- Big Box Bikes have been getting better, now it's the Big Box eBikes turn. Hyper has eBikes under $600, like this E-Ride City. A commuter electric bicycle. The bike features a step-thru frame with a 36v integrated battery, 250w rear hub motor, offering 20mph speeds and up to 20 miles per charge.

Are there two classes of this bike or an alternative model priced at around $400? I have seen reviews of a $400 Hyper E-bike, and then there's this review for a $600 price tag. Are they different?
@@mavirek Yes, the City and the Mountain.
@@jeans4484 Hmmm. So what is the distinguishing feature that makes one the $400 negatively reviewed bike and then the other the $600 positively reviewed bike, especially since raising the price $200 doesn’t seem like a selling feature?
@@mavirek I've never seen negative review on MTB, all I've seen is that it worth its low price tag. Also, Mountain and City are the same price, not $200 cheaper, people that got $400 bike just had a good discount deal, they're both $600 on Walmart official site. The different between the 2 are frame and wheels, apart form that, they used pretty much same parts.
@@mavirek No, it is the same bike, it was only on sale...
Don't need three LCD screen, just something simple that works and stays reliable. I like how well the battery blends with the frame.
I downloaded the first speedometer from the playstore on a throwaway phone that I rubber banded to my frame. My 1st accurate reading of my trip to the gym which revealed that my ebikes are not draining fast but rather the trip is longer than car GPS guestimates.
I just bought this bike and have ridden it three times. I'm absolutely in love with it. It's my ride to work and it is just perfect.
What was the top speed on it
How’s it treating you
I'm glad eBikes are starting to come down in price. I think the hyper e-ride is a great bike for someone who hasn't ridden in a long time or someone wanting to try an ebike for the first time.
Is it good for door dash if you can't afford a $1000 e bike
@@mardukent.4377 I believe it would be. It should hold up. Sometimes the more expensive bikes are priced because of hype.
This is the bike for me. Everything I need, nothing I don't.
UPDATE: I have been informed that these are in-store in a full color retail box, not assembled on the bike rack. The store may assemble the bike if requested, but by default this is a specially boxed item that will be in store from April 26-July 26, 2021.
Please do review on kent nazz gravel road bike, and how does it compare to other 200-300 dolars kent road bikes? Thank you so much!
I ve seen your review on kent eagle ridge gravel bike, it'll be greatly helpful if you do on nazz gravel bike, too. Thanks
Well things are definitely got more worse for me I want to put the blood clot went into my lung but it's a small one but it caused the heart to enlarge for the second time the heart is elevating I need to do an AKG today and a stress test it's been two days at the hospital they don't want to send me home and make sure I don't have a heart attack I'm 48 years old and non-smoker of all things
Oh my gosh! I’ll say a prayer for you. Do they know why you developed a clot?

I own a hub drive style ebike. The thing I love most about this kind of system is that even if the battery is dead yt still rides like a normal bike. You don't get much drag on the drive train, and if you really wanted to since the motor is a HG style hub you have a ton of upgrade options. I'm a huge fan of these kinds of bikes. I'm blown away that they've gotten so affordable.
I just paid $800 in the Bronx, NYC and they wanted $975 if I didn’t say all I’m trying to spend is $800 I would’ve got got 4 real🤦🏾♂️....worst part is, the bike is really $600-$650
so, if a bike has rear of front motor its going to be harder to pedal because of the drag from the motor?
ABOVE just buy/carry in backpack spare batt
Do they offer battery upgrade. More miles for this bike?
thank you for posting this review. It made the bike aware to me. Your review also satisfied that the quality would be high enough despite the low cost. It has been assembled for days. I tested it yesterday and am very happy with how it rode. I understand the range limitation of the battery that is enough to get me around where I live for the moment. I appreciate the quality of the fenders and chain guard, not all city bikes come with a chain guard which I personally consider necessary to protect the clothing. UPDATE! After one year almost, the bike still fairly reliable. I ride it 2-5miles most days sometimes 10miles and occasionally just under 20 miles a day. The battery is showing a. Bit drain after a year and all this use.
