No idea why this has escaped me for so long. Some of the best musicians ever to grace a stage. One of the finest 10 minutes I ever spent. If you don't feel the blues, it's too late for you 'cause you're already dead.

This takes me back to 1962 when I hitch hiked from Durham University to London. I visited the Marquis theatre in Soho London and heard John Lee Hooker for the first time and I was mesmerized. I could only just afford to pay for the concert ticket but I know I had to see him again. Also featured the Rolling Stones together with John Lee Hooker - I thought I had arrived in Heaven and debated why should I complete my degree in Engineering at Durham. But reality finally intruded and I realized I had to earn a living as an Engineer to enjoy this heaven. Now nearly 60 years later, I can enjoy this music in retirement in California. Thnx.

Just went to see Buddy Guy in Dayton earlier this week, and he was vehement about how the British saved many of those blues artists like John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Son House, Leadbelly, etc., by giving them a platform and an audience in the UK that they could not get on the US white owned radio and TV stations. Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones brought Muddy Waters over to the US to play with them on tour, and essentially no one had ever heard of him. I used to go and see The Yardbirds (with Eric Clapton) at the Star pub in Thornton Heath, and they would have Sonny Boy Williamson, a black harmonica player, with them. We loved those American blues and R&B performers and the music they brought with them, and most UK bands adopted many of their songs.

Led Zep bluntly stole dem ole' kozmic bloos, whereas R. Stones paid their dues to these "forgotten", sometimes broke and/or sick bloos giants by doing things like collaboration LPs, and touring with The Hook at age 72 or 77 (nobody knows his real age...). Kudos to them, although I've never been a fan...

I remember it like yesterday. I called to get tickets but couldn't get two tickets next to each other, so I bought them separate. We walked in Atlantic City's Convention Center (my girlfriend and I) and handed the Ushers our tickets, they walked her towards the back and walk me to the very front row.
I couldn't believe that I was touching the stage. I can still see John Lee Hooker's index finger spinning around in circles. I will never forget that, he was leaning over me when he was leaning towards the audience.
We saw 6 shows on the Steel Wheels tour. The opener at Veterans Stadium Philadelphia, three shows at Atlantic City's Convention Center and two shows at Shea Stadium Queens New York.
That was 1989, I was only 25 years old. Thanks John Lee RIP, Brother.

Some of the notes might have been wrong but he still knew how to put on a show. Give it to the Stones for reintroducing a lot of the blues from America back to America. Their early albums are filled with the blues, including "Little Red Rooster" which I think was an older song redone by them.
