In episode 4 after the young guy ambushed Joel at the jeep, Ellie told him it wasn't her first time killing someone. Riley was most likely the first person she had to kill. Her best friend and girlfriend. The best day in her life turned into the worst, and she survived it thinking she would at least die with her.
So much survivor's guilt :( but Ellie did take to heart what Riley said: we fight for every moment we get to spend together.
I was literally just thinking about that. That's messed up, for your first kill to be someone you love. A bit like Henry who had to kill Sam.
it explains why Ellie doesn't want to give up on Tess or Sam, hoping they could also fight off the infection

This episode is based on the "Left Behind" DLC of the first game. This is not really part of the main story, since it's an optional piece of content, though it's still pretty relevant plot wise.
Also, quite curious to see if Dani is able to recognize the in-game Joel, in the next episode.
The carousel music was also another 80’s song, The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven”. I love the little details they throw in, but also love the sets and lighting especially with this mall. And of course the acting is top notch.
I think the whole dead body scene is masterfully done storytelling. Really highlighting the nature versus nurture argument. In our world you see a man in that state and wonder what drove him here, did he really not have anyone else to help him, was this really his only option? Ellie and Riley just see another dead cadaver with a bottle of pre-apocalypse whiskey. Which one do you think they’ve seen more or less of over the course of their lives?
Riley and Ellie's story hits me so hard, especially when juxtaposed with Bill and Frank. B&F managed to find one another after the world they knew died and had their love story for the rest of their lives while R&E have lived their whole lives in this world and the one time they find something or someone that's theirs, it's ripped from them. A last love that blossomed in an apocalypse versus a first love that barely got the chance to be told.
Also, Riley and Ellie reacting so nonchalantly when they find that dead guy comes, for each of them, from Riley watching her father kill her mother then her having to kill him as a child and Ellie never having lost anyone she loved at that point so she doesn't feel the full weight of loss yet
This is an adaptation of the comic and the DLC of the franchise. Love it
I wish they included stuff from the comic, but they didn’t. If I’m missing something, I’d really appreciate hearing it.

Also, their roof jumping canonically happened during Ellie's first night at the school. Most of the nods are either fleeting or can be inferred

My thing about Tommy contacting Joel is that it’s not like he had a direct line to Joel. Had he tried to communicate with him, via radio, and told him where he is, there’s the radio operator, and whoever else can intercept radio signals between the two locations. So risking trying to get a message to Joel would’ve meant that someone else would’ve heard this info as well.

What made Ellie immune will be answered in the last episode, in the game is hinted how but 9/10 people miss it because they don’t read the letter so people don’t question it. And like i said in the game is hinted but in the show we will see it so I am glad that they are going to finally confirm the theory that only a few of us had for years.

The reason why Ellie is immune is because Anna was bitten when she was pregnant with Ellie and that make her develop her immunity as a fetus. In the game is only hinted with a letter but here they are showing it, even many people that has played the games doesn’t even know about that letter. The trailer showed Ashley Johnson as Anna, pregnant and it looked like she was trying to get away from a Stalker, that’s when she gets infected and that’s why Ellie is immune.
This was the DLC, not included in the original game, but was released after, but before the second game.
Riley was mentioned to Ellie by Marlene around the time she unchained Ellie.
The only mall that was mentioned in Ep 2 was "The old mall in the QZ" _this_ mall.

This type of booth likely used photopaper and developing chemicals. The chemicals for developing and setting the photographs as well as the photopaper are over 20 years old and have deteriorated. This booth is from the time before digital cameras and photo "printing" were very expensive equipment. Back in the days when you took a picture, and had to take the film in to be developed and have prints made. (I only ever developed black and white film and photos, if I used color film, I had to take it to someone to have it developed. Black and white film and photos I could develop at school either in my photography class, or in the hour after school when I was no longer in that class) I didn't have my first digital camera until about 2006, when a simple one would still cost hundreds of dollars)

