These ATs did an AMAZING job. Dealt with a very similar injury response (In and out of consciousness, seizures. all from a puck to the face). There should be no one criticizing them, besides themselves once they can re-eval the situation.
hey Brian, i just want to thank you for 1) the quick upload about this and other incidences, and 2) for covering hockey, it doesn’t get the clicks like other sports will but you still cover it and i appreciate that, your channel is extremely insightful.
After 16 years as paramedic if someone wants to move it is near impossible to keep them still, the hardest time I every had was with a lady that 110 pounds, can't imagine how difficult it was with someone that has the size and strength of a professional athlete.
Sometimes, though, it's those people with the tiny frames and/or weight (I do *NOT* mean "little people", for the record) that fight back the hardest, though. It's got nothing to do with "size", as I'm sure you're aware. I think people with smaller frames and/or weight just have a better instinct of "protecting" themselves more optimally BECAUSE they're smaller than the average person.
I think it takes a amazing amount of knowledge to be able to explain things the way Docter Brian does. Anyone can memorize a bunch of terms and recite them but to be able to teach them to total lamen who have no background in medicine and make it easy to follow takes a truly smart man and Brian is that! Great job Doc you are gonna be huge one day on here!
well put, happy to report as a Maple Leafs fan that Tavares is already getting ready to come back and at home, out of hospital less than 24 hours afterwards.

I really enjoy the videos and updates. Since initial injury videos don't have full information, because it's just not available yet, the updates are very helpful and necessary.
Yes, I really enjoy the updates like these when more info becomes available, and I ESPECIALLY appreciated your doubling down on defending the actions of the 1st medic on the ice. He was doing everything h could to keep Tavares safe from injuring himself further while he was too busy being a) severely confused, b) “brainwashed” into the hockey mentality of not showing weakness, and c) out muscling the medic by a lot, I saw WAY too much crap floating around social media last night saying that Tavares falling backwards was the medics fault, while I believe physics had much more to do with that particular misfortune. Thanks!
Great point about the difficulty of controlling and stabilizing him via being on ice with shoes. Those were my exact thoughts as they tried to tend to him -- they must have really grippy shoes, like for Broom Ball.
I think the medics did have Broom Ball type shoes, you can see the spikes on the bottom of their shoes, but they're pretty useless when you're scrabbling about on the outsides of you shoes / getting splayed out trying to stay with him.
At first the announcers made it sound like a skate got him. For a terrifying second or two when I saw the trainer with his hand around his throat I thought we were having another Malarchuk situation.
that’s what i thought they meant too. although i was thinking more like boychuk than malarchuk, since it looked more like he got hit in the face than the neck
I got scared too, then I remembered that the Sabres weren't playing and was relieved since those injuries only happen during Sabres games (Malarchuk and Zednik). Honestly though I think it's good that Perry wasn't able to jump in time, or else Tavares very easily could have taken a skate to the head/neck instead of a knee.
A knee to the face isn't any better...especially when it causes whiplash. I am surprised that this doesn't happen more often with how fast the game is. The trainers should have told JT to stay down and roll him over.
@@AEMoreira81 A knee is definitely better than a skate. A skate is rock hard and could've caused pretty bad facial damage on top of the brain damage. And that's without even talking about the razor sharp knife on the bottom of the skate.

