As photographer, limiting myself to the iphone has done more for my photography than anything else.
Very informative. I stopped upgrading my iPhone every year because I could never justify the small changes and the price point. This seems like a great time to upgrade from my iPhone 11. Everything I'm seeing so far looks fantastic. Great video buddy!
Thanks a ton mate! That’ll be a wild upgrade from an 11!
It’s a big jump that’s what I did, Instagram compression sucks tho
@@rufdoestattoos yeee, I’m still looking for a way round this as I often see other users posts hold much better quality than mine
I just upgraded from an 11 Pro Max to the 14 Pro Max, this is a good time to go for it.
Great to see someone recognising the significance of the camera improvements.
The underexposure is purely down to Lightroom's reading of the file. The ProRAW files contain a lot of computational data that doesn't display well with LR's default profiles. The files are technically under, over and properly exposed at the same time haha. LR seems to take the underexposed data as it's base preview at the moment. I would class that as a bug, Though - as others have mentioned - you can use the Apple profiles to apply a curve to fix it.
Upon more testing I don’t think it is a bug as it only happens with the 48 megapixel sensor. I think it’s just under exposing to not clip the highlights. Plus, I’ve tested the pro raw color profile and I feel it’s too heavy handed with the tonal adjustments
It’s very pleasant hear you how to explain this topic about this new IPhone 14 pro, thanks my friend
This is the best video I've seen on this topic. Thank you!
Great video, really enjoyed it 😄 It really shows how apple improved the camera and the 48MP ProRaw shots blew my mind 🤯
I’ve been waiting for a good photographer to review. Mine was ordered on Friday. Thank you.
Damn those natural scenic view.. Lucky you to be over there
Definitely incredibly grateful
Glad I’ve kept the X since 2018. Finally justifiable to upgrade. ❤
Update: just did 🫣
Thoughts, the cameras are way better🫰but missing 3d touch. It’s been so useful in many ways.
I can’t wait to upgrade soon. I’m coming from iphone 11 and I am so excited to have those camera features 🔥
some ppl are saying it’s a small difference, it really isn’t it has a sense of realness that other iphones don’t have, they seem super digitized while the 48mp proraw is real resolution
I live in Las Vegas, and I love taking “pro quality“ photos to send to friends and relatives who **don’t** live in Las Vegas! I just received my iPhone Pro Max and am looking forward to putting it through its paces. I’m not a professional photographer, but with my various iterations of iPhone, I’ve had occasional results of genius!
Finally someone who use the actual pro raw for the iphone 14 pro and respect it like a major improvement not like the other reviewers who use jpg 12mp🤮 if u want blurry(bokeh) for people use just focos app..soo good much better than portrait iphone ❤️
Great review. All those people who say the new iPhone isn’t a worthwhile upgrade over the 13 Pro are clearly not photographers. The 48mp sensor blows my mind considering it’s still just a phone. For portraits at 24mm the detail and sharpness is insane. You just need to zoom in and see the difference.
Well, you just answered it yourself : people that dont see a point in upgrading are not mobile photographers. Photographers walk around with their main camera all the time anyway, and for them, most of the time pictures or videos taken on their phone are purely for entertainment or for social media (which ultimately degrades the quality anyway once you upload them).
I have been using 13 Pro and 14 Pro, comparing them side by side in low light situations I noticed that 13 Pro is capturing more light than 14 Pro
Great video! That wedding image on the 1x lens looks incredible. To me this iPhone (and probably other top androids) finally made kit lenses obsolete. A crop camera with a nice lens will be still much better than the iPhone but the kit most likely will not.
Cheers! Yeah I’d say it’s the best camera you can by for a budget of $1000.
You check all of the requirements in the "saccessful youtuber" list man. Keep doing this quality videos
Means a lot thank you
Just got my iPhone 14 Pro Max last week. Looking forward to taking some shots of the sunrise next to the Missouri River in Raw mode.
I was planning to buy 14 PRO, but I decided to wait for 15. I was probably expecting more then what they offered with 14. But RAW is a key to get the most out of any phone these days :) and I can get decent photos even from my old iP XR when I shoot in RAW. If they can bring 48mpx sensor also for ultra wide, it would be perfect. Hope it will be in IP 15, also with USB C to get better transfer speeds.
Hopefully, eventually the RAW results will be what comes out of the camera by default.
Usb-c: almost 100%.
Ultrawide 48 mpix: almost 0%.
The uw sensor is much smaller and has been upgraded to iphone 14 pro. Very unlikely will change in next gen.