Something always bugs me about this scene. Ellie's never seen a vending machine or video game before, how does she know to press the coin return buttons and check for coins in the return slot so immediately? I mean, I knew to do that, but I grew up when arcade games were common. (and even worked in an arcade my parents owned when I was in the 4th-6th grades.)
Given that, I'm surprised after 20 years shut down, some of the games didn't either power up to an error, or have controls that didn't work, or simply not come on. Even an accumulation of dust can keep a button from working or a joystick not providing the movement expected. Mortal Kombat II (a bit later than my time working in an arcade) would have 22 switches between the 1 player 2 player button, the 2 joysticks and the 12 punch/kick buttons [The joysick has up/down/left/right switches, when up and right switch are both active, the software interprets it as a "up+right" giving the joystick 8 directional signals in total (since left and right can't be active at the same time, nor can up and down)]

What little we know about Ellie’s mother suggests she got infected right around the time Ellie was born. Some of us theorize this is why she’s immune.
It’s almost inevitable that there are other immune people, but they either don’t know they’re immune, get killed without turning, or die from something unrelated. Almost no one knows Ellie is immune, so for all we know there could even be other characters we know that are immune too.
I LOVE that final shot of Ellie's face. She's got this look of uncertainty. But her face just can't help but betray looks of excitement and hope that this thing might just work. Ramsey is crushing it.

one thing about this episode that always gets me is the fear and confusion Ellie must have felt when she and Riley were supposed to both turn into infected together and lose their mind together but in reality Riley turned and poor Ellie didnt.
I cant imagine the sort of confusion poor Ellie must have gone through where as time went on, Riley turned but Ellie didnt amd she unfortunately had to kill her best friend/first crush

The best thing (at least for me, one who played the game) in these reactions is *Dani*.
She played the game and she 'knows' certain stuff and situations and characters that appear.
She sits in the middle and doesn't give anything away... I it is kinda a double feature.
Morgan & Sam watching it first hand (the story, characters etc) while Dani sometimes smirks :)
In the end all three are engulfed in the fascinating story telling/showing in live action TLoU and debate.
Dani is a little 😈 in these reactions. All and all the mix of reactions are genuine and great.
Between the heartwarming cute moments showcasing Ellie and Riley finally being able to act like kids again for once, if only for a little while...... only to rip it all away again for the seventh time in a row (damn you, show), this never ending River of tragedy that follows Ellie is emblematic of not just the shows central theme but why Ellie continues to fight, to carry on.
It showcases her and Riley on opposite sides of an ideological, real and tribalistic conflict before they lay down their arms and come together to just be close for a little while because they're each others purpose in this moment; a fascinating parallel to the Bill and Frank love story and why it matters greatly when Ellie continues to lose and lose. And now that she does have someone who looks after her, who she can depend on, who matters to them, she’ll be damned if she loses that kind of connection again. Her immunity should be a gift and yet people keeping dying because of it.
For Riley’s sake, and everyone else who’s died on this journey, Ellie wants to finish this journey make damn sure not to lose what she now calls family.
I think you're right about Marlene finding them the next day. Riley was supposed to leave for Atlanta, so they either went there to pick her up, or to check when she didn't show.
The Fireflies came for her, but Marlene wouldn’t have been with them. It’s a bit of a plot hole they opened up by changing a bunch of other little details.
This episode actually mixes two things: The Last of Us: Left Behind (game DLC that was released around 7 months after the main game's release) with elements of the 4-issue companion comic book, "The Last of Us: American Dreams". These released in October 2013 (written by Neil Druckmann + Faith Erin Hicks. Art by Faith Eric Hicks). And ofc, new elements were added for the show's sake as well.

I noticed I cry more seeing The React Pack cry than the show
They don't tell the audience in the game why she is immune, but you can explore in the game and find some answers, that tell a possible reason. But my guess is 98% don't understand the info, but I have seen videos on UA-cam of someone explaining the information, can't tell very much because I don't want to make spoilers
If you’re referring to GameTheory then you should know that video is trash. He starts by saying she’s not immune, connects a whole bunch of misunderstandings improperly, and concludes that she is immune. If not, then never mind.

