    About the rail: massively agree with the changes made. However, that curve is too tight (you don’t want a train to have to slow down that much in the middle of a journey). The rail company is more likely to pay for the bridge to be extended (or the bank raised to allow the track to pass under it) than to accept a bend that tight and slow.
    As for raised track, it’s very common in English rail construction (although I don’t know as much for the US). It allows the trains to maintain a greater speed, since most of the surrounding area is low, rolling hills, much like coastal Magnolia. It also helps to prevent flooding.

    • @erikjohnpotvin
      @erikjohnpotvin 6 місяців тому +16

      Ya that bend was cringe too tight as a rail fan. I would just pull that connection way back down the two lines, have the road go over it.

    • @fgm5225
      @fgm5225 6 місяців тому +13

      It would't be that unreasonable in older, underused sections or close to depots or stations, but in this case, more or less in the middle of the main corridor, it is a bottleneck for the whole network. Any train taking the turn will have to slow down so much that it risks delaying all those coming behind.

    • @Falkirion
      @Falkirion 6 місяців тому +4

      Well since we're probably revisiting it next time I'd suggest a much gentler wye configuration. Back it out further and maybe have it cross the road to make the connection. With an eye to the future for grade separation to be done.
      Only other solution in its current position to have a flyover but I dont know how keen Jamila would be on that idea or how it'd play with the road network.
      As someone who works in rail (the signalling side, not the actual track construction) that curve just gives me headway nightmares

    • @Zeakthecat
      @Zeakthecat 6 місяців тому +8

      to be honest, here in the US it'll be the complete opposite. raised track would be a non-starter by CSX, Union Pacific, NS, and BNSF, which are the 4 major rail companies in the US for any area. it would be considered cheaper to dig straight through rolling hills.
      then again, rail construction is a rare sight to see here in the US, and aside from laying down new track every 10 years, and brightline becoming a private version of amtrak, it stands to reason that you're not gonna have much go through any town. it is more likely you will find more road construction than rail.

    I want to challenge you on couplets being safer for pedestrians! 🙂
    If your streets are flat, straight, and have priority timed traffic lights, then there's nothing to slow down vehicles-leading cars to treat the road like a highway. My community is actually converting our couplet into two two-ways due to the impact speeding vehicles have had on noise, air quality, walkability, pedestrian safety, and ultimately commercial activity.
    If you want to keep the couplet but make it safer, perhaps consider adding curb extensions? Or narrow the lanes with parking/widened sidewalks/trees? 🤷‍♂

    I work for the German Rail and one of my stations is right there where two lines meet and it has such a slingshot curve. It was build in war times and can handle even the heaviest trains (guess why...) but only at 40km/h. However, it is regularly used but only few times the day. One generally avoids sudden bents, always curve in and out smoothly (the entrance of the station). 1.25% is considered the maximum slope for main tracks (due to heavy cargo trains - they can barely make it. My other station has 1.2% and if they must stop, they might break down and need an assistant engine. We in Germany usually have only one engine per train but our trains are not as long and not as heavy as in the states).

    That curve at the junction looked far too small to me, so I quickly found a minimum curve speed calculator for trains online to use as a guideline.
    The equation it gave is r = v^2/[g*tan(theta)], r being the radius of the curve, v being the maximum velocity of the train, g being gravity, and theta being the bank angle of the track. I believe the same calculation is used for highway curves, but trains can only handle far shallower bank angles. For the calculation, I used the 115m shown when making the curve as the radius (which is actually higher than the radius so this is an over estimation of velocity), and bank angles of 1 degree and 10 degrees
    on such a 115m radius curve, a 1 degree bank gives a max velocity of 4.4 km/h (2.7 mph), and a ten degree bank gives 14 km/h (8.7 mph). That is far, far too small a curve, as trains get most of their efficiency by staying at speed and not spending energy on braking and accelerating unless absolutely necessary

    I think adding some homes on the other side of the road closest to the beach might be a cool addition, I don't know what its like on the Great Lakes but at least along the West coast you see lots of homes' back yards facing the ocean, with entrances to the beach being where roads go perpendicular to the ocean between homes. Considering Sheila's willingness to develop all the inland forested, I don't see why she would be unwilling to encroach onto the beach a bit more for the sake of making more money from that beachfront real estate, unless she has a real affinity for preserving specifically beaches LOL. The build looks great regardless!

