*Do you agree with Dean when it comes to frequency of water changes?* Also, check out his last fish room tour if you missed it: ua-cam.com/video/s2aGAHyuyJs/v-deo.html
For the most part, yes. Personally, I struggle with water changes and can't set up an auto-change system because of my ridiculously high pH. Setting up an R.O. system is out of the question because of that. I try compensating by raising hardy fish and growing GOBS of plants. This will do until I perfect my rainwater filtration setup. Alternately, I'm looking into aquaponics as a means of providing a constant source of high quality water, because the results of regular water changes really does speak for itself, especially when you see how healthy his fish are. I've only seen a couple setups where zero water changes happened - but the tanks were so LUSH with healthy plants it almost made you sick to look at all the green. Plus the fish load was very light. In the end I think consistency is more important than frequency. I've shocked a tank in the past by suddenly doing multiple weekly heavy water changes.
Cory, you have taken a small company and turned it into a thriving growing business. One of my co workers knows your silent business partner and for him to believe & invest in you has produced dividends beyond your expectations. Having Dean, Jimmy & Randy in your employ has just added so many benefits for Aquarium Co-op. Keep up the hard work my friend.

Dean and Cory; Why would anyone send you hate mail? You are doing a fantastic job of helping people raise fish. Nobody has all the answers, but you have logic and experience on your side.
Definitely like how Corey surrounds himself with people that have talent and knowledge, very smart trait of a businessman. Dean also has that likeable personality..... Good team!!!
The hate mails and that guy Dean was talking about arguing with himself on a forum just to start something makes me mad. The more I meet people, the more I like my animals. Gotta agree on that on some level.
I appreciate Dean calling out incorrect information and those on forums. Unfortunately, there are a lot of beginners on the forums and even youtube offering misinformed information. Thanks for another great video.
It’s amazing how many common interests people in fish keeping have. He’s also into motor sports and a chef. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is a baker too. Edit: Dean stated he doesn’t bake at 17:18.
This video only served to solidify my belief that you two fellows are the best thing ever for the fish-keeping hobby. Cory and Dean - thank you for all you do!!!!
I LOVE that Cory and Dean can talk about their love of fish keeping together and be so open about the past experiences. This is what newbies to the hobby really want to hear. Thank you both for shariing your knowledge and most importantly your friendship with us!
Really pleasant interview. I would have liked to have heard and seen, Cory ask follow-up questions to Deans response. Some of Deans answers needed a deeper clarification to fully grasp his ideas and ideals behind the hobby. Dean's struggle with the Zebra Plecos was RAW and REAL. It gave substance and a realistic understanding behind the Master.
Cory, you are such an interesting, knowledgeable nice person. I love how you explain things with examples. Dean, you are an amazing individual. Knowledge and passion brought together for the different hobbies you share is so cool. Great video
Thank you for doing this interview, even though it was 95 degrees in Dean's house!! It was riveting! You guys are awesome, I am so happy to be a Nerm! I have been keeping fish since I was 11 years old, but the level of my hobby has soared because of Aquarium Co-op and Dean's influence! Oh, and I've always been a believer in regular W/C's. Even with heavily planted tanks. My fish seem revived, extra boisterous after a proper W/C!
I absolutely love when Dean appears on FishTube! He is a treasure, as is anyone in the hobby possessing such a wealth of knowledge. Videos with this type of casual banter, often lead to side conversations that may reveal tips and hidden advice that make my life in my fish room easier, and for that I thank you, Aquarium Co-op Team. Yaaay Dean!
I knew there was a reason I liked Dean. Computer consultant here that loves to cook, wanted to open a restaurant until covid hit, and I started breeding fish last year.
I really enjoy every video Cory is in, as I learn something new every single time. But when Dean is involved, it's the cherry on top! Super cool dude! I wish I could get some of his "family goldfish plant".
Of all the people who do streams and blogs from Aquarium Coop, I enjoy Dean’s the most. I’m a big fan of Master Breeder Dean. I enjoy him keeping his secrets to himself. Has Dean ever considered doing a Freshwater guide to breeding fish? I would love to do one of those South American trips to the Amazon, or one of its tributaries with you guys. Ever consider letting Aquarium Coop go franchise to the East Coast? Do you accept volunteers to work in LPS or warehouse? I’m so happy for all your success. Godspeed!
Nice to hear perspective from a fellow old timer, albeit he's done more than me,definitely appreciate his enthusiasm in promoting the hobby,as for me was having as many hobbies I could afford. Also, the videography was awesome! Well done. Good questions too. Thanks for putting this out.
Love this video. Have to agree with online shipping being great. I'm in OH and ordered from Corey on Sat and received my package on Monday. Wonderful stuff. I wish there were a few local fish stores near me.
I’m also in OH and I don’t know your exact location but there is gerbers in Dayton and there is a really cool store that also has cool stuff is a little place in Fairborn uh what’s it called hold on lemme look. Aquatics galore. That’s the two places I love shopping for local fish and other stuff. Of course aquarium coop I order from as well you can’t beat their prices but sometimes I need it that same day. Anyway check em out if your around.
"I can't buy fish without the though of trying to breed them." That is exactly my own mentality with my hobby! Dean, I'm so happy to hear another fellow hobbyists say this! For me, it's the satisfaction of watching the babies grow and the exciting challenge of working with genetics that makes it so rewarding. I never know what I'm going to get, even with breeding guppies like I am now. Thank you for the simple advice - especially with the importance of feeding young fry consistent, good quality food. And the importance of water changes. I disagree a little about snails. But that's because I have many uses for them (they are the "canaries" of my tanks first and fish food last). All in all, I always learn something new from you, and take your advice to heart. In a couple more decades, I hope to be a great breeder, too!
What a great conversation! I was nostalgic hearing Dean describe our days pre-internet, pre-express shipping, etc. I loved hearing about some of Dean's other interests over the years - makes me feel better about all the things I tinker with like market gardening, soapmaking, etc. The piles of books everywhere feels like home. Definitely would do his fish school if it happened - always more to know! Breeding fascinates me too because for me, that is the ultimate sign you've created a good space for your animals.
28:43 my jaw dropped. I will be following closely for that.
