From what I remember of Duran, he did not completely disappear. Zeratul found him on a distant moon somewhere, and it was he who discovered Duran's plan to create the Zerg-Protoss hybrids. Duran seems to reveal that he has been waiting many years (milennia, since he calls Zeratul "young") to finally put his plan into action. What effect this has in SCII, I don't know, having never played it.
Yeah, they retconned some things. For example, the two Protoss Executors in Episodes III and IV of the campaign are supposed to be faceless characters like the other player characters. However, the episode III executor was retconned to be Artanis in the "The Story So Far" article, and Ep VI's executor could be Selendis, although she isn't confirmed.
It actually was completely explained in Hots 1. Narud= Duran backwards. 2. Duran started the hybrid idea and tests. 3. Narud pretty much perfected the hybrid. 4. Duran says he serves a very powerfull being. 5. Narud is pretty much the apprentice of Amon and is gonna be the main focus of "Legacy of The Void"
if you care play the game, is survival of the fittest just with a lot of predicable plot twists in form of betrayals (since every faction wants absolute control without competition but cant face others alone) in SC2 kerrigan goes super sayain for no reason and suddenly is the good guy saving the universe, somehow...
This was an awful summary; I've seen better in less time. The narrator goes out of his way to make the story seem *more* convoluted in a failed attempt to come across as humorous.
It's moderately amusing. The hate seems more mindless nerd rage than based in anything remotely grounded in logic/fact. Try getting out of the house sometime; might dislodge the broom shoved up your ass...
the entire UED campaign is missing the majority of the Kerrigan campaign is missing there are 6 campaigns 2 are missing so this isn't actually covering everything at all, outline, or whatever
I liked it, and recommended it. All the jokes and references just dumb down story so that *gasp* people who havent played it can get the point without being bogged down in details, or people who have played it who DO know what is going on can just be reminded of the basics.
As someone who's never played the game, I got the gist of it from this summary pretty well. Considering I've only fanboyed the esport games, I think it worked okay.
This was totally useless in trying to refresh my memory of the StarCraft story. Half of the narration was written specifically to lead in to lame jokes and references rather than to summarize the story. I also don't remember the story being as confusing as this video makes it sound. The way this video nonchalantly breezes over introduction of important characters (not to mention entire races) long past the point in the story where they become important makes it extremely difficult to follow. Poorly executed, IGN.
gotta agree. Funnily enough, before checking this one, i watched a 2 min video wiht way lower production quality that did a far superior job when it came to helping remember the story. This one the other hand, its just some lame joke pandering confusing video.
I don't know what Kerrigan really is, but I really wanna be one. She looks badass, she's extremely powerful plus she has millions of pet Zergs. That's just awesome!
actually DTs use the same Arm-blades that Zealots do, not just the scythe thingy from SC2 that video at 3:26 was from the protoss section of SC brood war.
@crusadurus some of the SC2 footage better explains what happened in SC1 than what's available from the SC1 campaigns. Kerrigan disappeared into space, which he did mention, Arcturus Mengsk became emprorer when the confederacy falls, which he did mention, and raynor became a vigilante-space pirate of sorts, rebelling against Mengsk and his new dominion (unsuccessfully for years, until SC2).
Yes, something like 2 days ago. Mindblowing revelation...and it's amazing how well that name reversal trick works. (That said, Koveras is a little to blatant in Baldur's Gate 1, whereas Blizzard was actually being subtle as well as clever.) Changing the race helped a lot, I'd say, especially since those looking out for name reversals would've noticed it back in WoL where we thought Narud was just Valerian's science guy...clearly unrelated, and thus dismissed as coincidence. And by HotS when we find out he's a shapeshifter and thus simple matters like skin tone are completely irrelevant to identifying him, we've forgotten the reversed name because it's just a coincidence.
He isn't. That is a trick attempt by Blizzard to think that Duran has been found. Plus you don't even see Narud die or the zerg say they''ve found a body.
