I think you hit the nail on the head. Plus too much product means people are now already starting to look at Ixalan to see what that has. Great set but it feels like it already came and went. Sad.
The store I work at can't keep the product on the shelf. I have had people just buy box after box. Only thing on the shelf is the commander Virtue and Valor.
Since BG3 was released, I've done nothing but play BG3. It's been exponentially more fun to play that with my MTG group than play MTG and jump into the hype/buy cycle monthly. Once im ready to move on from BG3, I'll have Starfield waiting for me. Its a great time to be alive and not spend endless cash on product releases.
I was a new player that got drawn in by the Universes Beyond sets and was really excited to finally get into Magic. However after what happened with Commander Masters... I'm never buying a set on release ever again.
Commander Masters was ROUGH but MOST Standard set releases are fairly stable - in fact I am STILL a massive fan of the WoE Set Booster Box and think it offers a great experience to players both like myself who have been playing for a lifetime and you, who is new to our community. Also if you are looking for value remember the tried and true words of TCC - "BUY SINGLES" you will ALMOST ALWAYS get a better deal buying the cards you want than you will opening boxes - a portion of what you pay to open the box should be considered entertainment IMO. Also - welcome to our community and thanks for checking out the channel
@@HometownTcg Since I was a new player (to Magic, I play other card games) I was just picking up preconstructed stuff to build out a collection of Commander Pods to sling some cardboard with my friends and learn the game. I had preordered the Commander Masters Decks through my LGS and was keeping tabs on the projections for the set ahead of release, through cool YT channels like your own 😎 Once it looked like things were taking a turn for the worse I chose to not cancel my preorder since I still wanted to support my LGS. But seeing the Commander Decks sell for $100 less than I paid for them on the DAY OF RELEASE was a tough pill to swallow. My LGS is still stuck trying to sell them for a loss... So I'm just going to support other card games that I like and I'll treat this as a learning experience to "engage with the products that I want to engage with" 😆
The Brothers War was the last time I bought sealed boxes with the exception of the Pre-release kits. I am surprised Wilds of Eldraine is not selling that well. It is a very good set with powerful cards and the artwork is great. The box prices at our LGS is so cheap so I bought Pre-release kits for drafting and two set booster boxes. I got a lot of key cards from the set booster packs. Then I bought a bunch of cards I was missing on TCGPlayer that were so cheap. I paid $32.50 for each Commander Deck and I am going to make some good tweaks for the Faerie deck. Thank. you for the video Hometown.
Not to many big hitters in this set but glad to finally see anime artwork, I do my own proxies with anime art that I make that fits the card or similar to the OG art just anime style and always love the way they come out.
Mtg players did as they were told by WotC. We ONLY engaged with the products that resonate with us. That includes engaging with products that WotC does not produce, products that are kinder on our wallets, and are higher quality.
Pro: WOE draft is fun. Cons: No new Modern Format playables. Blood Moon has been reprinted to death. No serialized cards to chase. Not everyone is into anime art (I'm very meh about it). Global economy is not great right now despite what Biden wants to tell us. College loans are coming due in the fall. People probably spent more than they should on Lord of the Rings and are now broke. Wizards continual focus on Commander and Arena and general disregard for paper Standard and paper competitive formats. WotC tried to gaslight us and tell us organized play would be a focus. I have not seen this happen yet and they are dragging their heels. Basically there are a lot of headwinds for this product.
Agree that it has a LOT going against it. If the world climate shifts maybe we look back on this set more fondly than we felt in the moment, but we haven't done that in a while yet either... Also always good to see ya on these conversations! Thanks for sharing your thoughts
You thought they were focused on commander last year. Now they make the cards, and I guess they get to decide the ban list since they took over for the rules committee.
This set is a normal set. The primary issue is its a set coming off back to back premium products so budgets for magic product aren't necessarily higher. The theme is fun and interesting but, historically speaking more whimsical sets tend to sell worse like Lorwyn opposed to Innistrad. Also, we are starting a story arc, opposed to March of the machines and ONE which were built on hype within the story buildup for a few years. There just isn't narrative momentum. The bonus sheet enchantments is amazing for EV from a financial perspective for casual collectors. However, hardcore collectors really only care about serialized cards and have tended to be less excited similarly rare chase cards like Gilded Gang leaders in SNC , Alt Arts in NEO, so collector boxes aren't selling as well as other sets. That being said the confetti foil anime cards are demanding a pretty hype price even without a numbered stamp on them.