On the 15 they will upgrade the telephoto lens, usb-c and probably smaller upgrades.
I’ve changed from 11 pro, and it is a huge upgrade :)
@@Monsterhumster is it really a huge upgrade from 11 pro mate ..??
@@awesomeagnihotrisvlog indeed. I mean everything is subjective, but for me the camera is really crucial point. If you are willing to spend time to deal with raw photos, than it is mindblowing. The details and the information is similar what you can expect from an interchangeble lens camera with 1" sensor. The video is even better, with the new stabilization and/or cinematic mode, you can make videos you never thought before, at least not from a phone.
If you are not using the camera that much, than an iphone 11 is more than enough, but I could say the same to iphone 8 what I have before the 11 pro (and now 14 pro).
@@Monsterhumster Thanks for your valuable time / input mate …I guess it’s time to switch to 14pro max 😃🙌🙌
I was happy with my 12, but Verizon had a really great upgrade special and I really love photography. The camera on this 14pro is unbelievable. I’ve paid for professional level Nikon in the past… this phone is at that level if not better.
Great review! Very comprehensive and easily understood! ❤🎉
i have a Canon 5dsr 50mp full frame camera that takes some amazing photos if you have good light and a tripod.
I also have the iphone 15 Pro Max. I just took a few photos with both to compare resolution and am really blown away by the iphone's 48mp proraw images. It's really shocking how close these 2 are in resolution. Considering the tiny iphone sensor vs the full frame sensor should be no match, I have to attribute this to iphone's computational software. It's absolutely crazy what they have been able to do.
It would be great if they could add 48mp sensors to each of the lenses, but for now the 24mm lens is enough for me to make this an everyday carry around camera.
iphone is king as always
Thanks for this! I’m going from an 11 and everyone says there’s not really a difference between the 13 and 14. I use my phone for my YT channel and for traveling. Thanks again!
I’m the same . I’m taking far more photos with my 13 pro ( raw ) than my a7 iv . I just love the raw capabilities of that little device
The fact that you only have 2.92k subs is insane. Your channel speaks wayyyy more man. Beautiful video showcasing the iPhone 14 pro beast camera
Means so much thanks legend
@@JonnyRoams you’re welcome!
I have a 13 pro and I told myself that I would keep this thing until it drops but honestly, the camera difference is way more than what it seems. 48mp really makes a true difference and it’s something I have to consider.
Hahaha apple consoomer
@@heffe4257 it was only something I would consider. I don’t really have any “f*** it money”, so I’m probably just gonna wait. You say it’s me being a consumer, but I would argue that I’m only doing it because of a genuine upgrade, if there even is one. And in case you call me a consumer because of the 13 pro max, you’re wrong on that because I traded in and I got this thing for 600$ and didn’t have to pay the full price.

Great Review and lovely shots you got with it, my 14 pro should be here in a couple weeks. Also appreciate your review as a fellow English photographer now living on the West coast of America! :D
Thanks so much! Love to hear it 🇬🇧
Hi, hello from a new subscriber!
I had the same experience about a week ago, pretty amazing! Earlier I had a similar "jump" in camera quality when going from an iPhone 5 to an LG-G6, but not much after that. My phone before the 14 Pro was an iPhone 12 mini, very decent camera, but this 14 Pro is another level on its own
Thank you for this! 😊
I have 14 Pro Max I’m 70 years old and not very techy. Here’s my question please.
1. Does the 48mp only work in the raw setting mode?
2. Or does 48mp work on wide and 2x without raw as well please? 😊🇬🇧
The phone will use the 48 while in raw mode and use 12mp in default mode i guess , while also using 12mp in ultrawide mode
You seem super cool! the video was very informative and well made. definitely earned my sub!
Glad I’ve kept the X since 2018. Finally justifiable to upgrade. ❤
That’ll be a real nice upgrade!
Yes when you enable ProRAW it makes difference if you don’t it’s hard to see one. Not easy way to switch it on or off same as offloading the photo without iCloud. You also can’t chose JPEG with 48mpix either. Many limitations that makes it less of an upgrade to regular folks
The end result, after editing is the same though. ProRAW or the embedded doesn’t change what it would look like after the edit. Starting will be different, but the result will be the same. Also, for regular folk, you can still edit in the photos app on the iPhone, shooting in ProRaw doesn’t mean you have to use lightroom.