Gave my daughter the Hyper Eride city ( black ) 2 years ago still works perfect. I personally ride the Kent 700c step thru ebike and has been solid for over 3,000 miles. Caught one on sale and bought it for the 2nd battery and spare parts. Can't beat the return policy with Walmart also compared to anyone. Good review.
I just got this bike, I am so excited! Perfect for me, a beginning E biker, round the neighborhood!♥️
I always enjoy your narration. It’s packed with information every video!
Bought my first ebike, Fiido D2, from Walmart online last year. Loved it! Sold it. Now upgraded to Sondors SmartStep. Love it! Nothing wrong with a Walmart purchase. ☺️
I bought one of these for my wife who is 60 and has bad knees. She now enjoys riding bicycles again thanks to the peddle assist. I liked hers so much I sold my mountain bike and bought the black city edition for myself.
Thank you. I have this bike and I get plenty of play and exercise headed the 4, total 8 mile to the b ball court. Seriously this was very very helpful. Honestly I would have never spent the G for a higher quality bike. So this works great!
Great review. I bought the "moutain" version for my wife and now she can enjoy longer bike path rides without feel terrible afterwards.
I bought one of these for a winter bike, I got it on sale for $398.00. The wheels needed truing out of the box, thats all. I put on schwalbe studded tires and have been pleased with it. Very comfortable riding position. I did spray the bike down with acf50 so the salted streets wouldn't corrode anything. I am in WI.
There were 2 of these in the Walmart near me. They look good, so I came home and watched your review. Good job.
I like that you could plausibly buy an extra battery to pop in and double distance. I like motor noise as an alert to walkers that instead of walking 3 or 4 across, maybe they can double up so you can pass on a jogging trail.
this is solid transportation for a lot of people, and it's not real heavy either. i know ppl that could use this. one woman i know is low wage, is afraid to drive and walks to work. this looks better than walking.
Omg you just described me, I’m scared of driving and walk to work so im considering an electric or regular bike. Still can’t decide 😅
@@AdriDoesItAll i would advise an electric. if you have a health problem of some sort, you're sure you can get home. that's my reason. also, you can dial back or simply not use the electric part, but these bikes tend to be a little heavy, so i only use enough electric assist to overcome the weight, so i get a workout.
i have a rad rover, and a lectric xp step through (after cataract surgery). the xp is hands down the best value in the market. plus, it's foldable, if you desire that. i don't use the feature, but i could just fold it up and put it in the back of my lexus rx350.
seriously: consider the lectric xp. a lot of bike for the price, and their customer service is exemplary. rad was pretty good, juiced bikes was abysmal, and lectric was WAY better than expectation.
I’m a social worker. These less expensive ebikes have given so many people an easy way to get around. They really improve peoples quality of life
I started watching your channel on a bit of a lark. Then I was taken in by the effort you put in to budget bikes, so I subscribed. And now I bought this E-Ride City for my mom.
Well done. :)
Congrats on the new bike. I hope she likes it
KevCentral I was fairly impressed with the E-Ride City. The brakes were not great, and the power comes on in a great big rush, but for the price it was surprising.
Still, in the end, mom wanted something lighter weight over something that pedaled for her. We ended up getting a slightly more expensive specialty shop bike that’s much lighter.
Still, I think the E-ride City is arguably better /transportation/ than probably most cars in a bike-friendly, short commute situation.
I own one. Purchased from neighborhood bike shop. Paid $800 for it. Ooops.😢. I like it. Comfortable for 61 year old woman. I ride 20 miles 4 times weekly. Your review was on point. Thanks.
They had these on sale a while back for $400. Even owning a couple ebikes, I was really tempted to pick one of these up at that price. Right now $600 is still a great value considering parts shortages and ship times for most ebikes.
Bought this because of this video over a month ago now. If anyone can find them, buy it right away. Excellent bike, don't expect crazy range. I found mine on clearance for 250. Might need a tune up but worth it. Best purchase in awhile.
I have had mine for 2 months, and I am loving it! I enjoy riding the plentiful light trails in my City Windsor Ontario! I changed the seat only so far, but thinking if upgrading to V brakes!
