    If you really wanna know why PG's picking is god tier it's because he spent something like the first 2 years of his playing only using upstrokes as a mistake. Most guitarists have trouble when alternate picking when the pick is caught in between the higher string (pitch) and the lower string. If you can up pick at the same speed as down picking then you learn to make that tiny motion with your wrist to readjust the pick.That's why he's telling you to practice that blues lick starting with both an up and a down stroke. You could also just run through scales with a metronome only using up strokes to build up the muscle memory too. Most people can down pick like a fucking machine but if you tell them to do the same thing but with upstrokes they sound like they just picked up a guitar for the first time. Speed comes with accuracy and balance and if your down picking is better than your up picking well then you're gonna end up tripping over notes in certain runs.
    It's just surprising that he's mentioned that story about his up picking but he's never mentioned specifically practicing up picking in any of the old REH vids or in these other lessons. Maybe he's unaware of it or maybe he's just trying to keep his secrets.

      But he was like 6 and couldn't actually play anything lol. Practicing upstrokes is great advice but it took Paul years of practice to pick as fast as he does, and he couldn't do it that young. He literally didn't know you could downstroke and thought you had to play using one finger on the fretting hand because he took lessons really young and had a warped memory of it. That's probably why he doesn't mention it. Thousands of hours of practicing and going to the best music school in the country is why he's so good IMO.

    Heres a great tip I stumbled upon by accident..
    Play fret 01234 using all alternate picking across the strings for a few minutes, break, play again, break...then try pauls hard lick.
    Think this works to improve your picking because the more notes you play on each string (in this case 5 per string), the easier your brain thinks it is because you arn't crossing strings as ofter, and your wrist gets a break between each cross..

    When you do the upstroke on the g-string, pick the string with a rotating wrist motion (opening a door knob type of motion). That causes your pick to fly over the d-string and be ready in position for a downstroke on d-string.

    To be perfectly honest, I find that Gilbert's way of picking UP on the downbeat is actually much easier to play. At least for me it is. It also helps if you guys ACCENT certain notes while doing simple licks like this. It will really help with your accuracy. Start simple, and work your way up.

    Makes much more sense staring with than upstroke so you don't have to jump the string with an upstroke it seems to be way less inofICIENTIF ANY ONE CAN CONFIRM HES TALKING ABOUT STARTING WITH AN ON HIS FAMOUS 4 note exercise is this correct?

      Its just paper to stop the string from buzzing

    • @marcusblackfellow2850
      @marcusblackfellow2850 8 років тому

      The string is likely wrapped too high around the tuners so the breaking point is not clean off the headstock side of the nut, resulting in ugly sympathetic resonances if not muted. A string tree would fix it, but string trees bring other issues if not properly greased, like the wound strings catching on the tree (and who wants grease hanging off their string tree, getting allover the inside of their case). Another possibility is the breaking point on the fingerboard side of the nut is not at the very edge of the fingerboard, resulting in horrific squealing buzz when playing open strings. This is a really basic nut-making mistake and it would be embarrassing for a guitarist of PG's caliber to put up with a nut cut like that as it also wrecks intonation as the vibrating length of the string is longer than it should be (extending the scale).

    • @EvaluateAssimilate
      @EvaluateAssimilate 6 років тому +1

      @@federtm2 it seems that he doesn't prefer to be "trapped" between two strings when picking. If you take the last lick, and start on an up-stroke on the D string, you'll end up on a down-stroke when transitioning to the G string thus trapping you between the two strings. It's more economic, on the picking side of things, to practice it the way he explains here to avoid the mistake of having to lift your pick out from between the two strings to skip to another. It's not so noticeable when playing at a steady pace, but you'll wonder why you're struggling to pick fast enough and stay synchronised when the speeds are increased.
      I hope this helps and that all is well. Sorry its 4 years over due!
