that the additional scene was the one with the school bus, but that would create a continuity problem. Before it, the truck is in front of Dennis Weaver, but after it, it's behind him. My guess is that the scene at the railroad crossing immediately afterwards must also be new, since after that, the truck is in front of him again.
It was also shown in Latin America... In Venezuela, at least, that I know of...
Two trucks I believe.
This is the original truck, just it's been restored and fixed from the cliff..
@@CarlosRicciardi726no it's not, the original was completely totaled, besides, the dash is completely different in this one
The guy who drove it in the movie seemed to know how to drive it real well
That would be Mr. Cary Loftin.
Who was he?
Cary Loftin was one of the finest stuntdrivers in Hollywood. And also one of the finest stuntmen in Hollywood-history.
He is a personal hero to me. I first saw duel when I was 3, and have always admired the way he handled that beast. 13 un-synchronized gears (double clutching required), no power steering, relatively shitty brakes, all in a truck that handles like a refrigerator full of bowling balls. Despite all the challenges, his driving exudes absolute control over the beast. He also was such a man that if you watch closely the door doesn’t swing open until the front tires have gone over the edge!!! Some device that would have driven the truck straight by itself failed, so Cary literally manned the helm until the last possible second! A true man.
What was that handle the driver pulled on just before the truck came off the cliff in this movie? Handbrake?
Thank you for posting this! My dad would have loved it. He was a huge truck lover and I remember watching Duel with him when it came out, I was 6 at the time. Dad's been gone 4 years now and I miss him very much.
thank you for watching. I'm sorry your dad is gone, I would've loved for him to have seen my videos.
My Father and I watched Duel together. He was a Dennis Weaver fan. I too miss my dad, it has been 14 years now.
I also saw this when it first came out And yep I was also 6, our parents had friends over and we a watched it w their kids in the finISHED room downstàirs..what a Great vibe we were all freaked out by it..Ioved it them and I still do
Lovely comment 🌹
❤❤💕💕😊😊
The truck sounds brilliant
Absolutely great subject matter and the guy who owns it is cool AF....people like him influenced my life in such as positive way why i did ok...sorely missing in America today
The Score for the movie really sold the tension and thriller of it! It is spooky, but in an awesome entertaining way. I feel like some of those sounds in the score are things that people would just automatically hear in their head being in a situation like this terrorized by a psychotic truck, driver in the middle of the California desert.
If I saw that thing on the road, I'd probably scream... even under tame conditions, it still has that exhaust note, the creepy horn....and that rust color. Scarier than 'Jaws.' And all props to stunt driver Carey Lofton for keeping that beast under control at speed!!
Thanks, this made my day.
The coolest part is the fact that it still has the exhaust leak before the muffler. It was like that in the 70s too
foxy 1047 really? Hahahahaha
Carey Loftin drove that truck in the movie. He was well respected and badass stuntman. . The truck that went over the cliff is still there. Somewhere in Valencia, Santa claita area.
That was "an extra".... that plummeted off the cliff?
@@paulcarpool2288 They have two used for this film.
@@paulcarpool2288No, it was the hero truck, it's gone. This must be the one they used for the additional shots for the theatrical release.
Just watched Retro Recipes go there and look. The property people and the production company both said the wreckage was winched out after the stunt. They actually found a truck there, but it wasn't the Duel truck oddly
Excellent video..loved the ride along..that guy is living the life wit his beautiful land and trucks...
"Skip the ride-along"? Hell no man, that's the best part of this, that is apart from the wonderful sound of that rig!
Keep up the great work guys, love this!
Hell yeah!!!
What a golden chance to be able to even touch it, not mentioning to actually driving it!
I wonder how many people that met you guys almost crapped themselves seeing that wicked truck coming toward them. Awesome.
One of my favorite movies! That truck scared the tar out of me- brilliant movie, excellent stunt driving and Dennis Weaver was sensational. Loved thar Pete🔥
THANK YOU!!! Great video!!! Duel is my all time favorite movie!!!
I bet anyone driving behind the truck was too scared to pass by because they knew the truck from Duel and they knew what happened to the last guy that passed by it.
i had the same thought:D
he passed away 1997
the truck actually sounds like in the movies. I never knew if they added some stock sounds but it seems they made real recordings.
I live near Brad, talked to him a few times. He has a truck show every fall, usually in September. BTW, you are correct...we like the way we live out here! :) However, you came at the best time of year, as now it is 90 degrees and 100% humidity....
That movie made a lot of people have chills run up there spine when a semi would get behind them for a long time
I learned on a 9 speed and a 13 speed. This had the twin shifter levers, one for the main transmission and one for the auxillary transmission. I always marveled at how they shifted. I never learned on one of these.
My dad had an old International Harvester with one of those split differentials, It had a little motor that gave the transmission extra gears. The problem is the things were very temperamental, if you used it wrong it would burn out the motor. So they tended to not use it at all.
Nossa, fiquei emocionado vendo este vídeo, olhei o filme na minha adolescência e só olhei ele novamente com 40 anos de idade. VER ESSE VÍDEO FOI SENSACIONAL!!!!
