That river has been used for hundreds of years as a dumping ground for everything and everything, including human bodies. That kind of thing is hard to reverse quickly
The Seine is in NO WAY the "main source of water" in Paris,,over 60 springs around Paris have been used for over a century and still provide tap water to the city .Recycled water from the river ,being used to wash streets only And what do you mean by "main feature of your country"?? Before writing such a piece of rubbish, try to get some info, instead of displaying such ignorance.
When there is a big rainstorm in New York City the same thing happens. Rainwater runoff and street garbage mixes with sewage and flows into the ocean. Doesn’t just happen in Europe.

I'm French and Parisian. I can clearly say the water is extremely disgusting and they have high hopes just to impress the world but time is short. They must find another plan those silly organizers
Glad they're getting attention. They've taken the real natural river out of that body of water. Its concrete and run off. Rivers need to flow naturally with trees and wild life for it to be able to manage itself and stay clean. Rivers need to be cleaner. People can manage waste better. I wouldn't swim in that either.
No matter what you do. A river going through the middle of a city will never be clean! Rats and vermins walking by the hedge of the river, water from streets, when raining will inevitably leak down to the river, no matter what you build to collect water, there's always spillage over.
It is sad how all of these "experts" and the Paris Olympics officials are just trying to move things along for sake of TV ratings, publicity, and putting on a good show. The athletes who will need to swim in human crap will be the ones to suffer unfortunately. As with many public works project unless Asians are building it ( China, Japan) then it probably will not be on time or ahead of schedule. Honestly the Olympic teams should start protesting within the Olympic political framework regarding unsafe venues to force the city of Paris to change the swimming location or change the Tri-Athlon location entirely to a location without water quality issues. All the articles are treating this like business as usual and the event will go on regardless of water quality. And to the Washington Post reporter ( Less Carpenter) speaking as if he is some type of expert on water quality insinuating that things should just move along let's have him swim in it and have a nice tall glass of water from the seine to drink if he is so confidant the water is ok to swim in, its a sad , unsafe, and unhygienic situation all around.
I went to Paris last month and even took a trip on Seine and water didnt look much better than in other european capitols. But stream was pretty strong there.

Triathalons are always like that, man. So are the very long distance swimming events. Every time, man. Every time. Nothing new. Not sure how many times it's been in a river, but it's always open water.

my local river was definitely bad in the summer. seems the playboaters have baced off summer paddles substantially. to be on the safe side i used to moutghwash with southern comfort 100 proof then take a swig to clean my throat. at least it kept those spots clean without issues

Why does it take the olympics to keep your main source of water and main feature of your country/city clean?
Did you see what they did to Rio De Janero?
Because the politicians are not embarrassed and complacent, it’s the same for many countries

the fact that there are no fish in that river tells you everything you need to know.
my father worked for the water district in maine for years, fish help clean the river as well

Until the mayor is willing to drink a cup full of water directly from the river then NO athlete should be forced to swim in it.
Centuries of using the river as a human toilet not even from sewage pipes people just did it straight in
