- In this episode, I discuss why Universal Music Group is removing music from TikTok. From the New York Times: "Universal Music Group, the world’s largest music company, said it would revoke the licenses for its vast catalog of songs from TikTok after its current contract expires on Wednesday if the two companies could not reach a new deal addressing Universal’s concerns over artist compensation, artificial intelligence and other issues."

The poster boy for that is Prince, a man ahead of his time, who restricted his music to the point that I never got to listen to it or want it. It was his decision and I respected it.

@@DMSProduktions Yup, there is plenty of music I originally found out or got into through what would be called unsavory means. Most of it I went on to spend tons of money on albums, concerts, etc. after founding out about it.
All in all it’s a sad story for music… last year was the first year young music students complaint about the length of the songs we played during the lesson at music school. Several students said to me please let’s only play songs which aren’t longer then 60 or 90 seconds. I was totally devasted to hear something so absolutely stupid of my students… and all of them are heavy TikTok users. So what can I say: I hate TikTok

Sorry but this just sounds like a bit of a boomer take? Of course students want less work. Every other subject is giving them work. But for even for beginners of all ages, we've been giving them short songs for years. Mary Had a Little Lamb, Yankee Doodle etc. and it's because doing something short and repeatable is much easier to building findamentals than long songs requiring memorization. They graduate to longer pieces when they have the skill for it.
There's lots of really good reasons to dislike Tiktok, the negative engagement loop, the hive of misinformation, cultivating art as disposable, the painful promotion cycles artists have to go through now which no one enjoys watching or doing.
Short songs just isn't one of them.

Millions of younger generations are getting exposed to classic music and artists through reaction videos on UA-cam and yet the record labels frequently take them down. Shows how clueless these companies are and out of touch with the public.
We need more Bandcamp, and less UMG & TikTok.

Bandcamp was bought by Songtradr last fall and a month later they laid off half of the employees.
This whole thing bothers me. I think tiktok is a very awful platform, but something about only a few music companies owning the majority of the entire music catalog, and them deciding where music is allowed to be used or not, also seems wrong. I don't know which party to root for. In fact I don't like both parties.
Despite consolidation in the music industry and record companies buying so many artists music catalogs, it is still up to the artists themselves if they sign agreements with those labels and publishers. Tic Tok and AI do not give anything to the artists, no matter how much of their work is used (unless forced to - like the previous agreement between UMG and Tic Tok, which does not apply to AI generated "art"). Seems fairly clear cut which is worse for anyone that makes art.
There are 1156 things wrong with UMG, and yet they are still better and less evil than TikTok.

It's baffling to me in that over the last 25 years the major labels are still dominating music. An entire indie ecosystem should have emerged from the internet and yet if anything it's gone backwards. Why are audiences still under the mainstream spell?
The average listener is just a consumer that wants to mindlessly listen to whatever is thrown at him - a small portion of people actually seek out new and interesting content.
The internet ecosystem emerged, but people didn't really care.
It's the same with any media really, folks just get comfortable with the big couple services and ignore all others.
The majority love to conform and will listen to whatever is made popular. Doesn't help than its hard work to find good music now.
The governing philosophy and culture has changed drastically. Frank Zappa said it best when he talked about how it used to be aging businessmen with cigars and suits that ran the industry in the 50's and 60's. They didn't have a clue or care about telling artists what music to make, they just wanted hipfire profits which means a lot of different music was given a chance. Yet they're still the lesser evil compared to the industry climate now. Presently, it's dictated by fairly narcissistic and artistically self-imposed young hip dudes that have the power to tell the population what music to listen to. The diverse palette of different music that used to be offered to the mainstream, has now been reduced to independent artists and struggling UA-cam musicians hidden away in the algorithm with 300 subscribers.

these are some of my fav videos, Rick. Artists, record companys and technology fighting. And you provide insight.
This really reminds me of the Music Industry Vs Google once they acquired UA-cam but with a AI bend. There's a dangerous notion that a short clip or piece of music (under 20 sec) can't be claimed by copyright or taken down. Big media and big artists have never been keen for others to piggyback onto their coin. Greed is always good with mega media.
AI is the wrench in the works. If this kerfuffle prompts some curtailing of its parasitic nature, all other parties are better for it.
American greed, as usual. It's pathetic!
But, wait a minute, how much is Goggle worth? All those clips of music bring viewers which bring ad dollars to Google. It's been like this since the beginning, with these internet companies acting like, oh, we are trying so hard to fight the good fight against the greedy music companies, while raking in huge amounts of money off the backs of pretty much all content owners, not just the music companies.
A quick check shows UMG's value as fifty something billion and Google's as 1.7'ish trillion dollars. I'm having trouble figuring how how UMG is the greedy one, or the greedier one anyway.

