There is something so oddly amusing that in a sport where you typically think of the contestants as these aerodynamic sleek race cars that one of them was just a fat box with fans on the end.
Although these cars have not been very successful in racing, they are among the most iconic and recognizable cars for any racing fan, so they will be remembered forever. I don't know if you can ask for anything more from a failed project.
Great list. Not furious about anything on it. Others would be the Ford RS200, The Porsche Indycars (both the '80-81Interscope and the '89-90 debacle) and the Lancia LC-1
The RS200 actually did see some success, it was used extensively in Rallycross during the late 80s and early 90s where it got some pretty notable wins, and was the primary rival to the Lancia Delta S4
But the Lancia did win 3 races and was fast enough for Ricardo Patrese come 2° in the campionship, the groupe C rules did make the life of the car short tho
The wingless 9X8 deserved a mention, it was doing really welll in it's Le Mans debut but it had mechanical issues, after that Peugeot gave it a wing and couldn't keep up with the rest during this years race.
The 9X8 did got two podiums. Last year at 6 Hours of Monza and this year's 8 Hours of Bahrain with the new 9X8, that finished originally 4th, although 3rd due to the 51 Ferrari stripped from podium because of exceeding its tire allocation. The new 9X8 did also finished 4th at Fuji, which is another good result for it. The wingless 9X8 could have also got a podium at Qatar, but it sadly ran out of fuel and got DQ'd afterwards (F you, ACO and FIA.) Tbh, if I ran Peugeot Sport, I could have actually just create a new car with a wing from the beginning of the program instead of a wingless one.
Tbf, the 9X8 is being HAMMERED by BoP atm. I don't know what the FIA seems to think they know, but going by the BoP last I checked it's possibly the fastest car in the field unrestricted.
Peugeot said they had issues running the car at the optimal ride height so couldn't get the most out of the wingless car. They modified it and added the wing so the car had a bigger setup window, and from this years WEC season, they've been a hell of a lot more consistent
In stead of the WSC-95 you should have mentioned the Porsche LMP2000, that was supposed to to succeed the 911 GT1, but was cancelled and eventually morphed into the Carrera GT.
This is a great list. Unfortunately it didn’t include the brutality fast but super fragile front engined Mustang GTP. A beautiful however spectacularly unusual layout for a top flight sports car. Its successor the Probe GTP used a more conventional mid engine layout but also suffered from reliability issues.
And to develop technology up to the year 2000, it was an absolute weapon and you can't forget there'd be no R34 skyline if nissan hadn't bought one and took it to bits to see how it ticked
Great video idea and great video! Another car I'd add to the list is the Koenigsegg CCGT. Designed for the GT1 regulations, but just as it was ready, the regulations were changed. I imagine if the first step into racing had worked for Koenigsegg, they might have built other cars for racing, maybe a prototype.
The 2008 hatchback Subaru Impreza WRC is another great contender, launched partly through the 2008, to replace the underperforming, unreliable and ill-handling saloon version that was used in 2006, 2007 and early in 2008. The hatchback finished it's first rally ( in Greece ) in second place, but sadly Subaru pulled out of WRC after the 2008 season, probably due to the recession, it was a very sad fate for a car that deserved alot better. Ford RS200 also arrived to late to the Group B class, and could have done alot better if Group B had continiued for longer, but sadly the tragic accidents in 1986 spelled the end of Group B, but just like the Metro 6R4 it did end up in rallycross aswell.
I think a pretty interesting racing story is the team that Emerson Fittipaldi made in 1975, but never did all that well. Emerson’s brother was on the team but even he didn’t do well
Good one. The wake of that car/team does make for some interesting stories. Without it, James Hunt might just be another flash in the pan driver instead of WC and peerless announcer. And Fittipaldi's career resurrection in the US was something to behold.
Wilson set up the team and raced for it in 1975. Emerson only moved to the team in 1976, but Wilson wasn't racing anymore by then. Wilson ran the team for the most part, while Emerson ran his career into the ground.
