- Even presidents aren't allowed upstairs at Graceland. In fact, in all the decades since Elvis's death, only one person got an exception to the rule.

What do you think of Graceland?
Graceland is cool and interesting, but I think it’s haunted by the ghost of Elvis.
I was there in October. The mansion needs work, the floors creek and that is a safety hazard. That is why no one is allowed upstairs.🙄

😮
I will go upstairs i really don't care
@@Chadhall1988
I don't know why they have the upstairs blocked off from the public, no one is up there or lives up there
Private or not.
His aunt or someone related to him had a lifetime residency up there but I think she
Passed away yrs ago.
My husband and I visited and toured the estate in 1983. It was a thrill of a lifetime. It was explained to our group that the reason the upstairs was off limits is that Elvis had an Aunt whom still lived on the upstairs floor. (Maybe, maybe not). But the main reason was that millions of visitors would weaken the structure of the staircase and upper floor. Anyway, that's what I remember the guide saying.
Maybe elvis is living up there?
the real answer would have more to do with fire code than anything they claim besides that - one staircase means they would not be allowed to have tours upstairs unless they added another
Maybe they left it untouched after Elvis died like dirty underwear and socks layin around etc.
I've had tours of early 1800s plantation homes that showed 2nd floors.
@@oatlord I guarantee it wasn't nearly as popular as Graceland, and tour groups were likely very limited in size. I wasn't kidding; for decades they didn't do tours of the upstairs floors of Glensheen mansion - and only started doing so when they had upgraded a few minor details related to escape routes. This is the main reason why certain tours of famous places avoid certain floors - wasn't saying that randomly. :P
The perfectly rational reasons I've heard:
1) Upstairs is used as a de facto storage for other exhibits, occasionally some of those are brought downstairs for the public to see
2) They're worried about thefts and grisly souvenir hunting
3) The late Lisa Marie had a lot of good times in that house and recognised it as Elvis's private happy place. One of the upstairs rooms is her childhood bedroom. Elvis himself apparently wasn't all that sociable or outgoing, was somewhat of a homebody
4) The bathroom would indeed become a ghoulish shrine and who knows how people would behave or what they would do
5) The house isn't that well built, with real concern that the upstairs just couldn't manage all that footfall over time
The completely crazy reason I've heard:
1) Elvis is still alive and still secretly living there. LOL
#6. That's were he practiced witchcraft
7: the one and only actual answer - fire code. There's only one set of stairs, so no emergency exit if that is blocked by fire.
#8: There really is no upstairs, its just a myth!
#9: That's where the Cattywampus lives and you don't want no part of that! Not no way, not no how!
#10) Yoko Ono has been living up there for many years - she secretly purchased the mansion when she had enough of living in New York City.
I would love to visit Graceland. I can’t believe Lisa Marie passed. The only good thing about it is that now she is with her daddy and son. Rest In Peace beautiful. We will always love you.
I'm not so sure she's with them.

@@Von199X Comprehension isn’t your strong point 😅 She said she visited in the 80’s. She said her daughter was 4 months old WHEN ELVIS DIED, which was in 1977. Her daughter was not 4 months old in the 1980’s now was she 😅😅😅
Visiting Graceland in person was much different than a cheezy, touristy-only type spot I had envisioned. All the displays, narration by guides, grounds, and access was completely well-done and quite informative and very interesting.
Yes, seeing this video surprised me.

I have a wide range of musical taste from Classical Music to Motown to all the great Megasuperstar Legends of the 80s/90s to Guns n Roses/Bon Jovi/Aerosmith up to Beyoncé and Alicia Keys. There it stops. No Trash Millenial Music. But also no Elvis at the beginning of this short contemporary pop music. Then rather even Reggae and Boybands.

Apparently Austin Butler was taken upstairs as well after Lisa Marie saw the movie. Just heard him say that the other day in an interview.

