mines shoulder joint snapped, wasnt even rough with him, bought buzzmods version right after and asked goodsmile for a refund/replacement joint. Sad to see he didnt get the same justice as rengoku.

Yeah, the moment I saw that he was being produced by freeing, my expectations for this figure dropped immediatly. To explain what is happening here, this is a completely different manufactuarer and NOT Max Factory. When it comes to the Demon Slayer line, Max Factory is what we're used to. This is a completely different manufacturer, which explains the drastic difference in quality compared to Rengoku.
FREEing isn't universally bad. It's just that they tend to do the more gritty Figma over the typically anime ones, which begs the question: why did they produce Akaza? Why not just Max Factory, since they were also working on Rengoku anyway? It's true that FREEing Figma tend to be overpriced for what you get, but I can't say I anticipated this level of quality (or rather lack thereof) just because of the name FREEing.
I was waiting for this one. As amazing as Rengoku was, I expected (based off pictures and reviews by other people) that Akaza would be in turn horrible in equal measure. It's absurd that these are two figures, both Figma, of similar price, released at basically the same time, from the same series, meant to be paired, and yet they're so wildly different in how they're executed. I can deal with him having so few accessories, even if I don't like it, I can deal with the atrocious Marvel Legends-tier ab hinge, even if I don't like it. What I can't handle is that we have a Brawler character, technically the most nimble of them all so far, and he has the worst articulation. Why do all of the other KnY/DS Figma have an existing and functioning knee joint, for example, and Akaza has this weird, pitiable Marvel Legends-tier hinge that doesn't even hit 90 degrees? If they were going to be lazy, just reuse the engineering of the other characters! Then they have his plastic shirt cut up in 3 in the back, presumably for butterfly joint freedom... BUT THEN HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY, and the plastic is so hard it you can't even press into it to get more out of it. WHY THE CUTS THEN!? A Brawler character! The guy who does kicks and jumps and flies around and he has the worst range of them all because some guy over at FREEing phoned it in hardcore. *10k yen btw*. Rengoku is amazing and has a slew of accessories. Akaza is incomprehensibly limited and has basically no accessories. It's like they were like "Okay, Rengoku is finished and he's pretty amazing. Probably one of the better recent Figma. Now how can we make every wrong design decision with Akaza to make sure he's basically a waste of plastic, time and money." How does this happen?
I feel like this figure is ultimately an accessory for the rengoku figure. I'm gonna have fun pairing them up together but no way this guy is any good on it's own.

But Akaza is still its own figure, a 11,000 yen figure. With basically 0 accessories and wonky engineering or just outright no engineering at all where there should be. If anything, pairing it with Rengoku only serves to illustrate the stark contrast in quality and effort. (I still want to know why the vest is cut up in three pieces if it doesn't do anything! Did they intend to add a butterfly in an earlier stage and then just cancelled that but kept the vest cuts? They serve no purpose now!)

So many things about this release are just outright strange that I really have to wonder what kind of weird stuff happened during the development of this for it to turn out this way. Like you and I both mentioned, the splits in the vest are one major thing that stands out, but the entire leg sculpt and engineering as well. I also saw someone pop out the lower leg (where it slots into the bottom of the pants) and it has a sort of rounded peg that makes it seem like it was meant to be articulated?

My best guess is that whoever was in charge of designing this figure, was rushed to have it ready fast so it could be out the same time rengoku is, thus resulting in a product that feels all but finished. If that's the case, then I feel bad for the designer. I simply can't imagine some higher up looking at it and not seeing any flaws with it. it had to have been rushed.

Technically, they are. Max Factory did the Rengoku figma while Akaza is an SP release and was done by Freeing. For some reason Freeing don’t use all the latest engineering techniques. This is really unfortunate as I was really excited for this figma

I got Rengoku in the mail yesterday and then Akaza today. Been a happy few days for me haha. But unfortunately Akaza was made by Freeing? Which isn't Max Factory... so I think that explains a number of things that were lacking on this figure.

This one stands out as particularly low-effort (or, worse yet, has hints of effort being put in and then unceremoniously dropped. See: the split vest sculpt which I can only assume was there to accommodate a butterfly at some point, but it doesn't have one) On the Figma side of things, FREEing is generally behind some of the more grittier and realistic figures, such as the Silent Hill ones, the Table Museum Figma and arguably also the God Hand Berserk Figma. Though Akaza is exceedingly mediocre for the price and company (imho), it's not the only recent FREEing Figma that isn't so well received. The Table Museum Tutankhamun was also blasted for the casket being extremely cheap looking compared to the promotional images.

I still like the Akaza figure and don't regret the purchase for it at all but I will keep in mind around future FREEing figures for now on.
FREEing is a different branch of GSC. It means Max Factory didn't handle this release. FREEing typically makes 1/4 scale bunny girl figures, but they dip into figma and nendo lines from time to time as well.

Same here! It truly is a pretty good accurate representation of Akaza from the anime even if the articulation is limited but even with that, I'm still able to pose him into great fighting stances despite that.

The Buzz Mod version is way better. It has a bulkier look which really captures Akaza. But it does have the same problem with the pink tassels on his waist. Maybe even worse. Aside from leaving the pink scratches on his pants, those are removable and if you're not careful, you might lose those if they fall off.
I own this figure. This one by far is the weakest of the Demon Slayer line. Max Factory didn't even make this, Freeing did. And apparently they are also making Mahito and Jougo from JJK.

Did you not read the description on the website? Good smile, max factory did NOT sculpt the figure. This is not their fault to blame, however the fact that it's this bad does lay on them slightly, it's not completely their fault. But I understand the frustration.
At least give us some shading 😑 I would say the eyes look a little foggy to me, it's kinda gone in the tattoo (per say) And yes the reverse ab crunch just looks terrible and it doesn't have much articulation, the articulation looked terrible from the start but at least it worked but now making it not work either, now that terrible

I got the Buzz mod figure and it has way better articulation in my opinion
its most likely Freeings side of the figure because with all the other figma ones have been good but it's this time they do one with Freeing it makes the figure lack items and other things.

Did you not read the description on the website? Good smile, max factory did NOT sculpt the figure. This is not their fault to blame, however the fact that it's this bad does lay on them slightly, it's not completely their fault. But I understand the frustration.

I would say the eyes look a little foggy to me, it's kinda gone in the tattoo (per say)
And yes the reverse ab crunch just looks terrible and it doesn't have much articulation, the articulation looked terrible from the start but at least it worked but now making it not work either, now that terrible

It's a Figma, but it's not by the people you are used to. FREEing did Akaza. That doesn't make it alright, I mean, it's still distributed as a Figma, but it might help explain just how it could be so different.
