    Biggest UK media cover up still: British Fishing industry sold a large % of its quotas in the l980s/90s to European states, eg Netherlands.
    Lot's of people made big money but they have now disappeared or are keeping a low profile.
    In other words: UK fishermen sold the family silver. But you now want to present yourselves as victims, which you are not.

    Update 30/04/2021:
    UK fleets will not have access to Norway's sub-Arctic seas, following the breakdown of UK-Norway negotiations
    The failure to reach a deal means Norwegian vessels will also lose access to UK waters in 2021. But one of the main species they catch is blue whiting, and a lot of that is caught in the first couple of months of the year which have already gone.
    UK vessels, on the other hand, fish throughout the year for cod.
    And as warmer sea temperatures push cod stocks further north, they cannot replace the cod they have been catching in Norwegian waters by fishing in UK waters instead.

    These fishermen don't seem to realise that quotas exist for a reason. As the video mentions a huge portion of the fish caught are exported to the EU to which the UK fishing industry is dependent as a market (unless they kind find other countries to export to).
      & I can't see how the fishing industry in the EU would look kindly on EU if there was no respons to increased quotas in the UK - so most likely tariffs or similar will be added unless they keep quotas to what the EU consider fair.
      So not only might the fishing industry end up as a bargaining chip with the EU they might also be sacrificed to appease the fishing industry within the EU.
      So hopefully the British will start eating more fish (or join NAFTA or similar).

      Studies on fishing populations off the coast of Canada seem to show that quotas actually end up harming the population. Limiting people to a certain amount encourages some bad behavior by people and takes the responsibility out of their hands. "The government says I can fish 50 per day, so 50 I will get!" Whereas if they had to rely on their own decisions, they may take a smaller number. The proof is in the pudding --- quotas are NOT helping!!

    The UK wants its fishing industry back? The Tories gave it to the French and Spanish for almost 50 years so asking for it back shouldn't be a problem! The EU fishing fleet has plenty of opportunities elsewhere; they have most of the Mediterranean at their behest; they have half the Baltic and the North Sea to dip into; they have all the Bay of Biscay and the Atlantic beyond if they want to be greedy. Their 'deals' are already robbing the West African countries of their fishing stocks; the EU has great fishing arrangements in the North Atlantic with Norway, the Faroes, Iceland and Greenland. It's ludicrous to think their fishing fleets will have to 'go short' for no one has mentioned that Ireland, a grateful beneficiary of EU funding, has the largest, most productive, least utilised EEZ anywhere! The EU shared fishing grounds are HUGE. France sadly has a reputation for starting international trouble it cannot then resolve; for starting fights like a schoolyard bully and then asking the EU to stick up for it. BTW I am a 'Remainer' ! ! ! Did you simple minded Brexiteers really expect a lying, clown of a criminal like Boris to work a deal ?

      I'll provide the other side of the argument. As stated, the EU has different laws set for different member states, meaning that some countries (it can be argued Belgium, Germany, and France being the main culprits) will be better off than others as they have such a huge amount of influence within the EU.
      Now that we have voted to leave the EU fishermen are hopeful that the government will start to look at our own industries (fishing, steel etc.) and what we can do to boost them, and in turn, our economy as we won't be as restrained as we would be within the EU. The changes might include not putting those dead fish to waste by throwing them overboard and so they get a bigger haul of fish to be sold. k thx bye xx

    • @masta43ify
      @masta43ify 7 років тому +3

      HOPE is the key word here if the tories still maintain a majority for the near-future we won't have a fishing industry. If they are willing to cut basic things that sustain our own populaces health and wellbeing, 1% of the GDP won't stand for very long.
      It's the same with farmers, they get large subsidies from the EU to function at affordable prices; yet decided that regulations are too mean.
      What the government wants us to be is a massive tax haven for rich, we're not returning to the 50s, steel plants in Wales have uprooted, there's no infrastructure for any sort of manufacturing; it will take DECADES to compete with the current market.
      And if you really think the British government had no "influence" in the EU you're blind, we had the most concessions out of any EU member state a large % of MEP to population and being cushy with the USA, as well as being a NATO founding member it let us wield so much influence over the EU.
      The simple fact of the matter is as the fisherman stated; "historically they have sent us down the river". They are not giving the fishermen a paddle up shit creek now or never; they will be used for a better deal as Tories do.