@@judiette I think because all they did was think about him, I honestly think they need to re-do that house and let the next generation live in it. I think its too much sadness they are sitting in. If you took the house and lived in it as a beautiful extension of what he left the family and upgraded it and lived in it like a normal home, with maybe a few small things left.. it would be happy memories instead of this odd shrine that is full of sadness.
Graceland is amazing. I’ve been there twice and definitely want to go again. The garden in the back where Elvis and family are buried is so beautiful and peaceful.
The one thing at that ticks me off is that after Elvis died, and pre to turning Graceland into a museum, Priscilla went in and changed some of the room decor. So all is not the original like Elvis had it when he died. After Priscilla and Elvis divorced, he got together with Linda Thompson for about 4 yrs, until 1976. Elvis and Linda did some redecorating of their own. Elvis liked what he liked, so it was done to his taste. Elvis was very particular. Then after Elvis passed, Priscilla, wanted a room or two to look more brighter, and made changes.
Priscilla sucks and is the most greediest person ever. Disgusting.
Yeah I think it was mostly red with Linda and now it’s blue
Priscilla did not "change" the rooms, she returned some of them to how they were when she lived there. It was Elvis's decor and color choices throughout the 1960s, and it's how it mostly was for many years. The decor trends of the 70s were gaudier and Elvis liked red so in 1974 Linda did some redecorating, incorporating a lot of red throughout the house. I think it is good that Graceland represents Elvis's personality in all the time periods, including some of the changes made while he lived there. It also represents Elvis when he was emotionally at the height of his fame and also in the darker years.
They say Linda Thompson’s decorating caused it to look like a bordello! 😂 Lots of gaudy red and velvet! 😂
@@ms.robbie7536 That is true. But that was the style Elvis liked, and wanted, at that time. Nothing was done if it was not to Elvis' liking. He was very particular. He did not even use cutlery, or drink out of a glass, that was not only ever used by him. He had a bit of OCD. So even with decorating his home, he was specific.
The backyard with Elvis’ grave and his grandson’s (recent) grave tore me up, Man. Unexpectedly. Heavy.
I felt the same way. In fact, when I see pictures of his grandson, I personally see a clear resemblance of his grandfather. It breaks my heart how he died. I have the best memories growing up, and watching his grandfather’s films on the weekends. Prayers, and protective blessings for those whom are a part of his incredible legacy.
I'm not convinced that's where they are all buried at.
Those could be just grave panels that tell you who died.

Forgot how much I enjoyed Elvis. Had lost many friends the year before he died. We had enjoyed his music. They were german divers and those girls loved Elvis. They may have been to Graceland that summer of 1975. He died the next year.
When we went to Graceland in the 1980s a tour guide told us no one was allowed upstairs but she would pass Graceland after work and see the upstairs all lit up and a lot of cars in the circular driveway. She said she felt Elvis was still alive and living in the upstairs.
ya never know
I’m sure the house keepers and care takers will have to go there and dust and fresh up things . Even if nobody stays up there they would have to keep it fresh if they didn’t there would be heavy dust cobwebs and a musty smell so people has to go up there from time to time.
He is still alive.
Its possible but nobody in their right mind faking their death would have faked it by " dying" on a toilet. Especially an icon. A plane crash, car accident, even a disappearance, but on a toilet with your pjs down. No, just no.

I've been to Graceland ... did not seem like 17.000 square feet. Big yes. But not that big. Such a sad and tragic family story.
I saw Graceland in early 2000s and one thing that struck me was that the original house is not larger than a lot of McMansions today, even in suburban western PA. Some of the square footage is other buildings on the property (his racquetball building is quite large, but even it had a dinky kitchen) and additions to make the place a museum.
Billy Idol was also brought upstairs by Lisa Marie. When she was on tour with Billy, the bands members went back to Graceland and Lisa showed Billy Elvis' bedroom. None of the other members were allowed up, just Billy.
I was allowed there.
Lisa Marie also took Nicholas Cage up there.