@AlmightyMetro both, combined is 80 bucks and you'll get starcraft, starcraft broodwar (starcraft expansion) and starcraft 2. You can get this at target, just look in the PC isle of the video game section
@GridAlienProduction According to the game's representation, all cerebrates are giant worm-like creatures that lay in a crescent shape, while in close proximity to their main brood. The game shows them to be about the size of your average spawning pool, though if shown, at all, in the SC II trilogy, they might take a new shape as things are updated.
petru bartalis Well, I love their games. Except for WoW and HoTS, which I don't particularly like. And making SC2 a 3 part game was a bad idea. Not to mention a very weak Diablo 3 in terms of story, character development, dungeons... I don't know why they can't create a new, great franchise and keep milking the old ones. I think after the SC2 LotV I will stop buying their games. And wait for something more original.
@PieisDaBest1 The problem is, that Starcraft 2 is divided into 3 games (or 1 game + 2 expansions possibly). The first one is the Wings of liberty, which is from the Terran POV and ***SPOILER ALERT*** when you have finished the game and have taken out the zerg at char, it says something like "Find out about the destination of the zerg on the next chapter of the Starcraft 2 trilogy, CHAPTER NAME *** SPOILERS END *** Which would suggest that the next chapter is from the zerg POV.
damn thats the best review eva :)))).. amount of humor here.. the man who made this should recieve million pay check and work for comedy review or something.
@Ncs666 *SPOILER ALERT* :) DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT TO BE SUPRISED!! They include it. Although, Duran is not directly included, only the hybrids, which is kinda the climaxs of the game. The Hybrids do talk about their "creator" but that can be both the Xel'Naga and Duran :)
This was so funny ! It makes a lot of references to nowhere stuffs... Anyway, IGN's borderlands video was funny too. I hope they will make one as funny for Diablo !
+Hubertus That was an exceptional come back my friend, If I had an award beside me right now and you were in my presence I would give you the award in honor of your creativity of come backs. You are the sacred lord of come backs, cheers
@Gladinplate It probably will. With Nova's appearance in SC2, it's a great time to give her a debut, and have Starcraft: Ghost be released later to let the player in on her history or other duties. That's just what I think ^^
@clampfan101 You know that part was a hint to starcraft: ghost . (The sequence seen there is from the ghost trailer btw) But if you haven't noticed yet, it has been canceled and last time I checked blizzard forgot to finish it. :rolleyez:
@jorumpl Kerrigan didn't turn back completley to a human form but she does get back her self control and humanity in a sense but i think that she will still have the psionic control over at least part of the zerg and "force" you to fight another overmind probably. im not 100% sure on anything they will do but this is just a guess cuz she still has some zerg features when she was turned human
@kleash Another thing.. Blizz wanted to make the sc2 campaign playable to everyone, if you played the first game or not. So they didn't include too much old stuff
this wasent my first game of all time but it was my first strategy game. and its been a great thing that they didint let us down on sc2. no doubt one of the best games of all time
The answer depends on whether you want to believe Starcraft I or II to tell you what the Overmind's motivations were. In One, the Overmind says that he created Kerrigan so that the Zerg can use psionic powers to level the playing field with the protoss. (I don't think he needed help commanding the swarm, the cerebrates were perfectly capable of that) In II, he says that he created her so that she could take control of the swarm, because if he remained alive the Zerg would become Amon's slaves.
@TheEzRein There's gonna be two more expansions to this game (Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void) maybe we'll find out then. Whenever they come out.
@tallguy781 It was never released, and was going to be for the X-Box. it was dropped in the light of the 360 coming out, since they thought they wouldn't sell any of it because everyone would be moving to Nex-Gen and no one would play an original a X-Box title anymore.
Ok if you started playing Starcraft II & after the 2nd mission (getting the alien artifact) & hear all this talk about the past wanted to know the story of the first starcraft but didn't want to play it if thats close to you, this video will help a little bit it will tell you the key points you are wondering about, and allot of stuff that will probably confuse you like me i say look for a longer explanation this is only good if you don't really care about the story but want to know what it was
Valerian Mengsk owns the Moebius Foundation alongside with Narud, you can read it everywhere, duh. And yes, a couple years ago, a guy from Blizzard, when answering if we were going to see Duran in HotS, he replied that "You totally saw him already at WoL" ...