I was thinking about buying a box but after looking at every card in a set and putting all the cards i wanted in a list (besides the rhystic study) its costs less to have every card i want
I believe MTG is in dire trouble. I think as more players/collectors/investors accept the realization of the damage done by all the reprints in the past 3 years, this trend will continue and deepen. I am not sure there will be a path to correction for MTG, not in the long term.
Idk if I can get behind "mtg is in trouble" without it being "tcg's and collectables" are in trouble as we have come to know them over the past couple years. I think we are returning to pre-2020 days and I believe the change will be swift and will shock some reality into all of us.
@@HometownTcg I would not say all TCGs. Lorcana seems to be doing fine. Additionally you need to assess each collectible for its own merits as to why they are doing poorly compared to the past 3 years. MTG is most definitely in trouble due to its own behavior over the past 3 years, regardless of what is happening to other collectibles. If all collectibles were in trouble, then Lorcana would also be in trouble. Macro economic pressures is a whole other topic, and like all things, it is never just one single facet causing success or failure. In my opinion WotC has made many missteps leading to the current state. I think it is fair to say a huge part of the buying public, or at least those that have traditionally spent the most on MTG feel a sense of betrayal and deception on the part of WotC. Just one example is the lack of transparency by WotC, like not publishing print run numbers (even several years after the print runs are oop). I am not certain WotC will be able to make meaningful corrections and reestablish trust with its consumers. I am not as knowledgeable about many other collectibles, but would be happy to look into any you are referring to in order to educate myself and provide my analysis on them if you name them specifically. Also I sent you an email about the Lorcana challenge but have not seen a response.
@mtggamingbob2822 lorcana is doing fine because it's a speculation on a big ip disney but you are not taking 2 things into consideration. First this is not Disney's first time releasing a card game. We have in the past had a nightmare before Christmas tcg but it didn't last long term. This could be different since we have a bigger pool of ips to draw from this time around. The second and the biggest one. How is the market going to react to lorcana once we get a bigger wave of chapter 1 booster boxs hitting the market. Will the prices hold or will they fall since it's no longer as rare? These are things to consider.
@HometownTcg mtg will do fine the ploy with universe's beyond and the newer stuff is to bring in a new generation of players since catering to a small minority the older players is not a good business model for long term growth. The older players will get phased out with newer blood that will hopefully provide a different outlook on the game instead of just negative from most of it. Also this has happened before chronicals was the first time and wotc implemented a fail safe. The second time was around the time of Mercadian Masques and we recovered just fine since then so why is this time any different yes the 4 variants of the same card is silly but history has shown that we will be fine the only difference between then and now is youtube adding in their takes on the doom and gloom which is purely background echo caused by the few with the biggest influence on their followers.
@@tysnow9524 Finances are finances regardless of the generation of fans. Time will tell, but the data and trend analysis are the doom and gloom, not the influencers. You are most certainly entitled to believe whatever you wish though.
The issue is, you could have used that logic to hold onto sealed long term in the past, but not anymore. And when most enchanted tales aren’t expensive but all the value is in literally 2 mythics in the set and confetti foil waifu arts, then its seems like no modern product is safe. If you think 5 years from now the enchanted tale doubling season will matter, then you’re wrong imo; card was $120 down to $80 and now down to $50-$60…..and the set been out less than a week. Woe has good playability, art, and feel, but the value isn’t there beyond game pieces. Im fine with that but im glad i sold my backstock of singles already as buylists now are so bad basically every card $3-$7 gets you bulk price of 25 cents max….thats how bad the mtg market is.
The Anime and Confetti cards should have been WoE exclusives, not the reprints. Overall, however, I think we're seeing a shift in player mentality coming out of the pandemic era pricing. Instead of a set being valuated extremely high, then losing 50-90% of the vale, we're seeing the opposite. I feel like rare cards are no longer rare, and mythic has become the new rare, so the overall quantity available there drives some prices down. But.. to me.. this feels much more like a 1993/1994 set. The buy in is low, most of the singles are cheap, and then appreciate in value. Unfortunately, they probably printed warehouses of it and that value won't go up too much.. but it definitely has that "feel" to it, where Bro, MoM, Phryexia, (and the pandemic sets) all had the inverse. It was like opening Christmas presents and getting what you wanted every time. Then it was about unloading it while the market was hot... unless you were a player/collector and holding onto those cards/product eventually lost you money/value.