Don't support any platforms that rip off their users content. They monetise your hard work, and either don't pay you, or if you have are beyond wildly popular they pay an absolute pittance. Boycott.
The problem is, the vast majority of people wont do that. They keep using platforms that rip them off, while complaining about it. I lose sympathy.

That was never a thing on the news until 2000.
Still, though, the groundwork for modern file sharing technologies was being set thirty years prior, and the music industry ignored it.. and then once modern compression and encoding came along the music industry still continued to ignore it.. and then when broadband became more widely adopted and storage costs plummetted they still kept continuing to ignore it, as if it might all just go away somehow, all the way up until the first lawsuits which were in the news leading into and all throughout 1999, i.e. "the late nineties" and well into 2000, 2001 etc... It's just like a continued pattern of repeatedly finding every possible way to not embrace the new thing, to not do what is best for you and your artists and fans and creators and everyone involved - and instead always opting to do the thing that hurts the largest possible number of people, all over their new yacht needing to be 130 feet instead of 120 feet.. I say f*ck major labels and f*ck the people that run them. All we're doing is feeding the bellies of the fat pigs perpetually perpetrating abuses and exploitations of the artists we say we love so much. @chrisrj9871

As a music professor, I hate tiktok. Kids come to me only wanting to learn a chorus or a few seconds of music.
If you work at an institution, there's nothing you can do about it. You need to teach whatever you're required to teach.
However, if you do private, one-to-one lessons, grab the opportunity and adapt: tuition takes shorter for a chorus or riff than for a whole song or to understand all the theory behind. They just want to learn to play or sing that part. Preparing that short part takes you really much shorter than preparing a whole song. So you can charge students for shorter periods of «flash» tuition, let's say 30 minutes instead of an hour, and profit from having more students per day, while enjoying more free time because you have to work way less preparing the brief material they want to learn.
That period I was a part-time guitar teacher I had to understand I had to teach my students what they wanted to learn, not what I wanted to teach.
@@riangarianga You've hit the nail on the head. At the moment I teach Piano to 75 kids a week one-to-one 20min lessons. All other teachers locally doing similar stuff. Just think it's a bit sad that they only listen to snippets of songs.

Greedy vs Greedy. I do reviews on my channel and they almost always get flagged for copyright disputes despite engaging in legitimate fair is as is my lawful right affirmed by fair use law & rulings. Both these companies can go f themselves. UA-cam too.

One of the great things about now days as a musician is you don’t need record label anymore to promote your music. But it is frustrating when you want to do a cover song on any platform it gets blocked by those companies.Especially if the creator put a lot of time and effort into it. Love the videos Rick keep up the great work.
Not having it is not equal to not needing it. You can publish anything you want on the internet, but forget about local promotion and concerts.
They were always needed, it's just that the most little ones got converted into payed promotion services because they can't afford the risk of promoting new artists. The root of it is the death of the disc. Nobody buying? Then nobody selling. Free singles for everybody and 90€ tickets for a concert.
Nowadays music is considered by most people as a free asset, but they will pay an expensive ticket to see them live.

Ted Gioia just had a substack post on Universal vs TicToc among other related toipcs (copyright, etc). As always he makes some very interesting points on how regardless of the UMG/TicTok dispute resolves, the creator/artists will continue to the "on the menu" and not at the dinner table.
When it comes to things like this, I always like watching your videos because you always keep up-to-date on current events involving music. And I have to say that I actually agree. I do think that this isn’t gonna last very long. I feel like this will last a couple weeks to a couple months at best. For a lot of artists, both big and small TikTok is a major source of music advertising for a lot of the smaller artist it’s their only source of advertising because it’s the fastest way to go viral. Even big name, artist will suffer a little bit maybe not as much as the smaller artist but no one’s winning in this situation, so they will be forced to come up with a solution very soon.
Your insight and understanding of the music industry is amazing, thank you for such a concise summary of the situation.

