- During the last Weekend of October 2024, The Steam Railroading Institute, based in Owosso Michigan, operated the Cadillac Limited Fall Color Tour. These excursions would operate from Mount Pleasant, to Cadillac Michigan, & Return. What was special about 2024 excursion, was Pere Marquette 1225 led this excursion on the Northbound part of the excursion. For the first time since 2019, the locomotive the Polar Express was based off of operated it’s first Fall Colors excursion in 5 years. While there was a Fall excursion planned for 2023, for a Politician, From Owosso to Alma, the Engine was not ready in time. After the running gear rebuild, was completed in 2023, the Pere Marquette 1225 was more then ready to lead this year’s excursion. This year’s Cadillac excursion would operate both Saturday & Sunday. There would be a ferry move early in the morning on Saturday, from Owosso to Mount Pleasant. We would chase the Ferry move, and excursion to Cadillac both Days. Unlike previous years, the 1225 did not Wye in Cadillac. Instead, the PRLX 57 towed the Train back to Mount Pleasant both days. Join me Trackside, as we cover the Ferry move with Beautiful Sunrise, and early morning shots in the Beautiful Michigan Farms, and country side. Join me for both excursion days, as 1225 leaves the typical Michigan Country side, and enters the Northern side of the state. From Farwell to Cadillac, it is Forrest’s, Meadows, hills and farms. So grab some Popcorn, and enjoy my coverage of the real Polar Express, Pere Marquette 1225 on it’s first Fall Colors Excursion since 2019!

I didn't notice this until, I was looking it up the other day, but not only would I drop this video on my Birthday. I would upload it, just two days before the 20th Anniversary of the Polar Express Movie. The movie which used the sounds and blue prints of the Pere Marquette 1225. So along with our new Christmas Chase plan, I dedicate this video to the 20th anniversary of the Christmas Classic, Polar Express.
For this trip, I would chase with @LanesTrains @DroppedSignal @MiddleTennesseeRailProductions and I would run into @AidanDesaiRailProductions2003 @TheBigBananaRailfan @ATrain4014 @ATSF669 & @Djcman331.
The Pere Marquette #1225 is an N-1 2-8-4, Berkshire Type Steam Locomotive built by the Lima Locomotive Works in 1941. It would operate for the Pere Marquette & Chesapeake & Ohio Railway until 1951. It was then donated to Michigan State University, in East Lansing, Michigan. It is here where Chris Van Allsburg, author of The Polar express would see the Locomotive as a kid. Starting in the early 70s, the locomotive would under go a restoration to operation, which would be completed in the 80s. In the early 2000s Warner Brothers would contact the Steam Railroading Institute to get the Blueprints, and record Audio of the 1225 to be used in the Movie the Polar Express. Today the 1225 operates under the Institute on Great Lakes Central Railroad.
There is only two more Fall Foliage Steam Train videos from my Fall chasing season this year. Both are from last week when I chased Great Smoky Mountain Railroad #1702 for three days, and the second is the last Summerville Steam Special of 2024, at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. Which was, another double header with #630 & #4501 which was a great way to close the Fall Colors season for me. As the Christmas Season, approaches I am happy to say I have changed my plans to Chase the Pere Marquette 1225 during the North Pole Express season this year, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Polar Express! I am still going to chase Southern #154 on it's last year of excursions, I am trying to figure out if I can make #113 work. So as always stay tuned! It's great to see 1225 on the Cadillac Excursion again. I am a little bit bummed though that 1225 didn't get to pull both the north and southbound legs of the excursion, because there's some great shots and grades going south on the line that people have got in the last 10 years. But I'm just glad to see 1225 operating more this year!
I do agree, but it also probably made it easier for the crew not to wye it. I am not sure what the situation with the wye in Alma is, but with how late they were Saturday, it woulda been a night time move. I know the Cadillac wye was also out of commission, as it is receiving track work. Maybe next year we may see this again. Only time will tell.
