I agree. I hate science influencers who talk like they're teaching kindergarteners. Most of them only tell you things you've already heard 1000 times. Maybe in the 90s, most of the adult population just didn't know anything, but today, anybody who is interested knows a great deal of the basics. We want to hear about new things, and it's always something new here.

As a geologist, this scenario would make sense, but one key fundamental thing has been left out. Subduction zones bring water into the asthenosphere/upper mantle. This lowers the melting temperature of the surrounding rock and thus, trigger partial melting of the upper mantle . It would take quite a bit to slow subduction zones to completely cease partial melting and therefore, the upper crust and asthenosphere becoming more solid and stop plate tectonics. I think the sun would burn us to a crisp before it reaches the red giant phase in its stellar evolution before plate tectonics completely stop. While earth is losing heat, it's not at the rate where within a billion years, it's going to slow down plate tectonics significantly enough where the geodynamo will be effected and its ability to generate a strong magnetic field to protect earth from the sun's stellar wind.

Also worth noting is that Venus has an extremely weak magnetic field, is closer to the Sun where the solar wind is much stronger, yet has an atmosphere that is 93x denser than Earth's.
Even with no magnetic field at all, the Earth would not lose all its atmosphere, only a fraction of it. Higher concentrations of heavy gases, like carbon dioxide, could prevent any loss, even increase it.

And despite what scientists might try to appear to be to the contrary, we still know next to nothing about the true properties and make up of our own core, much less that of any other planetary body. Humans have not yet even managed to probe even a mile into the crust. I think Theia has a huge role in why we still have a viable planet.
It mixed everything, trapped an enormous amount of extra heat down there, some bits and pieces are still boiling off (which actually might be the kickstarter for convection in the first place) and that all might have kept volcanism around for longer.
Still just a theory that many subscribe to, but there's no reason it would have hampered development of life instead of aiding it. Life certainly doesn't predate it.

This assumes that the magnetism & the heat dynamo are separate processes when in reality they are a closed loop process feeding off each other due to swirling electric currents in the outer core. Just studying the heat conductivity of 1 mineral isn’t enough to come to the conclusion that the core is losing heat faster than originally thought.

Humanity can make an artificial magnetic field with a simple (but gigantic) coil around the equator. This pharaonic electromagnet could be powered with solar panels along it's path. Since half the earth is always illuminated, the coil will always be powered. Another design possible is to make a smaller electromagnet at L1 point.

Honestly I'd expect panspermia to be quite viable from the deep biosphere and over geologic timescales evolving into more active surface dwelling life.

Reminds me of a former Secretary of Defense & his recitation of "known unknowns" & "unknown unknowns." So here we have another previously-unknown factor that may figure into the ongoing _Killing Earth_ sweepstakes. (There's one for Bill O'Reilly!) I knew core cooling was potentially a long-term problem separate from the sun but had no idea of the timing. Seems we still don't know what that might be, but keeping our planet cool enough on the outside & warm enough on the inside look like projects for planetary engineers. Yes, they're pretty scarce in our solar system now, but a billion years should be enough time to find or create them.
Failing that, spreading terrestrial biology around could prove a decent backup plan.

  • @PaulSpades

We wouldn't even know if the sun grew on average over last year. The sun's "volume" is not directly measurable, and the photosphere's radius is also not measured in recent times, it is considered fixed at 696,340km with 0.5% anual variability depending on where Earth is in its orbit.
Volume is in quotes, because the solar system is a part of Sol, but its outer boundary is usually chosen as the photosphere, or the corona if it suits the astronomers. Very rarely somebody mentions the heliosphere, which we are inside of. Not that anything could observe the boundary layers of the heliosphere - we can't measure it in any way since Voyager (presumably) passed trough it.
Anyway, have fun with the eclipse, John!

Hey John, for some reason your videos are muted when auto-playing here on YT, so I can't watch them at work. Any chance you can fix that? Thanks, love the channel.

This video made me want to curl up catlike next to your growling drone voice and dream of the end of worlds. Then wake, stretch and scribble the lyrics of half forgotten songs I heard while visiting Venus before its death.

The Drake Equation misses so many terms that the answer to Fermi's Paradox is becoming a logical sum of them all: Magnesium, Phosphorus, Oxygen levels, double cell membrane, Eukaryotes, lipids, RNA, sex, multicellular complex organisms, moon tides, volcanism, the K-T mass extinction ... Jeez! There ar so many that if you sum that all it's amazing how rare is the chance that we are even here, let alone for this to happen again in another world - concomitantly to us (relatively in time). No way there are other intelligent tech beings out there at a reachable distance; I must add.

Listening to these videos brings home just how insignificant all our concerns are in the long run. It's sobering: indeed,it's frightening; but it's true.
So let's just try to enjoy what we have, whilst we have it.

Your usual fabulous program here is remarkable and insightful! What is curious is that the shifting magnetic poles and diminishing magnetosphere that we currently enjoy is front page news of real concern to space-watchers and armchair astronomers. How timely to see our JMG cite it as a likely cause of extinction. Regardless, the magnetic anomalies underway bear watching. Thanks, JMG.

this must mean our magnetosphere is temperature sensitive so we need the heat from the sun to delay the earths core and mantle cooling, which could be even faster were the earth to become a wandering planet without a star for example.

There has to still be mantle dynamics on venus to still be volcanic activity. Assuming venus is approximately the same age as earth, it would have cooled to just a lump of rock by now unless something is creating or driving the heat dynamics. At least that's the way it would seem to an aircraft technician.