@@JonnyRoamsMaybe there is a third party app that would output proraw to jpeg so some details can be better preserved than on Apples binned 12 Mbpix at the fraction of the storage space but still cumbersome especially if you don’t take few photos but hundreds on your holiday - there should be a setting provided by Apple.
@@whitecrowuk575 high res files is always going to take up space and have a slow read out. If you’re just taking random snaps on holiday then in reality the 12mp option is probably enough for ya
@@JonnyRoams the point would be to have jpeg option for 48Mbpix, still would retain more details than Apples 12Mbpix jpeg while being considerably smaller. Quite possibly though their party camera apps will offer that though
@@whitecrowuk575 you can do it with a shortcut, go watch max tech, they explain it
I got an iPhone Pro Max for my birthday, about a week ago, and found its camera is quite comparable to my Pentax K-10dD.
so many people underestimate RAW. some old phones like the Huawei Nova 5T has 48MP RAW back in 2019. you could crop that (tripod stabilised) edited RAW shot to 0.5MP and it will still look good. I shot extremely detailed shots in the woods. all the leaves are clear and sharp. very nice shadow falloff. The RAW files are 96MB! so much detail in there when in the right hands. but I edited iphone 14 pro max raw files too. They got more dynamic range because of the stacked photos. but in terms of detail retention, the Nova 5T eats it. Reach me out if u wanna take a look at them. I'll be glad to send them to U :)
Hey man! Don't know if you remember me (sundri from guild wars :P). Stumbled across your channel going through old videos for nostalgia's sake and thought I'd say hi :) Impressive stuff you've got going on!
Of course I do mate!! You on discord??

great video! I'm almost certain that the 14 pro could easily output a print at 300+ppi to the size of that image behind you!
Show us some pixel peeping comparing your Sony with the iPhone, like how large of a print could I make with the iPhone compared with your Sony or my Nikon d780?
Cannon Beach - one of my favorite places on Earth. I proposed to my now wife right about where you are standing at the start of your vid.
Could you do a video on the process? e.g. what settings, which zoom level, how you pull into lightroom / what edits you may make there- all that stuff?
I use x1 most of the time as that is where you’ll get 48mp. Just posted a short going over a quick summary!
Can you do a video of your lights you use on your videos
48mp apple smart phone Informative.
I'm curious how much you think the quality is based on the software vs. camera hardware improvements. I noticed in low-light photos take a very long time to process... is it stacking images? Either way, very impressive.
I’m not sure if it’s because it’s low light but I definitely notice the 48 megapixel photos take a long time to process and I think that’s just because of the sheer size of the file!
You're right, the camera improvement on the 14 Pro and 15 Pro are significant, but you're also right, phone Cameras will never match up Pro Grade Cams. Optics will always win software enhancements.
The images are great on monitors, when you make 4ftx5ft prints I’ll stick with my Nikon 850 with my Otis. Make some BIG prints and then compare.
I actually have sold 24x36 prints of a couple photos I made with the iPhone. Apple also print billboards with iPhone photos. Good cameras are good. Good photographers are better.
Wonderful job
I would love to see a video of your Lightroom edit workflow for ProRAW images. I never seem to get it to a point I like.
I’m loving the iPhone 14 pro camera. The iPhone 11 Pro was my last phone, which I would say was a big leap in camera quality as well.
Same... im currently using iphone 11 so i have no idea what its like to experience pro or promax. Im planning to buy the iphone 14pro max this year but dont know if itll be worth it , or should i wait for the iphone 15.. (also the 14 series now is a lil bit cheaper so its fits my budget but if the new iphone comes out ofc the iphone 15 will be more expensive and i dont think i can afford that😂)
Have you ever owned the max size and if so what is your preference.Awesome review!!!!
How is the Lightroom ios app? Could you get the same/similar outcomes? Guessing you would be able to save a lot of time exporting your raw images
I need to get that phone asapppppp
I'm going from iphone 7 plus to 14 Pro Max. 7 years difference in iphone evolution. I am very curious...
That would be a wild upgrade

Great video and I am also a bit puzzled by the lack of buzz on the 48mp proraw pics this phone takes. They are fantastic !
That said I do not get why there is not a tool to easily convert them to a more compressed jpg for those who never or rarely uses Lightroom or similar tools. Can the Lightroom phone app do this ?
Like edit the photo, save as jpg in 48mp and then delete the original ?
Yep! The raw 48mp is between 50 and 93mb, and an edited jpeg is about a third to half those numbers in size.
cool video big fan of the page! may I ask what camera you used to shoot this video??