    Phil, to answer your question I think the junction at 32:25 is way too tight with far too much slowdown. You could make a much wider bend before the bridge and its associated bank to allow high speed to be maintained. It would result in another grade crossing but to be fair it's impossible to avoid *all* grade crossings at *all* times without unreasonably high cost.
    As pointed out elsewhere the rail company could pay for a longer bridge or extended road bank above the tracks if the need for it justifies the expense.

    32:27 that curve is probably way too tight, it might not be a problem depending on if the cargo is not time-sensitive (because the trains would need to take this at a very low speed to not derail)
    also the elevated sections of track aren't all that bad, viaducts like that are all over the place, tho they're certainly more expensive than level railway; where you're more likely to see viaducts tens of kilometers long is in rapid transit

    Changing the rail line to cross that neighbourhood at grade is very good imo. With the hard turn, its definitely something you could see, but it would lower the track speed for that corner by quite a lot so they'd probably just extend the bridge if they had money for it. I wouldn't say that if you leave it as is it would be wrong, because theres definitely some spots where youll see turns that tight on parts of the east coast where space is at a premium, but if you change it that would also be good and probably a bit more realistic for an area like MC.

    Hey Phil, I hope you'll see this comment because I have a reccomendation for your waterfront builds.
    If you look at some interesting places with beachfront property (Virginia beach VA, Crescent Beach FL, etc) there is usually never a road between the primary beachfront property and the actual beach. The roads are offset from the coastline to allow properties built towards the beach, but retain the actual beachfront. In the cresent beach example its actually super interesting because there is a really large protected dune ecosystem between the buildings and the beach and you'll see all the condo complexes build a long boardwalk type path over and across this zone to link their property to the beach.
    Might be interesting to look at :)
    Thanks!

    To put some numbers on the severity of that one particular rail curve, the freight locomotive in C:S2 is based on the General Electric/Wabtec 'Evolution Series' locomotive. The manufacturer advises the minimum curve radius for locomotives of this type is 273 ft (or 21 degrees of curvature). In reality, curvature would be limited even further by long train cars not present in C:S2, like auto carriers which need a curve of 350 feet radius or bigger! The construction UI says the diameter of that curve was around 120 meters. So, radius of 60 meters, or about 200 feet. So, while my eyes say that's too tight, the math agrees-make that curve bigger!

    41:03 If you ever want to place a radio mast or telecom tower in the middle of a city, you could put it right next to a police station. Idk about how it's done in the US but here in France police stations (and gendarmeries) usually have a gigantic radio mast for whatever reason (to communicate with units on the field or other emergency services, I guess), so it probably would not look too much out of place.

    you have a knack for creating some truly nightmare intersections i would hate to drive through, especially as part of a daily commute. like that intersection group near the post office. that reminds me of a bundle of intersections on my commute where it opens up into a main road which has far greater priority over the collector, so the light is way longer for it, but there's a close intersection in front of the collector which extremely frequently traps cars within the intersection that are expecting to be able to clear it, which is double hard to tell because there's a crest just after the intersection so you can't see if you'll get trapped in the intersection until you're basically on top of it. basically. intersections that are too close together, have a crest right after them, or have extremely sharp angles to navigate around or which make a long sweeping curve through the middle due to a curved connection vastly extending the intersection zone, are all nightmares and extremely dangerous for cars and peds. simplifying an intersection as much as possible for maximum safety is a top priority to me. unless it's some super special kind like times square where looks are more important and all types of traffic take a backseat with reduced speeds, flow chance, and such. pretty much i'd mostly avoid what i call "fancy grids" where they connect at weird angles in order to prevent what i'd also like to call "times square spam" which you seem to specialize in quite heavily :p. it's also partially from my experience as a hobbyist street scrapper who goes out on trash nights and picks up metal junk people put by the road to turn in to a scrap yard the next day for some quick cash. navigating fancy grids in as clean a route as possible with minimal backtracking is basically impossible here. it's mostly curvy roads with dead ends and only very loosely a disconnected grid through the center. i have to backtrack for daysssss to check every street for scrap. makes me wanna tail a garbage truck one day to see how well they've optimized the route so i can just copy that. i feel it also greatly interferes with safety in terms of emergency service response cuz they have to navigate all these weird twisty turny spaghetti ass roads to get anywhere in the neighborhood. clean grids just make everything easier for everyone tbh. boring yes. but oh so lovely. can easily see all the way down each street both ways for quick scrapping. quick response times. visiting friends and family not getting lost. etc. ahhhh. the dream. anyways. love your builds. so pretty uwu.

