I just realised that icewrought sentry's buff isnt once per turn, meaning, if you tap multiple things it can get huge. There so many cool things in this set and I'm exicted to try both in limited and constructed.
It actually is once per turn, because it allows you to pay 2 mana when you attack. You only attack once per turn (unless you gain an additional combat phase, but I don't think any WoE cards have that effect.)
My favourite prerelease game is guessing whether blue will be underpowered trash or sneakily good. You’d think excellent set reviews like this would help, but it doesn’t. I just wish they’d print a crazy mythic that’s not over priced, doesn’t affect the board junk.
I think you are spot on with extraordinary journey. The more that I read the card the more I realized how good it is because in theory at the very worst it is a sorcery speed into the roil(as in a 4 mana bounce spell that draws you a card) which is usually always at least a C+ and this card has extra upside and scales all game long. Definitely at least a B and maybe can see a B+.
This review made me realize I maybe should put it in the Wishboard of my explorer Adventures deck that this set finally revived. It's an okay Innkeeper that also triggers of Escape to the Wilds and can rebuy Adventures
3:20, yeah something like "U, TAP: Draw a card." You know, he is the __Archive__ Dragon, he should have something more to do with a __library__ ("The Archivist" is an old rare Wizard 1/1 for 2UU with "TAP: Draw" that is almost forgot, adding "U" to draw could be good enough to me to balance it out)
It actually won’t. Creatures can only have one role that you control. The role your opponent put on their creature has a different controller than the cursed role you put there, so the creature will keep both roles.
That sounds fun. But I've never seen a card that mixes players' decks. It might be problematic. Players might forget which card belongs to whom after playing. And what if the deck gets reshuffled? If players use different sleeves, the position of the moved card will be exposed.
Picklock prankster might just be the best creature for the "young hero" role, as it can get the greatest amount of counters possible (unless a 0 power creature shows up) while having a decent toughness and useful keywords to begin with.
Very noticeable as you were going through how few of the blue cards make random bargainable stuff to throw away. Given blue seems to have very good bargain payoffs, it does seem important that you make sure the rest of your deck is supporting your bargain cards effectively or you could end up with those cards seriously underperforming.
I feel like Cursed Role tokens are a little better than they look. Making a creature's P/T lower is definitely not fully removing a creature, but for blue decks, I see myself using Cursed Role tokens as post-combat removal spells. You mark damage with attackers, then lower an opposing blocker's base toughness post-combat to possibly kill the creature. This can help blue decks become far more aggressive, and makes me value blue's Cursed Roles far more highly. It isn't perfect, but since Cursed Role tokens are mostly bonuses attached to decent cards, I like the potential play patterns they introduce.
@NizzahonMagic ah true, that's what i meant. You can put a cursed role token and downgrade a creature. Then if you get to a point where you don't have to worry about the creature anymore, you can sac the role token to bargain or something. Don't even know how good that will be, but gives you more to do with it. Also, big fan of your content!
I’m a bit confused by the role enchantment tokens - in the explanation text of Gadwick’s First Duel, it seems to say that if a pre-existenting role ”you control” enchants the target creature, sacrifice that older token. Does that mean each creature can simultaneously be enchanted with one role for each different player in the game?
Why is Disdainful Stroke uncommon? I think it could be better than an F since I imagine the permanent sides of adventures often cost 4 or more and you can see them coming.
If you're planning on countering the second half of adventures a lot in this format, you aren't going to do that well. Mostly because that's some serious card disadvantage. That said, maybe Stroke is better in this format than I think. But being able to counter adventure creatures will only be a small part of the reason.
@@NizzahonMagic totally agree that it won’t be amazing (or even good) or but I could see it making the 21-23rd card slot in a pinch. I’d put it closer to D/D-. Splitting hairs! Still confused why they made it uncommon though.
With Extraordinary Journey - if you destroyed your own enchantment after exiling a bunch of your opponents cards, would they lose the ability to play them from exile?
No, because the ability to play the cards is linked to the ETB trigger: "When Extraordinary Journey enters the battlefield, exile up to X target creatures. For each of those cards, its owner may play it for as long as it remains exiled." As long as that trigger has resolved (which it obviously has if the creatures got exiled) and the cards remain exiled, their owners can play them. If the ability to play those cards was a static ability of the enchantment instead, then everyone would be unable to replay the creatures if the enchantment left the battlefield.
Maybe this is just me being an idiot again, but Blue seems stacked to me this time. Blue has so many ways to hold down creatures and swing in for damage or build a big threat that it looks like LotR's Black this time.
Whoa, I didn't expect two set reviews today. Much appreciated!
Yep, they are coming out every 12 hours this time.
That's twice as many as I expected!
The trick with Ingenious Prodigy is getting a Young Hero role on him so he can keep drawing while staying evasive.
I really like the flavor of that interaction too.

I've already made a casual deck that uses narcolepsy and topplegeist to get extra card draw and damage.

@@bluemage1ah good eye! I was mistaken :)

Lucky clover was absolutely ridiculous in Eldraine. Makes me excited to see the chancellor of tales
This does cost 4 mana and is easier to remove though, but the 'may' trigger makes it way less awkward than Clover ;)

Asinine Antics will remove any good roles that are currently on your opponents creatures, so that's kinda cool.

why do some rares do not appear in limited like Faerie Slumber Party or Lady of Laughter?
They aren't in draft boosters. These days there are like three booster types, confusingly enough. Those are from set or collector boosters.

Since you control the cursed role token, you can also bargain it away if that ever comes up.
You don't control it unless it is one you created.

Roles are one per creature PER PLAYER, so if you don't control the cursed role, you can't get rid of it by placing another role on the creature.
@RibusPQR wait, can one player not have multiple creatures with a single role on them? Its only one creature per player?

Correct. After all what’s simply a monster to you might be a royal to someone else.

Coralsmith works well with a young hero role.

How do they remove the curse roles easily? Their roles cannot push your roles off
Well, the same way enchantment removal is always easier to get rid of. Bounce, blink, etc.
gadwick's first duel, say hello to tasha. time to mill 40 mana worth of cards

For the cursed role it says creature is 1/1....is that base power/toughness or inclusive of any equipments and other buffs attached to it?
The actual token says base power and toughness
