I love that GT2 touch, when road going versions were mentioned and song starts. 97 one is much less known, but both red and blue appear in that game, such nostalgia.
Legend has it that 2 road going versions, one that Nissan keeps on display at their museum and the other was (supposedly) sold to a very wealthy customer from the UK. It's said that there's 1 photo of the #2 car in the garage of what looks like a dutch-style half timber home.
There's a race car chassis out there that someone converted for road use. It's 'supposedly' until verified. If the R390 went into production, it would've had the highest sticker price for a Nissan (a million US) and it would be a record that would still stand today.
Indeed. Shame the TS020 never won anything. Especially Le Mans, it's a gran turismo legend and an icon, and so much cooler than that BMW V12 LMR. Mind you, the Ferrari 330P4 only came 2nd too
Except that the TS020 technically did still won Le Mans in 1999. Just not the overall race, they were still first on their class, and the only reason they didn't won the overall race was because of a flat tire.
It sucks, they also dropped out of IMSA with a strong car just before the Hybrid regs. The final remaining car in the last season wasn't doing much because their pay driver was WAY behind the curve, but the car was rapid in cooler conditions.
Nissan used to build GOOD cars, i own a 1992 Nissan it is as well made as ANY other Japanese car of the time ( they all were built PROPERLY ) NO squeaks or rattles, it is RELIABLE and still in GREAT condition!!!!!!!!
Seems like Nissan and Toyota are pretty much antithetical to each other when it comes to race locations. Toyota is successful everywhere in the world (Le Mans, WRC, etc) yet struggled at home. Nissan is successful always in their home ground (JGTC, Fuji 24 hours, and the early Japanese racing series that featured the Hakosuka GT-R) yet wasn't quite as successful everywhere else.
Strange hiccup coming from Nissan. They dominated IMSA GTP class from 1988 to 1991. Also the 300ZX in 1994 won in class in both the 24hrs of Daytona and 24hrs of Lemans.
There is another street legal R390 GT1. Erik Comas drove one of them at Le Mans, and was going to get one of the production cars in lieu of payment but of course that didn't happen. In 2019 he finally acquired one of the former race cars and converted it for road use.
My man. You need your glasses back. You're going to break the universe. XD Also, great video! We all know this isn't the only time Nissan embarrassed them selves at LeMans.
That car with the narrow front track got it wrong. Raindrops fall in a somewhat ideal aerodynamic shape, they are shaped by air resistance to have least resistance. The wide end is at the front, the narrow end at the end (subsonic). Also the steer in must have been terrible, like a motorbike that cant lean into a corner. If they had turned it around 180 degrees, it might have been better.
I don’t know the entire story but I worked for the person who apparently bought this racing program when Nissan pulled out. He had a few of the Nissan cars and had built and sold some new ones over the years. I never saw any of them run but they were pretty
Great video as always. Speaking of interesting ways to read regulations, would you consider making a video about the (front wheel drive) Nissan GT-R LM Nismo?
The fact that Nissan brought out a modified Skyline GT-R from the JGTC to compete with the GT1 cars and actually believed it could compete at the same level... *_That still makes me laugh to this day and it really does smell like something Nissan would try._*
Nissans recent history is a tragedy. They went from high quality, innovative, expertly engineered vehicles. To riding on the coat tails of their name with cheaply engineered, cheaply built, generic slop.
Knew a guy whom had a 350z, very nice car. He also had a bike (forgot make and model) and I asked him how fast it was. He answered: " I do not know, the speedo only goes to 299 km/h". 😂
The GT-1 regs were trash. Cool cars but bad execution. The open-tops could have lead directly into the LMP's and we could have gotten better competition and more manufacturers. just my thoughts. If you loved it, great! Its was "cool" but I think it was a setback that contributed, in some part, to the "Audi years"
I noticed the music you used when talking about the Road Car there, and speaking of, in the Profile on 3 for the R390, it does state there was only the one, so... and, I mean, it is a Japanese game after all... But, either way, I think we do have to be grateful for its existence as gamers, I love the Road Car! And I don't entirely hate the Race Car, either! Jus a shame it seems to have disappeared from Gran Turismo the way it has... That said, the Toyota hasn't really fared much better, either... But, still, it came up on Forza Horizon 3! And I didn't have enough Credits for it, even on sale... That annoyed me no end!
The R90 project was a flop. The R390 program was a half-arsed flop. The R391 program was never going to work and flopped. The LMP1 program was shambolic. In contrast, the American-run GT-ZX Turbo project was a fantastic success, and the Japanese RC prototypes were pretty handy too. Weird how inconsistent Nissan was with Sports Cars
I mean this nicely, as I like both, but without the Glasses you almost look like F4mi. Would be great to see a cross over between info about the car, and info about the console that made it famous.
Recent news from Nissan makes it sound as though their days are numbered. They have about a year's worth of working capital. Beyond that it's anybody's guess.
Everytime Nissan invests in the product they see a huge growth in popularity. Then they rest on their laurels and watch sales fall until they can no longer afford to invest in R&D without a bailout. They know the key to success, but wont learn from their own history
It's a damn shame Nissan today is a shell of its former glorious self, and is now once again on the verge of bankruptcy.

Nissan is successful always in their home ground (JGTC, Fuji 24 hours, and the early Japanese racing series that featured the Hakosuka GT-R) yet wasn't quite as successful everywhere else.
Australian touring car champ with R32 GT-R
4:28 no, only one unit exists. Not 2, not 4, not nothing else, just 1 and that's it. Whoever insists otherwise is plain stupid
Strange hiccup coming from Nissan. They dominated IMSA GTP class from 1988 to 1991. Also the 300ZX in 1994 won in class in both the 24hrs of Daytona and 24hrs of Lemans.