I owned the same e city bike from hyper I’ve been riding it every where & it has never let me down I even done 9 miles from work in downtown LA to the dangerous sts in Compton works just like the say I bought it, the best 450$ I’ve ever spent. My first electric bike I’ll never regret buying it
How does it works with rain? How do you wash it or clean it?
@@eduardorodrigueztoledo5512 don’t use when it rain! Dangerous & can mess up your cables & electric motor on the tiers
@@carlosgonzalez2940 Do you know where can I find spare parts for it?
@@eduardorodrigueztoledo5512 online, but they might be expensive, I say work with what you got & sometimes the best is taking it to the bike shop before it gets worse
Wow almost there! Slightly bigger battery and motor. E-bikes are getting better and better.
Just bought mine! I now own this and the Schwinn 700c dsb that you also reviewed. Thanks to your videos I have made 2 very informed purchases! 😊😊
Congrats on the new bikes
This is pretty exciting, this opens up better transport to a whole new affordable price point. I hope they are repairable!
Thanks for a really good thorough review, I just got this bike, mine was a little more $. I'm going to try it out today- I'm a beginner E-biker so I think this will be perfect for me!🙏♥️
Bought one for my daughter 3 months ago for 398$!!! On sale
Ordered a second battery from Hyper for 199$ runs like a dream with plenty of range..
Going for as wide a replacement tire and already upgraded seat and suspension post,,
Maybe best buy I've had in a long time...
Where did you buy it? i only saw then for over $600 and no on sales
Yo how wide did you go on tires? Cause the thin stock tires are torture.
I am about to pick one up off of FB marketplace. Where can I get a second battery? Or do you have one for sale by chance ?
This might be perfect for the wifey to keep up with me on the rail trails or even some light commuting... She'd love the color as well. Rim brakes are fine if you aren't going through mud.
I have same bike but the MTB 26in from Walmart. Within 4 months forks, battery and battery charger went out. Wasn’t to happy but their customer service is awesome with no questions asked. Great warranty. The bike was bought in august 2020 and they were able to pretty much get the parts out within a week or so even with the parts shortage. If you pick a bike manufacturer, make sure they are well stocked and provide great service
Thanks for sharing
It says 20 miles per charge, But I got 26 miles on mine today. With some power left over .
I like to ride the Thermal Belt Rail Trail From Alexander Mills to Gilkey NC. 13 miles one way.
@I got only 6 miles on my first trip, defective battery?
This was a great video. I ordered online and get it delivered today. So excited and will get back to you. Thanks!
"Assembly of shortcuts" is a great phrase!
Your presentation was superb. It went along at a good clip, your articulation was clear and it hit on all the important points. Bravo.
Now, I agree with your assessment of every point you addressed. I also like the little tips and insights you added which help the viewer.
One thing I would strongly recommend against is for the adult who owns this to allow a young-fast person to take it for a “joy ride. This bike will not hold up well under severe stress. Especially the wheels, as they will easily bend under strong side forces.
One last thing might be to propose the idea of finding a bike shop that will work on it. I mean for simple things like a flat tire or derailleur adjustment. If they can’t then there are plenty of great videos on UA-cam.
Again, excellent job!
I ordered this bike because of your review. I will get it on Tuesday May 25th!!!! Can hardly wait 👏👏👏
Congrats
Best review of this bike that I have seen. Nice job!
Very cool, this will open the doors for a LOT of people!
Just ordered it due to this review. Ive been waiting for a good review on a lower end E bike, and you've made one! Upgrading from the Huffy Nel Lusso that I also got due to your review!
Congrats! Let me know what you think
@@KevCentral It's great! Rides like a charm, and the pedal sensor is very well tuned as you said. My partner will be buying one now as well!
This is at my local Walmart for about $600. I couldn’t believe it. I like this a lot. If I needed an electric bike, I would give this one serious consideration.
I just bought this bike it will be here on the Dec 5th i can't wait to ride it looks pretty smooth and i feel like its worth the price. Thanks! for the video.
Congrats!
I’m a car enthusiast so the motor noise is a plus lol. It’s a tall bike so us 5’1” peeps probably couldn’t ride it haha. It’s a sharp looking bike, just not wild about the twist shifter. Great video Kev!
