The video was very well produced, and offers clear explanations of what to look for in a first SUP and beyond. I know a bit about surfboard and windsurf shapes, but am new to SUP. All of my past knowledge, while handy, was totally unnecessary. On balance (forgive pun), very easy to understand. Thanks for putting this up for the SUP'ing public. Cheers.
Kevin, great job. Mahalo nui loa. Had stroke 5 years ago and been struggling to get back in water. Your video has helped me get back into water and now paddling in surf 1-2 days a week.
man, I feel like I am a expert on SUP boards now. If only that would bear out on the waves! Excellent exposition on the world of SUP types and suitability.
Thank you so much for the video, you gave me a lot to think about. I'm in Northern Idaho and will be using my SUP for lakes and river shores to keep up with friends in Kayaks. This will be my first board and I'm super new to SUP, but I can't wait! I don't have the space to store a board so I think I will be forced to get an inflatable board. Thanks again!
What a god send, thanks for this video. It has helped me immensely and I know i'll be more confident buying my first board in the next week. Tenk yu tru from Papua New Guinea.
Great, glad to hear that Kelsey. Please check out Canadian Blue Planet distributors when you are ready to buy a board: blueplanetsurf.com/regions/#dealers-canada
Such a great wealth of knowledge. Not a wasted minute in this video. Thank you, Kevin! We took our first lesson today, we will rent until we move. But after that, this video will be invaluable to helping us get our own boards.
First video I've found which actually explains board physics instead of just praising racing boards. Very helpful! Now I know that for few-hour weekend activities fat board with round ends actually advantageous, since you don't need to balance it as much and speed is not a concern anyway.
Very informative!!!! Most information I have come across so for about what you need to know about choosing a board just explains that you’ll need to know what you’ll be doing on the board, your height/weight and experience level that’s pretty much it and leaves it at that. It doesn’t explain how to choose a board from there using that information.
An incredibly informative and useful video. Today was my very first day SUPing and it was... interesting. I had done lots of research as to the type of board I should eventually get but I was focusing a lot on board thickness vs board volume. This video - and the volume diagram - was extremely helpful. Thank you so much for posting.
Hi James, yes board thickness is simply a measurement at one point of the board and does not give you much information about volume distribution. Good to hear the video was informative! 🤙🏼
I guess I need lots of practice. I am a beginner with a volume requirement range of 235-321 according to your chart. I am 5'8" so the weight is plumpness! I purchased a Red Paddle 12'6" Sport that has a volume rating of 350L. It is thirty inches wide and I am challenged. I can stay on knees all day but standing up and, over I go. This model has the side battens too.
I sounds like the issue for you is the stability, not the volume. The board has plenty of volume for you but is probably too narrow to be standing comfortably on. We would probably recommend something around 36"-38" wide for someone your size and weight, like our Boss model: blueplanetsurf.com/products/108-x-36-boss-2017/ or even the 40" wide Sumo model if you want something very stable: blueplanetsurf.com/products/112-x-40-sumo-2016/ You can try to just tough it out and keep practicing. With enough grit, eventually your balance should improve enough to be able to stand on your 12'6 x 30" board.
Hi Blue Pitbull, iSUPs are good on lakes and rivers and for taking your dog, not so much in surf. We have no experience with Black Fin boards but they look decent on their website. It might be good to research unbiased reviews or stick with a well known brand. Most issues with iSUP's start a few years down the line when the board is or of warranty.
All our models and prices are shown on our website www.blueplanetsurf.com The boards shown in this video are our 2015 models, the ninja line was replaced with our pocket series, the 2019 Paradise model is available on our website, along with pricing and all our available models, see: www.blueplanetsurf.com/100-x-31-paradise-2019.html The price includes a board bag, free air cargo shipping in the US, and subsidized international shipping.
Hi there, I'm a bit lost... I would like to buy my first board, but I don't really understand how to choose the right one... I'm 163cm tall and weight about 51-53kg... I'm looking for all round board for use on lakes, calm rivers and small sea waves just for recreational purpose... All the boards I was looking at had so big volumes, so I have no idea how to choose or if I should look at kids boards 😅... I've already tried aquamarina fusion the older 10'4" (290l) model on the sea, but I struggled to go streight, maneuvering wasn't easy and with width 30" I really felt my legs afterwards... on the other hand aqua marina super trip 12'2" x 32" (400l) was so much easier to handle for me, but I felt it's just too big even if I was with my daughter (+20kg)... could you please recommend a board or just dimensions - lenght, width, thicknes, volume, which could fit me? I really don't know and I would appreciate your help... Thank you very much...
We don’t sell inflatable boards, so if you are looking to buy an iSUP, best to contact a shop that does. For touring, something like our 11‘6 x 31 Polynesian Touribg board would work well for you:
+Oran Strong At our shop in Honolulu we have new boards starting at $599 all the way to $3000 or more for high performance race boards. Used boards start as low as $300. Don't choose a board on price though, demo some boards and choose one that works well for you. A cheap board that's not right for you is wasted money.
Thanks for the info bro. This video was perfect for a newbie trying to get into the sport. Do you deliver boards to San Diego or have any shops in Southern California that sell your boards?
+Paul Wolfe thank you for the comment. We currently don't have a BP dealer in Southern California but we do offer free air cargo shipping on Blue Planet boards at Blueplanetsurf.com
Yes, if built properly. It’s a renewable material that provides a nice flex pattern. It does turn brown if it gets wet so you have to make sure a board with bamboo veneer does not take on any water and keep it watertight
I’m looking to get a sup. I’m a beginner, but unsure what I should consider getting. I’m female. But 6 feet tall and about 200lbs. I’d be using it mostly in calm waters but the water sometimes can be wavy. Id love some suggestions. Thanks.