Just found your channel. And proceeded to spend my day off binging your videos. Awesome stuff.
Mann you perfected the narrator voice. I was expecting you to be a wizened British commentator who would narrate D Day 😂
Entering 4 cars and having 4 finish the 24 hours of hell is impressive especially snagging a podium while they are at it.
In 2001 my wife and I test drove a Nissan Sentra. As we drove the armrest broke off into my lap. Needless to say, there is a Toyota in our driveway.
Toyota ain't much better with all their motors blowing up and what not
There is another street legal R390 GT1. Erik Comas drove one of them at Le Mans, and was going to get one of the production cars in lieu of payment but of course that didn't happen. In 2019 he finally acquired one of the former race cars and converted it for road use.
It's a shame, because the car is absolutely gorgeous and I would love to see the road car in person.
nice touch with the dealer tune from gt2 when the road car appears.
I love the R390. Such an awesome car. I'm soooo glad that video games have allowed me to at least pseudo drive one of these glories!
Always thought the R390 was the best looking of the GT1 cars.
Ahh I’ve been waiting for this video! Love it! The R390 is my favourite car of all time. I just think it’s a beautiful machine.
My man. You need your glasses back. You're going to break the universe. XD
Also, great video!
Another great and informative video as always!
One of my favorite cars of all time. I absolutely love the R390s lines and performance
The 90 decade Nissan race models was awesome 👌 👏. R390 was awesome and even R33 cars was almost awesome.
The Gran Turismo Background Music is a nice touch.
I see we've dropped the 70s swinger look. Nice.
I've always liked the 98' R390 GT1, remember it being one of my favourite cars in GT2, great looking car in race trim.
Great video,great work!Love it!
Another great video from you! I love this car since Gran Turismo 2.
I like the concept of your videos. Coming from granturismo 3 and 4 I really love seeing cars from that era.
I really dig the livery on that R391
I just think the fascia of a Nissan Micra K12 on a GT1 car is just hilarious.
Awesome video as always Sir! Hope you're having a great Saturday!
Thank you for this video! Amazing facts and footage!
ARGH, i can see his EYES!! HE HAS EYES!!!
The DeltaWing was inspired. It obviously worried Toyota, who nerfed it off the road into a concrete wall at Le Mans in 2012.
0:33 Unless you happen to be Team Mercedes Benz.
🛫
The fact that Nissan brought out a modified Skyline GT-R from the JGTC to compete with the GT1 cars and actually believed it could compete at the same level...
*_That still makes me laugh to this day and it really does smell like something Nissan would try._*
one of my fav Gran Turismo cars, wish they'd bring it back!
👨🏫 Thanks for all your knowledge. That blue Nissan was amazing looking.
What song is played in the end when the r391 won at fuji?
Nissans recent history is a tragedy. They went from high quality, innovative, expertly engineered vehicles. To riding on the coat tails of their name with cheaply engineered, cheaply built, generic slop.
Besides the R391 there was the courage team running Nissan engines in 1999, they even finished better than the R391 if i remeber correctly
Knew a guy whom had a 350z, very nice car. He also had a bike (forgot make and model) and I asked him how fast it was. He answered: " I do not know, the speedo only goes to 299 km/h". 😂
Where did you get the posters in the background?
Gran turismo jazz is slapping
Please do a video about the Manthey Porsche and the 24hr of Nürburgring
The group c cars are some of the most beautiful ever made. Was lucky enough to see them at Goodwood revival one year.
4:40 They had Jackie Chan racing for them and they didn't win?! POO!
Fortunately McLaren bought the rights to the engine and used in the P1, 🤪
The GT-1 regs were trash. Cool cars but bad execution. The open-tops could have lead directly into the LMP's and we could have gotten better competition and more manufacturers. just my thoughts.
If you loved it, great! Its was "cool"
but I think it was a setback that contributed, in some part, to the "Audi years"
Imagine how different everything would've been if they were to stick with the R390.
I love your videos!
Thank you for the doc. Nissan will always be the one that got away. Crazy good engineering, crazy bad decision making.
What's that song at the end?
9:08 *Insert Mark Webber 2021 Baku GP scream*
Fun fact. Mark Weber is The Stig's favorite airline pilot.
I mean this nicely, as I like both, but without the Glasses you almost look like F4mi. Would be great to see a cross over between info about the car, and info about the console that made it famous.
Vedere la delta wing e poi la gtr lm mi vengono i brividi e mi chiedo se j progettisti siano ancora vivi
Nissan is cooked In 14 - 20 months prob
The R390's engine served as the basis for the V8 used in McLaren road cars
Nissan used to be cool
Love these vids yhe info the character the cars keep it up
If Nissan wanted to they could've dominated every major car market
Hold up, a V8 powered Skyline in the mid 90's!?
I'm now more interested in that Skyline than this.
Ok
The thing is, nissan has no consistent racing program
Recent news from Nissan makes it sound as though their days are numbered. They have about a year's worth of working capital. Beyond that it's anybody's guess.
WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE GLASSES?
where's the orange shades? 😮
My buggest problem Nissan is remastering the R35
Everytime Nissan invests in the product they see a huge growth in popularity. Then they rest on their laurels and watch sales fall until they can no longer afford to invest in R&D without a bailout. They know the key to success, but wont learn from their own history
Lest we not forget the failed front wheel drive LM car
9:15 eh, there's a certain aussie that keeps repeating the stunt
