Yasss! This was the first time I laid eyes on Tommy Shaw! I was 13 and he was like a golden-haired Adonis! My silly school girl crush lasted about two years and I saw Styx 4x! Saw the Grand Illusion tour, the Main Event (Pieces of 8) and Cornerstone. They lost me after Cornerstone though. It was way too overproduced. I started listening to the Ramones after that. LOL!
You are sooooooooooooooooooooo lucky that I almost hate you. I was 6 years old when my mother brought home The Grand Illusion album. I listened once and was hooked. I pulled out the poster that came with the album and when I saw Tommy.... I had a man crush that lasted to this day LOL!!!
Great story!! I will share my Styx tales sometime... including the "Buffalo Adventure" ...Styx have been soundtrack of my life... "Fooling Yourself" even saved my life , one terrible dark night of the soul...Love them so much. ++
What do you mean by "overproduced?" They didn't change much of anything in terms of production, other than switching studios between Pieces of Eight and Cornerstone.
Cornerstone was great too. The Ramones? What a stretch! Kind of like grunge before grunge stole the punk rock style. It's sad that to some Styx fans, it wasn't about the amazing musical talents of the band and especially Dennis Deyoung and his brilliant talents and amazing voice & keyboard abilities, but it was more about how some woman were all goo goo for Tommy Shaw. This is largely the same fan base that likes the new Styx line-up over the classic line-up, and never really appreciated the band for the musical genius of their earlier work. I find it amazing anyone could appreciate a song like this.....and like the Ramones too. Polar opposite ends of the musical spectrum.
I was in grade school when this was new. I took the album to my friend's house, and his mom looked at Tommy Shaw and said, "They have a girl in their band?"

I'm not sure which one you're talking about but if it's the one Dennis is playing on top, it's an oberheim 4 voice. I know JY played an Arp Odyssey but I didn't see it in the video. Did I miss it?
