Hey everybody! I just uploaded a killer 30-minute warm-up that's perfect for applying these techniques to. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/E1ceyKwDepw/v-deo.html
I've been a drummer for 20 years and have had to pour through various media... books/teachers/videos to learn alot of what you teach in this 12 minute video 👏
As a drummer for over 150 years and a few years before that, having invented the first ever drum set, and started the school of drumming in drum town, I still learned something watching this.
I am a "beginning beginner " got headache from watching all different videos "how to " and after viewing those videos I got more confused then before viewing those videos. Seeing Jeff's video ALL became completely clear in 12 minutes. Straight forward, and that is the way it has to be teached and shown. Thanks Jeff, this video helped me a lot.
As a teaching drummer of over 30 years, I have to say Jeff that that is some of the best teaching of grip and techniques I’ve ever seen. I love what you left out as well. No talking about where on your index finger the stick should stay, just get it on there. A lot of the grip has to be discovered. I like the golfer Ben Hogan’s quote it’s something like, “the answers you seek are in the dirt.” Your playing sounds amazing and your production is over the top. Congratulations man for making amazing videos and thanks for sharing your knowledge and your enthusiasm.
My father just taught me how to read sheet music and the basics to start with rhythms before he died, and I had my doubts about how to hold the sticks, and with these techniques you helped me a lot. Thank you!
I once heard a wise man say, "Break it down to me like I'm a three year old!" Jeff, thank you for simplifying the art of drumming! You have taught an old dog new tricks! 👍🏽💯
I played many years as self taught I was basically trying to reinvent the wheel throughout. Since I plateaued and started to cycle back to the bare basics this video was the best, most straightforward, didatic and clear that I found. Thank you
So great someone finally stepped up and did this video. I am really happy for every beginner to now have access to a lecture that brings together what I had to condensate by myself over the years watching hours and hours of videos on hand technique. You were able to accomplish that in 12 minutes, which is a big deal! You are really doing an excellent job at preparing and presenting your material. UA-cam education par excellence! 👏
Big thanks! I noticed a void on YouYube in regards to a practical look at all the different techniques and did my best to remedy that. Going forward I want to address each of the techniques in more specific ways but figured it was good to start with a crash course of sorts at first.
@@JeffRandallDrumming Jeff, this was an awesome class! Thank you. I can wait to see the next classes, when you will address each of the techniques in more specific ways!
This is the first video that I’ve seen someone explain the push pull method this way and I been trying to learn it for months and with this video it took literally 5 minutes. THANK YOU
I've actually never heard some of these techniques explained so well. In my own personal experience these techniques require skill and experience, and I gained them and subconsciously applied them naturally after time, more and more efficiently by the year. This is a great launching point.
66 years young.. just revitalized my playing with a new E kit and decided I’ve been playing drums a long time but I want to become a drummer. Search a lot of teaching type videos here and gotta say this is the best one I’ve seen yet. All of them are good but this one does it for me.. I’m subscribed looking forward to more..
I love this lesson! I have watched many lessons, for I am 53 and just beginning, but your finger squeeze on the push pull has never been explained so well. Thank you!
This is a brilliant video. So inspiring to see drummers who have obviously worked so hard to achieve where they are, sharing insight and techniques for many to benefit. I love the drumming community! Cheers Jeff!
Wow! I’m pretty much a beginner with a little experience way back in time. I purchased a Simmons 1200 kit. I’ve had fun experimenting. I’ve watched loads of You Tube videos. I have to say this video has done more than any of them! A simple break down and it WORKS! You bet I hit subscribed. Thank you for such a great video! I always wondered how to play Wipe Out, and now I can see how to. Thx again.
Your video is absolutely amazing. Because you focus on sound and mechanics rather than anything else, you allow players to focus on what matters the most : freedom to produce the sounds we seek. However, what is insanely good here is your ability to condense a lot of crucial information taught through a lot of drummers during decades but in a neutral way. This is instruction at its purest : you don't have an agenda, you just want to help. And what you teach here takes years to truly master and use freely. I can't even believe this video is free... You have my deepest sympathies. I will share this video with every drummer I know because it is simply wonderfully crafted. Thank you, truly 🙏
This is the best explanation I’ve ever seen by anyone. Thank you! I also now know what I need to do to progress and am much further along than I realized! Absolutely fantastic. New subscriber here.
The best part about this lesson that I learned in the first few minutes is that you don't have to commit yourself to one or the other grip lol. You use them both or any portion of the gray area.