Big music companies have NEVER looked out for the artist ! In more cases than not the artists themselves had to fight for any penny they got and the Big Companies were always on the look out for some sneaky contract that would benefit them only and smile really really big to get the SIGN UP ! Many artists told these companies to go shove it and started labels of their own . Some made it big while others flopped. Have not thought about any of this for some great time but your video brought back what I knew from the early . Yeah I am not anyone of note but a guitar and flute and bass and piano player and a music lover . :O)

I’m your age Rick. As every generation says, I’m glad I grew up when I did. I only use Facebook and UA-cam for social media. There is way too much out there to absorb. Glad you and others provide the content that you feel is worthy. All the old business models are disappearing. But memories will always remain.

Imagine artists from way back in the day that are struggling financially now and all of a sudden a Tiktok or UA-cam video goes viral and these folks are making money from recordings they did 40-50 years ago like the Fleetwood Mac song you referenced. Not that Fleetwood Mac is hurting but many artists are unfortunately.
I honestly feel it's much more rare that older songs get a resurgence in popularity. All I see are the same top 40 garbage in these TikTok videos.

Small Royalties being paid to bands is one reason they now re-record their Hit Songs for say commercials etc... so the Band gets Paid
I've always heard Sly and the Family Stone made more money for the Toyota commercial than they earned as artists in their entire career to that point.
Almost all top tier musicians are overpaid. The majority of musicians working day to in pubs and clubs are underpaid.
@@steveinn423 this is not really true. Major musical acts get more money from touring and having their songs placed in ads, than they make in royalties from the record labels and publishers. Comparing pub bands to major artists is apples to oranges - because they have no royalties from labels and publishers, and rarely play the main stage on a large tour.

Totally agree about catalogue music and the TikTok effect - even Charles Cornell found Our old favourite Crystal Waters because of the slickback video sample (which we oldies recognised immediately and told our kids that this used to be OUR music!) 😅
Well, and it's not just TikTok and YT...it's also video games as well. I constantly see posters going "GoW (or Fallout 4, or whatever) brought me here." I mean, who knew Wonder Woman Lynda Carter was a singer and has her own catalogue? I didn't, until I went looking on YT after hearing her in F4.
Plus, when an old song gets popular, the song will be pushed out to where it’s unbearable.
Buy music the old school way like in LP’s and CD’s - and support our beloved Rick with a 👍🏻🙌🏻🤘🏻
Ultimately, we, the artists, do have the ability to own our masters and totally bypass the labels completely by having profitable careers independently. Let's build that option together ✌️
Even if you own your masters, who will buy your music and how, enough to continue your career? UNDER the top of the iceberg it's a disaster for artists/musicians. Even artists/bands on the top of the iceberg are selling their back catalogs. Touring and merch? If you have enough fans: ok. But what about aging? And who will pay your touring manager (and your team)? One cannot be artist + songwriter + lawyer + (record) producer + manager + graphic designer + distributer + A&R + promo, business and production expert + mixing and mastering monster +++ Don't get me wrong: I am with you, but, what are the consequences of your "option"? Not all labels are "Dogs". We are living in a time that tons of artists must be very lucky that an (honest pro-artist) label even "wants" to sign "some" of them. I guess approx. 50.000 songs are released each day... Please, read on Wiki the Laws of Gossen.

At least Universal is ‘saying’ what needs to be said - protecting real human artists from AI. Their motives may not be pure but that message and (most importantly) sticking by it is paramount.

Most artists don't need to care about this since their income comes from concerts and sponsors, and TikTok/IG/YT make them popular and visible
@@antonioravina How can it be stopped? There was no way to stop autotune, while it often sounds horrible to me, it seems a lot of people like it. AI produced music sounds horrible to me, but I can see it becoming popular. Most modern music is heavily influenced by past music, so trying to claim AI is doing something worse than that, isn't going to be easy.

This is rich coming from a corporation that lost some of the most precious master tapes in contemporary music through it's own managerial incompetence.

