    I feel offended by Sam being called "servant" of Frodo. He is the Bearer of the Ring Bearer.

    • @LoreOfTheRingsYT
      @LoreOfTheRingsYT  4 роки тому +111

      Sam gladly took this title himself. Frodo was considered the greatest creature in Sam's life. Sam loved him as a friend. He had no cares for honor or glory, which is shown when he utterly rejects the quest, and looks for Frodo in Cirith Ungol.

    • @Gwildor2020
      @Gwildor2020 4 роки тому +28

      They don't use the term in the film at all. The closet you get is Sam calling him Mr. Frodo. I believe in the books he calls him Master Frodo at some points. It is out of respect. Their relationship is that of a British Officer of the early 20th Century and their batman, or orderly.

    • @Dimitrije_Sukovic
      @Dimitrije_Sukovic 4 роки тому +10

      @@Gwildor2020 I believe referring to one as "master" is an archaic equivalent of calling someone a "mister." Like you said, it's out of respect, like emphasising someone as a gentleman.

    • @SomethingLegit1
      @SomethingLegit1 4 роки тому +36

      Funnily enough, this pet peeve is what makes Sam and his story so amazingly good. All Sam ever wanted was to be Frodo's servant, and if he was anything else, he would have perished to the ruin of all.
      When Sam takes the ring from Frodo's supposed dead body, he is given visions of greatness and grandeur, in an attempt by the ring to tempt him. It is due to Sam's simple nature that he doesn't heed those temptations, never seeking heroism or grandeur (in *direct* contrast to his movie fantasy of "Samwise the Brave"), but being content as Frodo's servant. This is the same temptation that Gandalf and Galadriel do not dare to even try to face.
      Therein lies Sam's strongest point. That is why he did end up saving the world - because of his simple nature. Sam essentially stood firm where any strong ally could not have. Tolkien was a brilliant author.

    • @LoreOfTheRingsYT
      @LoreOfTheRingsYT  4 роки тому +18

      @@SomethingLegit1 Sauron neglected what Gandalf saw. I agree wholeheartedly, Sam was simple and he wished naught for anything else. He was content, what more can one ask? The One Ring had especially the Power to dominate powerful beings, and that's why Sam was almost unaffected by the Ring, for he was not powerful.

      During the last alliance the forces of the west spent years besieging the black gate. They were likely well supplied and had sufficient siege engines for the task. Aragorn’s rag tag group had just been through a battle and had made a forced march through enemy territory while being harassed by the enemy. They had no lines of supply, no siege engines to take the gate and had not fortified their positions. Bad leadership

      @@jeffhreid Good leadership. The other leaders conferred with Aragorn, who was looked on as the top leader of humans, and he was counseled by the wisest present, Gandalf. They chose to sacrifice themselves, to draw the attention of Sauron, in order to assist the Ringbearer in his mission.
      Placing the overall good of Middle-Earth ahead of their own well-being was an act of wisdom and courage that should be lauded. This very point was not only made in the book, but by Tolkien in various letters after he published the novel.

    I recently asked this question elsewhere, but I didn’t get a satisfactory answer so I thought I’d try here:
    How did Aragorn manage to convince thousands of Gondor and Rohan’s soldiers to march blindly in to their deaths. It’s not like they were aware of Frodo and Sam.

    • @LoreOfTheRingsYT

      This passing can grant us some wisdom:
      "Yet suddenly for Faramir his heart was strangely moved with a feeling that he had not known
      before. Here was one with an air of high nobility such as Aragorn at times revealed, less high
      perhaps, yet also less incalculable and remote: one of the Kings of Men born into a later time, but
      touched with the wisdom and sadness of the Elder Race. He knew now why Beregond spoke his
      name with love. He was a captain that men would follow, that he would follow, even under the
      shadow of the black wings"
      Faramir was probably the greatest mortal man at the end of the third age, surpassed only by Aragorn. Aragorn had rescued Gondor in its dire need, and even healed many of its citizens. People had great respect for him, and would do the same as they did for Faramir. The Rohirrim had already followed their King to the Siege of Gondor, which was the same situation. They were loyal to their King. You also must remember Gandalf and his inspiration. This was his task, to inspire the forces of the free peoples to oppose Sauron. He also wore Narya which enhanced this ability. I hope this was a satisfactory answer, and if not, tell me what you find missing!