There are probably too many late Group B projects to make the cut in a video like this. You could even extend it to the follow-on cars like Audi's mid-engine project and Toyota's 222B.
2nd and 3rd overall and 1st and 2nd in the GT1 class wasn't bad in 1997 given the only car that beat it was the WSC-95 LMP which technically was quicker, that said the quickest Longtail BMW Motorsport No42 driven by JJ Lehto might have won overall if he'd finished.
Don't forget the toyota formula 1 2010 car. They bailed the project but they were the first with the double diffuser. Before brawn. If they raced in 2010 many say they would crush the opponents and would be champions
If you dim the background lighting a bit and get a softer light on your face you'll create more background separation, you could get a faster lens (lower F stop) to create even more background separation and it'll look even better. Either way, great stuff. Sound is perfect.
One car that deserved better, not because it was unsuccessful, but because it doesn't get the recognition it deserves, is 100% the Jaguar XJR-14. It dominated the 1991 WSC season, and yet, because Jaguar pulled it from Le Mans, it doesn't get nearly as remembered as it should, much unlike the Mazda 787B that gets far more recognition than it deserves out of a massively unsuccessful 2 years of competition, just because it won Le Mans. While the 787B appears everywhere and everyone knows it, even creating ridiculous myths around it, the XJR-14 is barely remembered, and it doesn't even appear in games at all, unlike other much more unsuccessful Group C cars.
There's a Gordon Murray video where talks about the Fan Car. He asked a lawyer, what "primary purpose of a movable device" meant in his interpretation. That at least 50% of the purpose is not aerodynamic. So Gordon calculated and found that 55% of the fan's airflow was through the radiators, 45% sucking the car to the ground. The FIA did a test of their own and came out with nearly the identical figure.
Very cool video. Another car that I think a lot of people don't know about but belongs in thus conversation is the 1957 Corvette SS. A story worth looking up for those who don't know.
I have a modern one to add to this list. The NGTC spec, BTCC Audi A4. If Driver/Owner Rob Austin had been a little luckier in sponsorship acquisition, and being able to hire the drivers he wanted, the cars Sherman and Panzer could have been BMW slaying weapons and championship threats. Instead we got a midfield packing team with occasional flashes of speed and a whole 1 race win instead.
Thanks! Yeah I usually make the illustrations myself, in fact the Toyota in the thumbnail for this video is an illustration I did based on a photograph of the model GT-One on my desk in the background haha
If there was a more modern list of cars, I would put the Mazda RT24-P. Another car that that was within this time line was the Jordan 199. Imagine if Jordan won the F1 WC.
My old love the 307 WRC is missing. It had poor reliability, that 4 gear transmission was the worst idea in WRC in decades, but great speed in the first year and was hampered by the Pirelli tires in the second season, when Michelin was clearly best in class. After that Peugeot pulled out of WRC. I'm sure it had the potential of giving Loeb and Citroen much more trouble. The engine was the fastest in class and it had great aerodynamics.
I saw the Trans Am Audi Quattro in 1988 when it was still relatively unrestricted. What a monster that car was, passing people on the outside and just generally walking away from the competition - it was great to see! It’s too bad the Trans Am people didn’t insist that the rest of the field catch up with the Audi instead of throwing a tantrum and kicking them out.
The Mercedes CLK GT1? You mean the CLK GTR/LM? The car that was so good that it literally killed the GT1 class? I mean, it surely deserves a better reputation because the 1999 CLR destroyed the reputation of the CLK GTR completely unfairly.
@@igorlis380 Did it? The Sierra did better, the Escort didn't do as well in rally as expected, didn't do as well on the track and was kind of out of step with everything else.
Great video, so many legends covered there. For me, Toyota TS010 needs a mention for sure. Savage car that should have won more. I'd also say the 1994 Toyota, the one that was within an hour of winning Le Mans until its gear linkeage failed, leaving the driver (I believe Brilliant Bob Wollek?) fumbling under the cover to pull it into gear while the Dauer 962 sailed on by. I'd also say the Lola Aston B09/60. A truly epic car that won a lot in ELMS, but never stood a chance at the Big One thanks to the diesels.