@TheTron56 nah you never kill duran. and the secret mission you just find out about the protoss/zerg hybrid thingy. Durans in that mission but you dont off him
@JackTarJakst3R A lot of people do. And of course she's got a personality, there are whole books centred around the character detailing it, she's actually a pretty well worked out character with a lot more dimension than you will find in most media. She's not the cardboard 'Ohh, I'm evil wanna kill you all, muahahah' type of character, she's been given a history, a reason to be evil, motivations, and her own explanations behind it.
Great overview about all SC :) But about the zerg, they never wanted to assimilate with the protoss in the first place, they just wanted all the galaxy's races combined with theirs into 1 so that they will prove their brothers they are the superior sons of the Xel'Naga. However, the protoss always got in their way and stopped them, so when they found out where the protoss lived they pretty much wiped them out, almost. still you did a great job introducing newer audience to SC 2, so GJ :) 5/5
Possibly because in Broodwar there was a bonus mission, which I forget the parameters required to get it, where Duran is making a hybrid and Zeratul goes to it and I believe kills him, or he wasn't there and we have yet to find him again.
@telubreton Mensk is the reason Kerrigan turned into "the queen bitch of the universe" if it never happened Kerrigan would never have killed a lot of the heroes in SC1, so if anything Raynor is the good guy here.
@mancamiatipoola Well, gameplay wise, I admit that it's pretty darn good, and now I'm unable to go back to SC1. But as far as the campaign go, it's not as awesome as they said it would be. "It will be totally non-linear, and your choices ingame will change Raynor in the future!" Well, you only get to "choose" stuff at the end of an arc, and you can still chose to do or not to do some missions, but what's the point IF YOU HAVE TO DO THEM ALL TO GET THE ACHEIVEMENTS ANYWAY?
@kleash Yah, he was supposed to kill Kerrigan. For what she did to Fenix, to the rest of the protoss and terrans. And to him. But then *Spoiler Alert* he found a way to bring her back. So technically he killed The Queen Of Blades, which is the bad guy. And saved Kerrigan, who's good. But we don't know everything yet, since Hots haven't been released yet.
Duke versus Stukov (and DuGalle) versus Raynor versus Arcturus versus Kerrigan versus Duran versus Alan Schezar. The Terrans fight each other more than they do Protoss and Zerg!
"Terrans are really into video conferencing, and they call each other a lot."
Man that's relevant in 2020.
The marine in that bunker had worse accuracy than a storm trooper.
This did not help at all
Yeah, they retconned some things.
It actually was completely explained in Hots
I just finished the Terran campaign in Starcraft 1. First time playing it in 12 years, that game still kicks ass.
I.DIDN'T.UNDERSTAND.A.THING
if you care play the game, is survival of the fittest just with a lot of predicable plot twists in form of betrayals (since every faction wants absolute control without competition but cant face others alone) in SC2 kerrigan goes super sayain for no reason and suddenly is the good guy saving the universe, somehow...
What I think this is amazing. Both funny and informative! I'm waiting for the SC2 one
"compatible video conference" xD
Lol
This was an awful summary; I've seen better in less time. The narrator goes out of his way to make the story seem *more* convoluted in a failed attempt to come across as humorous.
It's moderately amusing. The hate seems more mindless nerd rage than based in anything remotely grounded in logic/fact.
Try getting out of the house sometime; might dislodge the broom shoved up your ass...
Care to share the better summary you are talking about?
It's intended to be amusing, yeesh chill your roll.
Sarah Kerrigan as Nancy Kerrigan... that made my day. Thanks for these IGN and keep them up!
Thank you for this! I never played Starcraft, but I like the characters in HotS I just decided to get into Starcraft II tonight.
