Good stuff. Currently a student pilot based at KSLC and you're spot on with stating how GA friendly the place is. Getting used to all the radio calls was definitely daunting at first but it definitely gets easier with each lesson.
I flew to Utah 3 times last year in my 1965 Piper 180 from Sugar land Tx. But opted to land at KSPK . Spanish Fort really really friendly. Saved a bunch of money in tie down and Fuel cost.
Terrific video. Very instructional for someone with 170 hours who flies in the West, like me. I got my private in Provo and my instructor had us do one landing in SLC. We did it in a 152 at about midnight, to avoid major traffic. What a thrill! I almost felt we could have easily landed the 152 sideways on the runway, the scale of everything is so much larger!
@@airbus214airplane Although I did meet with Dr. Smart at the time (1992), it just seemed like such a huge investment! And UVU was taking delivery of their Diamond aircraft at the time.. Nope, just did a PPL on my own from a local FBO
Getting in and out of SLC isn't bad at all even at peak hours once you learn the procedures. Quite a few GA folks are actually based there, so they're used to us. Mainly they're trying to make sure you're clear of the instrument approaches for 34L/34R. If you aren't sure about anything, the controllers are great; keep calm, ask for help, and they'll walk you through it. Coming up from Provo if the winds favor 35 they'll have you follow I-15 typically around 6000, left near I-80 and then right base for 35. If it's busy expect a hold making left turns just east of the field following I-15 north and Redwood Rd south, they'll step you down in 500 foot increments for sequencing. For 17 it's similar, but the racetrack might be in the opposite direction. For departures southbound they'll give you an altitude and have you fly west to I-15 and follow it. Westbound, you're looking at either the I-80 transition (crossing underneath the jet approaches) or the "barn" transition over top of the two passenger runways and northwest toward a red-roofed barn on Antelope Island. Both are on the terminal area chart.
As a student pilot, it was a fun challenge to copy down the Bravo ATC instructions and repeat back to them right along with you. I flew in a Cherokee 140 long ago with a college buddy, taking the controls for about 10 minutes. It flew effortlessly. I've only trained in a 2003 C172 SP which is excellent but Miles's Cherokee 180 seems like an excellent choice.
Josh, I've followed your channel for some time now and besides your professional radio skills, you have become a great editor/director/producer/commentary reporter and host... another thumbs up....
Great video. Keep em comin. I’m based just north of SLC at Ogden. The whole front is always GA friendly especially Hill AFB, we are lucky. Glad you came through. High West is great stuff. Cheers.
I’m a student pilot at KSPK. I love the informative video on Bravo airspace and I’m glad the hospitality was good in SLC :). Keep the great content coming!
Given I live in the SLC area I loved the flight into SLC Int'l. Should have called, there's a ton to see in the area, but glad you made it up to Park City.
Josh, you are doing such a great job with your videos. Someone recently suggested that it would be great for you to do a show on TV to show the masses (even more than here on youtube) the wonder, joy, utility, etc. of general aviation. Such a good idea :-)
I just don't get it what is it not to like about this video??? why and how anybody give thumb down? Rest assured you are doing an amazing job. Keep'm rolling.
Love the controllers at KSLC, they have always been great the few times I have flown into there. From the video clip, it looks like you visited the High West saloon in Park City. If you are ever back this way, visit the actual distillery near Wanship, especially for the tour and Sunday brunch. Great videos!
I was delivering a new PA-18 Super Cub to the Piper dealer on the main airport in marginal VFR conditions, low scattered clouds and when I called approach at 25 out, it turned out that there was no modulation on the transmitter. I could hear them but all they could hear was key clicks but no voice. Rather than working me in, they sent me to High West. I landed there, tied it down and called the dealer who said he'd pick it up from there. I heard later that the pilot who went after it managed to ground loop and put it on its back in the middle of 34R.
Great video! I love this episode though they're always amazing. @10:34 off the edge of your wing, is my house. Love flying through Bravo along the Wasatch Front, I did all of my training here! Looking forward to your flight to Boise, I've done that for x-country time.
Nice flying. Nice plane. Nice video. I've flown in the vicinity of Bravo airspace (KADS, KBFI, KRNT, KSQL) but have never been cleared in to it. Boise was my base for the eclipse in 2017 - hotel in Boise, observed from Weiser. I ended up driving since I only got my plane back from her annual two days before.
Josh, enjoy your videos. Always a good amount of flying commentary and tips topped off with some beautiful scenery! I've watched your channel for a bit now and always look forward to your next release. Keep 'em coming! Fly Safe! 8)
I landed on the long runway (12,700) at Lincoln Ne back in August. The FBO was at the other end of the runway and the tower controller cleared me to land long. I landed about 9,000' down the runway. It was strange letting that much runway pass under me. I was glad to be there after leaving the FL Panhandle that morning in our club's 182.