Focusing on your point about one of the Confetti foil, I think the worry is that unique cards printed in a set don't seem to move standard product as much as we would like - I AGREE with you, but I could see WotC being concerned about people not wanting another unique foiling
@@HometownTcg I mean.. Doubling Season was, at one point, a unique set card. They could have picked cards that they intend to reuse.. like Moonshaker Calvary, etc..
I bought a set booster box and I got amazing returns from it. I got meathook, doubling season and Agatha’s cauldron. I ended up getting like $200 of cards and it is probably one of my favorite sets so far.
I'm getting into Lorcana and saving up for the MTG Doctor Who stuff that comes out next month. I love the the first Eldraine set, but this is just more of the same and to me there are hardly any interesting cards.
Kinda surprised WoC released a fairytale theme the same time Lorcana launched. But it also makes sense if TCG newcomers play Lorcana then wanna play something similar and a bit more complex.
After(math) and reprint summer strained collectors and players. Amazon Prime day also trained me personally to avoid LOTR until it gets dumped. Even though Wilds is almost entirely new cards (which players want, and it's actually a good set), only three cards have value in the core set, the reprint set is mostly Collector Edition confetti value. And we have been trained a Dump will come... WOTC kind of brought this upon themselves.
Just because a product is affordable doesn't mean that opportunity costs disappear. I'm enjoying opening Eldraine, but I am electing to buy them versus more expensive product and I am losing out on the opportunity to open cards considered premium when I do.
I really like the set design and the cards. But I've stopped all investing in MTG due to Hasbro's over printing, constant reprinting, huge number of variants, and the collector box era (nothing is special). That reduced my spend by 80-90 %.
I LOVE this set and think its going to continue to be fun for us for a long time. As far as investing I can't speak to that but I do like collecting sealed product and have def added some WoE to the collection

We are living in historical times we’re we are literally suffering way worse than the Great Depression but nobody has realized it yet. Inflation and cost of living are unprecedented and because the media isn’t admitting it, people’s light bulb hasn’t turned on. Everyone has less money for magic booster boxes when their food, rent, gas, utilities and everything else has tripled in last 3 years. A lot more wives and gf’s like my own are cracking down on how much I spend on magic every set, which is 1/3 of the amount I used to get away with.
honestly I like the enchanted tales slot BUT i hate how they did 2 new art styles for some of them.... it really does hurt the wallet when u are trying to collect the set
This set gets me back after 15 years off, I was surprised it didn't rock because for me, it's a very good set. But now that i'm aware of the recent release policy of Hasbro, I understand. We're in a large world economic crisis and wallets are empty by all those releases. It's a shame, because in my early year's of Magic, this set would have been probably a thing and we would be waiting for its 2 extensions.
selling boxes that cost the same or almost as a ps5 is wotc living in another world.. wotc is squeezing players wallets so much that in the future even normal products will only sell if big price drops appear, magic is a game we love but its not a first necessity product as wotc thinks. their greed will be their downfall. at my lgs the sealed product is being bought less and less every new set, people buy singles or are leaving the game and that is wotc fault with their prices,in the future they will have one way out only, that is lower the sealed price by a lot ,a simple shave in prices will not be enough.
For me WOE seems kinda meh. As I’m coming back to MTG I think it’s a bit overwhelming with all these releases and mechanics especially. Definitely favor the block system where we have time with each set’s mechanics
I have often wondered if the block system would work with the limited attention span of our community these days coupled with the release model WotC has implemented - It can definitely be overwhelming and you have to pick and choose what you engage with these days. To be clear, I am an old man and I miss blocks and the old ways, but I try to accept that things have changed and enjoy what I can
Lmfao. "Our hard earned money".. ..that the last of dried up in the year 2022. Sometimes. When you identify the issue but arent going to go on in the video to identify the issue.
Well you said it yourself, the thing you think would be cool later is opening it for Enchanting Tales, not any of the actual set cards. When the best thing to look for is REPRINTS again and again its really lame actually. They need to stop reprinting everything into the ground, why would you buy this set when you know anything good will just be reprinted possible back to back just like doubling season..
They Made the chase cards to hard to obtain EG (Rhystic Study - Smothering tithe) only in Anime art?? Bad Decision look at the outcome for selling MASS JUNK.
Why print a standard set where they think people will want four of each rare when people only want one of each for commander??? They are printing at least 4x more than they need to. Rares are worth nothing because they don't need them.