      Aragorn had inspired all by bearing the banner of Elendil. The king of Rohan, Eomer was ready to follow Aragorn and the Rohirrim were already ready to die in any case. Important Gondorian figures such as Prince Imrahil and Faramir supported Aragorn after meeting him-Imrahil was technically the leader of Gondor as per Aragorn's request, so his knights and the armies were at his command.
      Aragorn allowed any men to stay behind at the crossroads of the fallen king as well as to fight for Cair Andros, leaving only 7000 at the Black Gate.
      Aragorn had this aura that inflamed men's passions, an echo of Elendil and the men of the lost West that people followed him or became his allies apart from the most wicked or twisted.

      @@SantomPh I love how he allowed men to stay behind, ones from Rohan or Southern Gondor who hadn't witnessed the pure evil of Mordor and Sauron as intensively as others, but he did it by allowing them to keep their honour and pride by giving them tasks, tangible and credible tasks like re-taking Cair Andros.
      It's an often overlooked part of the book and the telling but I think it's very important to allow the reader to understand what kind of King he'd be and what kind of people he would lead.

    Love the video. Good detail and followed that part of the story from the book pretty faithfully. Always wondered if forces x10's and more than x10's their match meant that one force had 60,000 and the other force 70-90,000 men/orcs for a total of at least 130,000-150,000 or if it was 6,000 (Men of West) x 10 x10 = 600,000 men/orcs which seems like quite a bit of overkill. The wording is ambiguous but I estimate that there were 150,000 men, orcs and trolls attacking the men of the west. Hated that Peter Jackson made the Gondorians look like the Red shirted Security guys on a Star Trek landing party.

    • @LoreOfTheRingsYT
      @LoreOfTheRingsYT  4 роки тому +2

      I also hated that Peter Jackson underrated the Gondorians, but it was simply to make Mordor seem a larger threat at the siege of Minas Tirith. I really missed the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth tho. That was a bummer :/ The Lords of the West had approximately 6 000 soldiers, so Mordor had at least 60 000, but probably much more. Remember that Denethor told us that only 1 finger of Mordor had yet been stretched. There were at least 15 000 Haradrim at the siege of Minas Tirith, so the total forces must have estimated to at least 40 000 I think. That makes your assumption pretty reasonable to me! BTW cool name, is it a reference to Romendacil?

    • @romandacil3984
      @romandacil3984 4 роки тому

      @@LoreOfTheRingsYT Yep Romandacil was the assumed name of the 8th and 19th Kings of Gondor meaning East Victor. I spent 9 years in the Far East so use the moniker. I would rather have seen the Knights of Dol Amroth at the siege of Minas Tirith as well instead of the Army of the Dead but it was more for pacing reasons and not having to introduce a new character. Just like Beregond and the Woses were left out. I estimate that Mordor had 20,000 gathered in East Osgiliath, another 20,000 from Minas Morgul and 18,000 Haradrim. While another host of 40,000 assailed Cair Andros and entered Anorien. The Battle at the Black Gate had the Host of Gorgoroth plus the Host of Nurn with an army of Easterlings so the 130-150,000 sound about right.

    Tolkien did serve on the Western Front in the Great War, if only for about six weeks, he was evacuated with fever. There are a number of odd bits in Lord of the Rings, that speciffically refer to his service. Also the maps in the original Lord of the Rings, are reminisent of the trench maps of the area of the Somme where Tolkien served. So to stir it up, who is the Hero of Lord of the Rings?

      You are underestimating just how outnumbered the Men of the West are. The Easterlings alone were 3 times the whole host and Trolls walked alongside Orcs and Haradrim.
      They were never under threat, there were even more armies inside Mordor. Tactics are not important when the enemy is as puny as that.
      Gandalf also tells Imrahil that Sauron will try to capture the big names and execute them like a man tries to take a sting from an fly-hence he will draw out the battle.