Big fan of the update videos. As the teams and doctors release more info, you can offer more in depth and specific analysis of the injury and possible roads to recovery. Loving the channel regardless
As a leafs fan and a hockey fan in general, this was very reassuring to see, and it helps when someone with a medical background is able to break down everything concisely for those of us without said background.
Dr.: Thank you so much on clarifying the JT was way more "alert" to try and move because I watched that and was a bit upset the way we all saw the staff working with him. I saw he was trying to hold the neck position and I winced when JT went backward. But seeing the Thumbs up I relaxed after that. Thanks for the wonderful update.
This is my first exposure to your videos and I want to say you do a fantastic job. The information is clear and useful and you're a great presenter. It was evident to me that JT was fighting the medical response team a little and I'm glad you confirmed that. Really well done, thanks so much. And of course very best wishes to JT - as a Pens fan I worry myself sick about concussions, so I hope his recovery is as smooth as possible.
Updates were great. It's great to have first impressions as to what may have happened but having another explanation once further tests are done and formal information is released is very useful. It would also be great to see analysis of significant old injuries to have more content to watch (ex: Neymar Jr. World Cup Back Injury, Sidney Crosby's Concussion Journey) I'm Interested in studying Sports & Exercise Medicine post secondary so these videos are fantastic preliminary experience for me. Would love to see more!
Thank-you, Dr. for breaking this down so the layperson can understand what happened. Glad to see that JT is okay. I enjoy these breakdowns. Keep them coming. Again, thank-you. Take care, be safe and healthy.
I'm glad/relieved that you put out this follow-up video on the JT injury situation... My initial reaction to the events in terms of the trainer's response was 'incompetence' . All I could think about was the potential for increased spinal cord damage based on Tavares's repeated attempts to regain a upright position . Your explanation helped alay some of that , and I also realised that the trainer probably didn't actually see the full event transpire (they have many responsibilities at the bench). My First Aid training is limited to 6 annual Emergency military First Aid and SJA training sessions during my time in the Armed Forces but I probably have had a disproportionate amount of opportunities to use that training at sports events and traffic accident scenes and construction work sites... I accept your revised assessment of the on-ice situation , but I am left with one nagging question - why does this trainer (or any other) run onto the ice to a prone , in- distress player , with nothing but a 'puke' towel ?! Everytime I have ever had to do emergency first aid , I grabbed my kit (like I was taught) and then attended to the individuals ... surely the Leafs and the rest of the NHL will take a look at their protocols and minimum equipment requirements for proper response to these events... thanks again for your video.

@Brian Sutterer MD Loved the initial video props for posting so fast. Also really liked this update, not only for the update, but you cleared up some info about how the staff handled it which I think was important because last night and this morning I saw so many people arguing over how it was handled. Then the followup on the testing was good too, so many people were assuming "Come back clear" meant he was ready to go. Im not a doctor, but I was assuming the tests done were for MAJOR injury to the brain or spine and not to determine a concussion and you cleared that up for me. Anyone who watched that must know hes going to need some time to recover. keep up the good work.
Just want to say, I didn't know about your channel before this incident but massive respect for what you're doing it's great to be able to get informed and educated so precisely
I definitely appreciate the update video. Information will come out after the injury initially happens that gives you a better understanding of what happened, which means you can give us a better understanding of what happened, so updates will always be appreciated. One question I have: How important is film of injuries to the doctors' evaluation process? How is the evaluation process different if they do/don't have video?
Thank you for the update video. Yes I think update videos are very helpful and informative. You do such an amazing job with your videos and thank you for praising the AT staff. I too think they did a great job with their response and adaptation to the situation. All athletes are different and no situation is the same; you can only hope that all those situations would be text book but we know that not to be the case. So thank you again and I appreciate your dedication to education through your videos
Tavares tries to get up because he's a hockey player. Hockey players are absolute warriors. This time of year, with the greatest trophy in professional sports being awarded to the team that battles the hardest, you're literally going to have to take limbs from these guys before they quit!! I believe we can chalk this up as "instinct". I love this time of year. Wishing Mr. Tavares a speedy recovery...
I really wished I knew this information a year ago when I had my head injury. I thought for the longest time I was just losing it when I had clear concussion symptoms, but I never went to the doctor because my tests were “clear.” Thank you for informing people

@Lucid Magic yupp.. this is why i think late and dirty high hits and wilson/reaves type of behaviour should result in waay longer suspensions. These guys make mills but pay for it in health
I took a crosscheck and went into the boards with my head snapping back like that. It was 30 years ago and to this day my neck sounds like cracking knuckles when I move my head and it locks when I don't move for a minute or so, this makes falling asleep extremely hard, it cracks loudly when I unlock it, sounds like a homerun and feels like ice lightning radiating from the base of my skull. Also, migraines...lots and lots of migraines. Not a Leaf fan but I wouldn't wish what happened to me on anyone.
Thanks for the update , and for the original report also . Im sure Leaf fans are very concerned about his health . His Wife and Children must have been extremely anxious about him . It is a relief to me personally to know he is OK DML

Since we're talking about hockey hits, would be great to hear your insights on 2009 hit to player named Veli-Matti Savinainen. Right after the hit he starts shaking on the ice.
Anyone who has been a first aider to someone who is not in the right mental state knows that it does not go as smoothly as it does in the classroom. You can try to do all you can but if they want up they just go for it. Good video Doc and glad you cover the NHL too.