What did women like most, the obesity, drug addiction or constant constipation? What a catch
I’ve actually been upstairs at Graceland and it’s one heck of a story. I’m an electrician and I was working in Memphis in 2002 when I got a call to do some work at Graceland. I arrived and this woman took me upstairs and showed me what needed to be done and then she left. I was working alone for about ten minutes when the grumblings began. I knew that I had to take a serious dump and quick. I was in what I believe used to be Elvis’ office. I ran across the hall into his bedroom and then straight into his bathroom. I dropped my britches and sat down with mere seconds to spare. It was a surreal moment as I sat there on the King of Rock and Roll’s throne blowing mud. I finished, sprayed some cologne I found on the countertop to mask the foul odor and went back to work. Nobody from Graceland ever knew about it I guess because I never heard any complaints. I really didn’t have any other good options and I did what I had to do.
I went to Graceland in the summer of 2022. It was a cool experience.
Graceland is located in a very sketchy neighborhood now. The wall surrounding the property is covered with graffiti and there are signs up all around the property that your personal property is not safe in your car. We were going to do the tour, but we’re actually afraid to leave our car.
What do the signs say
Be safe. You couldn’t pay me to go there.
The graffiti on the wall started with girls leaving their phone numbers written in lipstick and turned into fans signing the wall, which ramped up particularly after his death. It’s part of the history of the place. They mention it on the tour. The museum complex across the street is incredibly nice as well. I really enjoyed the tour.
Welcome to Mempho, Daddy!
Get a gun, don’t be scared you puss
I've heard someone say another reason why they probably don't allow people upstairs is because of the traffic. They would have to reconstruct the staircase in order to accommodate that many people walking up and down the stairs each day. It makes logical sense to me. I mean they could close the bathroom door and keep it off limits. But I wonder if they had to do that to the stairs for the basement? 🤔😉🤷♀️🙂 They go up and down those stairs all day long.
May it last for eternity ! Graceland ! GV ! 🎶🎸🎶 😊

Unfortunately it was necessary to keep it in the family. Elvis spent uncontrollably. Was generous to a fault. And was financially abused by Colonel Parker. Rights to his early recordings had been sold off. He was on the verge of losing Graceland except for his prolific touring. They were worried they would have to sell since his royalties couldn't maintain the property. Opening it up to the public seemed like the best option. How is it any different? I seen a bunch of comments from people who visited decades ago, it’s always been a tourist destination since it was open to the public. It’s literally looked the same since Elvis was alive…
He's in a better place.
It is understandable why the decision was made to make the upstairs portion of the house off limits to visitors. However, that decision is depriving people from visiting the most historically significant part of the house. Indeed, Elvis died in the upstairs bathroom however his remains are not buried there. It's not liked the bathroom became his tomb and therefore it must be treated like a grave site. Why make the house into a museum if they weren't going to open it up all the way?
The upstairs portion of the house is likely frozen as it was August 16, 1977. To go up there would be like going back in time. It is a shame that part of the house is not included in the tour.
Because then the focus is on the way he DIED, rather than the way he LIVED: that only proves this video right. he accomplished so much in the 20 years (1957-1977) that he lived there, so why do people NEED to see what's left of his final moments?
We all know he died in the bathroom on the toilet: anything beyond that is intrusive, obsessive and ghoulish. He gave the world enough in his 42 years, with the last 5 leading to his early demise. Let the man rest.
Makes sense I suppose….that half a million visitors to Graceland would no doubt treble annually if people were allowed to snoop around his bedroom and private space where he passed away, the right and respectful decision!
I went when I was a toddler who didn’t understand what death was. My mom took me to his grave and told me “Elvis is sleeping in there”. My reaction was “ELVIS WAKE UP I CAME ALL THE WAY FROM LOUISIANA TO SEE YOU AND YOURE SLEEPING?!” To which my mom had to explain to me what death was on the front steps of Graceland. Fun story about a child disturbing a poor legend’s peace.
The true reason. . . Without making serious alterations the upstairs doesn’t have the right fire escape access and they don’t want to alter the house.
That window over the front door is the bathroom where he died
I loved visiting Graceland in the 90's. It is not worth what they charge nowadays tho. Toured his house, airplane, and museum.
Weird that I stumbled upon this video just a week after Lisa Marie died? Totally random coincidence. I just liked the thumbnail and it was an interesting video.
If only his family and close friends were allowed upstairs in his lifetime, then it should remain that way forever: his fans should understand this, and let it be. For someone of his stature in the 60's and 70's, that was his private escape from the pressure of fame, and it should be respected without question.
The audacity of visitors feeling they "deserve" access to the upstairs rooms is disgusting to me. Because then the focus is on the way he DIED, rather than the way he LIVED: that only proves this video right. He accomplished so much in the 20 years (1957-1977) that he lived there, so why do people NEED to see what's left of his final moments?
We all know he died in the bathroom: anything beyond that is intrusive, obsessive and ghoulish. The King of bacon, banana and peanut butter sandwiches, didn't die of a heart condition. He succumbed, on the toilet, to chronic constipation. He gave the world enough in his 42 years, with the last 5 leading to his early demise. Let the man rest: you'll live just fine without seeing the upstairs.
Because Elvis is up there.😊

