Fantastic video. I bought a used race board which is definitely higher. Needed to adjust my paddle by about 2". Looking at getting a single shaft so I need to size it just right. 5'10". Any suggestions on length? Getting older too. 😭
    Mainly paddling on flat lakes.
    Thanks again! 🤟

It’s really a personal choice. I have been using shorter paddles as it helps me get better leverage and power but it can be harder on the lower back. Longer paddles are generally more comfortable but can cause shoulder issues. I would get a semi adjustable paddle like our Kai Zen V2 or V3 so you can experiment with different lengths.

@@blueplanetsurf Thanks so much. I currently have a couple of adjustable paddles. I'm just trying to fine tune my ideal length. There are subtle nuances going slightly long or short as you point out. 🤔😃🤟
Your feedback is food for thought.

@@blueplanetsurf I really get your point about a longer paddle being easier on your back and a shorter paddle being easier on your shoulders. I played with the length quite a bit and narrowed it down to 200.5cm. I have slight shoulder and more significant back issues so I'm erring more to a longer paddle. Most of my paddling is on flat water. I can see how a shorter paddle would be better in surf. Thanks for all your expertise! 😃

Outstanding video and solid information. I've kayaked sit on top kayaks for 15 plus years but am brand new to the awesome SUP world. I purchased a SUP/kayak hybrid for fishing and deploying shark baits. I do have a kayak style 260 cm paddle ordered for when I am sitting and paddling. The board came with the stock, adjustable SUP paddle. For fishing and recreational purposes what size SUP fixed height paddle would you recommend when I'm ready to move to a fixed paddle? I'm 6'1" and around 210 lbs on a 12 foot Vibe Maverick 120. Thanks in advance. Subbed! 🤙

A good length for your type of use is about 6-8" over your head (paddle length of about 110% of your height). Many of us are using shorter and shorter paddles, personally, I'm 6'2 and use a 79" paddle (5" over my head) for cruising and racing and find a shorter paddle is easier on my shoulders and allows for more powerful acceleration. You also need to take board volume and thickness into account, the higher you are raised up off the water level, the longer your paddle should be proportionately, I hope that makes sense. We made a video about this years ago but its totally outdated now, so this is a good topic for a new video, thanks for the question.

Adam, for maximum all around performance we do recommend paddlers invest in carbon.

blueplanetsurf Hi when im paddling into waves i can hear the paddle stressing and making a cracking sound is this due to my bad paddling technique the paddle is a naish HELE SERIES allround/cruising

Hi Adam, yes paddles can break from poor technique and they usually break a few strands at a time and then can fail suddenly for seemingly no good reason. If you can hear cracking sounds it's probably time to replace your paddle. Check out this video that will help you accelerate more quickly, catch more waves, break less paddles and put less strain on your body: ua-cam.com/video/bOXpFqhh5HA/v-deo.html

Most reputable brands will replace paddles that break within one year of purchase as long as the carbonshaft was not weakened by an impact or the like.

I use the same length for foiling as for SUP surfing- about head high. Aloha, Robert