I've just been fanboying the esport champioships, and wanted to know the backstory of the game. I think I got the gist from this video.
thanks for the recap that brings back memories. The vdeo quality really shows its age now but it still looks great
Hahahaha. The Duran Duran stuff killed me. The ending was the best. hahahaha
the entire UED campaign is missing
the majority of the Kerrigan campaign is missing
there are 6 campaigns
2 are missing
so this isn't actually covering everything at all, outline, or whatever
+Braxium This came out in 2010 chill
+braedon richardson these campaigns came out back in 1997-98 bro
i was walking about the movie. But i know. I've been a good starcraft fan since i can remember. Korshala Adun.
Zaaaaaaaaasz!!
Nice review, love the SC2 graphic inputs too!
I love how he sayid "ZAAAAASZ"
I almost died at that part haha
That made me giggle so much :) You legend for putting it together
LOL I was looking for some more serious video but still nice
HILARIOUS! , especially the video conferencing thing. I'm glad i watched this because I don't remember the story from sc1 and never played brood wars.
The terrans are just space americans
That actually wasn't a bad overview at all for being like 5 minutes long. Just got SC2 and I am lovin it bigtime.
crashes his ship into mr.eyeball lol
This was entertainingly enlightening. I love the references, I literally got all of them.
69/420 Too many shitty references and bad jokes
Fantastic comedic timing and video editing!
Narrator obviously never played and doesnt understand starcraft... he put too much importance on some things and too little on others.
+sexual harassment panda 5 mins bruh
never played starcraft before, and this saves going through every single mission to understand the plot
Yeah yeah. We all heard it before. Sc2 is bad Sc1 rulez. Give me a damn break nostalgiafags.
Vorteksio3 I didn't say anything about SC2 in my comment...
gotta agree.
Funnily enough, before checking this one, i watched a 2 min video wiht way lower production quality that did a far superior job when it came to helping remember the story. This one the other hand, its just some lame joke pandering confusing video.
link?
I don't know what Kerrigan really is, but I really wanna be one. She looks badass, she's extremely powerful plus she has millions of pet Zergs. That's just awesome!
those are zealots, not dark templars. 3:26
actually DTs use the same Arm-blades that Zealots do, not just the scythe thingy from SC2 that video at 3:26 was from the protoss section of SC brood war.
@crusadurus some of the SC2 footage better explains what happened in SC1 than what's available from the SC1 campaigns. did we ever stop to think that narud from HOTs is duran
Yes, something like 2 days ago. Mindblowing revelation...and it's amazing how well that name reversal trick works. was any of that sarcasm
blusgaming picks Actually, no. It was a genuine compliment to Blizzard.
He isn't. That is a trick attempt by Blizzard to think that Duran has been found. Plus you don't even see Narud die or the zerg say they''ve found a body.
Krycheck but keep in mind Narud is a shapeshifter, so he could've been with the Zerg all along.
@AlmightyMetro both, combined is 80 bucks and you'll get starcraft, starcraft broodwar (starcraft expansion) and starcraft 2. You can get this at target, just look in the PC isle of the video game section
The narrators dialogue was the most disappointed thing since my son...
Sleeper reborn, lmao.
Gothic 1 reference. xD
Or the book Dune :P
MrAtrion thats boolshtt they created something new they didnt inspired from other creations
petru bartalis
People say the same thing about WarCraft, but it's a lie.
MrAtrion yeah i agree at last someone not so anti blizzard
petru bartalis
Well, I love their games. Except for WoW and HoTS, which I don't particularly like. And making SC2 a 3 part game was a bad idea. The way you make fun about their conferences is just awesome!
am i the only one who watches these and realizes that i have retained absolutely nothing?
Maybe you're just dense? I think I got the basic idea of the storyline.
the BEST starcraft summary ever!!!
can someone please explain why my husband is addicted to this game? it's breakin my heart
+ebony lee because of the story (campaing), cinematographyc scenes, and also it's a really, really big universe to learn
cuz dis game is da baws
This game is one that has a super-detailed history and fantastic plotline. the game itself is also very fun and extraordinary for people playing it
+ebony lee prob coz the story. Maybe the relationship between Jim Raynor and Kerrigan :)
there are tons of bugs, lasers and explositions
my mind has been blown after 5 minutes of watching this video, and learning about starcraft for the first time
Clearly comedy doesn't suit this guy. Stop trying to be funny and just explain the story a little bit better.
