I feel sorry for these fisherman but they really should’ve seen this coming. Did they really think Johnson would be able to get favorable fishing terms with the EU?? I realize they never would’ve expected him to allow European fisherman to continue fishing British waters but they should’ve known the chances of being able to continue with the same quotas was nil. There’s no way Johnson can hold his own against Europe’s top politicians when he has literally zero leverage created by Brexit. They sold the British people a pie in the sky that had no chance of becoming reality. Even if they had a worthy politician in office who was better in the art of negotiation they’d still have come out worse. 90% of all the promises they made when they were fighting for Brexit were/are complete BS that they knew weren’t possible. What’s scary is how bad their deals are going to be with the more powerful nations like the US and especially China. China is going to rake the UK over the coals and the US will end up with more favorable terms than before.

Why is it that the motivation for everything is greed for people like you? Oh they must be greedy! That was exactly mine though. While I am no expert in the fishing industry, it seems that the whole situation sounds like it is not just Brexit that is at fault for this business potentially failing. The amount of fishermen that voted for Brexit, with complete denial of reality! They were warned over and over again that they would be worse off and face high barriers to trade! How so many Professional fishermen could have so little knowledge about their industry still amazes me!
The fishing industry in the UK had come under the control of about 25 family businesses over the last 40 years and I think they were happy to throw the fishing community under the bus, so they could absorb the smaller fishing operations catch. Not sure if it was explained in the film but I think a significant problem is actually the quotas. the way that the UK distributed quotas was different to the EU and IIRC the British quotas were sold with the boats whereas the EU fishermen used an alternative system. There was a confidence in the industry, a lot of new vessels were getting built, fish stocks were on the increase. Sure, we could have used more quota, but more fish on the market usually resulted in poorer prices and often your no better off. I always felt it was our own Governments that caused the decline in the Industry, When days at sea and quotas were slashed they never supported the Industry like our European counterparts did. I was told by a Dutch fisherman that every time there was a quota cut or days at sea cut the EU put up funding to support the Industry. All the EU asked (to access the funding) was that the member country matched what funding the EU put up. Our Governments didnt, they never took it up, instead they took a bigger rebate to use in other areas. leaving many in the Industry to rack and ruin. - Our Government called it "market forces" Boris turns up at a few fishing ports and is hailed as the Messiah of the industry, Everyone knew he was a liar and rotten to the core, how they hell they fell for his crap I'll never know.

On our vegetable farm in Tasmania, Australia we were harvesting peas with mechanical harvesters in the 1980s.
The peas were harvested, shelled and the peas dumped into trucks, by the mechanical harvesters. Then sent to a factory for freezing.
What's that? The same guy who failed to research the impact of Brexit also failed to research the law around his business before spending £400k? Surely not.
Seems like the fish was not the only one short sighted
Only after Brexit, England understood how much money EUU was pouring into Britain's economy!
Goodbye EEU...hello hard times!
Brexit was the worse thing ever to happen to the UK.
As a UK born citizen, Bro I told many of them I WARNED NOT TO VOTE LEAVE they didnt want to hear it !. Only FOOLS will kick themselves out of the largest economic trading block on the planet. It's not that there where no warnings, one only had to take off the blinkers and put 2 and 2 together. As sad as it may sound I don't feel sorry for them. That is economic darwinism, you don't use the computer that sits between your ears and you are eleminiated from the economy. You bite the hand that feeds you, you end up starving. The only think that kept the british fishing industry viable was the EU market. Bojo used them as a means to an end, to become PM. Bojo sold you down the river.....
Can't blame the Tories for not keeping their election promise of turning the economy around. They delivered on that promise.

Ethnic nationalism was what Brexit was about... now they have to eat what they cooked
Ironic how 'take back our fishing waters' was one of the most important rallying cries of the Brexiteers - this is the reality of what that 'achievement' entailed.