      Think it will be in the heart of the community; he clearly defined a town center around the station and other city services. And also, at least to me, it’s pretty clear that town is going to be expanded so once that happens there will be no doubt that the station is in the center of the community. Just wait, it’ll grow organically.

    That's a really tight curve for a passenger train. I would have sennt the track across the road before the bridge, not under the bridge. The rest of the track layout is great.
    Another thing, Your texture pack plays really well into keeping cliff faces in the cuts that are being made for the tracks, so I would have kept those in, or at least some. Think of it as a cost reduction measure. Don't blast more rock than you need to and so forth.

    Trains!
    Phil I have thoughts on trains for you.
    - The radius of curvature of track depends on the tracks purpose, similar to roads. Mainline track should be fast and gentle curves. Yards are the equivalent of parking lots and need slow track and can be tightly curved. The tight turn that you made is likely not fit for it's purpose. It would cause delays on a busy network because it the trains have to slow down and slowing down / accelerating takes a long time.
    - Trains have a minimum turn radius. Longer cars require larger turns.
    - Trains can derail if there is too much tension in the train on a large (angle between entrance and exit) curve. The cars can get pulled off the track to the center of the curve.
    And one final thing (that you probably already know because you did this professionally). It looks like you could be planning for transit too late in your process. The area around your transit (and cargo) stations is some of the most valuable real estate in your city. Or depending on the story for your city, the city could be built around the old railroad/harbor.

    Three ideas: suggest flipping the post office around so it is on the back half of the block. It's mostly a logistics centre anyway. It can be just behind main street (on the same block) which will provide more valuable real estate for commercial frontage interests.
    Also BTW, the new development is a long way away from Chuckle's shuttle. With the election loss perhaps its time to focus on his core strengths and grow the brand and the business. Maybe he needs a new branch in the new community! Perhaps some small lane in the back of the community was named King Lane (King LAME) as a small dig. Oh look, there already is one near the beach front! He wears that insult as a badge of pride, and most vehicle depots hide behind the community in laneways anyway.
    Third idea: There is already a natural spit of land right at the edge of the peninsula. This could very easily be extended into a Groyne (beach preserving structure to prevent sand from eroding along the beach) which will help protect these large but exposed beach fronts.

    Hello I really like your build.
    Regarding your rail I'm from Germany so I cant really say how it is in the US but to me the curve into the mainline seems way to tight.
    Any train going trough there would have to do so at walking pace costing valuble minutes that the mainline is blocked.
    Also generally atleast here in Germany on new build lines the train company tries to have the least amount of at grade crossing possible to avoid any potential accidants with cars.
    So from my understanding it would totally make sense to keep the elevated section inside the city where the parks was and then drop down to ground level.
    This would potentially also get more goodwill form the residents towards the mining company.
    For newly build lines these days speed is also more heavily weighted against just cost reductions from stictly following the landscape, so if it would reduce the amount of slopes or reduce their grade its not uncommon to see more and longer bridges/tunnels.
    And an general tip 2% grade is usally the maximum you should go for.
    At 2% most freight allready would need addational hauling power just for that segment.
    And anything over 2.5% is bassicly unfeasible for freight running, from an economic standpoint at least. Tho that might be diffrent in the US.

One thing I noticed that may warrant a correction is at 29:49 on Rosewood Highway just before the bridge it seems like its a bit to sharp or a curve right after the bridge segment. should be a bit more straighter after bridge and a nice subtle curve for a highway.

    One thing that feels a bit strange about city services still is how they generally only have one connection to a road/street. Like, all of the Post Offices that I've been to in my city have a customer parking lot accessible from one street, and a delivery vehicle lot behind it connected to either the perpendicular street or sometimes even weirder things like the opposite side of a trapezoid or the base of a triangle. I wish CS2 had more assets that behaved like that, with service vehicles using one connection and the public using a different one...

    I loved the bit you did at the beginning, but I must say that one way couplets don't always function in the service of pedestrian safety. In real like (at least in US) one way roads typically encourage people to go faster down the street.
