Hey Jeff, with all the drums content out there it is not easy to be original but you always manage to bring up new cool ideas. Just love your lessons any your playing. Thanks man.
Simply and clearly explained without any BS. Great work! I am a bassist and this makes me want to get to the practice room early and sit on the kit before the actual drummer arrives!
I just love your drumming. I can do all basic variations of these beats pretty ok, but I'm nowhere near incorporating the spice. You do it sooo well. You always put a wide smile om my face with your amazing relentless groovy drumming. 🤗
This video was timed so perfectly. Just had a session where I felt real stuck with the backbeat.. gonna work on this now! Your groove is just butter, man 🙌🏻
Yo Jeff, Again just a brilliant lesson, as i mentioned last week I've been playing for a little while now i'll tell you this is just so fun moving and messing around with backbeats i feel it just gives everybody in the room a little more excitement and enjoyment and also adds fell to the droove as well A great lesson anyways Jeff thanks
Great video! As a disco drummer, I am definitely guilty of putting over 90% of my backbeats on the 2 and 4 ;) This is a fun way of loosening up that creativity! One thing that felt a bit iffy to me, though, is that you very clearly play your hihats with accents on the notes. This definitely adds to the overall feeling of a groove, so it might help newer drummers more if it is also indicated in the notation you give at the bottom of the video.
I'm 65, can't play anymore, but if I could.....You would be a GREAT teacher! Jeff- really enjoyed this video; subbed. I like your style, talent; wishing your channel success.
Nice! Check out Manu Katche’ - he does this kind of thing a lot - sounds great. Another great video Jeff - your playing has groove and precision and is very pleasing on the ears.
Great stuff Jeff…. one of my very favorite drummers, Dennis Davis who played with David Bowie…. pulls off this kind of groove in Bowie’s song “Stay”. Check it out when you have a free minute. See you next Sunday! 👍
That’s an excellent example of this approach! I’m prepping a video demonstrating a few famous songs that use this technique and I’ll definitely add that one to the list.
Nice video. Some great ideas for players to think about. A simple but fairly modern example is Linkin Park’s What I’ve done with the back beat on the 2 and the 3 and. Gives the groove momentum and a very unique cyclic kind of feel.
I always thought it was important to let the music dictate the "beat" and not just change it up for the sake of changing it up. Additionally, some of the simple backbeat on 2 & 4 comes from the days of playing club gigs where keeping a dance floor packed all night was the goal..... nothing keeps a crowd dancing like a strong backbeat on 2 & 4. Being able to musically syncopate a rhythm is a great skill set, but there are times when other factors dictate a different approach!
The most talented drummers can keep the dance floor hopping while playing interesting, rhythms. Great drummers allow the music to dictate “exceptionally stimulating” beats. I hope to improve to that level. Jeff and other excellent UA-cam drummers guide me to become more than just a 2 & 4 back beat player.
@@JeffRandallDrumming its was really great, the groove and the snares sound. Really would like more grooves and lessons with this snare sound. Its changes the whole feeling. Thanx alot😁
Thanks Jessica! Could you suggest a couple Stewart Copeland beats that use this concept for me? I've heard the same thing about his drumming philosophy but can't think of any straight-forward examples...
I hate the sound of my acoustic drums. I have a Roland Vad506 and it just blows out the acoustic... I have ring silencers, I've put tape on the skins and yeah nah.. How do I get to enjoy the acoustic set? I've tuned it according to tuning videos...still doesn't sound right
Next gig 👉🏼 Drummer is playing everything except snare on 2 & 4 Band leader : yo drummer gimme backbeat on 2 & 4 Drummer : …but Jeff Randall said…. Band leader: Oh okay I m sorry , you do what Jeff said…😬

Thanks for the kind words Ron! Means a lot.
Lol these aren't new ideas but it's a good reminder 😁👍
Come on, algorithm, get Jeff the recognition he deserves!
The almighty algorithm is such a tease! Haha.
I just woke up. I checked Facebook, boring!
I checked UA-cam, oh my God Jeff has a killer video! Great start to the day. 😄

Absolutely bud, thanks for watching.
@@JeffRandallDrumming God bless you sir! More videos ❤️
One more cool Lesson from Jeff!! Loved it!!! I always learn so much here!!
So glad you enjoyed it Marcelo!
Definition of backbeat
: a steady pronounced rhythm stressing the second and fourth beats of a four-beat measure
That's right, backbeat just doesn't mean snare drum, it's specifically the beat that emphasized the second and fourth beats in four time
This video was timed so perfectly. Just had a session where I felt real stuck with the backbeat.. gonna work on this now! Your groove is just butter, man 🙌🏻
Right on Jonas, hope you have fun with the concept bud!
@@JeffRandallDrumming Thanks! ✌🏻 by the way, would love an updated video on how you record and mix your drums. Sounds better and better every time 🌴

"Extra Sah oohs" 🤣🤣 hell yeah stir that beat!
Very nice lesson, yes it is so boring to always have the backbeat on 2 and 4 !!
Nice!
Thanks!
Very nice sound as always! how did you get to that amazing Clyde Stubblefield snare sound?
Just cranked the snare and muffled it quite a bit! Mostly using close mics in the mix as well which gives it that funkier vibe.
@@JeffRandallDrumming its was really great, the groove and the snares sound.
Really would like more grooves and lessons with this snare sound.
Its changes the whole feeling.
Thanx alot😁
Woody! 😂 nah awesome vid my bro! 🔥🙌
Love the Drumming.. Fail to see how you mentioned chad smith before stewart Copeland 😉😉😉. Who hated back beats.
Thanks Jessica! Could you suggest a couple Stewart Copeland beats that use this concept for me? I've heard the same thing about his drumming philosophy but can't think of any straight-forward examples...
This video describes nearly every show on Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney, Netflix, HBO, etc…hehe!
Sometimes it's not what you say but how you say it that's important.
Another great example is The Mars Volta - Viscera Eyes
Wowww, LIKE IT BRO
Glad to hear it!
Hi Jeff. Can you this in a slower tempo like pop or love song?
🔥🤟🏾
What snare and heads? Sounds amazing
I might have overdone it recently, when my bandmates couldn't tell where the beat was :D
I'm curious what is off to your lower left. You look there a lot. Just playing with you. Good video.
Haha, it’s my camera assistant.
What's that drum head on the snare? Sounds aaaawsome
Someday i will get a drums)
Roxanne, best ever
🙌🙌🙏
SAUUS!
This is where the drummer for Metallica shines he is the godfather of this style
It makes it fill naughty
What do i need to masters to be able to play like that
I hate the sound of my acoustic drums. I have a Roland Vad506 and it just blows out the acoustic... I have ring silencers, I've put tape on the skins and yeah nah.. How do I get to enjoy the acoustic set? I've tuned it according to tuning videos...still doesn't sound right
Congratulation!! This is gratis video
Thank you Lucho!
@@JeffRandallDrumming excuse me, great video.
This is known as spicing things up, or "how to confuse TF out of your guitar and bass players!" 😛
Next gig 👉🏼
Drummer is playing everything except snare on 2 & 4
Band leader : yo drummer gimme backbeat on 2 & 4
Drummer : …but Jeff Randall said….
Band leader: Oh okay I m sorry , you do what Jeff said…😬
Well if the song calls for displacements then you play it that way, if not then play what’s needed.