Thiis medical response to a horrific accident is just what we need in hockey. I found myself last night struggling through endless rediculous opinions and comments on something we all knew was shocking. As hockey and many sports have progressed we are now seeing high performance injuries so freqently but do not understand the long term effects this has on the brain and i definitely prefer to see a reflection of facts and opinions like this. Thank you for your help with these 2 videos I just wish i didnt fall into the comment sections of trolling and jibberish. Like and subscribed.

I thought for the longest time I was just losing it when I had clear concussion symptoms, but I never went to the doctor because my tests were “clear.” Thank you for informing people
Well done and thank you for doing these video's!!
I was watching this game and I honestly thought his career was over, but thankfully he's ok!
Honestly, this still has potential to seriously alter his career.
Kariya was never the same after his injury dont want to be negative but that's the Honest Truth
His career can be over it depends How bad the brain issues show up later in life
contusions are always scary it can lead to permanent damage in the brain
Thanks Brian, glad to know what's going on with John T it was an unfortunate accident, hope he has a speedy recovery an Prayer's for Him and his Family, concerned Habs Fan here...
Make more!! Great content!
Excellent reporting, thank you.
Habs fan really wishing JT a speedy recovery. We never want to see that happen to any player
GET WELL SOON CAPTAIN. THE BOYS WILL GET IT DONE FOR YOU!!! WE LOVE YOU 91

Jason Spezza: “We want to win hockey games so we can get (John Tavares) back in the lineup...That’s what John wants us to do.”

@Lucid Magic yupp.. this is why i think late and dirty high hits and wilson/reaves type of behaviour should result in waay longer suspensions. These guys make mills but pay for it in health
Great channel and I like these update videos. 🙂👍
Great job! Much appreciated!
I like your clear presentation. Fantastic. I'd trust everything you're saying.
Yes do an update vid, its awesome and helps us!
Great job, just subscribed!
these videos are amazing !
Thanks for the update , and for the original report also .
Im sure Leaf fans are very concerned about his health .
His Wife and Children must have been extremely anxious about him .
It is a relief to me personally to know he is OK

I watched the video last night and really enjoyed it. I loved this one as well however there is just one thing bothering me. That poster in the background is falling off and its really messing with my OCPD 😂
The sleeve of the jersey for me
Thank you for giving us some insight!
wow a health video without trying to scare people about covid good job man
Since we're talking about hockey hits, would be great to hear your insights on 2009 hit to player named Veli-Matti Savinainen. Right after the hit he starts shaking on the ice.
Anyone who has been a first aider to someone who is not in the right mental state knows that it does not go as smoothly as it does in the classroom. You can try to do all you can but if they want up they just go for it. Good video Doc and glad you cover the NHL too.
Thanks for the update doc
I have watched two videos of yours. All about the Tavares hit. I am now a subscriber. To answer your question asked at the end of this video I like them both. If I find a way to rate you I’ll give max stars. I’m not a tech guy though so wish me luck.
God bless.
Good to know. Glad he was released so soon. That's a positive.
Thanks for the update
Awesome work doc and this sounds like some good news
I appreciate the update of the injury coming from a worried leafs fan
Thiis medical response to a horrific accident is just what we need in hockey. I found myself last night struggling through endless rediculous opinions and comments on something we all knew was shocking. As hockey and many sports have progressed we are now seeing high performance injuries so freqently but do not understand the long term effects this has on the brain and i definitely prefer to see a reflection of facts and opinions like this. Thank you for your help with these 2 videos I just wish i didnt fall into the comment sections of trolling and jibberish. Like and subscribed.
Great update. Not to mention Tavares had skates on so if he really tried to get up and had the faculties... it’s near impossible with street shoes to prevent a person with skates doing whatever they want on ice.