Besides the limitations of growth, which the labels have always initiated, even huge bands, with intentions of growing the art and sound of music, in rock music, traditional bands like RHCP or U2 or even the Rolling Stones had to atone with their own shareholders needs; I don't see how Universal isn't doing the same and how it's not also modern "payola" isn't happening between device companies and platform companies and search engine companies and marketing companies and promo companies and on down the layers of the onion; We are not selling musical product anymore (recordings are just a vehicle for an entire alternative business)..
The vulnerability of artists to having their creative identify is already wide open for speculation, since Meta claims ownership to specific elements of the intellectual property rights, which was also the center of the debate within the Motion Picture strikes;, and the entire argument over who owns what regarding INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS, to which you are absolutely correct about the dual necessity tik tok and Universal share; And that's being polite, considering how fucked the music industry already is; but music industry doesn't seem to want to come to terms with the duality that the motion picture industry. This last long strike, isn't exactly settled, and the lack of information surrounding it doesn't leave a hope or a good taste in the mouths of actual creators, who have to learn how to make ends meat 8 different ways just to afford to get by, let alone have time to master their craft in their literal "down time" whatever that means, and now there's more pressure to be this all-in-one machine, which means more time away from mastering your instrument ( vocals included). I am or was (hard to say given the circumstances) in a great band and it's hard and next to impossible to have direction post covid, since there's also an emphasis on promotion companies monopolizing the venues where underground bands, for a time, were able to function and develop like they should. Rick, I hear and see so much from you and enjoy it, all these pod-casters out there who get these already well known and famous people to come and talk about their experiences, and it's like the Smith's song ".. and the music that they constantly plays, says nothing to me about my life.." .. I'll come and talk to you, I have alot to say and debate coming from someone, who constantly is in a good situation, yet can't find grounds to stand on and the context of this video is something I feel I know alot about and all of musicians know what is actually going on.. Which is musicians and real creatives are always going to be mistreated, hustled and looked down upon by the people who "pay for everything" or so that's how it's still shaping out to be.. Who's hand is the one that feeds me!? Elvis was right... Costello.. Nothing will change unless the creatives take control of ownership and that's, thus far a loosing battle, unless your music has been profiteering since the 60's and even then, we'd have to talk in circles before broaching the subject about how disenfranchised Black artists have been taken for many many many rides and yet are still the artists most responsible for changing music in every era, dating back to the BAROQUE period and continuing today, even more clear as every pop music "greatest of all time" list. Love this Rick, but would it if you started having real conversations with musicians and creatives who are in the underground and talented, but unfortunately aren't able to afford their parents paying for expensive LA and NYC rent while they "decide" if music is the rifght career path for them. What about real artists Rick? There used to be many of self taught people who had interesting things to say and now the industry is all entitled kids who are swell at video games, but have absolutely nothing to say because everything is handed over. Meanwhile Universal swallows up real talent and holds their intellectual property rights for 7+ years, even after theyve dropped them, in order to keep shoveling the sugar coded crap that is a sure fire seller. As someone who has been writing about indie artists for the last 14 years I think I love this. Maybe it will force Tik Tok to find other sources of great music and f*ck there is so much phenomenal music being self produced with NO record deals. I don't know, in the end I have a feeling that indie artists will always be disrespected.
Have you heard of the IndieSleaze movement? The entire early 2000’s indie scene is being catalogued on Insta. Indie band The Go! Team are f*+*+*g AMAZING.

Yes Rick, there is a symbiotic relationship between different media and talent agencies (labels) a good example is Cannons - Fire for You and how that blew up after the Netflix show Never Have I Ever, Or the Running up that hill Netflix - stranger things ( It is just wonderful to see the recognition these inspirational artists deserve come to fruition) and especially wonderful that a new generation discovered Kate Bush.
Now would be a good time for UA-cam to stop being idiots with UA-cam Shorts and allow more than one minute videos to truly compete with TikTok. They should have been king of shortform videos.

This is reminiscent of the fighting going on between some pre-1972 artists and oldies radio stations in the 1990s. Flo and Eddie were at the forefront of a battel which started just as music radio was taking a downturn in profitability. Turtles music mostly disappeared from radio for a while. Not good for either side.
One thing TikTok has over all other social media platforms is the ability for different people to use duet to create full songs in a large collaboration. I’ve done this quite successfully with other artists and it works well. The independent musicians are still out there. We’re using TikTok as a collaborative tool to get our names out into the forefront while the big labels pull their music.

The most interesting aspect of this dispute Rick only mentioned in passing. That would be the royalty "dilution" effect of having millions of AI created songs sharing the single royalty "pool". That would necessarily mean reduced royalties for human artists.
I was wondering if anyone would catch that. The AI generation of music is most obviously going to keep diluting the original artists royalties, because it steers consumers away from the source materials.

@@gabigolescu technology no one collects "royalties" from the AI generated music, all revenue goes directly to the originator(s) of the AI works - without the middleman of "recording labels" or "publishers". It is why these things are proliferating like crazy.
This is the 2020s. Streaming royalties are rubbish for all artists except the megafauna. AI will make it a bit worse.