Thanks! I use the Sony a7iv

Lol. I still have my 7s plus! I guess I should consider upgrading. But my 7 is only 5 yrs and 6 months old.
Nice Vid 👍👍👍 Is that the pro max or pro ?
Why are so many ppl saying that it's not much of a change
I've had my 14 Pro Max for a week and am probably going to return it for an andoid. Why can't Apple allow us to go fully manual with the main camera like just about every other manufacturer on the planet?
I too have that issue, it is insane, there are supposedly some third party apps that can do full auto, I am going to see that path as a possibility, although paying monthly is not on, I agree with your comment pal
Thanks for the awesome video! I have got the iPhone 14 pro too but I am having a lot of issues with low light pictures….I don’t know why…I cleaned the lenses but still can’t set a focus on an object. Daytime works perfect. Also at Home when it’s dark it takes good pictures but for example when I want to take pictures at night from the sky or the moon the pictures look like they are made from a Samsung handy xD just kidding it really looks shitty…
The 14 pro is pretty amazing and it is the first iphone that I really want to have. Too bad young people without an income can only have it in their dreams.
Anyways, beautiful video! :)
In my perception, the 14 Pro Max is first of all a high school kids telephone, a fake status symbol. They work many hours filling shelves in the supermarket to get their hands on one. Especially for the poorer kids, they seem to gain respect for that, while the rich-kids are frawned upon if they have one.
@@lovemadeinjapan understand your point, but for me it's simply the first iphone, where nothing bothers me. I never got myself an iphone before, because a) i'm young and don't have the money for an iphone and b) there was always something i wasn't happy with
I don't care about status, but the 14pro in black is such a beautiful phone and one day i have enough savings to purchase one:)
Do you think this iphone 14 pro is a good tool for a tattoo artist to take pictures of the tattoos for posting on instagram or do you think the better option is to buy a Canon RP + 50mm lens (my budget)
Do you print images from your iPhone 14? I sold my Canon gear last year, and am heading to Iceland for the second time....with only my iPhone. I have a 12 and will most likely upgrade to at the 14. I print my work and also make travel books. I have carried camera backpacks full of gear for too many years. I'm ready for traveling light! I look forward to your response.
I have printed a couple 16x24 with my iphone 14 and they look fantastic! You should have no problem :)
Why on earth is there no full control for shutter speed etc, does anyone have a solution for the IPhone14 and full auto?
Great video! Have you found that in Portrait Mode the 14 Pro has a hard time focusing...? It happens to me often: even if I place the focus right on the desire object/subject... the phone can't focus properly. It didn't happen with my 11Pro... thoughts...?
I only tried portrait mode a couple of times, so I can’t speak on that unfortunately. However, a friend of mine had mentioned the same thing when they were trying to use portrait mode it could be a software issue that they might fix.
What are those flashing lights in the top left during the first few seconds of the video?
How about good iPhone 14 Pro shot raw tips? I've been using the raw feature on my iPhone 14 but when lifting shadows in lightroom the pixels aren't perfect or they seem broken, is there a solution?
When I shoot RAW I only see the RAW on my phone? Can someone tell me how to get both the JPEG & RAW?
Holy shit, is that rock formation real or did you drop that in from post? With the pony tail, it looks like a scene out of Vikings or some shit.
very real!

If that’s how you mention it because of the warmth and everything that iPhone 14 pro Max brings, how many GB would it be ideal to buy it? How many gigabytes did you buy?
I got 128gb but wish I went 256
Would be cool to see what the 48mp camera shots look like printed
Gonna test that next!
@@JonnyRoams awesome I don’t think any one else has really tested it yet so will be awesome to see :)

How do I convert ProRaw files to JPEG without the resolution getting lowered? My TV doesn't open Raw files, any solution?
Just change the image profile from Apple embedded -- which is pure raw, no photo magic -- to Apple Pro Raw … It let's you adjust the amount of photo magic and fixes the exposure.
Do you think 512gb is enough storage for the Pro res and raw? May i ask what size you purchased and are you wishing you went larger?
128 and I absolutely wish I got larger. 512 should be good!
pls i need scope of editing , i want to get a perfect editing pls explain .
Is that first shot on Cannon Beach in Oregon?
It sure is!
Im also finding the underexposure problem.
Check the pinned comment! Change the colour profile to ProRaw. It changes it to what you see in the photos app. However I did some tests and the end result after my edits is the same, it just makes it an easier start!
@@JonnyRoams Cheers mate!