@PieisDaBest1 The problem is, that Starcraft 2 is divided into 3 games (or 1 game + 2 expansions possibly). The first one is the Wings of liberty, which is from the Terran POV and
***SPOILER ALERT***
when you have finished the game and have taken out the zerg at char, it says something like "Find out about the destination of the zerg on the next chapter of the Starcraft 2 trilogy, CHAPTER NAME
*** SPOILERS END ***
Which would suggest that the next chapter is from the zerg POV.
psychic KUNG-FU!
damn thats the best review eva :)))).. amount of humor here.. the man who made this should recieve million pay check and work for comedy review or something.
ZAAAAAAAAAAASZ
@Ncs666
*SPOILER ALERT* :) DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT TO BE SUPRISED!!
They include it. Although, Duran is not directly included, only the hybrids, which is kinda the climaxs of the game. The Hybrids do talk about their "creator" but that can be both the Xel'Naga and Duran :)
the best game
This was so funny ! It makes a lot of references to nowhere stuffs... Anyway, IGN's borderlands video was funny too. I hope they will make one as funny for Diablo !
This was the worst way anyone could have ever explained this story....ever...I hope you got fired.
IGN stands for...?
i also wonder why this mumbling guy ever landed a job as a narrator . i cant make out what he was saying
*****
No. Ignorance.
"Kerrigan gets stranded in a Zerg rush."
I lol'd heartily.
The terrible attempts at humor take away from the entire point of the video
@566spartandude Google StarCraft Ghost. Was suppose to be a third person game based on a ghost named Nova who is seen @ 2:15 in the video.
starcraft 2 story in 2 words!
Its shit
michaelsloanedog And you post this because?
michaelsloanedog "In your opinion"
michaelsloanedog Like your mother ?
+Hubertus That was an exceptional come back my friend, If I had an award beside me right now and you were in my presence I would give you the award in honor of your creativity of come backs. You are the sacred lord of come backs, cheers
What do you expect from a 12 year old?
@Gladinplate It probably will. With Nova's appearance in SC2, it's a great time to give her a debut, and have Starcraft: Ghost be released later to let the player in on her history or other duties. That's just what I think ^^
wow. This is great. Could you make a summary for starcraft II as well?
@clampfan101 You know that part was a hint to starcraft: ghost . (The sequence seen there is from the ghost trailer btw) But if you haven't noticed yet, it has been canceled and last time I checked blizzard forgot to finish it. :rolleyez:
5 minutes is still 4 and a half minutes longer than one needs.
@jorumpl
Kerrigan didn't turn back completley to a human form but she does get back her self control and humanity in a sense but i think that she will still have the psionic control over at least part of the zerg and "force" you to fight another overmind probably. im not 100% sure on anything they will do but this is just a guess cuz she still has some zerg features when she was turned human
"Ghosts are rly hot and interesting and should have their own game"
We got Covert OPS missions few years later atleast :D
Kerrigan looked so creepy on those video confs
@kleash Another thing.. Blizz wanted to make the sc2 campaign playable to everyone, if you played the first game or not. So they didn't include too much old stuff
@posslum510 The first 6 are from the protoss brood war ending, and the final 3 are from the zerg broodwar ending.
@lilmisho It's a movie called "Starship Troopers", if I remember right. Great movie.
Best Game Of All Time. And the first game i've played. (i'm 17)
(im 20) had the nintendo 64 game, threw it out 2 years ago along with nintendo, find out a month ago it is worth around $200
Elite Forges Blarg
this wasent my first game of all time but it was my first strategy game. and its been a great thing that they didint let us down on sc2. no doubt one of the best games of all time
The answer depends on whether you want to believe Starcraft I or II to tell you what the Overmind's motivations were.
Merry Christmas to you
Awesome narration skills!
"... they see all this happening and they're like ... REALLY??" :-)
@posslum510 I'm pretty sure I've seen all of those cut-scenes you mentioned.