Grande abraço do Brasil 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
Nice find. Great truck. I’m a trucker, and them old duplex transmissions were fun to drive. 5 main, 4 auxiliary. Nice.
Very happy to see the truck still works well, and the sound is really something different, which was giving us goosebumps while watching the movie
No exhaust clouds here, how well maintained this gem clearly is. Credit to you keeping it rolling.
That's the second truck. Used for extra filming after production. Original truck was a single stick ten i believe
That is correct. The original truck was destroyed when it went over the cliff at the ending.
Skip past the Ride A Long, are you kidding me???? Loved the 1st vid and this is even better. Thanks for all your work enjoying all your efforts. Please keep it up.
I just discovered your channel man, it is superb. Real high production value and great content. I remember watching Duel with my parents on TV in the UK when I was a kid in the 70's. Loved this mean looking US truck. Great to see the passion you guys have.
Beautiful Places, beautiful Trucks, beautiful Corn Plantation, amazing, very interesting video.
Very good video, theAFICIONAUTO.
Have been a truck driver in the UK for nearly 40 years. Have driven some old trucks over the years. Would love a go in this one. Iconic.
I liked the ride along. Great to see & hear the truck going through the gears.
glad to hear it!
Assisti o filme pela primeira vez no final dos anos 70 e sempre que posso assisto de novo
yeeesss. there was a sneak peek at the snow man's truck from smokey and the bandit in the last video and now another. yeeeesssssss
I like the behind the scenes! That's a lot of stuff to lug around the country and set up! I know I appreciate it and am always waiting for the next video. Still the best videos and interviews on UA-cam!
I'm a Tractorholic thank you so much!! I really appreciate it
Thank you for posting this video. I loved the movie Duel. The gas tank attached to the tractor had a date 1948. One thing about diesel engines is you can rack up huge millage before the engine wears out. One trucker told me he got 1,000,000 miles out of his diesel engine before getting it overhauled .
Didn't know that this scary monster looking truck was a 1955 PETERBILT.
I remember FLAMMABLE and did not see explosion when it went over cliff.
Ive been told the truck used in Duel was my grandfather's truck. He use to deliver gas for Unocal or back then maybe 76? Unfortunately he passed away in 1992, and my father passed away in 1996 so I cannot confirm the story. If you knew the history of the truck before Duel, I would appreciate it.
I would LOVE to watch a 1 hour trip in this truck:)
So cool that the truck is still around
how come it wasn´t destroyed in tha mammoth dive into the abyss? was it restored?
Smokey and the bandit truck from what I could see looked awesome
The inside of that truck looks exactly the way I imagined it. Saw this movie when it first came out on TV when I was a kid. Do Killdozer too!
So awesome!!!
A very ominous and imposing vehicle. Nice to see it again.. I have the movie.. I wouldn't be surprised if you discovered James Cagney hiding in the trailer? That is so basic and old fashioned. Amazing it still runs and is drivable..
The truck even sounds like a demon. I don’t blame the driver, I blame peterbilt for building a demonic truck
True. Scary truck.
@Gappie Al Kebabi Islam only accepts voluntary converts so you are wrong my dear friend and maybe there is no religion so if they are even a little bit religious they believe in god and thats enough .Selam
You're right, it just sounds angry.
Lmaooooooooo
@Gappie Al Kebabi fuck islam
Love this movie. Would be awesome to see this recreate some of driving scenes it done in the movie locations. Fact- the moaning sound used when truck goes over cliff is the same sound Spielberg used when Bruce from Jaws was sinking to bottom at the end of movie.
I thought it got destroyed when it drove off the cliff. Glad you enjoyed your less than a minute driving experience.
Awesome seeing more footage of this! Love it!
That mirror on the hood bring back a lot of memories, the hood mirror is use to look up at the smoke stack truckers that were drive over the mountains of the west would adjust a fuel mixtures and they would use a mirror to see how rich the fuel mixture was.
HI. I am so glad someone else understands what the point of having the mirror there was for. I tried to explain to many that is what it was for,to watch the air fuel mixture or to prevent lugging the engine. Nobody understood.
capesquirt yep that what they did in the old day when they were driving over the mountains in the rogued west
oh that's cool! I had no idea that's what it was for!
Smoke patrol...absolutely
Yep, a "Texas Tach". If the mixture is adjusted right you could make flames shoot out of the stack at night. Might not see it on this one though because of the big hole in the exhaust pipe under the stack. Still, this is my favorite movie vehicle of all time!
Wow, surfing around and found this! Very interesting - what a ride. What a find!
Mi like movie Duel Monster 1971.Very excellent mi friend. Yeeesss💓😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍🇺🇸
Why do i love the sound when it starts up.Reminds me of the Chucks Cafe scene in the movie.
LOVE, Love, love the Duel truck. I had to laugh when they got it out on the road and the first car they passed was a RED car! 🤣🤣🤣
This may be rusty but its engine sounds perfect... A beast!
-4 Years ago. I thought this was all recent stuff, like a month or two ago. So on to something more up to date.