Hi Ocean Wilson, we always recommend trying a few boards before buying one. At our shop in Honolulu we offer free SUP clinics where you can demo boards and also a "try before you buy" rental credit. If you have a shop in your area that offers something similar, we highly recommend that as how stable a board you need is really dependent on your balance ability and comfort level on the water. That said, a good place to start would be a all-round board of around 10'6 x 34", like our Multi Tasker model. If you are only paddling flat water, you should also consider a longer, touring type model that will be faster and track (go straight) better, like our 11'6 x 31 Polynesian Touring model. Our brochure with an overview of our models is here: blueplanetsurf.com/news/blue-planet-surf-2018-brochure/
Like they recommend, try renting a few and see what you like. If you plan on doing mostly flat water paddling, check out a touring type board maybe in the 12'6 range. I am 6'3 and about 210lb and have an isup that is 12'6 x 32 wide. Sometimes I rent a 14' x 30ish for fun and these boards handle shop well and glide great. local shop point you in the right direction.
Great video! I've been riding shortboards on and off for 30 years +. I've never tried it but I want to get into surfing SUP's. Did some research but after watching this vid I'm thinking I want an even smaller board than I initially thought. Figure most of the time I will be surfing anything from knee high mush to shoulder high + (when I get better). I am 5'8" and 150 lbs and want something that I can maneuver well but that will paddle well (balance/speed). I know there will be a learning curve but I'll probably be doing this at least 2-3x per week. What dims would you recommend? Which of your guys boards in particular would you recommend? You have a shop in Maui? Thanks in advance!
Hi Rick, our main recommendation is to demo some boards first so you get an idea of how small a board you can balance on. You don't want a tiny board that is just a struggle as it will take you longer to learn the basics. You could go short and wide for better balance when you are starting out without giving up on too much maneuverability. One of our fun surf series models should work well for you: 9'4 x 33 Fun stick 9'2 x 32 Sweet Spot 8'8 x 31 Allgood For more details, visit: blueplanetsurf.com/?s=fun+surf+series We currently don't have a dealer on Maui but can ship boards by Young Brothers, no problem. Aloha!
Yes, boards like our Tuf Tech models (fiberglass with PC/ABS skin) are a great entry level choice, durable, light weight and inexpensive. Check this video where Kevin demonstrates how tough these boards are with a baseball bat: ua-cam.com/video/0bWLF3rQgWk/v-deo.html Roto Molded plastic boards are usually quite heavy and can work well as a entry level board if you don't need to transport them much, like if you can store it on a dock.
Yes you can carry additional people on board but more volume does not necessarily make the board more stable as having a lower center of gravity and being closer to the water surface makes it easier to balance.
blueplanetsurf, I am interested in stand - up paddleboarding. I only find inflatable ones on Amazon. Other than convenient storage, do the inflatable SUP's have any significant advantages over the non inflatable ones?
In a nutshell: Storage, convenience for traveling as well as not being prone to getting dinged are the biggest advantages of inflatables. Disadvantages are less performance due to flex and a round, soft rail with no taper. They are good in flat water but don’t compare well to hard boards in surf and waves. Inflating and deflating the board takes a while and the plastic material and glues used on inflatables eventually start breaking down, especially in hot climates, and iSUPs generally have a shorter life expectancy than epoxy boards.
My Alpha Sup inflatable board ...I purchased and only used twice is separating ...I need help from the manufacture...most probably an accidental flaw....please let me know how to proceed for help in this matter.
We don't sell iSUP's for this reason, they don't hold up well and blown out seams are common, especially if left in the sun. Contact the seller, most boards have a one year warranty.
+Griffin O'Connor We offer free air cargo shipping to the nearest major airport in the US on most SUP's on our website, check www.blueplanetsurf.com for details
Does Blue Planet sale inflatable SUP? Whats your opinion on these boards, can they replace hard boards completely, providing the same features but with a compact form and easy to move around?

Great video! I've been riding shortboards on and off for 30 years +. I've never tried it but I want to get into surfing SUP's. Are hard plastic board any good in your opinion? They seem like they might be able to take some abuse.
Yes, boards like our Tuf Tech models (fiberglass with PC/ABS skin) are a great entry level choice, durable, light weight and inexpensive. Check this video where Kevin demonstrates how tough these boards are with a baseball bat: ua-cam.com/video/0bWLF3rQgWk/v-deo.html
Roto Molded plastic boards are usually quite heavy and can work well as a entry level board if you don't need to transport them much, like if you can store it on a dock.
What kind of concave do I need on a 9’ recreational ?
You don't need concaves, in many cases, a flat bottom works better than concaves.
Thanks, Kevin ( I was missing the colour part. Can't overemphasise the importance of the colour! 😎😂). 🤙
😎 yes color is usually what makes or breaks the purchase but does not make the board any faster 🤣
What if your board volume is 325L but you're in need of 205 per weight. Would the 325 be good so you can have an extra person on your board?
Yes you can carry additional people on board but more volume does not necessarily make the board more stable as having a lower center of gravity and being closer to the water surface makes it easier to balance.
Very informative, thanks.

I think that's the better choice unless you don't have the space to store a board, then iSUP's make sense, or as a travel board.
Brilliantly explained, nice one bro 🤙🏻🏄🏼 uk