@@arturoacosta6583 I thought about going around there to show my respects but a friend told me it was unreal about the people there
really why should I care where you live
Is Graceland in a sketchy part of town like I have heard?
Residents care shit about Graceland. Many posts say they never went to that tourist clown trap. Caring for Elvis is a big bug in your system anyhow!
Been there! Can you say SHAG carpet?! It’s cool!!
Elvis only had $5 Million left when he died. He was very generous with his money, and is said to have bought close to 300 cars (mostly Cadillacs) for his friends. He also gave Cadillacs to his favorite pharmacists to ensure a steady supply of his drugs. He did a lot of drugs, but they were all Rx, so he didn't consider it to be a problem. He never did street drugs.
After Lisa's unexpected passing, I believe they should let people tour the upstairs now. It would only be fair since the cost to go there is so high. It's literally 76$ just for the standard tickets. If I'm gonna pay that much, I want to see the entire house. I lived in Memphis my entire life and never got to see it because the price was so high for limited things to see. If Elvis was alive, he would not be charging that much. He probably wouldn't charge at all.
We'll probably have to wait until Priscilla passes before they let us up there. Of course, it will depend on whoever takes over the estate and if they care more about money than upholding the family's request to keep the upstairs private.
Lisa Marie was buried there on Jan 22, 3 days after this video posted.
Correction..Graceland is second most visited after both the White House and the Biltmore Estate
How are you doing
What about McDonald’s?🍟🍔
@@richardkronberg4925 ...what about MCDonalds???
Then it’s the third most visited. You couldn’t pay me to go there.
@@sogorgeous2257 ...I'm sure they are broken up by you not gracing them with your presence.
I understand why they won’t let people upstairs. But part of me wish they would
Wow those are not wholesome thoughts about breaking rules to go upstairs. Why did you decided to share those thoughts with the world?
When I was 15 me and a friend broke into Graceland and went upstairs.. I still have the photos
I was told his aunt lived up there till her death.
Yes
When I went to Graceland last year, I was told that when Pricsilla is in town she stays upstairs.
What a tragic family.
Who has been to Graceland? Is the place big inside? One cannot tell just from seeing video, and photos. You can see a bit of the upstairs in the movie documentary, This Is Elvis (1981)- The first few minutes of the movie doc are pretty cool.
The original house is not much larger than large suburban houses today.
I’ve been to Graceland I went there in 2018
visited graceland a long time ago with my parent , then they told us that upstairs was off limits because the place was to old and coulnt support all the weight from the visitors.
We were there last week
Nobody is allowed in my upstairs either, until I clean it up
Lisa and Elvis himself sad this is my.private place Lisa keeped that like that.. and did go up with her mom or with Jerry Jerry sad Elvis his books are there.. and nothing is change the day he died.. its a time capsel.. very cool do.
Privacy is one reason why upstairs is off limits, for the family!
Another is to keep the mystic alive,
Keep them wondering, while the money rolls in.
Jack Soden ain't no fool!
Cafe was NOT the only one who has been upstairs
Very interesting this is but I don’t think I would even want to go upstair’s.
Even if we were allowed.
To painful this would be.

Creepy. The energy would be too much for me. I don’t belong there.
@@michelinelalonde2217 What energy are you talking about?
@@santiagobeneth8543
I’m not saying I communicate with spirits, LOL. I an just sensitive to energy, in general. Being at a concert can feel overwhelming to me. It’s so much positive energy, it makes me weep. Visiting Aztecs ruins, where there may have been ceremonies and a rock we makes me feel like I am infringing on a holy place.
@@michelinelalonde2217 Interesting. That sensitivity may be useful to you when buying a house, you already feel if it's haunted haha
Thanks, ~~~~~Sherry
How are you doing
Some places need to stay private.
Remember kids if you don't want to die like these people don't do Drugs.👍
I heard a rumor. That they are making a movie of Lisa Marie's life. Kristian Stewart plays Lisa Marie. Has anyone heard about this?
No, And I won’t watch a minute of it.
LMAO?! For what? A bored out heiress doing drugs. Blowing a 100 million USD. Marrying 2 steerage loser popping out 4 overpopulation Trash Millenials. Real waste of film! Some ppl live in a Media-Matrix it's dangerously unfunny!
