  • I did some research on a local estuary mark in the hope of a little flounder fishing session. It wasn't the easiest mark to get to and not ideal tidal conditions but it was a beautiful morning which was I was itching to try it out. I have tried to explain my chosen rig and method for flounder fishing and hope you can give it a try next time you're out.

    You have rapidly become my favourite fishing channel. Great tips, good catches and fantastic marks.
    The only problem I have is that I end up staring at the rod tips in the background rather than looking at what you are showing the camera...

      Haha me too!
      I've just gotten back into sea fishing after a 25 yr break.
      The other day ,whilst sorting through my tackle in the garage I knocked my tackle box.
      The bells in it rattled and I spun round like a cobra grabbing for a rod that wasn't there.
      My Mrs nearly wet herself she was laughing so much.

      Martin Chant - I/we return most of the fish we catch. Unless it’s to be used for bait or it’s deep hooked and won’t go back. We keep very little probably only 5% of what we catch. I enjoy catching them so much, why not return it and have the chance of catching it again. 😛🎣

    I saw one of your videos where you talked about your pet hate - removing bait elastic, well one of my major pet-hates is deep hooked flatfish! With experience though, I found hook type really helps, I used to use aberdeen hooks as they were always recommended to me when I was young, but the flatties swallow them down real deep when a worm is threaded, so from experience I try to stick to circle hooks or similar now, not ideal for threading on worm baits but much less likely to deep set them and way easier to unhook.
    Love the channel by the way. I only just found you and I've binge watched a whole bunch now! Makes me want to get back down the water as I've not gotten a hook wet for about 5years now due to various reasons. You've given me the itch and I find myself checking my tackle box to see what I've got in there...

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  5 років тому +2

      @TheFishLocker  5 років тому +2

      Una Person - I have done a pike/predator trace video and I talk a bit in it about the hooks - and in the comments on the video. When I thought about it I put it down to the amount of teeth in a pikes mouth. A circle hook needs to pull out of its mouth effectively to catch in the corner as it turns. Giving great scissor hookups but I figured it must have been catching in the teeth pads inside it’s mouth and fouling. Whereas a barbless chinu just hooks up. That’s my logic anyway. 👍🏻

    Recently subscribed. Really great channel and thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. One basic question. When you tie a blood knot dropper loop for a flapper rig does it matter which side of the loop you cut to make the hook snood? Many thanks. Gareth

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  5 років тому

      Gareth Grimshaw - Thats not problem at all. I hope you are enjoying the vids and finding them useful.
      If I can get away with it, I don’t cut the loop. There are a couple of ways you can avoid cutting it. Either loop the hook on ( like I show with the wrecking rig ) or using a twisted blood loop ( like shown in the squid fishing vid ) and then tie a lighter line tippet from the loop to your hook. If you absolutely have to cut it. Make sure it’s very snug and then cut the bottom one.

    Hey John, may sound a silly question since bait bait bait is the norm, but have you ever tried catching flounder with artificial baits or lures before? i understand its quite popular in the states and most colder northern climates. Also with flatties what state of tides do you think is best for them to be on the feed? do you find more results with bait rolling around plain bombin or is it best to grip lead the bait to the bottom? Do you recce structure for these estuary marks. I love fishing the Tyne estuary but i never have look, last time i was molested by the crabs like :) any advice is greatly appreciated mate thanks. keep up the good work watching some of your older stuff and its quality John

    Ever use a small hypodermic needle to blow air into a worm to make them float?

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  5 років тому

      TheTreegodfather - I do when freshwater fishing. I think that although good in theory, but a lot of fiddle for a crab to put a single snip in them and let the air out. 🤷🏻‍♂️🎣🦀

      Kay peters - That’s one of the beauties of the Cornish coast. It doesn’t look like this today but on a good day it’s as close to heaven as you can get. It’s one of the reasons I live down here. 😉

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  5 років тому +2

      robert mansfield - You can’t beat local diggers. I have a mate who I get mine from when I can’t get out and get them myself. I could probably order it in cheaper from one of the big companies, but I do whatever I can to keep my money local. Local tackle shop and local diggers 👍🏻🎣

      It looks like you’re Falmouth/Truro based,? So many local tackle shops have closed in the last 2 years, which ones are still open to buy bait from?
      Cheers.

    Nice Flounder and location. Hope you are getting paid or getting some discounts or free stuff for mentioning Cox and Rawle hooks in your videos but hope this channel does not become owned by a brand or brands with pressure and hidden motives to push them!

      NTCB - Thankyou very much. So long as I’m the one paying my mortgage I’ll be deciding what happens on our channel. 😉 I recommend the things that I think are good. All of my reviews are in my opinion fair and as I find them. Always stating negatives and positives. You will see from my “Tackle Purchases” album on the Fishlocker fb page. I use and promote lots of different tackle from lots of different places. 👍🏻🎣 I have been offered rods from manufacturers to use on the beach/boat before, but I already have rods I like, trust and that have value to me - coincidentally some are discontinued models.

    What do you do when both lines are taken at the same time , Reel one in and let the other fish tire out ?

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  5 років тому +1

      colintraveller - It depends how I’m fishing and what I’m fishing for. Some fish can just be left. Others you need to set the hook then back the drag off and let them take line whilst you reel the other in. 👍🏻🎣🐟

    Do you eat any of them?

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  5 років тому +1

      TheSebtrain - 95% of the fish I catch I return after a quick look/photo. I will only ever keep fish if it is deep hooked and will die or is something special that I or a family member loves to eat. Like a Haddock or something. I love the sport and action of getting out in the open air and catching them more than eating them. ( unless they’re super tasty 😉 )

      The Fish Locker ha ha quality mate. I was just wondering because I was watching some fishing in NZ and they love to eat the flounder!!!

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  5 років тому

      TheSebtrain - I know a few people who love to eat dabs and flounders. Not for me personally, when I eat fish I prefer it to be one with plenty of meat on. 😉