Edit: I just checked Walmart Canada and this bike is being sold here, except the price is $798 CAD. The mountain bike sibling is the same price.
Still have mine 2 years awesome Bike bought At Walmart and perfectly assembled at Walmart , financed through affirm and bought the extra warrant and I bought bike insurance im set and its an awesome bike!
i have seen this at my local wal-mart but they usually only have one or two available at any giiven time. i bought one and surprise by it as well. i have a cuple other e-bike both folding and have throttle only option. this bike has a smother and more stable ride than my folding e-bikes and cheaper even at $600. plus surprisingly i really dont miss having a throttle only mode.
An e-bike for the masses. That's alot of bike for the money. Great review.
Just bought one from a liquidator for wifey ($399, local guy, said "former display" though could be from shipping incident) w/ no manual. Looks decent and functional. My main concern is how the LED display/control will last over time, esp. in rain. I will keep the bike garaged and she will mostly ride in fair weather. I've got many bike parts, so will try to switch front wheel to a quick-release for easy loading in the minivan. Bike weighs ~50 lb so seems iffy on our bike rack and loading in the van is easier anyway. Was going to buy a Jetson Bolt Pro ($349) but just disappeared at Costco. I like that Hyper uses standard size 700c tires so no worries sourcing replacements. Not sure about sourcing Bolt's little 14" tires. Only downside noticed so far is no integral headlamp like many e-bikes have.
I got the Hyper 29" It comes with the exact same motor and battery. I wish I had gone for the step through frame because I am older and it's harder to get on to. Still, it's a great bike. I would love to get an extra battery for it because it is just so much fun, you don't want to stop riding after 10 or 15 miles.
I purchased this same bike 7/26/22 for $418 pre-assembled. I've really enjoyed it. But I did put a suspension seat post and cruiser seat on it. I stay out of 1rst and 6th gears because the chain tends to jump off. There is a fix for this but I'm happy with 2-5 gears. So far in low power I've got 31+ miles on a charge. I would buy it again.
I recently bought an Axum DP largely based on research and your channel. I love it! Now I am looking for a 24” and 26” of similar quality for my sons. I have been looking at the GT youth stomper pro at Dicks. I would love to see a kevcentral review.
I have this bike I just got it a couple months ago and I like it so far
MY DAD just bought today we ll see how it goes thanks for the review
3 reasons to buy 3. Is as easy to ride as a 10 speed with power off which means you won't be stranded if battery dies. Most or many ebikes (even rentals) become sluggish to the point of needing to walk them when off. Not this. 2. Sitting up high as if on a horse allows you to see everything and drivers looking to hit & run to see you + no size inferiority BUT ENOUGH ABIUT THAT 1. Removable battery implies backpack a 2nd or 3rd battery for unlimited motorized riding.
I ride it 12 miles uphill to work, recharge the battery there, and ride back full speed. Great little commuter
A good value and it looks much better than expected at that price.
Thanks, helpful review. First view of budget e-bike. Perhaps it’s time to begin looking at options for my wife & I. We will see…
You can move the pedals back and forth to keep the motor going but kills the battery a bit quicker
YesSiRr!! Definately NOT bad!! I like it!! We don't have Wal-Mart in Australia..wish we did!! Lol!! But it's definately not bad for the price tag..and it looks like a comfy Ryde. Thankz for sharing Mate.. always entertaining & informative watch!! Much Respect & Much appreciated KeV!! Stay Bless and Stay Safe out there big FellA!! Lol!!
Frankly, I am surprised that more big box retailers, (Target, Costco, BJs etc) do not offer more sub-$800 e-bikes. For this upcoming Summer they should have weekend outdoor sidewalk demos in the style of the (Pre-Covid) food tasting kiosks. I love my Rad Rover and would like to see more people (whether well-heeled or budget minded) out and about on e-bikes. I tell my curious friends and family that riding an e-bike is the next best thing and all the fun of Horseback riding but much more accessible at a fraction of the cost.
The Lectric XP is still a better value. At $899 with a milk crate zip tied to the rear rack, it's my truck / grocery-getter / workhorse with more speed and range. Thanks for the review Kevin. 👍
Electric doesn't ship to Hawaii or Alaska. that leaves me out.