The TVR Speed 12. Another one killed by rule changes before it hit the track. Then famously cancelled as a road car when the company boss, in possibly the ONLY socially conscious measure the company ever took, declared it too dangerous to be put into the hands of the typical road driving customer. Let's see, aluminium chassis, fibreglass body, and ... a monster 7.7 litre V12 with a power output north of 900 BHP. With NO driver safety aids whatsoever. One example was built, and the owner was specially vetted before being allowed to buy (and drive) it. It's been described as Satan's Own Chariot. Also considered frightening to drive even by professional racing drivers.
The TVR speed twelve is possibly the most dangerous car that have ever made😮😮😢😮😢😮! Even professional drivers was in danger when they was going to drive TVR speed twelve😮😮😮😮😮😮! It was much more dangerous for driving compare to almost any other handful car😮😮!
It's great that three brands in this video have returned to the top class of motorsport, and I can't wait to see how Aston Martin grapples with the titans next year.
the RS002 is not an entirely fair example as the category for which it had been built was scrapped before the 1st season would begin. There was a lot if really cool cars built to Group S regulations, though.

It proved to be the fastest in its class and even outran the Hypercar race cars for a time, but like the Toyota GT-ONE, mechanical issues plagued the car. It was fixed, but it lost a lot of positions after repairs and ultimately finished with a poor position. the following year, NASCAR announced that their Garage 56 entry has been retired, so it was never given a second chance. The AMR1 was 6l V8 and it sounded glorious, I have a picture of the 14 year old me sitting in Tiff Needels on at the brands hatch 1000ks . It may not have been quick by my god it sounded gorgeous
Staying on cars that deserved better or were never raced, it would be a cool video to go over the group B and group S projects that never rallied. Some of them are either crazy, from auto companies you really wouldn't expect, or both.
I would've loved to see the F50 GT1 back then, as I remember seeing photos of it in a magazine in the mid-1990s. The car is such a beauty, and it ever looked to me like the F40 LMs weren't so-so GT competitors. Whether it would've been worthy of a win, I do not know, but it certainly was worth better than being buried in a cheikh's garage somewhere.
The Mercedes CLK-GTR. Dominated the fia gt championship, but failed in Le mans despite being one of, if not the fastest car there. Then the CLR in 1999 with the infamous Webber flip
From this video, the Lancia Delta S4 should make this list because of shortened Group B. They could've had a dynastic rivalry with Peugeot and Audi were it not for Toivonen's crash.
Nice work there automobilistic with this video a wonderfull watch but also great choices too as my pick is porsche 959 if i had the money so die cast would do 😅.
Not furious, but I feel the Ferrari F40 IMSA GTO and 333SP could be included. Despite having little to zero direct factory involvement both were mildly and in the case of the 333, regionally, successful.
I would add the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo from 2015. A very interesting concept that ran one race at Le Mans and was never given the chance for more development after.
I was going to say the same thing, they found a "loophole" in the rules they thought they could exploit to get very high downforce very efficiently it was just rushed and poorly managed that it never worked correctly. In sims where it still isn't accurate to the original plan it still is somewhat competitive if driven well and it has crazy straight line speed due to it's design. I think the real car they had hoped to have the energy recovery be deployed from the rear wheels which would've made it AWD in the acceleration zones where it suffers most
The 2J's only real success is as a proof of concept. It was terrible as a racecar due to its unreliability. It was a cool idea, but kicking up debris was a real concern. Had the fan not been banned and reliability issue solved, a grid of 20-30 fan cars throwing debris at each other (and any unfortunate bystanders) is not a realistic proposition to let slide without regulatory intervention of some kind. On the WSC-95, it did get a few opportunities to race outside of LM24. Thing is that sportscar prototype racing was in a weird place in the after FIA SWC and the IMSA GTP were defunct. In Europe, the ISRS was tryng to get off the ground but the lack of participation led to low grid numbers. The WSC-95 raced at the 1997 ISRS race at Donington and easily won. It was supposedly entered for another race but withdrawn and the ISRS was no more. The car was invited to race in the US by the IMSA successor series, but Joest turned them down because much like the fiasco of 1995, they would've been too hindered in performance be competitive for a win.