This is a good explanation of SCI and Brood wars, Thanks for it :D
holy crap this is hilarius and informational. it tells me all i need to know about starcraft while making me laugh. "THIS SHALL NOT PASS"
Zeratul finds Duran. That's how he comes across the whole hybrid project in the first place.
@TheEzRein There's gonna be two more expansions to this game (Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void) maybe we'll find out then. Whenever they come out.
@tallguy781 It was never released, and was going to be for the X-Box. it was dropped in the light of the 360 coming out, since they thought they wouldn't sell any of it because everyone would be moving to Nex-Gen and no one would play an original a X-Box title anymore.
hahahaha this is the most confusing but hilarious 5 minute summary video in the series
amazing, only IGN can turn a thrilling in depth story into ,well this.
@JimTheJames there is a secret at the 'media blitz' mission (bottom right corner inside a science facility) and you find 'signs' of Duran (kind of)
Just bought starcraft 2 and so glad for this video, just wanted to get up to speed before I get lost in the campaign lol
Ok if you started playing Starcraft II & after the 2nd mission (getting the alien artifact) & hear all this talk about the past wanted to know the story of the first starcraft but didn't want to play it
if thats close to you, this video will help a little bit it will tell you the key points you are wondering about, and allot of stuff that will probably confuse you like me i say look for a longer explanation this is only good if you don't really care about the story but want to know what it was
Valerian Mengsk owns the Moebius Foundation alongside with Narud, you can read it everywhere, duh.
Great overview about all SC :)
But about the zerg, they never wanted to assimilate with the protoss in the first place, they just wanted all the galaxy's races combined with theirs into 1 so that they will prove their brothers they are the superior sons of the Xel'Naga.
However, the protoss always got in their way and stopped them, so when they found out where the protoss lived they pretty much wiped them out, almost.
still you did a great job introducing newer audience to SC 2, so GJ :)
5/5
Possibly because in Broodwar there was a bonus mission, which I forget the parameters required to get it, where Duran is making a hybrid and Zeratul goes to it and I believe kills him, or he wasn't there and we have yet to find him again.
Thanks for the summary. I've forgotten about that.
That was one of the funniest videos I have ever watched.
2:14 Heh, funny they say that now. Their wish was granted in 2016 with that Nova Corps DLC
@telubreton Mensk is the reason Kerrigan turned into "the queen bitch of the universe" if it never happened Kerrigan would never have killed a lot of the heroes in SC1, so if anything Raynor is the good guy here.
@Ranger123589 It's from the 1st Starship Troopers.
Starcraft in 5 mins
Jim Raynor : " aaah yeah, riight on , sounds fun , aaaah yeaah ,this is jimmy , riight on, soounds fun "
@Gorosbiggerbrother yeah. its impossible by the way. all you do is shoot it before it drops necromorphs on you and you win.
@mancamiatipoola
Well, gameplay wise, I admit that it's pretty darn good, and now I'm unable to go back to SC1.
But as far as the campaign go, it's not as awesome as they said it would be.
"It will be totally non-linear, and your choices ingame will change Raynor in the future!"
Well, you only get to "choose" stuff at the end of an arc, and you can still chose to do or not to do some missions, but what's the point IF YOU HAVE TO DO THEM ALL TO GET THE ACHEIVEMENTS ANYWAY?
@kleash Yah, he was supposed to kill Kerrigan. For what she did to Fenix, to the rest of the protoss and terrans. And to him. But then *Spoiler Alert* he found a way to bring her back. So technically he killed The Queen Of Blades, which is the bad guy. And saved Kerrigan, who's good. But we don't know everything yet, since Hots haven't been released yet.
For everyone wondering about Duran, there's a secret mission in SC1 that explains Duran and the hybrid reavers.
Duke versus Stukov (and DuGalle) versus Raynor versus Arcturus versus Kerrigan versus Duran versus Alan Schezar. The Terrans fight each other more than they do Protoss and Zerg!
@Liquiddragom It's definitely in SC1...I think it was after one of the first 2 or 3 missions as Protoss