Glasses are on point
The mall is located in the QC. Quarantine means cleaned zone. Usually no infected. Therefore, people who enter or leave without permission are also executed by Fedra. This prevents infected people from contaminating this zone. It was just propaganda to claim that they were full of infected to prevent people from going in. That there was finally an infected in it is unfortunate, but by no means predictable. Probably a smuggler who came back to the zone infected.
That's why Ellie and Riley are so carefree with noise. In addition, both have never seen one before because they grew up in QC. Everything they know, they know from propaganda.
If you payed attention, the episode shows you how the story with Ellie and Riley ends. They don't have to show that explicitly.
Riley played Mileena in MK2 and Ellie played Baraka (last game).
Baraka skewered Mileena with his blades as finisher. That was the metaphorical endgame. Ellie had to kill Riley. Most likely with her knife. I don't think she used Riley's pistol. She would have had to disarm her first and it wouldn't have caused such a heavy reaction from her when she shot Bryan.
That's why Ellie asked Joel in episode 2 what it was like for him to kill an infected, knowing that they once were human. I think she needed a comparison to her own feelings because she couldn't classify them. That's why she tortured and stabbed the stalker with her knife in episode 3. She first wanted to see if he felt something and then the anger broke through and she killed him because an infected bit Riley.
Ellie kills Riley and because Riley didn't get in touch with Marlene the next day, she showed up at the mall, saw and took Ellie with her. She has prevented Ellie from being shot by her people, because she knows Ellie. As we learned in episode 1, it was Marlene who brought Ellie to Fedra Orphanage as a Baby. Marlene then locked her up for 3 weeks to see if she turned.
The escalator can also be seen metaphorically. No matter how much Ellie runs against it (sometimes everything stays the same, sometimes there are highs), it still goes further and further downhill for her.
Also, we've learned that Ellie's first impulse is to leave when she feels pushed away or is pushed away or is disappointed in any way, but she keeps coming back. This is one parallel between Joel and Riley. Another parallel is, both are Ellie's protectors. And don't forget Ellie's greatest fear of ending up alone. In the end, she will try everything possible to save Joel or even the world, which she was not able to do with Riley.
Ellie has lost Riley and Sam to the fungus. She is the cure. She wants her survival to have value.
Here it is shown no matter Fedra or Fireflys, for both you are just a number. They tell you what you want to hear and what benefits them, to achieve the respective goals. The officer at the beginning may be really nice, but he's definitely manipulative and told Ellie bullshit. There is no leader at all in Ellie. Riley brings everything that makes a leader and she was assigned to the sewers. There are always only 2 options to choose from and both are manipulated into thinking there are not more. There is only one clearly good or one clearly bad choice. Leaving Fedra obviously does not exist as an option. But orphans are easy to manipulate, as you can see from Ellie, who simply repeats what the officer told her in the conversation with Riley. Which in turn also shows that she is not a leader. And also with Fedra the people starve and kill each other, whereby Fedra officers lack nothing.
The Fireflys are no different. Everyone comes in quickly, they made you feel you belong to a family and you are important to them. In fact, Riley is parked alone in the mall with bombs. These also kill civilians, as we saw in Episode 1 on Tess when one of these bombs exploded, killing two teenager.
The series in general is all about the number 2.
Bill and Frank, Ellie and Joel, Ellie and Riley, Sam and Henry, Joel and Tommy, Kathleen and Daniel, always only two choices, Mortal Kombat 2, joke book volume 2, t(w)ogethernes
I actually thought Ashley Johnson (OG Ellie) would have her cameo here. Obviously, this was not the case, but it comes later in another memory. Most likely in the season finale.

They've already proven in the show that the meter detects the fungus' presence, but not if it's a live culture. Ellie showed up red, but the dog sensed no live cultures of the fungus in her. You guys were right, FEDRA may have been terminating people with immunity to the fungus all this time.
It’s also possible the dog was a scare tactic. If it’s the same dog from the game, then Buckley is useless for anything more than keeping company lol
It seems the music theme will be a common theme throughout this series, at the mall seen a-ha take on me was playing and if I recall 80s music signify trouble.
There's hints in the game, that the mom got bit while ellie was still inside the womb... closest answer we have atm.

The game doesn’t say why she’s immune but there’s a comic book that might have more info and also I think we might be getting more info on why next week for the finale! I’m so excited! I bet it has to do with her mom getting infected while pregnant maybe? Passing immunity to her? That’s my guess since I know they have Ashley Johnson, the game voice for Ellie, playing her mom.
Well, clearly the only one surviving the zombie apocalipsis (for a couple weeks) is the chick in the middle. The other ones would day first hours or get the whole group killed in a day 😂

My theory on why Ellie is immune: I believe her mother may have been in labor with Ellie when she was bitten (if her mom was bitten, I dunno that for sure yet).
Joel and Tommy's dad was a white guy and their mom was latina... You guys guessed every scenario except that, lol...
