Peter Gabriel - Biko (Song Around The World / Playing For Change)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 24 лют 2021
- “You can blow out a candle, but you can't blow out a fire. Once the flames begin to catch, the wind will blow it higher.”
The video was originally created for The Peace Through Music: A Global Event for Social Justice which took place in December 2020, and was hosted on the Playing for Change social media channels. The event was part of the activities to commemorate the United Nations 75th anniversary, and championed the full protection and promotion of human rights for all.
This stand alone video launched in honor of Black History Month in February 2021. The song was inspired by the death of anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko while in police custody, and the song’s relevance still holds true with the unfortunate police brutality that continues to take place in the USA, Nigeria and many places around the world. More than 25 musicians from seven countries join Gabriel for this global rendition to share a message of unity, peace, and hope, including Beninese vocalist and activist Angélique Kidjo, Silkroad’s Yo-Yo Ma, and bass legend Meshell Ndegeocello.
Produced by Sebastian Robertson and Mark Johnson

At 71 Peter Gabriel sounds as good as he ever did.
I am playing this song while crying because Navalny was murdered in prison. I experienced the death of hope when Soviet tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia in 1968. I then got on my Vespa scooter, drove myself to the Russian embassy in Oslo where 30? people had gathered. The rock I threw over the fence made it 1/3 of the way to the building. We must all do what we can to make the world a better place.
Please Peter Gabriel keep tending to making our world better by your powerful music helping to promote freedom in this world we live in. .
PS Woodstock, NY loves you!
Over the years, I’ve simply come to terms with the reality that if Peter Gabriel is involved in something, it’s going to be absolutely awesome. Awesomeness is literally all the guy does.
I've been considering him as a spirit who is on earth to share some Light... Sorry, I'm french, I don't know how to write my feeling about that in a correct way with my limited english... ^__^, In France, I suppose some spiritual people could use "guerrier de Lumière", warrior of Light... That's how I consider him... His songs, his melting of cultures in them, his simple messages of love and share... I deeply respect this artist, this man,, this soul... ^__^

Impossible with corporate and political greed. But yes absolutely agree and we need to lead by example. Some will follow. Others will get swallowed.

'The Sheer Magnanimous Beauty of Humanity and Culture', More beautiful than most other things on this Earth.....The Beauty of Community and People.....Is Braught to 'Life' in Peter Gabriel and their Music like it is God's breathe to air or Water...bringing back life to a Barren place.Humanity's sometimes dis compassion is the barren place: but these people are the 'Life'. It made me cry. There’s no way for me to express how much Peter means to me, as an artist and as a human being.
In a time of isolation, fear and uncertainty, Peter reminds us of the power of music to unite the world.
This man is legend. Surrounded by greatness
There's one universal language: MUSIC. It can be a very powerful thing!
So true. One common language
And it's so beautiful language which ignites hearts!
It's the only universal language because it comes from the heart and the soul of its creator; something all people possess and can understand.

I'm a fan of Song Around the World, I'm a fan of Peter Gabriel and BIKO is one of my favorite songs. But this performance tops everything I've heard so far. It makes me cry and goosebumps all over my body. Damn...so amazing...awesome.
ThankYou So Much Peter Gabriel.

This song gets better with age. Better yet when Peter involves so many people. This celebration of Stephen Biko is wondrous and should be continued throughout the years.

WUNDERBARE MUSIK. .GENIAL !!!
Steve Biko's saying, about causes, rings so true today in the American political spectrum. Too many Rep's have given up their soul for a dying idea, The Rump.
Goosebumps and teardrops!
Thank you Peter for all these years trying to make the world a better place!
Thank you and all the musicians for this tune of Biko🙏
Agreed! ❤ One Love ❤ One People ❤
Me too!! Our world gets starker everyday, we need people who shine their lights!!😢
🌈🌈🌈🤗
This song has been so powerful in so many ways for so many years. This performance brings another level, a global level of importance to the song and the story of Stephen Biko and helps us to remember that injustice and to recognize others when they arise.

Einfach geil. War damals in Berlin als Peter Gabriel in der Eishalle Jaffeestraße sang. Ich höre es heute noch.
I would not have thought it possible to make this piece even more impactful than it was originally, but this new release with so many different, yet completely complimentary, musicians had me quite emotional. Thank you all for lending your immeasurable talents to this project and thank you Mr. Gabriel for continuing to be an artistic conscience for the world.
I named my yellow lab "Biko" she was a sweetheart and showed unconditional love just like Stephen Biko.
The inclusion of strings and other instruments all over the world is phenomenal and their blending is organic. Truly shows that the song's message is universal.
Still a classic after so many years. The great artists who were also great social commentators left a lasting mark.
Sad that this song is still needed today
It always will. Humans are capable of such great and awful things all at once
It is a sad testament for the Human Race.
Thank you Peter!
Amen!