I got this for just under 400 before tax, and I just tested it out briefly tonight, and I am very impressed with the ride and power for the specs and price.
I don't have a great place to lock up inside at work, so I have to lock up outside, so finally a cheap ebike I won't mind locking up outside all day (with a good couple kryptonite's still!)
@@bremenpark1
Check Walmart's website - it was still under 400 a few days ago.
We appreciate the information, best luck.
I just bought this ebike at Walmart in the Black Friday sale for 428 dollars including tax with free delivery. I am very happy. 👍
Traded my electric scooter for this bike as I am on a budget! I took off the mudguards and rear rack to give it more a clean look! This is a big bike. I like the fact you can remove battery and it’s not to heavy for an electric bike. I have a 2 Mile ride to transportation center we’re I then put bike on bus rack! Will add some lights! If I did not need to use bus I would get a wider tire electric bike but for now this is perfect!
Will be cool to see what you have to say about the mountain version of this bike
I bought one yesterday and so far 24 hrs 2 charges 28 miles total logged love it...got a second battery coming already and it's a good thing I'm planing some rides 9.5miles out 9.5 back got a back up battery but I can also charge the main in frame also just backpack the charger
where did you get the second battery?
Maybe a good choice for people that aren't sure they'll like the ebike experience?! Interesting take btw about the market changing from brick and mortar bike sales to mostly direct. Great content as usual!
Wow, with ebikes getting pricier and pricier, what a terrific value for a budget friendly ebike (if you don't need to go too far.) Awesome!
That's dirt cheap, but for a reason, high end bikes are tones better with lots of info, unlike display like the analog one on the wall Mart bike my Sondors Fold X goes 25mph and 65 miles per charge.
@@davidrossmiller8349 If you are getting 65 miles out of that Sondors you are doing most of the work 💪
I saw this E bike at my Walmart in Fortcollins, Colorado on Mongolia and mulberry and I just bought one and I need to learn more about this blue E bike
Congrats on the new bike
Love the color
I come here for all bike reviews!
Got one.....happy with price and performance......Thanks
I just got one from Walmart and I love it..
I acquired one of these today and got 15 miles on the first test ride still had between two and one bar left on the display. A few things where not assembled correctly by our local assembler but nothing a few simple tools couldn’t sort out
Congrats!
@@KevCentral I only got 6 mile range on my first trip. Did I get a bad battery?
TBH I think all ebikes should have the step thru design because it simply makes sense lol
I hear a lot of people saying step thru should be the base design for eBikes, so you are not a lone voice
I bought this for my son who is a sophomore at LONG Beach State. I bought it online from Walmart at the black Friday sale price of $398.00 It arrived yesterday I put it in garage as it is a Christmas gift. Gonna have him watch this video before he rides it. Let you know more after Christmas.
Super. Congrats on the sale price
You may wish to assemble it and do a systems check ASAP. Many need some tweaking. Also, you don't want to go past the no return date.
Looks a solid ebike except for the dire front shocks personally I would have preferred rigid forks.
i just bought one! hope its easy to put together
Hi just saw this video those Grip shifts i had them on my MuddyFox Livewire and if you stand up to pedal your hand nudges the grip shift changing gears when standing which is annoying especially going up a steep climb. Those forks again my Steel Muddyfox Livewire has zoom forks which i cant change but they have those rubber seals lol, which dont do anything accept for decoration. If you lift seal up to add lubricant the bike ends up with dirty stantions from the rubber seals not doing anything, plus picks up lots of dirt from outside riding. Also nice riding scenery quiet and no litter i noticed.
Excellent report! Yhsnks
I own this bike, and one of the biggest challenges for me, is when I'm pedaling on a flat surface all out, I'm pedaling like crazy and feel like I'm not making anymore progress. So, in the next few days, I'm going to replace the front chainring with a 48T to see if that helps. Just don't like wearing myself out needlessly when I shouldn't have to. Secondly, I opened up the battery compartment to expose the controller. On similar bikes there is a white/black speed sensor cable that can be disconnected, but on this bike, there is not one. I really would like to disable the speed sensor but, don't know how. Perhaps, it has something to do with the brake cable you mentioned on the handlebars (I don't know). Slightly wider tires might be more advantageous for gravel trails, maybe something like 700x40c. Lastly, are there any recommendations you would make with regard to the rear gear cassette? Any recommendations on other areas of the bike?