McLaren: "ban the 2J, it's cheating and ejecting gravel into the air!" Also McLaren: "we're gonna make our own F1 fan car, something that's never been done before!"

That's why a lot of things are banned just because they make the cars look ugly.
Jim Hall of Chapparal Racing was about function over form although many of his cars were beautiful.
Le Fridge
That's because the Chapparal got all downforce from the floor.

Hendrick Motorsports "T-Rex" (NASCAR); built to the limit of the rule book, ran once and won, immediately banned.
Thank god the Mazda 787b won their last race. they’ve deserve the victory for so long and didn’t ended up in this video
The XJ13 was gorgeous.
Not furious, but I feel the Ferrari F40 IMSA GTO and 333SP could be included. Despite having little to zero direct factory involvement both were mildly and in the case of the 333, regionally, successful.
It's a recap episode :(
It's Automobilistic's :)
I would add the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo from 2015. A very interesting concept that ran one race at Le Mans and was never given the chance for more development after.
that thing probably deserves a whole episode to itself!
I think the real car they had hoped to have the energy recovery be deployed from the rear wheels which would've made it AWD in the acceleration zones where it suffers most
Two cars you missed, the Le Mans Peugeot driven by Pedro Lamy, and the Delta Wing ! Maybe a second episode? Take care!
I've always felt that Mazda pulled the plug on their DPi program just as it was getting competitive.
Wake up honey, new automobilistic video
speaking of Toyota, the Toyota TS050 easily deserved the win at the 2016 Le Mans but a hose clamp had other ideas
another interesting car would have been the sauber mercedes c291 or c292.
the audi lmdh car could also be another subject.
Mario Kart F1 car was crazy!
McLaren: "ban the 2J, it's cheating and ejecting gravel into the air!"
Also McLaren: "we're gonna make our own F1 fan car, something that's never been done before!"
When did mclaren make an F1 fan car?
Xj13 looks better than e type
Will there be a Video on Top 10 best looking racing cars ever made?
How about the Andrea Moda S921 ? It was a good car (not as bad as it looked On paper ), but hampered by a mismanaged team and lack of developement
There are honorable 🎖 😀 mentions and honorable 🎖 ✨️ racing cars that they might seem in lower rankings of races, but they are always honorable 🎖 😉 and always remember as awesome iconic 😎 😀 👏 😉 😄 👍 race cars in history.
kinda missed the orange glasses tho
I have a great Car you should do a Video on. The 1969 Dodge Daytona/ Plymouth Superbird. They were banned from Nascar because they were alot faster than its competition. And Their 426 hemi was also banned
So much Grand Turismo nostalgia for the GT-One. I like the top ten format too!
The biggest damage and suffrage to Toyota GtOne came from having M. Brundle behind the wheel
#1 Should be the Nissan LMP1 car
23:30 is that not an Aston Martin?
Well spotted, looks like a DBR1 - I can't believe that made it in! Apologies
@ all good, I dread to think of how many hours of footage you poured over!
Hardly furious lol,was a good list but the Toyota 7 maybe? and and someone else suggested the RS200 group B.
What about the rally Audi Quattro RS 002 prototype
For the potential group s
A car to include should be the Lancia Delta S4. Racing only one season without winning the WRC despite being the fastest car.
Fastest car yet unreliable with the fastest driver being killed by it.
Where are those nice glasses bro, they fitted you very nice
What about the rallyRS 002 prototype. Audi Quattro
I luv the aero of the Toyota. 😘 B.E.A.utiful ! Not as good as the IMSA 98Eagle 'boxcar' 😮 that was... 😱
What about of Vector M12 LM😮?! You must to mention it 😉.
Did Marlboro just pull out last minute to sponsor Toyota in the first bit?
Spyker
22:15 innit mentioned
