Hope you all have a KILLER time work on these beats! Btw, I'm available for online lessons and would love to work with you. For details: JeffRandallDrumming.com
I know no one will read this, but; i remember my sophmore yr in hs i was at a house party, it was a quad kegger and some college kids brought their guitars and a drum kit and tried playing some live music. No one was feeling it for their tallent wasnt quite there. One of my close friends encouraged me to hop on the drums and give a demonstration. I had a few beers and got on. I laid a mild funk beat down hotting some.ghosy notes amd tripplets with the base, while i was playing i felt a tap on my shoulder with a random guy holding the mic giving me the "keep it going" hamd signal. Skinny white guy. He started rapping and it progressed into a hip hop/funk progrssive song. Everyone gathered around and the party went NUTS. Man, i was only 16 and shouldnt had been partying, but if i hadnt, i wouldnt have those memories. We created a vibe that was pure and ill never forget it. These beats are important to lesrn if youre lesrning drums. Funk/jazz beats are KING. Edit: i was also a self taught drummer. I started in 2nd grade and taught myself by listening to the music. I didnt know how to read music, and youtube wasnt quite a thing yet.
@@eamonnbeahan5611 Seriously, Disco is back. Hating on it so so late 20th century. I mean, it took a while for it to come back to be fair, but we need something to do while Rock is waiting to come back to life.
Excellent playing and style! These patterns are inspiring me in my drum programming.. By the way, I'm proud to say I DON'T HATE DISCO! 😊. I started my musical journey as a drummer, but I have been a guitar player for 50 of my 63 years of life. Thanks, very much
If you’re a drummer and have a hard living situation right now don’t ever give up this passion. We are a dying breed. We are the salt of the earth, we are the backbone, and will forever be. Hope everyone finds joy within this instrument just like I did 18 years ago. I’ll never stop. What we learn is never ending. Great video bud, you’re a funny dude with the sauce that’s boss. Hope you have a good one as well.
You are my number one source for big band writing! Your grooves are being played in schools in Pennsylvania and West Virginia including West Virginia University right now!
I love it Jeff! Fantastic that you’ve been exploring a lot of funk lately. And you’re so good at it. The cool thing for beginners/intermediates, is funk sounds amazing, and it’s not ridiculously hard to play. I encourage all beginners/intermediate players to attempt Jeff’s funk lessons. You’ll be jamming away in no time, and having a blast on the drum set! 🥁
Thanks Jeff - your playing is so precise it's a joy to listen to. Those Zildjian K light hats sound amazing and that popping snare is perfect. My band plays a lot of soul and funk so I'll be using these beats for sure. Can't wait to stank it up!
Hell yeah! Just started forming a band and my guitar players can play some soulful riffs, I want to bring some funk into the equation hehe that’s my favorite genre
You nailed the funk out of this subject. I am a funk drummer at heart. I agree that the 16th note is one of the hardest to keep smooth and in the pocket. "When I'm kissin' My Love by Bill Withers and Cold Blood both do a nice job with the 16th. By the way, I've opened for Cold Blood a couple times.
Jeff you are a natural teacher, entertainer, and really good drummer. I am enjoying your channel. I took up drums at age 60 (7 years ago) and just wish I had started when I was a kid. These make Great semi retirement brain activity exercises.
When i heard that intro beat i instantly got that stank face, that was on my face for entire video. The only difference is speed in which my head was bobbing. Great stuff
Nice beats, definitely inspired the Stank Face! I love a good funky groove, having grown up with Parliament Funkadelic, Earth Wind and Fire, Larry Grahm and Grahm Central Station, and a host of other funk greats. A couple of these were less familiar to me, but most of them I play already and I agree they are great beats. :-) Thank you for sharing.
I play drums too! I love funk and hip hop beats mixed with rock and clumpy Tom fills. This is great for all of us. Going from loud rock to more acoustic music that still moves is what I’ve been about this year. Keep it up.
Giving yourself stack face is the best stank face you can get. I'm so hard on myself as well as many other drummers to themselves. So if you get your own stank face on, genuine, you know your doing good. ❤
Very cool video ! Just one thing about your version of the go-go beat: the essence of gogo music is the 3-2 clave. You have to have that clave (as bd, bd, bd - bd, snare) for it to be gogo music.
Lol, that very first beat I played back n the day I picked up on from Clyde Stubblefield ( James Brown's drummer). I'm feeling u on these funk beats bro., right up my alley.
Wonderful playing and so damn funky you really put the time in to nail those beats. What I would love to see is the fills/phrasing and stickings you use to go with this types of grooves perhaps you could do a series on that? A bit like you did in the beginning of the video when you were playing that swung groove and then adding those little swing fills in that keep the momentum of the groove going!
Really love the beats Jeff, all of them! Not sure it's because I haven't been playing that much lately or some are these are quite difficult but I must admit I'm struggling with my independance. Gonna work on these till there perfect. Thanks man!
These beats are no joke Louis! Some of them seem simple on paper but the feel and independence are much trickier in practice. Take your time with ‘em! Have fun.
Starting to learn drum. All of those hihat patterns, i noticed it in a Jeff's Porcaro's playing too. I guess every person with the name Jeff has the pocket. ☺️
stank face is to music, as laughing is to comedy; that is to say, it is a leftover instinctual reaction to stimuli from centuries ago, similarly laughing is the "we are safe" noise humans used to make after we we startled or threatened.
Hope you all have a KILLER time work on these beats! Btw, I'm available for online lessons and would love to work with you. For details: JeffRandallDrumming.com
I dont wanna commit sacrilege but if you do remote session work .. do you also have an E-kit ?
Those were really killer grooves man! Loved it. Thank you for this video!
As a musician “stank face” is the highest compliment you can receive from another musician