    • @hamish7972
      @hamish7972 7 років тому +1

      Well i'd of thought I was a nutter if I said this a year ago, but I think now that we are leaving, UKIP will hopefully get a couple of seats in upcoming by-elections as they are the ones with the plan which will be able to deliver what a lot of people are wanting.
      However by the looks of things right now the Tories are set to be pretty unstoppable with the amount of support that Theresa has managed to attract in recent months. On top of that, Jeremy Corbyn is the most uncharismatic person i'v ever seen and seems to be running Labour into the ground.
      On top of that, up here in Scotland we seem to have Nicola Sturgeon running riot and all she cares about is bloody independence. The thing is from my perspective she's gained more support than Sammond managed to for that going ahead as all the passionate remain voters for the EUref are digging their feet in and demanding that they stay in the EU, not realizing that our economy runs off of England. What people are failing to realise with SNP is that they will try at every opportunity to create an independent Scotland and are just using the EUref results as their basis for the campaign and ignoring the Leave voters, me being one of them.

    I hope the government doesn't screw over these fishermen.
    The common fisheries policy has been a disaster for the British fishing industry. The UK has Europe's richest and largest fishing grounds, grounds which historically British fishermen had largely to themselves. The common fisheries policy allowed huge factory fishing boats, from other European nations, to fish British waters with impunity.
    The quotas don't prevent over fishing, as you've just seen, the dead fish go back into the water, they've already been fished! A far better system that suits the needs of the fishermen and our fish stocks is required.

  • @peteratkin3788

    As an update to this:
    To a casual observer, you may think that Brexit is all about fishing. Boris Johnson claims that a major sticking point in Brexit negotiations with the EU is the issue of fishing rights. But, in truth, it's a convenient excuse as the Conservative government couldn't care less about fishing. However, deal or no deal, the fishing industry is going to struggle to sell their catch because of the new rules devised by the British government and in no way related to the EU, yet again.

    It does not work quiet like that , the fish don't know about borders and move around , lots of fish spawn in Dutch and Danish waters and move into the UK's when they have grown to a stage when they can be commercially and sustainably fished . If the UK insist that the Dutch and Danes can't fish them in British waters they will fish them earlier when they are small and in EU waters which will be bad for stocks and UK fishermen . Also the UK needs to sell the fish it's fleet catch even at the moment the country does not consume its catch but exports to the EU If the British deny access to it's waters to EU fishermen the EU will stop access for UK fish to it's market . This is the trouble with brexit it is to complex for it's supporters to grasp

      So like giving away over 100 miles of the North Sea to the continent. Because that's really going to help with fish stocks. If the EU were really so concerned about these numbers, they would give us our fishing waters back and allow us to turn away foreign fishers who didn't have a permit (like virtually all countries outside the EU do).

      The need for quotas is itself largely an inheritance from EU/EEC membership; allowing all fishermen access to UK waters (at the time the most lucrative in Europe) and then the very slow decision making in introducing regulation meant a rapid decline in fish stocks, and a compromise remedy which is quotas.
      Moreover, a large proportion of UK fish quotas are currently bought by foreign competitors.

    • @blaser80
      @blaser80 7 років тому +3

      The bigger travesty is the number of dead fish that were being thrown back into the sea due to the way the regulations were enforced, took decades to solve that problem. It actually hasn't helped to prevent over fishing at all though.

    U.K. fishermen are some of the strongest supporters of Brexit, alleging that the European Union’s control of what they catch and where hurts their trade. After Brexit, however, British fishermen could be able to catch hundreds of thousands of tons more fish.
    Fishing in the EU is highly regulated, and those regulations can be complex. Each member state has a specific quota for each species, and that quota changes in different parts of EU waters. Fishermen in some countries can also sail further into foreign territory than others.
    British fishermen say the limits set by the EU’s fisheries policy are unfair and need to change, but supporters argue that the quotas have maintained, and sometimes increased, fish stocks. And with 66 percent of British fish earmarked for export, U.K. fisherman will still want access to the EU market in any deal brokered.

    Honestly, it's depressing to see a historic industry declining from years of mismanagement, just to be given false promises about a better future when the problem wasn't the EU, it was bureaucracy not putting in the right effort. Now we just have a terrible British government messing up the British fishing industry instead of the EU doing it for us. Only difference is, with the EU we at least had a guarantee of sales and an understanding of how things worked. Hopefully it'll get easier for the fishing industry with time, but I doubt it.
    I'd happily blame these guys for voting to leave, but they were just desperate for the false promises and easily taken advantage of by Farage and Boris.