I am not a fan of playing this set. It feels like all of the enchanting tales are more for commander and do not really work in limited. I have liked the cards that I will use in my commander decks from this set, though. It might have been better to make this a commander set if they wanted to include so many enchanting tales
I can tell you. Standard didn’t rotate so there is no reason to buy the 5th or 6th ramp spell. There are too many redundant spells and the cards don’t do anything to the current powerful cards in the set. Also it looks like an unset art wise and flavor. First eldraine was a good idea. This set just seems way too goofy
Seem like the only ones complaining, are people trying to make a living off of MTG. It seem to be opeing the pieces to a wider audience. Which seems good for the enjoyment of playing the game
Commander is the worst thing to happen to Magic. I truly wish Wizards would spin it off into its own game with its own releases so we can get back to having good sets for serious 60-card formats, not more sets where half of the creatures are legendaries meant for Timmies and Spikes and other terrible casuals to put into their 100-card piles that they play community solitaire with 😂
I do believe MTG is healthier and better for everyone involved when the focus isn't 100% commander. I would LOVE to see WotC pivot away from this as time goes on and seek a more balanced approach!
Personally, the set stinks because all of the value is tied up in the mythic slot… I pulled two mythics from a whole box of collectors boosters. Two mythics in twelve packs just doesn’t cut it.

That’s awesome! Mtg limited is almost always a good time
I think the set looks like fine, but there were very few cards I was very interested in. MH3 is less than a year away…
honestly I like the enchanted tales slot BUT i hate how they did 2 new art styles for some of them.... it really does hurt the wallet when u are trying to collect the set
Set collecting in MTG is really tough with all the versions these days but it has to feel great once the set is complete!
Don't get it... it is a fun and powerfull set with fine art, mechanics, new and reprint cards..... Don't get it. 🤘🦁🤘
We just aren't taking to it - I still like the set tho!
Burned 🔥 out is beside the point, Food and Gas and bills come first, everyone is struggling, buying overprinted cardboard is useless at the moment.
selling boxes that cost the same or almost as a ps5 is wotc living in another world..
wotc is squeezing players wallets so much that in the future even normal products will only sell if big price drops appear, magic is a game we love but its not a first necessity product as wotc thinks.
their greed will be their downfall.
at my lgs the sealed product is being bought less and less every new set, people buy singles or are leaving the game and that is wotc fault with their prices,in the future they will have one way out only, that is lower the sealed price by a lot ,a simple shave in prices will not be enough.
Idk if MTG will have a downfall as we think of it, but I do think the trading card game space is going to spend some time coming back down to earth.
To be clear, I am an old man and I miss blocks and the old ways, but I try to accept that things have changed and enjoy what I can
Wallet fatigued , too many products a year, reprint equity has gone downhill and Amazon dump.
Great game but lousy management.
No rare is over $2. So might as well buy the singles.
Lol
Rip, I bought cards last night. Maybe shoulda waited
You can never really tell but hey - I REALLY like this set and I hope you have a lot of fun playing your cards and jamming some games
Lmfao. "Our hard earned money"..
..that the last of dried up in the year 2022. Sometimes. When you identify the issue but arent going to go on in the video to identify the issue.
apart from up the beanstalk and maybe bunnie unicorn and full art forest i dont think the set has anything major
Well tbf most of it was once again commander reprints. Which I'm sure infuriates all the other formats
It's all about commander and while I accept that, I wish it wasn't so...
I usually make a list of singles to grab from every set, but lately that list is getting shorter and shorter
There is lorcana
There it is! ❤️❤️❤️
Can't wait for the Fallout MTG next year!
That one is gonna be sweet - lots of people excited for it for sure! ❤️
I am not a fan of playing this set. It feels like all of the enchanting tales are more for commander and do not really work in limited. I have liked the cards that I will use in my commander decks from this set, though. It might have been better to make this a commander set if they wanted to include so many enchanting tales
It came out after Lorcana drop so everyone’s broke from that
I can tell you.
Two in 12 Draft packs seems right, but definitely not in 12 Collector packs.
For me it's: Didn't MTG already do fairy tales?
And
Why would I buy fairy tales when I can buy LOTR or Dr Who?
Singles?
What about em?
Easy, broke. Too many sets one right after another. Also, already have alot of the cards.
First
The champ is here 🤘🤘🤘
I must be the 1% Spend 500 euro's on Wilds of Eldraine. And love the set :D Nice cards in this set :D
I'm from the future. People bought the set just fine