I honestly feel like Apple should consider production of DSLR cameras. That would be truly exciting.
Completely agree. Or team up with Sony 👀
@@JonnyRoams Really!!
Camera raw нормально открывает
The ProRAW file is not under exposed. If you go into Develop and switch the profile from "Apple embedded profile" to "Apple ProRAW profile, I think you will find a well exposed image.
The raw file is underexposing to preserve the highlights. The ProRaw color profile actually bakes in some edits (set the slider to 0 and you’ll see the same dark raw image)
I would also point out that if you open the ProRAW file in Apple Preview, you will see that it is properly exposed. Since I am a print maker I use Bridge and Photoshop and have found that if I select the Apple ProRAW profile in Bridge, the file looks completely normal as a starting point. The only problem is opening the ProRAW file in an Adobe product and not switching from the Apple embedded profile to the Apple ProRAW profile.
BTW...I agree with you that there is a bug...however...I don't believe that the bug is in the Apple ProRAW fiIe...rather, I believe that the bug is that the Adobe product is applying the wrong profile when it opens the file. Switching to the Apple ProRAW profile overcomes this bug.
The latest update to both Bridge, Photoshop, Camera RAW, and Lightroom now corrects the bug I mentioned in the last reply. All of the Adobe products now open a Apple ProRAW file with the Apple ProRAW profile and as you can see the exposure is now normal. BUG FIXEDl...
The Sony won’t disturb your workflow with every 10% battery drop :-)
How is the battery in your hand? Could it stand for long periods?
Yeah it’s decent. The always on display definitely hinder performance. But for myself I often drive long distance daily so it gets plugged in frequently
Yeah, it was underexposed, but Adobe already fixed it in the most recent release. 😉
good to know thanks!
Need to change profile from Apple Embedded to Apple ProRAW
Yep
some say it is bad don’t buy it and some say buy it. It’s awesome so I think I’ll just buy it selling my iPhone 12.
In the iPhone camera settings do you use high efficiency or most compatible
High efficiency
You are comparing Raw files to the 13Pro. What about straight out of camera jpgs?
Definitely cleaner and sharper - but I honestly don’t use jpegs
@@JonnyRoams they are using a Sony sensor I believe.
Sold! You just made Apple another 1300 euros haha
I would think those tiny photo sites would be noisy unless the light is perfect.
That’s what I thought, but the photos are very clean even in low light
They normally would be but a lot is going on behind the scenes, let me elaborate. The sensors are BSI and stacked and readout is very fast. Apple is using the fast sensor readout in combination with their Neural Engine image pipeline to process multiple exposures taken from the camera in several 10s of milliseconds. The Apple ProRAW is not really a single exposure image. They are (probably) doing things like mean averaging to push detail into those shadows while retaining highlights. And probably many other more advanced things.
Do u think this is better than a gh5?
Maybe for a beginner
I'm upgrading to the 14 max pro from my 6S+ so it's a no-brainer. I'm less and less inclined to lug around my DSLR these days. That said, Tony Northrup brings up real issues regarding Apples marketing. To start, the 48MP is not accurate according to Tony. He talks about the quad-Bayer sensor...48MP are still just 12MP. He also brings up the math calculation and the focal length. I'm not a pro photographer. I assist and will take behind the scenes shots and am looking to use more video. The DSLR is still king for landscape which is what I most enjoy. Thanks for the review!
it is so good that I kept my 13 pro.

@@JonnyRoams billboard
@@fiirasmusic5366 have you ever stood next to a billboard up close?
@@JonnyRoams man, I’m just asking why the camera is able to do it
Please post some DNG files. UA-cam ruins every detail. I have to say that out-of-camera JPEGs are plain garbage, especially the macro shots are obnoxious with the Apple AI treatment. But macro might not improve much in DNG, as the macro shots are taken with the wide-angle, and lack any DOF by nature of a 13mm equivalent lens. I was already used to underexposed 40+mpixel phone shots for some time, my Lumia 1020 from 2013 takes great DNG's. On a DSLR a sensor usually has a 100 and a 400iso mode, on phones they only take 100 iso shots. The iso you can select in a manual exposure app just limits the dynamic range when making JPEGs. So 3200 iso basically means, use the 1/32th darkest part of the 14-bit DNG range and expand that to full 0-255 8-bit JPEG range.
Great video Jonny, nice comparisons! Quick question: how do you move the images to LR? It’s a small point, but I’m doing too many steps! I’d appreciate if you or others could comment. Thanks. Geoff