@@TheBottleneckedGamer Some of them don't really seem like they're low on capital, people who own fish and chip shops and have the cash to splash on a six figure repair for a fishing boat have plenty capital. Honestly a lot of this is just going to be a rebalance, the young people have to suffer - but the people being hit by a lot of this are the people who scored lucky in their business when the economy was booming last century. They were never that bright, but earned large amounts of money regardless. They're taking a financial hit, and it's their own fault.
And these fishermen 'people' were just thinking of themselves, and with Brexit, we've also lost many of our rights! Hard to feel sorry for these people, when they were barely thinking of anyone else, but themselves.
they got suckered in and rolled, they must feel like idiots now !!!
You would think the cod fisherman would 4walise that the cod is not in British territorial waters and the others that most of the other stuff is only valuable when sold to the EU.
Nationalism really does make people stupid.
What on earth are you blabbering on about , nothing of what you wrote makes any fecking sense 🤔
@@Dusty357 learn to read Brexwit
@@Dusty357 He is talking about that cod is usually a cold-water fish, mostly found around Iceland and Norway and not the British islands. The EU also had quotas for EU vessels to catch cod in Norwegian and Icelandic waters, which obviously included bristish ships as well. Now the UK is cut of from those waters as well.
@@swanky_yuropean7514 take it from me a man who has worked at sea fishing for the last 30 years we have plenty of cod in English Scottish Irish waters , problem is fishing quotas , and foreign boats . Fishermen, being good brexiteers, decided to ignore the experts... Themselves... and went with what Bozo, Nigel, and JRM told them about their industry.... Sorry, but not sorry...
“I think the people in this country have had enough of experts... from organisations with acronyms saying that they know what is best and getting it consistently wrong." Michael Gove, Sky News, 3 June 2016
Such a tragedy and it can't be undone. We have reduced our negotiating power by going it alone and other countries know we are desperate to make deals on quotas etc. They have us over a barrel and inevitably we are worse of because of it. The Leave campaign and the Tories never cared about fishing.
It's difficult to sympathise with those who brought this upon us. Maybe they should have actually thought about what they were voting for and been more critical of the facts. How do they think we who voted remain feel? Are we really supposed to pity them now?
Fisherman were used for the emotional appeal for Brexit, worked very well on my dad. One thing is for sure Farage and Johnson won't be visiting any fishing communities, they will be chased outta town. Why are there no documentaries like this on mainstream UK tv, they always aired the Farage propaganda.....
Because the Tories own the media here
How's the E.U farmers protest going?
Has your Dad admitted he was wrong yet?
Well he done all his savings on a boat without checking the regulations which has meant his family are all stressed & having to work harder. He did this not Brexit

Not as simple as that. Labour had the chance to respect the vote but they stabbed voters in the back after being elected and the second referendum is how we ended up with johnson.
The Leave campaign told a LOT of lies in the months before the referendum. Senior politicians stated unequivocally that they would not leave the CU and SM, except they lied.
It's sad that these folks basically kneecapped themselves on fanciful positive thinking. This is why if you vote you need to do your research and make sure you aren't screwing yourself over. I feel bad for them but they made their decision and now they have to live with the consequences, in that regard they deserve all that's coming to them. Its like that old saying "You made your own bed, now sleep in it".
Not positive thinking. It was negative thinking.
They literally voted along their prejudice, xenophobia, greed, and English exceptionalism.

''We know exactly what we're voting for'' - they all said...
The fact it was only 2% in the vote makes it a tough pill to swallow. At best 48% weren't happy with it. Now it's probably more like 75% aren't happy with it.
Don't feel sorry for them. They voted for Brexit.
I was a fisherman for almost 40 years and could never understand why most guys wanted Brexit. Even our fishing "leaders" called it a "sea of opportunity" Most fish and shellfish caught by the UK fleet is exported to Europe. to me it seemed absurd to want to cut yourself off from your main market.
Leading up to the referendum on the EU, the guys were not doing great but they were doing ok. There was a confidence in the industry, a lot of new vessels were getting built, fish stocks were on the increase. Sure, we could have used more quota, but more fish on the market usually resulted in poorer prices and often your no better off.
I always felt it was our own Governments that caused the decline in the Industry,
When days at sea and quotas were slashed they never supported the Industry like our European counterparts did.
- Our Government called it "market forces"
Boris turns up at a few fishing ports and is hailed as the Messiah of the industry, Everyone knew he was a liar and rotten to the core, how they hell they fell for his crap I'll never know.
Nobody could ever accuse English fishermen of being remotely bright.
not only fish is expensive but all in one fish price has almost tripled
The fishermen have just been too greedy. Now they have to pay the price. No more unicorns in sight.
Greedy? In what way.
That's what being selfish gets you 🤷♀️
But they can't sell fish! That's the problem.😅

The problem lays on the fact that the required fish for "fish & chips" come from the coasts of France and Spain.
Amazed at how many people are still doubling down on how bad membership of the EU was when we are now seeing the harsh economic impact of not being a member. It would be nice for someone to point out some tangible benefits rather than the nebulous. Even illegal immigration has double, so much for regaining control of our borders and seas.
ON one side of the argument, daily we had news informing people exactly what MIGHT happen if we left, it was depressing.
ON the other side, we had fairy tale stories of colonial Britain making a comeback against the world with absolutely NO plan, NO timeline and NO commitment.
