- Composer, organist, pianist, choral director, and music professor Robert Nathaniel Dett was born on October 11, 1882. He was a leading composer, known for his use of African-American folk songs and spirituals as the basis for choral and piano Classical music compositions.
In the early 1900’s he was among the first Black composers to join (ASCAP) the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. Dett performed at Carnegie Hall and at the Boston Symphony Hall as a pianist and choir director. Dett published more than 200 piano, vocal, and choral works. Major chorus works include Chariot Jubilee and the After the Cakewalk.