One word, awesome!! Would've be in Heaven there and getting the chance to not only ride in that truck but drive it! IMO, this was even better than your first video!
Wow great! DUEL is one of greatest car horror movies and that Peterbild 281....i want that..
That box that covers the back window is the only air conditioner that was available. The driver simply picked up a block of ice and dropped it in. Cool air would circulate naturally through and into the cab. Better than nothing 😆
YOU should do the the goblin true from maximum overdrive
Ha! I got to drive that truck one time in 1986!! It looks pretty good years later!
"There's something to it..." Sage words indeed.
Oh man, that looks like fun driving that thing!
Thanks to your video in April 2021 I was able to stop and visit this great collection of trucks. Got to sit in Dual truck and Bandit truck.
I have that same blue plaid, shirt but you look more handsome in yours... on the other hand, the phrase "grind um till you find um comes to mind..."
Superb Media Content Creator hahahah thanks!
Somewhat of a disappoint that you didn't try to kill anyone with the truck
Imagine driving now and seeing that behind you!!! LOL!!!! Oh lawdie!
It's why they had such a big steering wheel to compensate for the lack of power steering. I also love the sound of that 220 cummings strength pipe.. repower this to a 425 Cat and a 18 speed that would be a grate start to re purposing
I didn't realise how much I needed to see 1987 Axl Rose drive the duel truck
Que coisa incrível ver essa lenda do filme que perseguiu o carro vermelho 😃
Very cool! I was 8years old . found a perfect replica of this truck! I spay painted Brown! An wrote on the lettering. It was the coolest toy I had !
Looks great, sounds amazing!!!!!
Great truck!
The truck still gives me the creeps lol, love it
OMG I loved this truck so much. I yelled when they drove it over the cliff.
The Dual Truck is the most beautiful looking machine I've ever seen. It's show room quality and mint condition is the first thing I've noticed as though it came straight out of the factory assembly line brand spankers. It's user friendly and great to drive I bet. There is nothing wrong with it and it gives one a look that it will always pass its M.O.T test!
Old truckers never die they just get a New Peter Built !
Didn't skip over the drive, I loved it all!
OMG , My childhood - hero !! What a beauty : ) Love this "Badass - engine Sound !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Greetings from Germany !
So nice the Duel truck still lives. Only thing missing is David Mann's Mopar car.
Love that comfy looking passenger bench.
Erik Caldwell hahahah right?! Super safe like death proof
The sound of the truck is amazing
Awersome , very cool
Love the videos would have been nice to see his entire collection of trucks. Great work that duel truck and the truck from maximum overdrive got me into trucking.
Chris Moctezuma yeah I thought I did a walk through of the inside but I guess I ran out of time.
A nice movie, nice truck selection, 1971 but still there
Such a cool truck. That sound 👹. Still one of the best films
great movie. i was 11 when i saw it on ABC network.. very creepy but i could not turn the channel..loved the ending too. McCloud for the win.. lol
This truck is a beast! Reminds me of the old rusty truck in Jeepers Creepers!
Scary part of the film, is when the truck came back and stopped in the tunnel, then it's headlights come on.......eerie 💀😯
Nice video. Congrats. Funny, that movie crossed my mind just the other day. Loved Dennis Weaver. Was excellent in that character Spielberg had/has a knack for suspense. 50 years and still thrilling.
Those old trucks with the auxiliary trannies were a bear. Don't know if that Pete was a 16 sp(4/4) or a 20sp (5/4). I learned on a '57 White, which had a 4/4. Lots of fun, but a steep learning curve.
she sounds so beautiful.
Heaven!!!! Reminds me of home, Robbins, NC!!!
I thought when they pulled in to the gas station he might say "Now let's pick someone to follow" I guess this movie couldn't really happen today in the cel phone era. This truck is older than a Modell T Ford was when I was a kid! Dang!
That's what I started my trucking career on, 5X4 twin stick, it hurts to hear a rare transmission scratching gears.
The truck looks great.
And I love the movie .
The mirror on the hood was actually eyeballing the stack, and as such, the old school "check engine" light.
It is hard to see the beauty of truck, without that red car
As the old timers used to say about trucks like that, you don't drive em ya herd em.🐎 Eee haw
W900A KENWORTH SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT TRUCK SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT TRUCK FOAMING FOAMING
Thanks for the ride! :-)
You got a new sub, like and share today @theAFICIONAUTO
So wow! I just watched this movie two nights ago, using my Xbox as the DVD player, and here it shows up on my suggested videos on YT. Isn't that WEIRD folks? I love this movie and I remember my dad (mom didn't like anything remotely scary, she didn't go with us) taking me to a drive-in theatre to see it and I was terrified that this would happen to use for any or no reason.....lol I eventually became a truck driver and I had a reproduction poster from the theatre hanging up on the back of my sleeper along with a poster from Big Trouble in Little China and Black Dog.
Justin Trudeau needs to watch Duel, then go to North Carolina and take a look at the truck. It would be enlightening for him.
Always noticed that box hanging off the back and thought in real life it would be some type of cable/hose storage box or something, but it makes sense now!