If this doesn’t get your tears flowing then something’s wrong. So powerful.
Yeah I definately have had an obsession with Pete since 80s saw him 17 times ❤️
Just very good teste!
3 here. I envy you.
Just one here, don't know why, because it was one of the best Live-Experiences I've had. Looking forward to the next one!
I've been a fan ever since discovering Genesis in the early 70's. I've had the good fortune of seeing him countless times over the years and I can honestly state that I have never seen him put on a bad show. They have all been incredibly creative full-on aural & visual experiences from start to finish. Whenever he has performed this song live, the entire audience always ends up standing, singing and chanting in unison, with many members in tears. It is such a unifying experience which really demonstrates the power of this beautiful, moving song , and music in general.
I am old, bold, weary and cynical, but Peter still touches me with his music!
Such a great version of a Peter Gabriel's classic. He still got his amazing voice.
"You can blow out a candle, but you can not blow out a fire....". Thank you all. May Love be with you. Always.
I did not think you could make this song more powerful and more relevant. Wow, was I wrong. This is why Peter is still my favourite artist.
Yeah man... Isn't it ?!
SO , TIMELESS / SO GREAT / ☮️✌️🎸‼️
Sheer brilliance from brother to brother Mr. Biko would approve to the magisty of his cause and your recognition
Never forget Stephen Biko! And never forget Peter Gabriel! Amazing performance of this song! Thanx to every last musician involved!
Hi there, I was just going through a post on a page then your profile caught my attention and you seem worth talking to so I could not pass by without saying hi and ask how you doing. Do you mind us talking and getting to know each other better, I will love to be in your circle of friends
One of the very few songs that can honestly claim to have changed the world. Still powerful all these years later.
Awesome, awesome, what a legend,
RIP Steve Biko, passed by the hands of the police, September 1977 in a South African police cell. The year I was born ❤️ Peter Gabriel put it beautifully 💕 He was a beacon of hope for Black South African people ❤️❤️
I've liked this song for almost 50 years now, but this....this is beauty
I cannot put into words how much I love this.
The genius of the crafty Peter Gabriel, oh how the years have melted down. I seen PG in 87 Tower Theatre Upper Darby PA. The show opened with Robert Palmer. Stay positive, live in desired peace.
True beauty lies within the soul. When music comes from the soul and touches the heart true wonder happens. Thank you Peter for everything
Well, I'm actually crying. Please, tell me I'm not the only one.
You're not the only one...
I cry every single time I watch this video
Peter's voice is something else.
You are not the only one.
No, you aren't the only one, tu n'es pas le seul à pleurer...
that unmistakable Gabriel voice, still as powerful as always. And what a great human being :)
Peter!You changed my live!
I had not seen this until now…so intensely moving, and I thought the Amnesty International performance was…with PFC’s work, I am at a loss for words. Thank you so much to everyone involved who made this happen.
Bantu Stephen Biko (18 December 1946 - 12 September 1977) was a South African anti-apartheid activist. Ideologically an African nationalist and African socialist, he was at the forefront of a grassroots anti-apartheid campaign known as the Black Consciousness Movement during the late 1960s and 1970s.
PETER GABRIEL MY ESTEEM FOR THIS GREAT MESSAGE AND POWERFUL SONG TOO 🔝 THANKS A LOT ✌🙏 ❤
Across his songs, his rhythms, Peter Gabriel gives a great importance to all the people all over the world for their Human Rights. That's why we're looking forward to his new album.
I’m astounded it was him that captured my heart, body, mind he was the beginning for me to get into more than just loud guitar, my friend Mick Taylor from High Cross Hertfordshire who later worked for forestry commission and was involved with the project music in the forest (something like that) well he used to have a fantastic plastic collection by the early seventies amongst this was Genesis which I become hooked on especially Peter! Well then mick went an married Sally from Stevenage before they left for Cornwall (honeymoon) we went to see Genesis Rainbow Finsbury Park oct 1973 That’s what saved my life I was going through a whole lot of bad stuff mainly drugs and drinking . Never got to see Mick after accidentally bumped into him 1976 sadly he die about five, six years ago but I will all ways have my memories especially listening to Genesis or Genesis revisited, Nad Sylvan might not be Peter but the boy doesn’t do a bad job, don’t stand there with your fixed execution casting doubt on all I have to say, why’d don’t you
More music ...more happiness
Haven’t heard this song in a few years. What a rendition! If this doesn’t move you and make you realize we are all connected you may be dead. Thanks Peter!!
Amen!
He grows on ya. Always great stuff, just listen..
I’m not generally one to cry, but I did for this…
Story behind music is were you will find his really Glory, a fantastic remix serves him well, Amen
This was very emotional for me, for many reasons. Many thanks to Peter Gabriel plus all the singers and musicians who participated in this magnificent global effort. 💙

I love this piece. I played this to one of my students to demonstrate how things have changed so much in terms of global cooperation in music for such an important piece. This is a piece that needs to go in music history books.
God bless, Peter!

And the eyes of the world are watching now ...

What a fantastic (but still sad) version
One of the greatest songs ever written. More powerful now (if that's possible) than when it was originally recorded. Tears. What else can you say. Thank Narnia artists like Peter Gabriel are here marching alongside us for truth & hope.
The world needs more Peter Gabriel's.
The way this version pays homage to our cultural diversity while uniting us through mutual understanding of suffering is profound.
Pure wonder! Eternal, unforgettable song, always present!

Beautiful blending. Like a magnificent hologram of being One.
Wow, the moment when Gabriel comes in on verse two up the octave!!! Because when you get older, you get to put your song down an octave. People understand. And then out of nowhere - BLAMM!!!! As if no time has passed. Chills.
Wow! Everything he does is simply perfect!
Still sends chills up my spine every time I hear this. Have to sing along
God bless all these wonderful people, musicians and their families and their children... If I had one wish free, I would wish that all people could live in peace.
And above all, to have faith in God, because it is He who has given us Life.
