💯👉The cars had a idle dip when they were brand new, so you're never really going to have a perfect idle when you come to a stop, sometimes they would even stall.
@@ClassicGBodyGarage that car should Bang into second gear and cook the tires, stock... if you still have the original valve body in that transmission it's precious, is required for it the bang into second gear the way it should, specific to the Grand National and surprisingly the 442s... and adjust that transmission cable near the throttle body, push in the detent and slide it out two notches towards the radiator👍 ... and put new vacuum hoses underneath the turbo, that noise is most likely dry-rotted control arm bushings from the downpipe.
@@SHADOWBLACKs650 That GN came equipped with a D-4 ( maybe D-5 ) converter in the trans. Flame hardened or something. I did rebuild mine because of just being beat on before i got it. (Rubber on the rear quarter panel and exhaust) I believe there was an extra solenoid in the trans as well. I'm not a transmission wrench turner. But my Vin 7 always brought a smile to my face when under boost.
Grand Nationals were never good at burnouts. A stock 5spd mustang or camaro would embarrass them off the line, then the turbo kicks and the the GN wins the race. Now I knew a guy back in the day with a 50shot on his GN. That car could lay a couple of black streaks on the pavement! A quality converter should be the next mod. Or maybe a 50-shot! Cool car.
@@jordanwiley4582 That is very surprising as 2500 rpm can really affect city mpg. I thought it was closer to 1800-2000. Can you actually footbrake a stock GN to 2500?
@Charlie BThis is my experience, not magazine articles. All the mustangs I hung around hooked hard. Most were in the mid 13s (some 12s). My 350hp 4spd vette was a high 13 car (1.8 60' with 295 50 BFGs and 3.55s) and I got beat on the drag strip all the time by those little 5.0s. I only raced a GN once, outside College Station, TX from a roll on the highway leaving town. It had 17" billet wheels on it, Very cool back then. (1990?) I was pulling him into triple digits. I let off first (no OD), and I still remember how that turbo sounded as he pushed through. Sorry to hear about that '88 SS.
Well for the record I barely got into it. I will have a video in the future showing it's TRUE potential once the car is completely sorted and get some miles on it. Didnt want to RIP on it the very first drive.
@BwayneAnnaLee At the dragstrip in the 90s a stock 87-93 5.0 was about as rare as a virgin pornstar. I'm talking racing, legal or otherwise, and a lightly modded mustang was faster than most GNs in the quarter. Anyone that went to the drag strip could see this. The aftermarket was not into GNs at the time and they typically ran high 13s in the quarter, about the same as my vette. I have never seen a GNX in person, but they were about 1/2 sec faster I think.
@@ClassicGBodyGarage back then we used the hooker ceramic-coated they sounded nice or just dump it out onto the front right wheel but you got to cut a hole in that inner fender

Didnt want to. Still have it all and may have it rebuilt eventually. This was a quick fix that works well.
Any updates on the GN. Any way you'd sell it?
I post updates on the Classic Gbody Garage Instagram and Facebook pages. I take it out here and there and will have in out in a few months once the salt is off the roads. I can make a few video shorts since thats a thing now on UA-cam. I have no plans to sell it.
Do u guys have the grand national for sale?
I had 87 gn after I graduated 🎓
Make sure you keep this car forever 🤣🥺
No plans to get rid of it
wtf.... pick a part. All right man I'm invested in the progress of this GN now. I am hurtin though ahhaha how in the heck. This might even be fun to fix up!
Check back on the entire series on how I got to get it going again! Thanks for watching!
Hi does anyone know where I can find the black rubber strips ( 2) that push into the rear chrome bumper 1979 Pontiac GP. Thanks
There are GP groups on Facebook where you can ask.
💯👉The cars had a idle dip when they were brand new, so you're never really going to have a perfect idle when you come to a stop, sometimes they would even stall.
Yeah I am learning they are very temperamental.
Vacuum Brake booster on a GN ?????
Dont be surprised. Way more common than you think.
Hydro prone to big time failures and NOT STOPPING. And really expensive to repair or replace. So people convert to vacuum brakes...
Cool car.
The GNs had a 2500 converter stock.
I'll give you a crispy thousand dollar bill for that g body brother lol
🤝
Give my 30 of those and you can have my mint 87 with a mere 61 thousand kms..forty two thousand something miles since I'm Canada 👍👍🤣🤣
💯👉Take the ugly exhaust off ,it's wrong for the car, empty the turbo out into the fender well, it won't be that loud
Yeah it's the Monte SS style.
@@ClassicGBodyGarage back then we used the hooker ceramic-coated they sounded nice or just dump it out onto the front right wheel but you got to cut a hole in that inner fender
How?? Where? Why not me
no junk title disrespecting
Watch the series and see
Sell it to me 🙏🏼
Please work on the car in a time lapse and tell all the details intermittently
Ill give you 10k for it right now