7:18 totally recognised seeing this view before, and then it "Gott" to me(^^): it was on Tucker Gott's channel, him flying through there on his paramotor, I believe it was in that cross country race. Awesome memories
Hello Aviation 101 from a viewer in Moab Utah. Next time you will have to make some time to really see the area, it is beautiful country out here. Great video, all the best from a rusty ol pilot in Moab. ;-)
That’s a very familiar valley. Even though I have landed at almost every airport within 30 miles of salt lake I haven’t actually put SLC in my logbook. I do have to wonder if it meant anything at all to you when they used Redwood Road as a landmark.
Jesse Splan I just added you on Facebook. The 182 is down for maintenance, but we can also take one of the south valley flying club cherokees for now. 😀
Student pilot out of U42. ive had the chance to fly into SLC. pretty fun to go play with those guys but it is daunting. side note, check ride in 5 days haha
Nice video boy them bravo airspaces make for some busy cockpits lol hard to keep up with all the stuff going on. I went yhru slc this past june on my way to great falls mt. I15 is a very busy highway to say yhe least lol. Yall be safe and have fun
Further north 95 miles in Cache Valley [pronounced CASH] is a great flying experience on a beautiful day. You guys need to try it once when in the area.
It’s fabulous seeing all the beautiful scenery in the remote places but super cool when you fly into the bravo spaces 👍 what you ever think about becoming a commercial airline pilot ?
That fire is normal for this region, though we do appreciate your report. The fire department will send a bird out to look at it, but they're most likely going to leave it alone and post signs on the freeway for drivers not to report it. It's awesome to see you reporting it to flight services though. I landed on that same runway just a few weeks ago. I was flying over Provo when you passed through and heard you on approach. Wanted to say hi but I was busy.
Amazing scenery captured in this video! The quality of the videography is unparalleled! Really enjoy watching these flights that focus on the technical aspects of the flying as a private pilot in addition to the scenery! Keep up the great work! How is the engine overhaul proceeding???
not only amazing footage, but also amazing flying skills! I'll follow you ;-) being very green on the flying stuff with engines... keep up the good work!
Advice for learning communication skills.. Go out and buy a small handheld aviation radio. Search for tower and approach control facilities. Listen and visualize where the aircraft is and direction heading. It helps so much to understand the process along with proper radio phraseology.
In Canada, as soon as you see a forest fire it's an automatic Class F restricted airspace 5 miles to 3000 regardless if it is on NOTAM or not. Interesting how the US uses TFR instead. Do you guys have class F airspace? Professional communications will always help you along.
This is something that’s impossible in Germany (more or less). The big airports like Frankfurt and Munich are PPR for aircraft below 2t and if you even try to apply it will be declined outright. Some airports like Hamburg and Berlin-Schönefeld are possible to land at but ridiculous expensive so it’s rarely ever worth it.
i'm catching up on my subscriptions her on youtube so that's why i only comment now. wouldn't it be easier to go for a slightly faster flapless landing at a busy airport?
Hi Josh, the Skyhawk you refer to at 2:00 was us N97075. However it was not as scary as you describe from our vantage point. See our take off video: ua-cam.com/video/V1LZp3yPEDI/v-deo.html Depth Perception: I think from your ground level vantage point it was difficult to judge the distance between a moving object and the end of the runway both in the distance. Love your videos though!
Good stuff. Currently a student pilot based at KSLC and you're spot on with stating how GA friendly the place is. Getting used to all the radio calls was definitely daunting at first but it definitely gets easier with each lesson.
Student pilot at U42. Lets fly sometime after getting out certs! My ksl ad looking for flying friends failed. LOL
How’s flying going

Very cool to see the pot still ! A miniature version of the ones the guys use in Scotland to create Glenlivet, Glenfiddich, and Laphroaig. Etc.
Nice video once again. That road at 17:20 looks fantastic to drive on.Absolutely love those kinds of roads.

Great entry into Bravo. Those guys are super to GA. That's so great to see. Have fun at Park City!
Did my Private at PVU! Was always fun flying into SLC!
As usual another outstanding video. Your photography and narration are spot on. You hav a way of making us feel like we are there with you. Thanks.
Words can't describe how beautiful this country is. Thank you so much for an outstanding ride along. Excellent filming, etc.

Right in my aviation backyard! Love all the adventure series. You should visit Logan, UT sometime just north of Salt Lake City.

How do you handle the landing fees of landing at a class B airport?
What is the white object on the right side of the road at 45 seconds? Looks like an airplane?
What was the hand controller on your laptop you use for video editing?
AC? Lol the window door?
I enjoy your vids and glad you have a buddy with you. I think Myles is a hot looking man.
Cherokee 180 - best all-around, affordable airplane, imo.
How were you able to determine the location of the fire?(bearing and distance from vor)
It's intimidating to be next to those airliners.