Many people have bought this model, and to see you make a video on upgrading this one (or one like it) would be very interesting! All the best. Cheers
Did you have to heat up the ends to open it? i tried openeing mine and i'm guessing it's glued? could you make a video?
This is perfect for the old perents who don't like to ride fancy bikes
HEY ! I wouldn't be caught dead on an E-bike.
“Perents...”?
Everybody likes fancy or beautiful or lightweight or premium bikes, but most people cannot afford them, right?
This Hyper is perfect for all of us lower-income people. I agree with you about that.
Best value ebike by far. It deserves a fork that would offer adjustability.
Another great video
This is awesome!
Curious how you felt (feel if you still own it) about the color. It doesn't appeal to me in pictures and video, but the grey version is listed for $70 more for some reason. As far as I know they're 100% the same other than color. Thanks for the reviews.
I commend Walmart for this entry-level offering but I have ONE Quibble about this bike....the Battery....OK, At first 10-15 mile range seems sufficient. As time goes by and you take longer excursions, range becomes a limiting factor. An external mounted, serviceable (or ready-replaceable) battery would seem a better option. Not as pretty as a "form-fitting" battery but not as limiting.
The 250w Motor with no throttle seems sufficient for the use-case of this e-bike but a more robust battery option would make this a real winner.
Thanks for commenting
Wow! Very surprised at all this offers at a reasonable price point. I would, love to see how a shorter rider likes it.
Great review - thank you. any fresh comments? Also in the lowest mode will it get more than 20 miles? Also, what's it like to pedal when you are not using e-assist, and finally, I'm 5'6". Will this bike okay for me height wise? I have arthritis in my knees and need to keep the seat high to avoid pistoning my knees.
Have not seen in local stores, thinking about buying one.
I like how your in Florence Alabama where I’m from
Would you be able to list some good replacement shocks please? For the aluminum comp. The ones that came with it are just absolute mush. And the ones in your upgrade video are currently out of stock.
Nice vid man
I thought this was a great review and I did buy the bike and am very happy with it. I had to retire at 50. And go on disability. Because I am legally blind completely in one Eye and partially any other. But I can't say well enough to get around. And I am on my own so I don't drive. So this is a great alternative to get me around my little suburban town. As with anything, it does take a little while to get used to. I'm talking specifically about the cadence and when the power Kix in. As a newbie I fell. When the power kicked in as I was just starting to peddle. But once I figured things out all is good. I even took it's OK double size. Large black milkcrate attached to. The bike rack for Holding my bags. As I shop around town.😂
Hello ! Thanks.
Saw a hyper carbon x 29 at the Walmart in my city... I didn’t think they sold those in store
I'm confused as I'm aware of several EBikes under 500.00 like the Swagtron EB 5 pro plus. At least it was until this year. Also it's brakes come with a motor cut off. Still 598.00 is no slouch either as prices go.
Yes I have seen it at are Walmart in Wausau Wisconsin
Wow, hello from Stevens point lol
I have seen E bikes in the bins at wally world but not on the counter yet.
Hi,
I’ve communicated with you in the past asking you to reevaluate the Hyper -bike mountain bike…..You did…my thanks for the nice comments. I’ve had my mountain e-bike since December 2020 when the bikes were 398.99. For two bucks more, you got a helmet…a 20+ value. I’ve had no problems with the bike. In my neighborhood, you’re either going down or up….no real flat spots…The motor does quite well getting my 220 weight up the inclines. Looking at all the e-bikes out there and their going price, I think 400 bucks was not a bad investment. Thanks again for your video. One question for you…….How can I raise the handlebar s?
The e-ride city has a quill stem, so it can be adjusted by loosening one bolt and raising the bar height
Just picked this up for $398 online. Then I see the exact same bike in white for $1,398. The only difference was it had disc brakes and a display screen. Wow!