If I were a billionaire I would buy all the catalogs that these big record companies own. I would then either give the artists back their songs, or if the artists are dead, put the music into public domain with the stipulation that no one can make money off of it. If anyone wanted to use it in a for-profit endeavor, they would have to pay a mechanical license to rerecord it. That money would then have to be split between the artists who play on the new recording and to the original, deceased artists families.
Also, if creators want to be paid/be paid more from a certain platform; a good start would be move to a different platform that does. The only way to change a companies policy is to hit them were it hurts, their pocketbooks.

It’s really not that different from Instagram or UA-cam. The algorithm is different, and you need to give it a bit of time to learn what you like.
It's just social media. It's like Facebook or Instagram or UA-cam, but it's shorter videos and the userbase is younger. ....I've noticed it generally promotes creating new content (kinda like UA-cam) versus Facebook which is moreso documenting family life.
The mainstream musical landscape is just unlistenable.

I love music but hate dealing with major labels, especially as a struggling musician. We are single entity players in the studio, and when we're lucky to get the gig, we don't come with lawyers on call to help, only the local musicians union after the fact. 😢

I noticed independent labels are now 30% up just a bit from a few years ago. Copyright is a legit thing, but I wonder if it protects artists or just owners. Seems too often artists are lost in the mix even though they are the face, the voice, and (used to be) the sound that drives the whole thing. The AI angle is weirdly poignant, how quickly did that start impacting things? There was an election in Slovakia recently impacted by AI as well. It’s a big challenge.
This is why many of us stopped pursuing a music carreer long ago. Well, at least I did ;-D
I'm no musical genious ... or in general, but going through the eternal struggle and process of being a musician/singer-songwriter ... just to get shafted by everyone else in the business b4 (IF you're extremely lucky) making it BIG TIME ... let's just say, there were other options that were far more attractive to someone, who wasn't quite 'possessed' enough ;-) LOVE your content and insight, though 🙂

Sadly as you have indicated, the labels and social media platforms in general are continuing to do what they've done to most musical artists for decades. It's a sexual term that describes what they're up to (...and I won't repeat here) but it's not a pleasant experience.
I was actually happy to hear this. Let Universal pull all their music from tiktok forever. More opportunity for tiktok users to discover more independent music. Universal is being indignant & greedy imo. That they are looking out for their artists is laughable. Having said this I think all the social media platforms are ripping off the artists in general.
Challenging consider that the artists’ creative efforts are paid in pennies over Spotify and Tiktok… now you have a big corporate monster pulling music as well. If you love an artist, pick up their vinyl or pay $ to buy a few songs! This is why neither model is good for making a living as an artist. Artists should be praised and rewarded for their efforts just like a doctor, lawyer etc.

Okay a skateboarding cranberry juice clip launched a track from a band that didn't need any more money, Fleetwood Mac, back into the charts. Great that a new generation gets into the music but not worth the price of entry which is the existence of TikTok and short-form video content in general. As a species we already have the attention span of a goldfish these days, so while this - as Rick points out - is just two unpleasant wolves fighting over the carcass of music, it doesn't really matter who wins as music is already losing anyway. 30 second jingles with some arsehole dancing to them? Yeah, that's inspiring lol. Death to the short form video - torches and pitchforks time 😂

music industry has been skydiving since MTV. went from music to music videos to videos with music to short content. where is the real music? its is in the gutter. no body cares about actual music that doesn't require music videos or tiktoks or content being shoved down to your throat by the artists social media accounts every day.
My first reaction to this was shock followed by a feeling of apathy because you're right, it can't go on for too long. Someone like Olivia Rodrigos career was built in part from her songs being so viral on Tik Tok, and I can only imagine what kind of return on investment that was for the major label.
Record labels are so greedy they don’t even know what is really good for them
In the late 70s the recording industry lobbied for a $1 surcharge on blank cassette tapes because the sound quality had gotten high enough to challenge vinyl and people were recording their own or their friends' albums onto tape to play in their car, etc. Similarly, the publishing companies hounded music venues and cover bands to pays taxes and copyright fees. In both cases the industry parties failed to grasp the value of all the free promotion of their product and went for the short-term cash grab. Corporate greed, in a nutshell. I can't count how many albums I purchased after recording a friend's album that I wouldn't have bought otherwise.
When your product is actually a person's ability to listen to something then copying tapes or using songs in TikTok shorts, is not free promotion....it's free use! Not only that but it's different because TikTok is getting wealthy off of these shorts. At least when a person copied a tape they weren't making money every time they played it.....but these social platforms are making money when shorts/videos are being watched and often it's the music that really makes the video.
The only people who are going to profit from this are the lawyers for both sides. Win or lose, they always get paid.