This clip is excellent! Explanation parts are concise and easy to understand. The sample videos after each explanation show good detail of drummer’s movement from drum stick, finger, palm, hand, arm until shoulder. I think the lessons from this clip can be used for 1 year practice for beginners ! Thank you so much for making this nice video ! 👍🏻😁
I’ve been playing for 40 years been on here on UA-cam for years never commented about drum videos but I have to say this is the best thing I’ve ever seen on here as far as clarity techniques explanation not to mention you are an incredible drummer well done my friend
In high school band, one summer, I taught my self fast/loud double strokes. I did so by practicing on a soft non-rebounding surface and inducing a rebound with my fingers as you last technique. This video certainly clarifies much for me. I especially liked your use of multiple techniques on different cymbals and drums. And what's funny is your spot-on opening with other instructors showing you a grip than taking off.
As someone who's in the middle of learning these techniques, I couldn't recommend this video enough. It answered a lot of lingering questions I had after watching so many other tutorial videos! One of the best teachers on youtube hands down
This is the best lesson ever! You put it all together so succinctly! Years and years of working on technique and this helps me relax knowing it really is a mix and flow of all the techniques- and that blending them prevents arm fatigue. That’s my biggest take away- now I can use different muscle groups and techniques to not only get a better sound, but to keep my arm from falling off when I’m playing 8 mins of 16th note HH grooves at a fast tempo. Awesome. Thanks Jeff!
I’ve only recently taken up drumming and have a Carlsbro csd600 electronic kit. I’m 61 and drum for pleasure, not to be in a band. I would like to thank you most sincerely for your teaching, which has helped me enormously. Back to basics for me with lots of practicing. Thank you.
Amazing the amount of A+ information that you packed here in 13 minutes. This is the best summary of the most useful hand techniques that I have viewed thus far.
no joke, I've been playing drums for 40 years, learned the Moeller Method back in the day, this video has really answered some questions that I've never really found a clear answer to
As everyone has said this is an amazing video and even an experienced drummer can learn a lot and open up their playing skills with this info. LOVE IT!
Above all your explanation is by far the most simple and easy to understand. You’re genius. Thanks. Subscribed right away. Can’t wait for more useful tips.
I subscribed at 4 minutes into this video. I took lessons for a few years starting when I was 16, played on and off, didn’t play in any meaningful capacity for a good 10 years and purchased an e-drum again this year. I‘m 41 now and this is the first time somebody clearly spelled out why it might be a good idea to play the cymbals with more of a french grip. I have a feeling I‘ll become intimately familiar with your channel in 2022, Jeff! 👍
I just got my first drumsticks and practice pad yesterday to begin learning drums, and this video was really good for tips on how to start and a preview of what comes next. Thanks for a great video!
Use this vid daily for warm since Ive got my kit set back up, been a few years. So taking a different approach to drumming and actually learning techniques, fundamentals, which has been awesome, because Death Metal and Punk Rock was all I played and never took the time to learn drums, always jammed with my homies.
Unreal video Jeff. I've never seen all the techniques and clips summarised like this. Great seeing you actually use them on the kit in real scenarios rather than just the pad. Great stuff, thanks a lot keep it up!
This is the first video I have watched on your channel and this is wonderful, I think what has really affected my drumming is the way I hold the stick, thank you so much for this
From a teacher to a teacher: well done, really. Those who, in various manners, criticize and/or ridiculize this video either do not have any clue about its content or are guys who simply have no ambition to take a commitment on becoming a better drummer. Technique and feeling are not enemies, if you say that you're totally missing the point and/or have no ambitions. Nice job, Jeff. 👍🏼
Thank you so much for this perfect video of instruction. I set the playback speed to 0.25 and it really helped greatly. Your form is perfect and your teaching style has my full attention.
Hey Jeff, great video. You are a fine drummer and a fine teacher. I’ll be studying this one closely. I started drumming in 197?, stopped when I went to college, and only got interested again with my own kids in the late 2000s. As someone raised on rock drummers who certainly didn’t have the overwhelming volume of instruction available to us today, I never worried too much about technique. I just banged on drums because it felt good and I could sort of sound like my heroes. But this video hits the ABCs for me: Accuracy, Brevity, Clarity. About something worth learning about doing correctly, now that I’m 59 and technique issues can lead to actual injuries (which wasn’t a problem when I was 15 or 16). Thanks!
Sawwwce....I like it! In 30+ years of playing, this is literally the simplest explanation of the Moeller method I've heard/watched. If that doesn't happen then I feel as though I am not getting it and will move on to something else. Love the content of your videos and how simple you explain things. Absolutely key for a new player. Well done sir!!
I'm a total beginner and the push/pull stroke looked really hard. Yet here I am 5 minutes after Jeff's explanation, playing it just fine and grinning like an idiot. Squeeze the sticks at the right time and voila! It's like magic. Cheers, Jeff!