    Got a question, a lot of video games and such feature the/a "War in the North" which is (as the name implies) north of Morder/Gondor/Rohan/etc. Is this made exclusively for that media, or is that actually something that exists in untold stories or such? I mean considering the close proximity Rhun, and the dwarves up there, it's certainly something I can see being a thing, but I am not aware if there is any material by Tolkein that speaks of it, since I have only read the Hobbit and LotR books.

    There are two things i don't understand about this:
    1. Where did Sauron get all those new troops after he lost almost his entire army on Pelennor fields?
    2. Why did he take the bait even though he knew about the hobbits? He should have figured out that Aragorn doesn't have the ring after all, and he could clearly see that his army had no hope of breaching the black gate, so why not just scour Mordor looking for the hobbits, while a garrison held the black gate? He should have more than enough troops for that.

    • @whiteknightcat
      @whiteknightcat 4 роки тому +4

      Despite the size of the massive force sent against Gondor, it was but a portion of the full military might pent up in the Black Land, waiting to be unleashed.
      Sauron did NOT know the Hobbits had the ring. Recall that Sam took it from Frodo after Shelob stung him, so it was never found when Frodo was stripped after he was found and taken to Cirith Ungol.

    • @SantomPh
      @SantomPh 4 роки тому +2

      Sauron didn't lose his army on the Pelennor Fields, just the first wave. The army at the Black Gate was just as big as the last one. He had enough forces to attack Lothlorien, Mirkwood and Erebor/Dale as well as calling up the Corsairs, whom Aragorn intercepted with the Dead.
      Sauron didn't really know the hobbits had the one ring, just that they were spying in Mordor and lost their things. Aragorn does his best to threaten Sauron and make him think he has the Ring,by challenging him in the Palantir and announcing himself as king. Sauron has always hated the line of Isildur, so his attention is focused on Aragorn and Gandalf now. He was already intrigued by Pippin's use of the Palantir, realizing someone is using Halflings against him for some reason or other.
      Sauron however is extremely arrogant and feels Aragorn is the one who has taken the ring. Hence he ignores the Hobbit threat in his realm.

    I've pitched this idea to a different lotr channel but never took. With his advances in genetics, chemistry and industrialization, can saruman take over middle Earth without using the one ring?

    • @LoreOfTheRingsYT
      @LoreOfTheRingsYT  4 роки тому

      Well it really depends. That means Saruman could not have fallen, and that means the history itself would be completely different, perhaps Sauron would have become the victor. It would take many of thousands years to discover these things as you speak of, except industrialization which was already there. We know that Tolkien intended perhaps the 7th or 8th age to be our time, but they were far longer. After Sauron was destroyed, Saruman would have left for Valinor, for he could no longer fulfill his mission. If we however say that Sauron won and Saruman was a successful ally (something he really wasn't, but let's pretend) then he could perhaps have ruled many men under Sauron. He would eventually find in Mordor the missing recipe for his own Ring of Power, and Sauron and Saruman could perhaps have started wars between each other, kind of like 1st WW. I haven't really dug in and thought much about it, but that's what I suppose.

    • @Demolitiondude
      @Demolitiondude 4 роки тому

      Saruman perfected genetics with the creation of the urukai, and churning them out in massive scale. His mastery of chemistry was demonstrated at helm's deep. I think he could have taken a good chunk with what he had. Probably a good chunk more if he continued experimentation. Bigger and better urukai, development of firearms, and the industrial output to keep his armies armed and armored.

    • @LoreOfTheRingsYT
      @LoreOfTheRingsYT  4 роки тому +1

      @@Demolitiondude He didn't pull orcs out of pits, he bred men with orcs. His explosions were also used in Mordor, so nothing new there. Saruman did not invent much on his own. His voice was his weapon. Given enough time in Mordor he would learn how to forge his own ring, but that was with the help of Sauron.

    • @Demolitiondude
      @Demolitiondude 4 роки тому

      That's still a pretty high speed of production. Having several units of urukai ready and armed.
