  • Britain’s unemployment rate has risen to its highest level for nearly a year as further cracks show in the jobs market, according to official figures.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the rate of UK unemployment rose to 4.3% in the three months to March, which is the highest since May to July last year and up from 4.2% in the previous three months.
The figures also showed regular average earnings growth remaining unchanged at 6% in the three months to March.
Julia says: “Younger people have an attitude to not contribute"

That is the very point of un-controlled migration. Push down the unit cost of labour while the wealthy (which includes people like Starmer) take the benefit.

I hope things pick up for her soon, she will get there. I know what you mean. Nearly all jobs advertised in my area are things like Avon, I look at least once a week. I would like to be exaggerating but I'm not. ( Before anyone jumps on me and says you need to look more than once a week, I do usually, I look at least once a week, and apply, that is on top of working in my part time job).

Yip. I was a long term carer for my mother. After she died I applied for 100s of jobs and didn't get a single interview. Eventually I gave up and retired.

Are you kidding me?? Imagine being 20ish and being paid so little that you couldnt even afford to rent a room.
Houseprices and interst rates make it a combination that BEATS the 15% interest rate boomers had to endure for 2 weeks that they harp on about.
Why bother? I don't blame them!

Exactly it's up to the government to provide a functioning society for people and they have failed to provide affordable housing for years whilst constantly increasing the population by hundreds of thousands each year. There's no wonder people don't care any more.

The problem can easily be explained by the fact one of my shift managers at work is considering whether to stop working and just claim benefits because he's done all the research and can get more that way, sat at home than working.
It's the same in a lot of places like my northern town where it's all low paid, manual jobs that you are lucky if they pay £30k per year.
People are on £30k, £40k, £50k a year and still struggling because of the cost of living.
I personally have always worked, I've only ever missed one day in sickness in over 25 years if full employment, I work an average 42.5 hours a week but I understand why people don't want to the same as me when they can be financially better off not working.
They need to make working pay. The minimum wage and living wage are a joke compared with the cost of living. There are so many working people today that are having to use a food bank. That's bad enough for people on benefits but if you are working and having to go to food banks then it says everything you need to know about the economy of this country.

Younger gens aren’t seeing the benefits of working like getting on the housing ladder. But also they need to understand you work your way up.

You can no longer work your way up as most managers jobs go to outsiders
I'm sure loads of teens would love to start their own animation/film or games company but the start up cost is beyond them

You have to work 5 times harder to achieve the same goals in life as your parents on the same wages today because of cheap foreign labour.

The gov are supposed to be bringing in policies where the unemployed have 12 months to find a job or lose all their benefits ,the problem I have with this is they’ve imported millions of people and they’re all going for the same jobs as the British unemployed meaning job hunting for British unemployed is made much harder because of the same government who are bringing in the stricter policies are also importing more unemployed ,it’s like the gov saying lose benefits if you don’t climb 1000 stairs so you start climbing the stairs then the gov come along and add another 1000 stairs and say keep going or you’ll lose benefits and then the gov say we’re making sure job priorities are for diversity equity and inclusion first and so it goes on and on like the imports and the DEI competition .

I'm 45 I was in full time work in the betting industry for 22 years until I lost my mum October 2020 where I struggled dealing with difficult people and still trying to deal with the loss of my mother since then it's been a struggle for me most of my jobs have been agency and zero hour contracts
I didn't get counselling for the loss of my mothers death until 2023 sept and my mother died 2020 October I found out I was suffering serve depression and extreme anxiety
So I've been struggling with my heath since I have a disabled son I try to help look out for my father who lost his wife and I don't get any support with dealing with any of that so I've been trying to work but it's not easy when you do have health problems and so much going on in you're life
I'm not a person who asks for help as it was always seen as a weakness when I was growing up I guess I have myself to blame for that I just feel so ashamed if I have to ask for help

UK unemployment is actually quite low compared to other major economies, at 4.2% last quarter. We talk as if there is high unemployment, but in EU or even global context, it really isn't. Fair enough to talk about the quality of the work available, but, it is not reasonable to make it sound as if the UK is in trouble with high unemployment in general.

The government as a pot for unemployment and a bigger population means they need to cut benefits that’s the real story

If a job is low paid so what? If they receive benefits and not working they need to fill the damn jobs, or get no money. It's really that simple.

I like Julia, but like most conservatives she ignores the fact that her hero M Thatcher destroyed working class communities, along with their once intrinsic sense of pride and purpose. "Let them pick fruit" eh?