Cool story bro!!
Solid enough of a video that I’m not even gonna cry over the jab at disco.
Honestly what was that lol? I thought disco haters were confined to the dustbin of history.
we wouldn't have The Killers, or a lot of other bands without a solid disco beat. beats is beats just as parts is parts.
ok whatever dad

Disco... not a huge fan. But it has its place. I will say I like Donna Summers
I love playing on 13 inch snares. Crispy baby, crispy.
As someone who has a permanent stank face, I need to learn these chops so I’d have an excuse.
It's Iike PMS every day!
lmao
808's, kicks, hi hats, percs, and some shifting snare. Hiphop and rap beats of today
when i looked at the sub coat i thought that there were like 200k. You deserve way more for how much time you spend on these!
Loving the comedy infusion lately dude, makes learning from you even better than usual!

I wish there were more drummers and musicians in general like you out there, we need to bring back the funk!
Playing funk gives me what I affectionately call: "chicken neck"

Very nice! Thanks for breaking down the funk.
i highly recommend Sir Jeff Randalls approach on teaching drum lessons because its simple, straightforward and easy to understand.
I love it Jeff!

brilliant lesson. Thank you !

Awesome video. I love the concept of stank face. We've all experienced it!
FUNKY AT ITS BEST !!!!!!! THANK YOU SSSSOOO MUCH JEFF RANDALL......

Awesome library of funky grooves. Thanks!!
Pocket beat is sounding great!!
You’re a BEAST! It’s always impressive and inspiring to see someone SO completely dialed in - technique, timing, feel - just awesome.
Syncopated beat sounds like amen break using hats. Great beats, appreciate the video!
As always: Awesome playing, awesome video, awesome sound, awesome quality! Great Beats! Thank you again, Jeff!
Much appreciated!
I love how your snare strokes are so consistent in volume and sound. Things like these seperate the boys from the men.
Nicely played sir! That 13 sakae snare rips!
Yes ...also known as mean mugging...denotes a primal , positive affirmation of fkn awesomeness!!
Incredible bass drum sound.
Love this video haha I sometimes get that face, funk is one of my favorite styles to play to
This is soooo good! I have material for 3 weeks to practice.
Great lesson! I find it really amazing to see how much modern (pop-)punk drumming is influenced by funk drumming. Did not realize this until now :)
❤love this dude's videos as a person who wants to learn the drums he's content is really beginner friendly
I love the gogo bit❤❤
Lot to chew on in this video, thanks Jeff!
The Swung Pocket Beat sounds like something I hear on a lot of Rhcp songs! I like it!
Damn! That was cool, man! What a series of seriouis grooves! Gotta explore them all! Thank you for this video!
Thanks!
You're very welcome!

Actually it's called the "thizz" face and it was popularized by Mac Dre...
I play drums too! I love funk and hip hop beats mixed with rock and clumpy Tom fills. This is great for all of us. Going from loud rock to more acoustic music that still moves is what I’ve been about this year. Keep it up.
I came here for some Johnny Jenkins' I Walk On Guilded Splinters (as used on Loser by Beck), and I was not disappointed! @4:18

You the Man Dude!! Thank you Jeff!!
I literally have never thought about the “Stank Face” but I do that every time in in the pocket
Man I love you drumming channel, you always motivate me to practice, i learnt some pretty cool fills and grooves from your channel👊

Just found you, Jeff, your channel is FIRE 💯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🧨🎆
Lol, that very first beat I played back n the day I picked up on from Clyde Stubblefield ( James Brown's drummer). I'm feeling u on these funk beats bro., right up my alley.
Stank Face - awesome!!!
As a beginner I love listening to drum grooves, please cook something up for us to listen to only 🙏🙏😖😖
Loving the funk! Great lessons as always, and superb playing!
2:12 I think I heard this somewhere before, . Idk

Love that idea Bhavesh! Like a funky fills lesson or something like it. Will do!
Ive had stank pants before. Its exactly what you think and its not related to music at all, but it can be, and thats a crowning achievement
Great, Jeff!
Thanks Alfonso!
So much for "not permanent". My face is now cramped up. Thanks a lot Jeff.
Haha, so sorry!
You can't hate disco unless you hate life. Funk is awesome, but disco is pure fun. The world was a better place with disco.
Sick concentration on that dookay
(0:14 -2:09 -2:55-6:37 all slight variations)
First couple minutes: "Yeah, okay buddy. Show me something." 2:54: "Oh, ok, he practices.."
Play them funky beats White Boy!! Stank Face activated!!! LOL Nice work and explanations!

Awesome lesson. Would you happen to have notations for these by chance?
