This is Styx at their finest. Great harmonies. Tommy Shaw was the the reason I started paying guitar. Saw them at Baltimore civic center on this tour in I think 81 great show. Great band.
Looking back on this footage now after all these years and just remembering seeing this performed live on this tour in San Francisco at the Cow Palace. They were just so hip and cool and talking to us fans as regular people. They were a pop band but they were also a bunch of regular guys who we could all relate to. Damn I miss those times where you could actually go to a concert and actually feel like the band performing was there for the fans and not just for the money.
This was Capital Center in Largo, MD in October, 1979 and pieces were leaked but the rest of the show is not available for circulation (footage of Eddie and Lady was on UA-cam until copyright yanked it).
One of my favorites off the best album, Cornerstone. This album introduced me to Styx back in 1980 and I've been a fan every since. My brother bought the album and I borrowed it so much he finally just gave it to me.
This isn't a live performance. It's the studio track sync'd up to concert footage, with crowd noise artificially added. You can literally hear it rise and fall unnaturally. I love this since video footage from Styx's halcyon days isn't exactly plentiful, but the actual live audio from this performance would've been much better. But it's something, and that's better than nothing.
It's not hard to tell it was lipsynching because Dennis's voice sounds over dubbed . My school mates saw them perform this song during the "Paradise Theater" tour , I didn't go but I was told Tommy was the high voice in most of the choruses on each song because I couldn't tell who was who up till Paradise Theater on the background harmonies. I did go with the same schoolmates to see the Kilroy tour ,(1983) in Columbia South Carolina at the Carolina Colleseum We graduated in 1982 . I had no idea in 1983 they'd each go solo in 1984 .
@@waltersimmons946 They're not lip-syncing here - I'm sure it's a live performance. The audio we hear, however, is the album track with canned crowd noise added. It's a shame we can't hear the live track.
@Michael P Still fake . But don't worry 😉. I saw Styx during the KILROY TOUR in 1983 at the CAROLINA COLLESEUM in Columbia, South Carolina. So I know they are the real deal.
Yeah, yeah! Don't look now, but here come the '80s! I saw them on this concert tour at the Spectrum in Philadelphia and when they all got along and put out awesome music. But this also marked the beginning of the end with the #1 song from the Cornerstone album, 'Babe'. To this day JY & Tommy Shaw continue to hate the song that I'm sure made them a boatload of money.
Even STYX had a humble beginning......looking back,,one car (Lincoln),long way to the top if you want to rock n roll...!.....this vid proves it.......LONG WAY...😶.....
Thanks for posting. I never have seen this before and cornerstone was my very first Styx album. Loved every song in it. Why critics panned it I could only guess.
@@Deborahtunes While "Cornerstone" was released in 1979, "Borrowed Time" wasn't released as a single until early 1980 in which it was one of the last singles as well. It first Cash Box charted on March 29, 1980. So that makes it 1980 song of the year.
@@jasondudash5501 ~ Fair enough. I was thinking of "Cornerstone" as a whole. Not just the single. I bought this on a 45 for my mother at the time of its release...
Shane Johnson ~ This is a music video, not a straight out rock concert. At the time, it was done this way a lot to keep costs down. But also, it's just how video's were shown then. Before MTV, the creative concept of mini music stories in the way of videos hadn't caught on yet. As someone who has seen them in concert several times, I can assure you they are NOT lip syncing at those...
God, DeYoung was such a limelight-hogging ham. Spotlight's on him and he's the only guy not playing at the start. If he'd only toned down his act and showed a little more respect for his band mates maybe he'd still be in the band. But no....
Agreed, he was always stepping on the other band members toes... Never giving any respect for them, and their contributions to the band. If you watch some of the older concert footage, you see the crummy looks on DeYoung's face, whenever Tommy or JY are singing. He was never appreciative of anything he had. Just assuming it would always be there, if he felt like bothering with the band again...
True but the formula worked and they were huge with it. As long as the platinum records were rolling in i personally would care how ham he wanted to be. If they stayed together like this who knows what other awesome tunes they would have made. And though Roboto was a dive then..Its now more popular than ever..
And yet, DDY sings best of Times from his home on UA-cam and within a few days gets over a million hits. DDY is also the only one with several solo albums with hits, and can still fill music halls to capacity at the age of 73 and can STILL belt out the tunes and sound the same as he did 50 years ago. Tommy and JY would be nothing if it wasn't for DDY, John and Chuck.
The early days of STYX oh what a time it was... Johnny will be in our hearts 4-ever 💯💖🎉
DDY TS JY CP JP the only Styx I can stand for. Absolutely one of the best American AOR bands of all time. Or in general.
This Styx lineup, is, was, and always will be, the best!!!!
Agreed. Not even close
“Cornerstone” was an awesome album!!! Such an underrated talented band. When I was in high school this album was huge!!
💯
From Equinox up through and including Caught in the act....the golden years of one of the greatest bands of all time

This is my favorite Styx song. So much fun.
Too bad they don't release this entire concert footage on DVD and a CD of it :(

Im so lucky, i got to see them play live with this lineup. Just incredeble.
we grew up in the absolute center of rock performance. i saw Styx 4 times with this line up. Spectacular every time!!
This was the moment I fell in love even more with Dennis DeYoung. Saw this live back in the day! Awesome!!!
Styx fond de la bonne musique Rock comme Jésus Chris Superstars ils croient en Dieu tout puissant je suis Donald de Québec bon courage
Cornerstone bon microsillon

Wow...Dennis DeYoung was a real performer and spot on vocals...all of them!
Tommy on that solo! 🎉 👍
The song is the track from the album with crowd noise added.
I saw them on the tour I loved it April Wine was the warm-up band they were amazing too. 👍🤟
Tommy Shaw such an underrated guitarist. Love that solo.
Ah, 1979 was so awesome. The last year you could still find real music.
love this band!!!! STYX FOREVER!!!
The Real STYX
The ONLY STYX
Saw the tour at the fabulous forum in Los Angeles. The album was great, and the band always delivered.
Ahhh when Styx was Styx, not the Shaw Young Group
Maybe...but jy only one there since day one

We have to take what we can get
This was a little early for me but my soul is with it! & Tommy. Wooo
Okay - Feeling very homesick for the 80's after hearing this song!
One of Styx’ best.
Don't look now, the 80s are long gone. 😁🤣
This is the Dennis I fell madly in crush with way back when. Still have that crush, too. 💜
Dennis D great voice , i see so much of Fred Mecury in this vid. Tommy Shaws solo -- welllll incredible.
this song is what they should play more on their setlist now and then
I love STYX !!!!
Yeah, yeah!
Don't look now, but here come the '80s!
I was so cool back in '65
I had it made 'cause I understood what to do to survive
I had my car and I made the scene
Didn't give a darn 'bout no gasoline, oh no
They can go to heck
My friend, we never thought about the world
And its realities
The promised land was ours
We were the Great Society
I'm so confused by the things I read
I need the truth, but the truth is that I don't know who to believe
The right say yes, and the left say no
I'm in between and the more I learn, well, the less that I know
I got to make a show
Livin' high, livin' fine
Livin' high on borrowed time
Yes! No! Yes! No!
No! Yes! No! Yes!
Faith be with me now
I'm just a dreamer in a dream land
Faith be with me now
I'm just a dreamer in a dream land
'Cause I'm...
Livin' high, livin' fine (you know I'm livin' fine)
Livin' high (yes, I'm livin' high) on borrowed time (on borrowed time)

Why are they not playing live? This is lip sinking and instrument sinking to studio recording. Notice at the end of the song, it slowly fades away.
